[OC] The Disney Decade : How Disney Used Hockey To Build The City of Anaheim

After the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were sold in the winter of 2005 to Henry and Susan Samueli, the creation of Disney CEO Michael Eisner's Anaheim NHL Experiment was over. But for Eisner, the Mighty Ducks were more than just a marketing tactic based on the film of the same name, it was the product of Eisner's NHL dream, as well as the end of a longshot project designed to save the city of Anaheim from going into ruins.

The early 1990s were a dark, turbulent time for the Walt Disney Company. Attempts at growing the Disney brand were a failure for the company. Nicknamed 'The Disney Decade' at the start of the 90s, plans were underway to grow the Disney image far beyond the United States. Under the leadership of Chairman/CEO Michel Eisner and President/COO Frank Wells, Disney's image was rapidly changing, and the company was looking to expand it's interests internationally.

In 1992, Disney opened it's European park, "Euro Disneyland'' to a hasty reception. Many in France lacked the interest of an amusement park in the heart of France the way the American people had. More so, critics of U.S. consumerism had criticized the company's attempts to push the American Way onto Europe. Many French intellectuals, dedicated to pursuing the idealistic romanticization of the country, called for the park to be moved. More chaos ensued early on into the park's tenure as a group of rural French farmers, angered by subsidies placed by the U.S. government on agriculture which greatly affected rural trade protested at the park. French farmers, driving tractors past the City of Paris into the nearby town of Marne-la-Vallee, blocked the parking area of Euro Disneyland, leading to thousands being blocked from access to the park. The organized protests, which had already been actively deployed recently, was the most vocal and televised moment in the fight to protect French Lands. Disney's Americanized style of operations directly clashed with the French park, with most of the planning done in English, which caused even more dysfunction for the park. Even with the large promotion of Euro Disneyland, poor attendance mixed with high costs for maintenance led to the park becoming a financial burden for Disney. With the company losing Billions in it's first year in Europe. Even more turmoil beyond the boardroom appeared as it was reported that thousands of employees had resigned from the amusement park on it's first year.

After the financial failures of Europe, Eisner and Wells turn

Raymond Carver's Paris Review Interview about literature, his work and vices.

INTERVIEWER: What was your early life like, and what made you want to write?

CARVER: | grew up in a small town in eastern Washington, a place called Yakima. My dad worked at the sawmill there. He was a saw-filer and helped take care of the saws that were used to cut and plane the logs. My mother worked as a retail clerk or a waitress or else stayed at home, but she didn’t keep any job for very long. I remember talk concerning her “nerves.” In the cabinet under the kitchen sink, she kept a bottle of patent — “nerve medicine,” and she’d take a couple of tablespoons of this every morning. My dad’s nerve medicine was whiskey. Mos toften he kept a bottle of it under that same sink, or else outside in the woodshed. I remember sneaking a taste of it once and hating it, and wondering how anybody could drink the stuff. Home was a little two-bedroom house. We moveda lot when I was a kid, but it was always into another little two- bedroom house. The first house I can remember living in, near the fairgrounds in Yakima, had an outdoor toilet. This was in the late 1940s. I was eight or ten years old then. I used to wait at the bus stop for my dad to come home from work. Usually he was as regular as clockwork. But every two weeks or so, he wouldn’t be on the bus. I’d stick around then and wait for the next bus, but I already knew he wasn’t going to be on that one, either. When this happened,it meant he’d gone drinking with friends of his from the sawmill. I still remember the sense of doom and hopelessness that hung over the supper table when my mother and I and my kid brother sat down toeat.

INTERVIEWER: But what made you want to write?

CARVER: The only explanation I can give you is that my dad told me lots of stories about himself when he was a kid, and about his dad and his grandfather. His grandfather had fought in the Civil War. He fought for both sides! He was a turncoat. When the South began losing the war, he crossed over to the North and began fighting for the Union forces. My. dad laughed when he told this story. He didn’t see anything wrong with it, and I guess I didn’t either. Anyway, my dad would tell me stories, anecdotes really, no moral to them, about tramping aroundin the woods,or else riding the rails and having to look out for railroad bulls. I loved his company and loved to listen to him tell me these stories. Once in a while he’d read something to me from what he was reading. Zane Grey westerns. These were the first real hardback books, outs

Asian Journal: Chronology of the Marcos Plunder

^(Posted on) ^(October 27, 2015) ^(by) ^(anywhereiwander)

For those who claim the Marcos family made the Philippines a better place.

