Women of Latin America, how is it like growing up in your country?

As a woman myself, I've always been interested in the experience of women from other countries. I'm from the Philippines, and growing up here, for the most part, has been an unpleasant experience.

As a kid, I was often told that girls are supposed to be submissive and docile and to be in charge of cleaning all the household tasks while my brothers went off and did their thing. And for many, catcalling is a regular occurrence, and you never truly feel safe walking by yourself, even in broad daylight. (Of course, it depends on which area of the country you're in.) Don't get me started on the toxic macho and victim-blaming culture over here.

So, tell me, how is it like to be a woman in Latin America?

Edit: Thank you so much for everyone who shared their stories! It has been incredibly enlightening and I’ll definitely read every single one of them.

Edit 2: These stories are really heavy and depressing to read. It’s enraging and blood-curdling and it’s so horrifying to think about what the world has come to. I just have no words. Thank you for being brave and sharing your experiences here. My heart goes out to all of you - and all the other women whose stories remain untold.

Latinamericans living outside of Latin America, have you ever had a moment of "immigrant solidarity"

It's when you randomly meet another immigrant (from latin america or not) and you get talking or help each other out.

It happens a lot to me in Portugal since there are lots of Brazilian and also African immigrants.

One time my mom was in the supermarket and a lady asked her with a heavy accent where something was. My mom answered and asked her where she was from. The lady was Venezuelan and they spent 15 minutes talking.

Another time I was in the subway discussing with this classmate who said slavery was not "that bad". This random 2 meters tall angolan guy tapped him on the shoulder and told him he was full of shit and helped me in thr argument. Me and this angolan man left the train at the same stop, he wished me the best of luck. It was the best thing ever.

What Hollywood show has done a decent job depicting Latin America?

From all the hollywood shows I've seen, they all depict Latin America as the foreground of crime...

But what Hollywood shows, if any have done a good job promoting countries?

I really enjoyed The Spy with Sacha Baron Cohen that had a tidbit of an Isreali spy making connections in Buenos Aires.

Jack Ryan Season 2, while it didn't depict Venezuela in a positive tone, it was nice to see a show with a new story line.

I wouldn't include Narcos as I have heard it did a poor job depicting the positive side of Colombia and now Mexico.

(Controversial) Has progressivism lost its initial vision in Latin America?

BACKGROUND: Today in Panama, the person who could be considered our best senator (Juan Diego VΓ‘squez) was "cancelled" on Twitter. The reason? Feminists are mad because he stated he won't propose a bill to legalize abortion. Look, I don't agree with Juan Diego in everything (he seems to not know a lot about economics) and I am vehemently pro-choice, but why cancel him? Why can't they just respect his opinion or at least try to debate with him? He hasn't even said he's pro-life, just that he won't propose said bill.

This brought another question.

I had just graduated high school in 2006 and I remember progressivism was starting to take off in Latin America. Same-sex marriage, feminism and anti-racism were all the rage. Activists were educated and knew how to properly push for equality and dignity. Activists were also eloquent and knew how to debate. The goals were clear: feminism wanted to make sure women were empowered and owner of their own destinies, anti-racism wanted to change economic and political structures to make sure minorities had power and influence and LGBT rights was all about "we are human beings and deserve the same rights". I was amazed by it really.

Today I would be ashamed of being a progressive. Feminism is all about "menstruating men", putting biological men in women's sports, inclusive language and saying all men are rapists. LGBT rights has become a shadow of what it once was. The fight against racism is no longer about making sure minorities are properly educated and have more economic opportunities, but about punishing someone for saying felicidades negrito.

Have you had the opportunity to talk and get to know foreigners from outside North America and Europe? How would you say is their level of knowledge of your country or Latin America as a whole?

The reason for this question is that in my work I interact a lot with people from India and some of them do not know certain basic things about our region (like what language we speak and why). And these are professional people with college degrees that you would expect would be better informed; granted these is anecdotal, which is why I want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar from people who we don’t see often visiting our region.
