Romeo and his Juliets

With Valentine's Day on Sunday, we are getting a lot of calls for rooms on Saturday night. This is a phone call I took about an hour ago.

Our guest stars tonight are Me (M) and Romeo - henceforth, shortened to R.

M: Thank you for calling Hotel, how can I help you?

R: Yeah, got any rooms for Saturday?

M: Yes, we do. What type of room would you like?

R: I need a room for me and my ladies.

M: How many people will be in the room?

R: Only 2 at a time (laughs). I want the suite, I treat my women right.

M: Well the suite is not available on that day, but we do have several rooms with a King sized bed.

R: Gimme that one. But I'm gonna need the room cleaned after each lady leaves.

M: Well, I'm sorry, but we won't be able to do that.

R: Then, can I get a new room each time one of the comes in?

M: Only if you pay for the new room.

R: How much is it?

M: With tax, each room will be $135.

R: Nah. You don't get it. I got a lot of ladies and I treat them right. I ain't spending more than $40 for the room.

M: Well, I wish you luck with your ladies, but we will not be able to accommodate you. Have a great night.

I mean, really dude? I hope it was just some idiot trying to be funny, but something tells me he was 100% dead serious.

BONUS SHORT:

(Items in parenthesis are my thoughts)

Me: Thank you for calling Blank Hotel. How can I help you?

Guy: Is this the City Police Department? (Yeah, we just answer with HOTEL to throw you off)

Me: No, this Blank Hotel.

Guy: Is your number 123-4567?

Me: Not even close. It's 987-6851.

Guy: Well, this is the number they gave me. Someone must have written it down wrong. (Ya think?)

Guy hangs up, only to call 1 minute later.

Me: Thank you for calling Blank Hotel. How can I help you?

Guy: Oh man. I dialed the wrong number again.

(Dude, maybe let the drugs wear off before you try to call the police......just a suggestion)

Bachelor franchise owes Juliet Litman

Had this thought while listening to one of her recent podcasts where she mentioned how she had scoped out mattjames919 waaay before he was even cast for Clare’s season and then I remember how she literally had the idea of them doing the GOAT episodes when she did her ranking of every season last year.

Obviously she’s getting her due via the guests she gets and access to production insights, but just seems obvious they’re listening to the ideas she has on her podcast and implementing them and I just wanted to put that out there lol

Charlotte Reads: Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

β€œI see you in the light of the water, in the swaying of the young trees in the spring wind. I see you in the shadows of the great oaks, I hear your voice in the cry of the owl at night.”

So What’s It About?

"Lovely Sorcha is the seventh child and only daughter of Lord Colum of Sevenwaters. Bereft of a mother, she is comforted by her six brothers who love and protect her. Sorcha is the light in their lives: they are determined that she know only contentment.

But Sorcha’s joy is shattered when her father is bewitched by his new wife, an evil enchantress who binds her brothers with a terrible spell, a spell which only Sorcha can liftβ€”by staying silent. If she speaks before she completes the quest set to her by the Fair Folk and their queen, the Lady of the Forest, she will lose her brothers forever.

When Sorcha is kidnapped by the enemies of Sevenwaters and taken to a foreign land, she is torn between the desire to save her beloved brothers, and a love that comes only once. Sorcha despairs at ever being able to complete her task, but the magic of the Fair Folk knows no boundaries, and love is the strongest magic of them all…"

Major spoilers and the discussion of an underage person being sexually assaulted follow.

What I Thought

Two years ago I read Heart’s Blood and it made me sob, then last year I read Dreamer’s Pool and it also made me sob, and now I’ve read Daughter of the Forest and…well, shockingly, it left me a giant mess of emotions, crying away. I haven’t read a book where the main character faces such a nearly-incessant barrage of suffering since I finished Robin Hobb’s several series about Fitz. Combine the constant onslaught of suffering with some Grade A Yearning in one of Marillier’s trademark swoony romances and you’ve got yourself an emotional sucker punch of a book.

I think the closest thing I’ve read to Daughter of the Forest would be Deerskin by Robin McKinley – both books are lush and beautiful and sorrowful, fairy tale-based and largely focused on the young protagonist’s recovery after her world is shattered by being raped. The romance plays a much bigger role in this book than Deerskin, while in Deerskin the central relationship is between the protagonist and her dog, but I do think both are fairly excellent portrayals of survival through trauma. I wrote a post on r/fantasy a while ago about [how I feel about Deerskin and how much it means to me as someone who has experienced sexual assault](https:

On 22 June 1954, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme wrap a brick in a nylon stocking and use it to murder Pauline's mother. They are fifteen and sixteen years old.

Pauline calls herself Charles and Juliet is Deborah. The friends write passionate letters to each other and write young-girl novels, have a crush on the crooner Mario Lanza, dream of a career in Hollywood and invent the kingdom of Borovnia. A fourth world with a knight's castle, noble princes and giant butterflies, even more paradisiacal than the kingdom of heaven. Because in Borovnia, says Juliet, there are no Christians. And the most heavenly of all these fantastic creatures, that's you and me, Pauline writes in her diary.

Her fairy tale is a delusion, and it leads to tragedy.

On 22 June 1954, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme wrap a brick in a nylon stocking and use it to murder Pauline's mother. They are fifteen and sixteen years old. They strike over forty times. The motive: their friendship. The parents feared lesbian love and wanted to separate the girls. In their desperation, the two saw no other way out than murder.

Pauline and Juliet are also oddballs. At the girls' school they wear uniforms like everyone else, but at gym class they sit apart on the bench. Since a bone disease in childhood, Pauline has a limp; Juliet suffers from tuberculosis. One is dumpy, the other smart. An unequal pair: the working-class child and the academician's daughter are united only by their fantastic-romantic vein. Pauline's father stinks of fish by profession, Juliet's daddy sticks his professorial nose mainly in books, the teacher's voice boils over with indignation, the doctor looks sternly over his glasses, and again the parents say: You are a disgrace. Or they dismiss their daughters' passion as kids' stuff.

The setting, Christchurch, is on the South Island of New Zealand, a friendly university town with a church square, cyclists and parks full of daffodils.

The place really exists, the story is true. In the annals of New Zealand, Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme are considered the wickedest women in the world. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment and released early on the condition that they never see each other again. To this day, they live incognito on different continents; only after the completion of a film did it emerge that Juliet is identical with the British bestselling author Anne Perry. The murderess as crime writer - an irritating punch line.

When Pauline and Juliet can't stand it any more, they close their eyes and enter their refuge. There, the doctor and pastor are cut in half with sword strokes, snow-white unicorns graze in the clearing, a

Just finished my first Juliet Marillier book, Wildwood Dancing, and LOVED it! Recommend me similar books please!

I just finished reading Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier, and it was just the book I needed to get me out of a bit of a reading slump. It was well-paced, had a strong and likable female lead, and had elements of folklore and fairytale throughout that really compelled me. I know very little about Romanian history or culture, apart from it being the setting for many vampire stories, and I really enjoyed getting a glimpse of something that felt a bit unknown and different.

I'd love some recommendations for similar types of books or stories. Thanks in advance!