(This Chronology is compiled by Charlie Avila and originally published in 2012 at the Asian Journal San Diego.)

^(September 1976)^(, the Marcoses bought their first property in the U.S. – a condo in the exclusive Olympic Towers on Fifth Avenue in New York . Five months later they would also buy the three adjoining apartments, paying a total of $4,000,000.00 for the four and using Antonio Floirendo’s company, The Aventures Limited in Hong Kong, as front for these purchases.)

^(October 13, 1977) ^(Today, after addressing the UN General Assembly, Imelda celebrated by going shopping and spending $384,000 including $50,000 for a platinum bracelet with rubies; $50,000 for a diamond bracelet; and $58,000 for a pin set with diamonds.)

^(The day before, Vilma Bautista, one of her private secretaries, paid $18,500 for a gold pendant with diamonds and emeralds; $9,450 for a gold ring with diamonds and emeralds; and $4,800 for a gold and diamond necklace.)

^(October 27, 1977) ^(The Marcoses donated $1.5 million to Tufts University in Boston, endowing a professorial chair in East Asian and Pacific Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. The students and professors discovered this and forced the school to reject the donation. To save face, the Marcoses were allowed to finance several seminars and lectures.)

^(November 2, 1977) ^(Still at her shopping spree, Imelda paid $450,000 for a gold necklace and bracelet with emeralds, rubies, and diamonds; $300,000 for a gold ring with emeralds and diamonds; and $300,000 for a gold pendant with diamonds, rubies, and thirty-nine emeralds.)

^(July 1978) ^(After a trip to Russia, Imelda arrived in New York and immediately warmed up for a shopping spree. She started with paying $193,320 for antiques, including $12,000 for a Ming Period side table; $24,000 for a pair of Georgian mahogany Gainsborough armchairs; $6,240 for a Sheraton double-sided writing desk; $11,600 for a George II wood side table with marble top – all in the name of the Philippine consulate to dodge New York sales tax.)

This Economist article accurately articulated this subs obsession with property. It’s not just an Aus problem. It’s all developed western nations. (Article in comments)

Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake It is an obsession that undermines growth, fairness and public faith in capitalism Leaders

Jan 16th 2020 edition Jan 16th 2020

Economies can suffer both sudden crashes and chronic diseases. Housing markets in the rich world have caused both types of problem. A trillion dollars of dud mortgages blew up the financial system in 2007-08. But just as pernicious is the creeping dysfunction that housing has created over decades: vibrant cities without space to grow; ageing homeowners sitting in half-empty homes who are keen to protect their view; and a generation of young people who cannot easily afford to rent or buy and think capitalism has let them down. As our special report this week explains, much of the blame lies with warped housing policies that date back to the second world war and which are intertwined with an infatuation with home ownership. They have caused one of the rich world’s most serious and longest-running economic failures. A fresh architecture is urgently needed.

At the root of that failure is a lack of building, especially near the thriving cities in which jobs are plentiful. From Sydney to Sydenham, fiddly regulations protect an elite of existing homeowners and prevent developers from building the skyscrapers and flats that the modern economy demands. The resulting high rents and house prices make it hard for workers to move to where the most productive jobs are, and have slowed growth. Overall housing costs in America absorb 11% of gdp, up from 8% in the 1970s. If just three big cities—New York, San Francisco and San Jose—relaxed planning rules, America’s gdp could be 4% higher. That is an enormous prize.

As well as being merely inefficient, housing markets are deeply unfair. Over a period of decades, falling interest rates have compounded inadequate supply and led to a surge in prices. In America the frenzy is concentrated in thriving cities; in other rich countries average national prices have soared, especially in English-speaking countries where punting on property is a national sport. The financial crisis did not kill off the trend. In Britain inflation-adjusted house prices are roughly equal to their pre-crisis peak, while real wages are no higher. In Australia, despite recent falls, prices remain 20% higher than in 2008. In Canada they are up by half.

