List of books to read if you want to actually become knowledgeable about stocks and not stay a normie who doesn't know what they're doing

I'm about to hit you all with some knowledge, so get your big kid pants on! You should read these books in the order they are listed, because they stack up on top of each other and the lessons learned in one are needed to understand the lessons in the next.

Disclaimer: I am not a financial advisor or registered securities analyst.

Another disclaimer: If you do not know what exactly a stock is, how to buy or sell a stock or what dividends and earnings are, please look up some crash courses on YouTube or something before starting this list.

Let's begin:

  1. The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John Bogle - For those of you who don't know, John Bogle is one of the most important people to ever walk this planet when it comes to stocks and investing for the average person. He founded a little company called Vanguard (ever heard of it?) and he also invented the first index fund. In this book, Bogle gives us a primer on the classical approach to passive, conservative and long-haul investing. He goes into the statistics on how around 90% of mutual funds and most people can not beat the market. He makes it clear and simple that if you want to benefit from stock yields over time, you should deploy your money into index funds and sit back while earnings and dividends carry you to wealth. Many people (probably most people to be honest) can stop here and honestly do perfectly fine. The info in this book is all you need to build serious wealth. You will also understand the theory that picking individual stocks is usually a losers game. One of the reasons I believe you should read this book first is because the lessons you learn inside of it may show you that the rest of the books on this list may not even be worth reading! If you aren't content with boring old index fund investing though, you can read on..
  2. One Up On Wall Street by Peter Lynch - This book is dated but the principles written in its pages ring true to this day. Peter Lynch is considered one of the most successful mutual fund managers of all time. He achieved returns that beat the S&P 500 for over a decade straight for his investors in the Fidelity Magellan Fund in the 70's and 80's. Yes I know I said most people can't beat the market by picking stocks, which is why those who can do it consistently are very special. In this book he teaches you about the tools and strategies he used to achieve those results. It's a great book because it doesn't get too crazy in terms of

Want to promote Friends/Family instead of knowledgeable current employees? Ok, then I'll shut facility down

I thought about this one for a while before posting it. Trying to decide if I wanted to, and if so where it should go. Finally after looking at how it all played out it clearly belongs here. Sit back, as this is going to take a bit to lead into everything and why it happened.

Just to set up some background...

I was working for a Privately run Correction Facility (PCF for short and anonymity) and had been doing so for nearly 10 years. Names will be omitted for anonymity reasons, even though the facility is now long since closed down. The pay is nothing like what State or Federal employees get paid, and it was a constant show of being short handed. I worked my way up through the ranks from being a front line officer in the units, to visitation Sgt, to Shift commander, and finally Security Specialist. Bare with me, as this does take a bit to explain why the upward steps came. When I was a floor officer, I worked with others assigned to the same unit to get a general code of conduct going (IE what we would expect out of the offenders and what we would let slide within reason), because of this the unit we worked on ran so well that most thought of the unit as the 'easiest unit in the facility' to work, but it was because all of us ran it nearly identical and were consistent and fair. Eventually this caused my shift commander to move me to other areas as a test and eventually into visitation. Visitation ended up being one of the most demanding positions I worked at the facility simply because prior officers had done so little and were so behind. Along with my partner (which regularly changed because of the stress of the position) we got the visitation department up to code and went from taking 5 visitors a weekend to over 80 visitors a weekend on the regular. After doing this for roughly 3 years I moved up to Sgt of visitation which was less stressful as it was more supervisory and handling complaints as well as necessary policy revisions.

After nearly 2 years I moved into shift commander. Here I identified several issues with our overtime policy to include significant favoritism issues as well as corrected several reporting flaws that we were constantly being dinged on by PPMU (Private Prison Monitoring Unit of the department of corrections in my state). Because of this PPMU personnel and I became very close as I worked with them on further clarifying and correcting some of the things we weren't doing quite right. This lead to creating several spreadsheets

Knowledgeable people needed to help me understand... Techno ?

Hey there, somewhat long post incoming.

I used to party a lot (free parties, techno festivals etc) when I was 15-20 yo. 2008-2013

Among many other things, I rly liked "techno"... Or that's what I thought until I recently had a party with youngsters telling me the tracks that I love suck, aren't techno... and definitely not minimal.

I admit I've never been knowledgeable about that stuff. That's why I decided to make a post here and ask a couple things to you folks, -that know better than me :)

  1. Was there some kind of trends (the music that I like) during these years that died later ?I also feel like what was once called minimal clearly isn't nowadays.
  2. In what sub-genres would these tracks fit today. Do they even still produce similar stuff ?
  3. How do you guys feel about this list ? Are these some kind of mainstream wannabe techno tracks ?

