Anyone else started focusing on lather while washing dishes? 🧼

Since I’ve been wet shaving and specifically bowl lathering, I’ve begun to really notice my lathering in other aspects of life as well: most notably, when washing dishes.

It mostly happens with bowls, but really any concave surface will do. Spoons, baby bottles, you name it. Instead of mindlessly scrubbing as usual, my mind starts thinking about the lather I’m producing, soap to water ratio, and how much I’m agitating the mixture. It’s really weird but it’s also made me enjoy this tedious household chore more.

Anyone else doing this too or am I losing it from spending too long in quarantine?

Can't get a good lather with Palmolive.

I read that a lot of people love it, but it's just horrible to me. It does not want to lather up well, and the razor feels "sticky" on my skin, to the point like I'd rather have no lather at all to shave and it would be smoother. I tried the Palmolive shaving cream in the tube, and the shave stick, and both are roughly the same. I tried face-lathering and bowl-lathering.

Meanwhile, I absolutely love the Nivea shave cream in the tube. Lathers up nicely (even without a bowl...) and is very smooth under the razor. I got this cream last, but it is by far the best, and the Palmolive stuff really almost made me go back to cartridge razors, but now I used the nivea cream for quite a few months and I like straight razors. Don't get any nicks... I wouldn't say the shave is any better or worse than cartridge razors when you get used to it. Safety razor is better in case you don't shave for 3-4 days because it still easily cuts through without tugging.

Still need to test out a few different blades too... And maybe get one of those fancy Stirling or noble otter shaving soaps at some point.

Do some soaps just not lather well?

Sorry for the newbie question, but I recently started using shaving soap rather than the canned stuff. I had no idea what I was doing, and hadn't found this sub yet... so I ordered a brush / soap / bowl from Amazon... the company was Anbbas or something like that. I was puck lathering, and usually managed to get a decent amount of foam. I then bought a granite bowl, and switched to bowl lathering. I don't get quite as much foam that way, but I think that is probably technique and water ratio.

I also picked up some shaving soap from a local soap maker at a craft booth for something like $4, and that stuff... I can't get it to lather to save my life. I will put it on my face / neck, and by the time I am done shaving my face, you can't even tell there is any on my neck. I think the label said is was lanolin soap, iirc. I tried different ratios of soap to water, adding more of each, backing off one or the other... and it just wouldn't cooperate.

Shortly before Halloween, I ordered some soap from Southern Witchcraft called Samhain... that stuff is awesome. Whips up quickly into a beautiful lather. Only problem there, is it is a bit more expensive than some of the other stuff I have seen.

So my question is... do some soaps just suck at lathering, or is it more likely poor technique?

PS. Sorry for typing a novel here.

I've been wet shaving for about a year now and I'm curious, how do you all prefer to build your lather? I'll go first and say I've mostly been lathering in the tub right on top of the puck. Whats your preferred method?

And a bonus question for the bowls, do you load then move to the bowl or scoop some soap directly into the bowl and do it all there?

Lather, Scream, Repeat

I should have taken better care of this hair. There were always a few small handfuls of knotted hair that would come out in the shower as I attempted to detangle the morning mess, but never an amount that seemed alarming. Well, I guess I should have been alarmed sooner, because before you knew it, I was staring down a little bald spot in the mirror.

I muttered to myself as I leaned forward into my reflection, eyes strained upwards, scanning the patchy, pale mark atop my crown.

I mean, maybe it’s not too late? There’s still… some, hair. Maybe it just needs stimulation. I squint my eyes, trying to block the patch from view. Yeah, this shouldn’t be a big deal. This looks like early stage stuff. I’m young, this can be handled.

4 or 5 emptied shampoo bottles lay scattered in the corners of my bathroom floor. Each one emptied of their promises as I stare down the patch, hairs growing ever fewer, ever thinner.

I unwrap the plastic off another bottle. A black thin tube, emblazoned with the words β€œHair Guarantee” in a red rounded font. Yeah, I’m sure. I bet the secret ingredient will be the one weird trick that doctors hate.

I feel the hot water running down my back as I routinely lather my scalp with fistfuls of the stuff, a wet black mass of bubbles forming atop my head. I finally lean my head back, letting it rinse away en masse.

As streams of black syrupy goo trickle down the sides of my face, I suddenly feel two stray streams run down my eyelids, seeping within. A stinging pain immediately strikes me, and I instinctively squeeze my eyes shut, running water directly over them.

β€œGah! Damn it!”