The soaring cost of housing has created gaping inequalities and inflamed both generational and geographical divides.

Did Quebec offer - and did Ottawa reject - a trade of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Owen Nolan for Alexandre Daigle? A closer look.

Over the last several years, a rumor has been spread that the first-year Ottawa Senators - they of the 10-70-4 record - turned down a deal for the 1st overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft which would have seen them land Joe Sakic, Owen Nolan, and Peter Forsberg from Quebec.

There are two questions: is it true, and if not, what is the truth?

First things first.

#Forsberg

Peter Forsberg was a prospect in the 1991 draft. He was not a top-level prospect; in fact, here are some blurbs from the time:

>Peter Forsberg -- 5-10 161, MoDo (Sweden) 23 7-10-17, 20. Similar to teammate Naslund, he gets high marks for playmaking and skating. Needs to improve scoring punch.

  • UPI

>The top European prospects are wing Markus Naslund and center Peter Forsberg. They are teammates on a Swedish elite team and could be picked in the first round, as could Czechoslovakian Martin Rucinsky, a highly skilled forward.

  • Rachel Blount, Star-Tribune

>USA Today hockey writer Kevin Allen ranks the top 25 prospects for Saturday's National Hockey League entry draft at the Buffalo Aud (noon, SportsChannel America): > >25. Peter Forsberg, C 5-10 165 Sweden 23 7 10 17

  • USA Today

Scott Morrison of The Toronto Sun had Forsberg going 16th to Pittsburgh in his mock draft.

As it turned out, Forsberg was taken 6th by Philadelphia. How was that received?

>The Flyers surprised a lot of people when they chose center Peter Forsberg with the sixth pick in yesterday's NHL entry draft. One of the most surprised was Forsberg. > >"I heard the Flyers were interested, but I thought it would be a later place" in the draft, said the 17-year-old native of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. "I was really surprised." > >The Flyers entered the draft intent on picking the best available player, and both general manager Russ Farwell and European scout Inge Hammarstrom insisted that Forsberg will make them look good a few years down the road. Farwell said that at one point in the scouting process, they had the 6-foot, 181-pound center ranked just below No. 1 pick Eric Lindros. > >"He's very intense," Farwell said. "We had a lot of guys who saw him play, and they all liked him. We tried to find something about him we didn't like, but we couldn't. When we did our list, (Patrick) Poulin got some consideration. (Alex) Stojanov got some consideration. (Glenn) Murray got some consideration. But it clearly came out that this guy was the best." > >Forsberg was ranked 18t

Part 2 of 3

Part 3 of 3

Night #1

Thursday October 3, 2019

Things got serious the day I installed surveillance cameras. That night, after I kissed my wife, Deanna, goodnight, I retired to my home office to edit a video for YouTube.

Just after 1 a.m., a high pitch shriek fills the house and jolts me out of my chair. I immediately run to Deanna, toward the scream. As I dash down the hall I'm hoping she is just having night terrors.

Later, when I watched the surveillance video, I saw something different. I saw something pulling her leg. Intently, I watch, waiting for it to happen again.

I see the gentle rise and fall of Deanna's breaths as she sleeps soundly. She tosses and turns a bit, but nothing out of the ordinary. She snuggles into our waterbed with her right leg hooked around the comforter exposing her foot. Suddenly, her leg kicks as if it were yanked. She's startled, but tries to fall back to sleep.

Our surveillance cameras have audio, so I could hear her grumble, "Vince, don't pull my leg. I'm trying to sleep."* I must admit, messing with her is something I regularly do, but not that night.*

Moments later, Deanna is forcibly pulled to the end of the bed. Jarred awake, she clings to the sheets trying to fight it off. It lets go, freeing her to scurry back to the headboard. She gasps and balls her limbs around her body like a child.

Surveillance Footage capture of Deanna pulled to the foot of the bed.