Here are the tracks I can recall :

Extrawelt - Schmedding

Len Faki - Kraft Und Licht

James Holden - Lump

Eomac - No Name

Anna - Schwarzes Gold

Remote - Veron

Ricardo Tobar - El Sunset

Henry Saiz - The Snake's Speech

Minilogue - Leopard

Stephan Bodzin - Mustang

Max Cooper - Ripple

Nathan Fake - Outhouse

Boby Dowell - Shift

Oliver Huntemann - Delirium

Ty for those who'll take the time to read and answer

Legit Question: Are Non-Asians knowledgeable about Asian culture as much as you want us (Asians) to be knowledgeable about your culture?

The past few days made me realize if Non-Asians are as knowledgeable about Asian culture as much as you want us (Asians) to be knowledgeable about your culture. Just a thought.

I've been wondering why some/most (I don't want to generalize) aren't as knowledgeable on A LOT of topics even though your culture and history has been part of are history books. I wondered to the point that I don't even know if we Asians are part of your history books.

I've kept reading a lot of comments such as "at a young age, I know these stuff" and things like that. While I myself just learned about these issues when I got in to College (18 yrs old) and I'm 25 now still learning but still unfamiliar with a lot of things.

I don't know if this is a sensitive topic but I really just want to know.

Can we stop being jerks to less-knowledgeable people?

There's a terribly high number of jackasses in this sub, people who don't miss an opportunity to be rude to the less-knowledgeable, to look down or mock others, and to be rude and dismissive. None of us know everything, and no one would appreciate being treated like crap just because they were uneducated on a topic, so maybe we should stop being so condescending to others.

IT people notoriously have bad people skills, and it's the number one cause of outsiders disrespecting IT people. It's also a huge reason that we have so little diversity in this industry, we scare away people who are less knowledgeable and unlike us.

I understand that for a few users here, it's their schtick, but when we treat someone like they're dumb just because they don't understand something (even if its obvious to us), it diminishes everyone. I'm not saying we need to cover the world in Nerf, but saying things similar to "I don't even know how you could confuse those things" are just not helpful.

Edit: Please note uneducated does not mean willfully ignorant or lazy.

Edit 2: This isn't about answering dumb questions, it's about not being unnecessarily rude. "Google it" is just fine. "A simple google search will help you a lot." That's great. "Fucking google it." That's uncalled for.

Were there resources available in the 60's to be as knowledgeable as Zodiac about police/weapon tactics without police or military experience?

Was anyone here around back then who can give insight on what it was like in the 60's and if your common everyday citizen without police or military experience could have the resources available to be that knowledgeable about so many things as the Zodiac was? He knew how to make bombs, knew about using the pencil flashlight as a homemade laser sight. He knew how to make artificial fingertips.

And he also knew about things like police withholding facts from the public so they could easier identify a killer later. As he wrote in one of his letters, he included facts only the killer and police would know. He also knew to note and remember the placement of the victims and what they were wearing.

I know it's already a very popular theory that the Zodiac had police and/or a military background. But I'm curious if in the 60's how many regular everyday people would even know these kinds of things. Were there resources back then to get this kind of knowledge without military or police experience? I'm not sure how many books or other things detailing this kind of stuff were around back then.

Today, anyone with a computer or phone could look this stuff up in 5 minutes. I'm curious how some average Joe back then would go about finding this kind of information and how difficult it might be.

Are You Knowledgeable about the Sense of Touch?

I produce a podcast where I solve trivial mysteries and answer unanswerable questions for people I meet on the internet. At the moment I'm looking for someone knowledgeable about the sense of touch to help me answer an unanswerable (AKA empirical) question. The question is, "If I punch myself and it hurts, am I strong or am I weak?" TheΒ podcast is meant to be entertaining and educational, so we're not really going to answer this question, but my intention is to get a littleΒ more educated on neuroscience and the sense of touch by discussing it in an interview.

If you are this person, or if any person or group comes to mind, I would appreciate it so much if you let me know! Maybe you're someone who would like practice being interviewed, or who would like a little bit of exposure, or just someone who likes to talk. You don't need to be particularly expert or entertaining or funny or anything, just more knowledgeable than the average human about neuroscience and touch.

The podcast this is for is unreleased, but you can find my past work and resume on my LinkedIn account. I would post a link here but I don't want to be mistaken for spam, so please ask me for a link and I'm happy to send it.

Thank you!

[serious] Can anyone who's knowledgeable on buyouts comment on the possibility of buying out Martin Jones after this season?

Before we begin, let me say that Jones will forever have a place in Sharks history. He was a huge part of that Western Conference championship team, and possibly the main reason the Cup series against the Penguins was as close as it was. But let's be honest: if Jones continues down this road, DW is going to be looking for a way out. Could a buyout be that option?

Thanks to CapFriendly's buyout calculator, we see what sort of impact a Jones buyout would have over the next six seasons. The hit is most substantial during 23-24 @ almost $3M and turns into a more modest $1.7M in the later seasons. Worth it? I'm leaning towards "it's not," but I'd like to hear other perspectives.