The stinging sensation persists. I force my eyes open and start frantically rinsing the black liquid away from my face. What the hell’s in this stuff to make it burn like that, damn!

I step out onto the tile, hair still half sudsy, and angrily dry off my face and hair. Stinging starts to slowly subside as my eyes start to water. I pass by my bloodshot reflection as I flop my way into the bedroom to dress. Thank god today’s Friday.

I let myself sleep in to ridiculous hours on Saturdays. This one being no different. I intermittently find myself sleepily tossing and turning as streaks of sun start to blare through the thin gap in my closed curtains. As the temperature slowly rises, it becomes harder to stay asleep. My eyes still feel tingly. I reach up to rub them, and feel a tuft of fuzzy material touch the side of my hand. What?

I sit up with a start, try openin

Can't get a lather, except when I put the soap on my face?

Hey all.

For my birthday I got some shave soap from my family (first time using shave soap). It was from a local place and smelled foresty. I whipped it up in a scuttle I got as well, and it lathered fine. The stuff when it lathered though smelled like pure weed so I quit using it. So then I got a shave sample from chiseled face. I tried to lather it in the tiny container it came in but it didn't work. I put some on my face and it seemed to lather fine when I tried that. Should I be scooping some out and putting it into a bowl? I'm just wondering if I did something wrong here or not. I know that the container it is in is small but I expected it to lather at least a bit. Also when I used it on my face it seemed to lather well but it kinda gunked up the razor a bit.

Economical lather products for use with a DE razor?

I used to shave with a cheap shavette (like $10 from amazon) and a Nivea shaving gel, but it’s pretty bad and I get lazy so I’m looking to upgrading.

I can afford to get cartridge razors and such, but it seem unnecessarily expensive and I’m still frugal about things. I so far have used my DE razor with the same shaving gel and not really having issue, but I also wanted to try out a true lather.

I was just about to order a boar brush with a Barrister and Mann shave soap, but I did notice it being still pretty expensive compared to cheap shaving gels. Like a 40oz B&M seems to last around 80-100 shaves which puts it at around $0.20 per shave.

What would be a good economical option for lather with a DE? I would guess that it would be a soap rather than a cream, but is there really some options out there that are actually cheaper than using over the counter creams/gels/foams (while still performing at least as well)?

How can I make my lather "less bubbly"?

Hello, I just started using shaving cream and it seems like my lather is rather bubbly. When I apply the shaving cream to my face it seems like the bubbly texture doesn't offer much protection. I do hand lather by wetting my hand, apply a bit of shaving cream to my brush, and swirl my brush around in my hand. Once the lather builds up I apply it to my face with my hands. Is there a way to prevent this? Should I be lathering on dry hands? Thanks.

Texture is bubbly/foamy.

LPT: Lather on numbing cream before your tattoo appointment

Most people don't realize this until they've gotten enough tattoos to build up a relationship with the artist, or are just involved more heavily in the tattoo world. Numbing cream makes a HUGE difference when getting tattooed but it usually takes 1-2 hours for your skin to really absorve it, so, 2 hours before your appointment sanitize the area with some alcohol and lather on the numbing cream ($20 on amazon). Wrap it with saran wrap and take your butt to the shop.

Question on Applying Lather to Face

So I'm very new to wetshaving and still don't have much technique or knowledge. I've been noticing that when I apply my lather to my face (after working it up in a bowl) it's very thin, and I can see my skin tone clearly through it. However, the lather in the bowl is reasonably thick. Today I tried applying the lather from the bowl and brush to my face using my hands and got a nice thick coat of lather on my face. This made me think that the brush might be retaining the lather and not applying it to my skin. Indeed when I tried to use the brush to even the lather that I put on with my hands the coat got much thinner.

I'm wondering if this is possibly the fault of the brush (cheap synthetic bought from the body shop) or an issue with my technique. Has anyone encountered any problems like this or have any suggestions?

Straight razor - No Lather

G'day guys, got a curiosity for ya.

A few months ago a read an article in some internet backwater extolling the virtues of shaving without a lather and instead just using cold water.

I've been doing so since then and have found it pleasant though the tugging initially took some getting used to.

Dunno how it would feel on the face specifically as I keep a beard and so only shave my throat and my head and tidy up the cheeks.

It's a bit spartan in that it lacks the ritual of lather prep and application, just strop and steel.

Haven't found god through this method but I thought you might be interested to try it out if only for the novelty.

cheers dudes, keep it sharp and shiny.