She scans the room attempting to make sense of what just occurred. Gaining a presence of mind, she creeps toward the foot of the bed to investigate. Slowly, she approaches the edge, grasping a fistful of the comforter for safety. She peers over but sees nothing. Relieved, Deanna rubs her face as she reassesses the room. She turns to my side of the bed and gulps, it must be there. Cautiously, she peeks over that edge, but again finds nothing and breathes a sigh of relief.

As she lingers over my side, the bedroom door behind her creaks. She turns and sees the door closing. Quickly, she sits up to glare at it. The door moves again. In a panic, with revved-up breaths, she calls for me. A hushed gasp at first, until she builds up the nerve to scream, "Vince!"

I fly out of my chair, blaze past the dogs and

Drinks

Ynum-beber agua o vino/to drink water or wine.

Hoghog (hughog ???)-vaciar lo que esta en la vasija/empty anything out of a vessel.

Note: I’m not exactly sure if this belongs to ‘drinks’ because the examples are of human guts ie bladder and guts...a likely cognate listed after it ‘hoga’ ‘to empty out the guts’, I think it’s more related to going to the bathroom...

Himagas-después de comer dulce para beber agua/to drink water after eating something sweet.

Paya-acabar la bebida sin resollar/to finish drink without wheezing/panting ie to finish the drink. Eg. Hindi rin macapapaya aco niring lahat. “I can’t finish (any drink) wine or water at one go.”

Baric (barik)-beber en sus borracheras juntos muchos/for a group of many to binge together drinking alcohol. Eg. Pinagbabaricang bahay. “House where people get drunk.”

Laclac (laklak)-beber perro y aplicandolo al hombre dicen/to drink like a dog or when you drink too much to fast, it also applies to people (in a negative context).

Lagoc-beber a tragos de golpe/to gulp a drink in one go.

Note: *Traditionally Filipinos DRANK A LOT. Drinking alcohol was part of the ancient culture. This is from many accounts of Spanish during early colonial period. Some accounts say that Pinoys could easily outdrink Europeans; sometimes it condescendingly say that Pinoys were '...lazy drunks' because of the amount they drank. Most people drank, all their festivals (latter became 'fiestas' for saints) had lots of drinking. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, sold products were alcohol. The accounts often trans. plots of land with coconut as 'their vineyards'; many of the local chiefs had them just for harvesting toddy. Rituals often included drinking: some of the wedding rituals, signing peace treaties (eg sandugo, where each party mix a drop of blood to drink), celebrations of victory, congratulatory celebrations. I posted it another comment: the 'salud!' of ancient Tagalogs is 'aba tayo!' 'Let us! (drink this together)', and often the one who hosted the event will say a congratulatory speech. Short to say, since advent of Islam and Christianity, although it did not completely destroy this tradition, drinking now has negative connotation in PH culture ev

[OC] Joe Buck's World Series-ending calls from 2000-2019

Some background: In 1996, Joe Buck was named Fox’s lead play-by-play voice for baseball at age 27. Fox (Buck) and NBC (Bob Costas) alternated covering the World Series between 1995 and 1999; in 2000, Fox became the exclusive broadcaster for the World Series.

I don’t think it’s a controversial take nowadays to say that Joe Buck has become a pretty good broadcaster. It’s also not a controversial take to say that he used to be, shall we say, not very good. So let’s revisit the final plays of the World Series from 2000-2019, a nice round number of twenty, and see if we can pinpoint his best call, his worst call, and the moment when he graduated to legitimately good broadcaster.

Each call will include: a clip and transcript of the call, some notes, and a score from 1-10, because quantifying things is fun.

“But wait,” you ask, “why not include 1996 and 1998, which Buck also called?” Answer: Because 20 is a round number.

2000 World Series: Mike Piazza flies out to Bernie Williams, Yankees win

Transcript: “Piazza gets into one to center - back is Bernie Williams… a three-peat! The New York Yankees, for the third time in a row, fourth time in five years, and twenty-sixth time in franchise history, they’re the world champions.”

Notes: In my memory, Buck undersold the call on Piazza’s deep fly ball, but he actually nailed the split second of “did he just hit a home run” very well. Nothing really to argue with on this one, it’s a good call.

8/10

2001 World Series: Luis Gonzalez singles, Jay Bell scores, Diamondbacks win

Transcript: “Floater-- center field! The Diamondbacks… are world champions!”

