What's up - I love NFTs, the NBA (more specifically the Knicks), and our community. I'll be here for about an hour answering your q's. Ask me anything!
this week's blu-ray pickup included a copy of jacob's ladder. i love to buy movies i haven't seen, and this one had been recommended to me on this sub in the past. still, i was hesitant; watching annihilation last week triggered my death anxiety pretty badly, and had me in a funk for days. so a movie that was described to me as miserable cosmic horror seemed risky.
it has now been almost 24 hours since i watched it, and holy shit. i CANNOT stop thinking about this movie. tim robbins makes for an incredibly sympathetic lead, and the supporting cast (particularly danny aiello) helps elevate this from one-dimensional misery porn to one of the most horrific, thought-provoking, and, oddly enough, WARM horror films i have ever seen. as someone who experiences a great deal of anxiety related to their own death (i would be the one interpreting angels as demons, to use the language of the film), i found jacob's ladder to be so comforting.
that's not to say it's not a miserable film for most of its duration. it is horrific but also not cartoonish in its portrayal of hell. by the time he ends up in that ice bath, you're feeling as hopeless as jacob. this makes it all the more relieving, however, when you reach the end of the movie and realize he never left vietnam. that this film made me feel genuinely RELIEVED by the death of a beloved protagonist is a feat in and of itself. adding to that the general sense of soothing and the reunion with his son......i just have no words. PLEASE watch the movie, especially if you experience health/death anxiety. in addition to it being a long-standing family tradition, i watch horror as exposure therapy, and this made me feel better about death than i have in years.
• Judge's opinion document here. Judge Lambert just tore these people apart into shreds.
• "The court finds that a six-foot police w/a metal spearhead fixed to the top is, undoubtedly, a dangerous weapon."
• When the Q Shaman's mom told "60 Minutes" that her son was "innocently sitting in a prison cell," it did not exactly help his attempt to be released into her custody.
• The "60 Minutes" interview backfired on these bozos in a huge way:
>The issue, then, is not that defense counsel cannot confidentially communicate with his client. The issue is that when defense counsel is able to speak with his client, he squanders the opportunity for private conversations, preferring instead to conduct a public interview. Such media appearances are undoubtedly conducive to defense counsel’s fame. But they are not at all conducive to an argument that the only way defense counsel could privately communicate with his client is if defendant were temporarily released. Given defense counsel’s decision to use what could have been a confidential videoconference on a media publicity stunt, that argument is so frivolous as to insult the Court’s intelligence. For these reasons, the Court finds that defendant has not met his burden of establishing a “compelling reason” necessitating his temporary release. 18 U.S.C. §3142(i).
• Mama Chansely shooting her mouth off in the "60 Minutes" was another hugely bad move:
>January 6th reveal defendant’s current state of mind and willingness to break the law. Finally, defendant’s plan to return to his mother’s house would not mitigate his risk of flight. In the March 4, 2021 interview with 60 Minutes+, defendant’s mother repeatedly stated that her son did nothing wrong on January 6th. 60 Minutes+ Interview, supra at 13:23-13:40, 17:40-17:52. Instead, she said, her son merely “walked through open doors” and was “escorted into the Senate.” Id. Defendant’s mother further stated that she believes defendant to be “innocently sitting in a prison cell.” Id. at 17:44. Yeah, imma simp a bit, if you'd let me.
Like many others, I discovered Community on Netflix during the pandemic, got instantly hooked, blah blah blah. Right from the start, Britta was one of the most relatable characters I've seen, and the sillier and more chaotic she got the more relatable she became because that's exactly me when my walls are down and I allow myself to be me around other people. Also, the fact that Dan Harmon and the writers allowed Gillian to use her natural comedic talents instead of shackling her as the typical love interest character was the best decision they could've made.
So, long story short, I got positively smitten with Gillian, which led to binge LOVE (again, ridiculously relatable), and to continue the journey through her filmography, including Ibiza, Don't Think Twice, Life of the Party, I Used To Go Here, etc, and she's quickly become my favorite actress.
Any other Gillian/Britta fans in the house?
Its been a rough off season. Pray for me. It probably won’t help
His wife tells him that she is unattracted to him. The next day she brings him clothes that she hopes will make her attractive to her. How is that not a complete insult.
Imagine if a man had done that to a woman... "Here honey. Wear this instead of what you like because this will make me like you more. "
WTF. They just need to give up. She is not into this and never should have signed up.
Ok so, as the title says, I really enjoyed playing as Jacob and I wanted to rant about it so here we go
So at the beginning of quarantine I needed some new video games. I already played most of the Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, and Battlefield games and I wanted a new franchise so I got Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. I loved it and got Assassin's Creed III (which I also liked), and the Ezio Trilogy. I fell in love with the characters, stories, gameplay, and parkour elements and my love for the series began. My cousin had Syndicate and gave me it since he wasn't the biggest fan of the series and I went into the game with a very closed mind. I knew of the hate on the game, how bad the gameplay was and the parkour was and the antagonists and protagonists so I was already expecting to hate it
Now I don't love Syndicate. It does a lot of things horribly wrong (*cough* the combat and skills *cough*) but I still think it was a pretty solid game. The gameplay was fine, the parkour was fun, the grappling hook or whatever you want to call it was actually really fun for me since I hated crossing those huge gaps in the cities of Assassin's Creed III, and I actually really enjoyed playing as Jacob
Now here is where my rant starts. So for background, I've played all the major Assassin's Creed games up to Syndicate, so I have not played the RPG games (though I am planning on playing Origins) so I enjoyed all the games and liked all the characters (except Shay but that's another rant for another day). So when I was first playing as Jacob I didn't really like him. He was childish, not the smartest, and just weird. But as the game progressed I actually started to like him. With all the Assassin's Creed protagonists they have always been very "And then my dad and brother and sister and pet fish and dog died so now I'm depressed" and if you do that with one or two characters it's fine and exciting but if Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, and Arno all have that same routine it gets a bit boring and it loses the same flair that it used to. Don't get me wrong I love all those characters but I just thought they were always like too based on the fact they have a bad childhood (except Ezio he is written very well and his backstory works very well with him)
With Jacob, he just seems like an average dude. He isn't "The best pirate to sail the seas" or the "Wisest of men to ever live" or anything like that. He is just an Englishman with a tophat who wants to liberate Lon... keep reading on reddit ➡