Notes: One of the most dramatic endings in World Series history, Buck gives it a good call and then gets out of the way to let the scene on the field tell the story. It’s the Vin Scully rule - sometimes saying nothing is better.

9/10

2002 World Series: Kenny Lofton flies out to Darin Erstad, Angels win

Transcript: “Driven into right center field, Erstad says he has it. The Angels, world champions!”

Notes: This is nowhere near as good as it should be. I know Kenny Lofton isn’t a power hitter, I know it was never likely to be a home run, but this is a well-hit fly ball by the potential tying run in Game 7 of the World Series. The first half of this call has all the gravitas of a seventh-inning flyout in

Ladies and Gentlemen, the offseason is well upon us, but that shouldn't mean that we lose the ability to cheer on our favorite teams as they battle it out for a shot at national glory. I would like to introduce you to the /r/CFB Civilization Battle Royale! A 12 week tournament where all 130 FBS schools fight (literally) for a chance to be champions!

#The rules are simple:

  1. All schools will be controlled by an A.I. There will be no human influence in the results at all
  2. Domination victory only
  3. No city states
  4. Each Conference will have one full game played until there is one conference champion left standing. Conferences will be done in alphabetical order.
  5. After all conferences have played, a final championship game will be played with all conference winners until there is one true National Champion!^*

#####Extra Tidbits

  • The game will be played in Civilization V with all expansions enabled
  • The team's leader will be their current head coach
  • Capital cities will be named after each team's home stadium
  • Cities will be named after different buildings around each school's campus
  • Spies will be named after former players for each school
  • Conference games will take place on custom maps designed for each conference. Each team will start as close to their true location as possible.

#And here are your fighters! Each school will get two unique units/buildings. I have already added school mascots as the first unique unit, but I need your help! Any suggestions to what could be a second unique unit/building for your school would be greatly appreciated. And for those of you who don't have a mascot (Indiana, Central Michigan, Illinois), I need something to fill both of your unique slots!

Robert Tosh Plumlee has stated in interviews that he smuggled over 40 tons of drugs into the US (in a single year), landing on US military bases. He was assured by his contacts in the IC that this was part of a sting operation. No busts ever went down. Concerned for his safety, He approached Senator Gary Hart in an attempt to turn himself in. https://narcosphere.narconews.com/notebook/bill-conroy/2013/10/assassinated-dea-agent-kiki-camarena-fell-cia-operation-gone-awry-say-l.html

Former CIA contract pilot Plumlee told Narco News during the course of a series of recent interviews that after Camarena’s murder in early February 1985, he was ordered by his CIA handlers to fly into a ranch located near Veracruz, Mexico.

That ranch, he claims and DEA documents show, was controlled by the narco-trafficker Caro Quintero. It also was being used by the CIA — which was operating there using Mexico’s intelligence service, the Federal Security Directorate, as a cover. The Federal Security Directorate, or DFS in its Spanish initials, has since been reorganized and rebranded as CISEN, which still works closely with US officials and agencies, including the CIA.

The Veracruz ranch was being used as a drugs-and-weapons transshipment location — part of a larger effort to fund and supply the US-trained Contra guerrillas.📷

That covert effort was at the root of a scandal known as Iran/Contra, which played out during President Ronald Reagan’s second term in the 1980s. One facet of the scandal involved illegally raising money via arms sales to Iran to fun

A Tale of Two Florida Franchises.

For this one, I’ve decided to try a different approach, rather than just writing about one team, or one player, I’m going to write about two teams, specifically the Panthers and Lightning. As we all know the Lightning are considered to be pretty good, while the Panthers are considered to be, pretty bad. From the Rat Trick, to Quenneville signing, the Panthers have seen a lot, but so have the Lightning.

Expansion, Expansion Never Changes.

Lightning

In the late 80’s the NHL was hungry to further expand, and they selected, Tampa Bay, San Jose and Ottawa. San Jose was a no brainer, as North Stars owners Gordon and George Gund had been trying to move the North Stars to San Francisco for years, San Jose was given to them on the condition they sell the team to a local owner(Norm Greed), while the new Senators would be in the heart of Canada’s capital, they were a shitshow from the beginning, while the Lightning…. oh boy that’s a can of worms.

So to begin with, there were two groups here bidding for the St Petersburg, Florida. One group owned by Peter Karmanos and Jim Rutherford, looked to be the more stable, while their opposing group was led by the Esposito Brothers, Phil and Tony Esposito, who in turn had money coming in from The Pritzker Family(Too many things to list, they’re rich), who in turn backed out at the last minute, leading Kokusai Green, who...we don’t know shit about, to come in as the new investors for the Esposito Group. Kokusai Green were a group of masked people, who managed a golf course / resort. It looked like Karmanos / Rutherford would be the winning bid, but the Esposito Group were the ones willing to pay the $50 million expansion fee up front, because even back then, Karmanos was a cheap bastard.

For their first season, they played at the Expo Hall of the Florida State Fairgrounds, so obviously not an arena built for hockey. It was tiny(11K seats), but it was fine for the first season, before they moved to play at the Thunderdome(Tropicana Field now), until the Ice Palace(Amalie Arena) was built. In their first season, they had goaltender Manon Rheaume play a pre-season game, making her the first and only Woman to play in a NHL game. She stopped seven of nine shots against the St Louis Blues. It was a publicity stunt, obviously, but she wasn’t awful. She played an IHL game too.

Exeter City (part 11): Summer Transfer Review 2023-24

Exeter City looked calm, cool, and collected during a busy transfer season, including a pair of moves that rate as our top bargain-hunting plays of the summer

Click here for our Exeter City Coverage, and bookmark us for updates

Deadline Day Drama doesn't Disrupt Daudelin.

It was one of Exeter's busiest windows under manager Daudelin, and the club came out of it with a solid grade. There were solid upgrades in a key position, some surprising departures, and one glaring weakness remaining.

Entering July, the club had promoted a number of youth prospects all worth of time, and a number more already away on loan. With squad numbers booming full of English, Northern Irish, and Canadian candidates (thanks to manager Daudelin's role with the Canadian National team), there was no danger of running afoul of homegrown player requirements. But Exeter needed to balance the books, shed some salaries, and ensure younger players developed. By the end of the window, Exeter would have a total of EIGHT players on loan to earn game time.

But those would not be the only moves, nor the least consequential ones.

The first major move came early, as Exeter landed Wales international centre-back Chris Mepham on a shocking free from Bournemouth. With elite pace for a centre back and a towering leap, he is widely expected by pundits to slot into the starting eleven. The lure of playing European football seems to have been a draw, as Mepham took a reduced wage and larger up-front bonus to join the Grecians. His weekly wage is among the top three at Exeter, at 35k/week, a bargain compared to some Premier League peers who are not travelling on weeknights to Europe. His contract is expected to be renegotiated at some point this season, as Exeter solidify their Prem finances.

Our proprietary rating of Mepham

Mepham's arrival rendered at least one of Exeter's starting centre-backs redundant, and sure enough it was Hanche-Olsen who was first out the door. While Hanche-Olsen was widely heralded as a team leader and game-day captain, his departure represents good business for the club. He arrived in 2020 on a free from Stabaek in Norway and was a day-one starter. After paying exactly zero dollars in transfers, Exeter was able to negotiate a

Astropocalypse, Season 6: Galloping All-In

I started Astropocalypse last year, and it proved incredibly prophetic. First the real-life Astros got whacked hard. And then, all of Major League Baseball got nuked! I'm a little scared of what will happen next …

As a recap: Before the 2018 season, I deleted every player in the Astros' organization to see how long it would take me to rebuild a competitive franchise from absolutely nothing. The answer was apparently five years, as I won the division last year before falling in the ALCS in four games. The experiment has been proven a success, but now I want more!

Season 1 (2018) recap
Season 2 (2019) recap
Season 3 (2020) recap
Season 4 (2021) recap
Season 5 (2022) recap

Off-season:

Drew Pomeranz came over in mid-season and really boosted the rotation. Overall, he had a 3.33 ERA and 3.0 WAR in 2022, so I went ahead and re-upped him for 3 years/$30 million. Not too expensive or long-term, and my minor-league starting pitching is less than great, so even having him as a #4 starter (behind Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, and Jon Gray) seemed worthwhile.

Shohei Ohtani won the AL Cy Young Award, with 19 first-place votes. Quintana was second with 7, and Sale was oddly sixth despite getting 4 first-place votes.

Giancarlo Stanton was AL MVP, hitting 61 HR go to with his 62 from last year. He's led the AL in home runs five of the last six seasons, and I could really use a right-handed power hitter, so, on a lark, I decided to see if the Yankees would be willing to trade him. They were surprisingly willing to deal, and after some back-and-forth, I finally pulled the trigger on a deal that would send my starting 1B, Evan White, along with Michael A. Taylor, who I wanted to get rid of, and a fringe reliever to the Yankees for Stanton.

https://imgur.com/zhiVvdt

Stanton had $32m/$32m/$32m/$19m/$15m left on his contract, but I had over $50 million to spend this year (and saved about $7m on the players I sent away), so I thought it was worthwhile, especially s

Budget Breakdown | 200 people | ~$15K CA

Let me start off by saying I was 100% against a traditional wedding. The thought of me being center of attention and spending $25K for one day made me want to throw up. Long story short, I gave in since he wanted a big wedding with all of our friends and family. I said I’d only do it if it was under/around $15K. We strongly considered a backyard wedding and after pricing everything out, it was coming out way over the $15K! So many sleepless nights and anxiety leading up to the big day. Day of, I was surprisingly cool as a cucumber and very glad we did it! TL;DR below. Photos

The Search

Honestly, I was ready to give up after 2 weeks of researching. I looked damn near everywhere in California, Hawaii, Mexico and Europe for something reasonable. We ended up finding the perfect venue in my hometown (~45 min from San Jose, CA) by word of mouth/Facebook. This venue was not advertised on any wedding websites at all but man what a steal it was for 200 people!

Venue $7,990- this is an old bank converted into a reception hall with a Great Gatsby/ roaring 20's feel. It was absolutely perfect for us since we're both bankers. Price included set up/clean up, food, open bar, tables, chairs, linens, silverware and 10 pretty candelabras as center pieces. We also opted to rent out the 2nd floor (total waste of money btw!) and that included some fruit platters and cold cuts as appetizers and 2nd open bar. I was super worried that the food would be gross because they don't offer tastings but it was actually delicious! We received a lot of compliments from our guests. The staff was incredibly helpful. Bottom floor cost: $7,990/ max 200 guests. Top Floor: $5,990 max 120 guests (we paid about $12K for both).

Open bar upgrade $500-open bar is included in venue price and probably the biggest selling point for us. We thought, if the food is shitty, at least we'll have unlimited alcohol! Also, we we're able to "upgrade" from the well cocktails and beer (bud light/coors) and take our own. The only caveat was that we had to surrender any leftover alcohol. Funny enough, the bartender ended up giving us back all of our left over wine, score! We ended up taking 2 Costco sized bottles of tequila, 1 Costco sized bottle of Vodka, 3 handles of Crown, 5 cases of Modelo and about 16 bottles of nice wine 5 of which we got back. We spent about $500 on the upgrades including 14 bottles of champagne.

It's time for another /r/CFB Battle Royale update! Part 2

#Hey Everyone!

First off, I apologize for the delay in today's post. It was supposed to come out yesterday, but I got stuck at Megacon way longer than I expected and wasn't able to finish getting everything ready until late last night. Anyways, It's time for part II of the update from last week! This update is going to be covering the unique traits and unit replacements for the last five conferences in the tournament along with screenshots of each cities capitals! As always, feedback is greatly appreciated, I want this thing to be as awesome as possible for all schools. Most of the traits are copies of in-game civs, maybe slightly modified. A lot of the unit replacements are random (turns out there aren't any birds, dogs, or big cats already in the game to replace). I tried to make them make as much sense as I could, but some are definitely just random selections.

For those of you who don't know what's going on, you can read about the /r/CFB Battle Royale these two posts:

Part Two

Part Three

Now, let's get to the good stuff.
