The CIA Triad and Its Real-World Application

What is the CIA triad?

Information security revolves around the three key principles:  confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA). Depending upon the environment, application, context or use case, one of these principles might be more important than the others. For example, for a financial agency, confidentiality of information is paramount, so it would likely encrypt any classified document being electronically transferred in order to prevent unauthorized people from reading its contents. On the other hand, organizations like internet marketplaces would be severely damaged if their network were out of commission for an extended period, so they might focus on strategies for ensuring high availability over concerns about encrypted data.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is concerned with preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information. The access could be intentional, such as an intruder breaking into the network and reading the information, or it could be unintentional, due to the carelessness or incompetence of individuals handling the information. The two main ways to ensure confidentiality are cryptography and access control.

Cryptography

Encryption helps organization meet the need to secure information from both accidental disclosure and internal and external attack attempts. The effectiveness of a cryptographic system in preventing unauthorized decryption is referred to as its strength. A strong cryptographic system is difficult to crack. Strength is also be expressed as work factor, which is an estimate of the amount of time and effort that would be necessary to break a system.

A system is considered weak if it allows weak keys, has defects in its design or is easily decrypted. Many systems available today are more than adequate for business and personal use, but they are inadequate for sensitive military or governmental applications. Cryptography has symmetric and asymmetric algorithms.

Symmetric Algorithms

Symmetric algorithms require both the sender and receiver of an encrypted message to have the same key and processing algorithms. Symmetric algorithms generate a symmetric key (sometimes called a secret key or private key) that must be protected; if the key is lost or stolen, the security of system is compromised. Here are some of the common standards for symmetric algorithms:

  • Data Encryption Standard (DES). DES ha

Our Sister Planet's Hidden Horror (Part One)

On April 23rd, 2019, the communications specialist aboard the International Space Station began receiving an unknown signal transmitted by an unidentified piece of debris outside of Earth’s orbit. The contents of said, signal was analyzed but the data was too heavily encrypted but details later revealed within them one last log and audio cue. Said contents have since been claimed by an organization claiming to work for and with the United Nations.

Encrypted files reclaimed from project “Our Sister Planet” on █████. 2019. The final log contained in the encryption correlates to an approaching anomaly located outside of██████████; with projections marking its destination to Earth.

Current Status: Retrieve and Secured Objective: Immediate Decryption of Data Files Overseer: ██████████ Organization: {Data has been expunged}

Notes: Decryption of files is to be immediately performed. Once files have been decrypted, contents are to immediately be transferred over to █████. For further investigation and possible termination of file if needed.

Below is the translated and recovered log.

Entry Made By: Jefferies “Jeff” S. Winchester

The stars beyond our little blue planet were meant to be the future of humanity. To expand beyond the current fixation and reality of what we have come to call home. To explore the secrets of deep space and uncover its past and perhaps, finally solve the mystery behind life on Earth. However, leaving the safety of our world meant leaving behind all that we were. Even so, we needed to reach beyond.

And as I reflect now. Who would’ve known that such darkness lay hidden away underneath our nose…

In my final act of desperation, I hope to relay one final message to command and, as well as, to humanity. Hopefully, it buys them time to prepare. It may no longer be a warning but at least it will give the people a chance to brace themselves for the despairs to come. With the last three hours of oxygen I have left, I will inform in detail, a recollection of events that lead to one of the darkest discoveries made in space since the Moon Landing. Please note, these records are of my final testament and respect to the crew of the “Red Swan.”

I deeply apologize for what we have unleashed. If there had been any o

A BRIEF OVERVIEW ABOUT $JUP

This is an extract from the website.

"Our applications can be internal or external facing based on the clients and regulatory requirements.

The open-source Jupiter software is the core of our operations. It powers our public blockchain, allowing anyone to participate. Jupiter can also be deployed in a private network based on the clients’ requirements for their approved users only.

Data is always encrypted – Locally at the level of the application using military-grade encryption, then it is sent to processing nodes via SSL and encrypted using Jupiter’s built in protocol encryption before being stored.

Automatic data replication across nodes – Jupiter fully and automatically replicates data to any conforming node on the Jupiter network. A private blockchain is an alternative to store sensitive information whereby company policy or laws make it impossible to store them on the public chain.

Data is immutable, nodes are easily replaced – Every node in a public decentralized system or private blockchain has a consensus correct copy of the blockchain database. Data quality is maintained and agreed upon by consensus algorithms and stored in a computationally trusted decentralized database which allows full verification",

Hammer and Anvil - Part 1 of 4 (Unexpected Allies)

[A/N: I wrote this about a year ago for the HFY subreddit, but then I found this one, so I figured I'd crosspost. Enjoy.]

[Next]

The Xan’thuilli ship hit us in hyperspace, lurking in the mass-shadow of a star and then striking as we passed by. We tumbled, flailing. Our hyperspace engines stuttered and cut out, and I heard the alarms as one of them failed. From the sound of it, something was on fire.

With a horrific wrench that almost made me shed my vestigial tail, the Promise Upheld was suddenly back in realspace. The alarms were still wailing, but our battleshields went up so that when the Worms slid out of hyperspace and slammed another attack into us, it splashed harmlessly into the void. However, a second alarm joined the first.

“Field calibration has slipped!” warned the shield-tech, an amphibioid from Deep Dreaming that was in the middle of its asexual cycle. Its name sounded like water gurgling down a drain, so we'd called it Burble. “We lost three-sixteenths in that hit alone!” Dreamers had eight fingers and eight toes, so when they went civilised, they jumped straight into tech with a sixteen-base number system. It wasn’t the weirdest xeno-habit I’ve ever had to adapt to.

I worked the electronic warfare (known for some obscure reason as 'weps'), ensuring they didn’t lock us up with their weapons, while the guns crew fired back and the rest of us did what we could to not get dead in the next few microcycles.

“How long to recalibrate?” snapped Captain Ja’kara. She was a warm-blooded reptilian like me, but she was a Pillan while I was a Fastrek. Still, species doesn’t matter when you’re fighting for your life. Crew is crew is crew, as Ja’kara told me once.

“Seven-sixteenths of a demi-cycle!” Burble replied at once. “Five-sixteenths if I slice the edges off.”

The ship lurched, and I saw three close stars whirl by, then shots skipped off the edge of our shield. Everything shuddered. “Helm, take us into hyper again!” ordered Ja’kara. “Shields, get calibrating! Weps, blind the bastards!”

The good thing about crewing the Promise Upheld was that everyone trusted everyone else to do their job. Ja’kara didn’t need to tell me how to do my job; as soon as she started giving orders, I was already setting up the biggest hyperspace flare I could manage, to slow the Xan’thuilli ship

Hacker group uses Solaris zero-day to breach corporate networks. The zero-day appears to have been bought off a black-market website for $3,000.

Mandiant, the investigations unit of security firm FireEye, has published details today about a new threat actor it calls UNC1945 that the security firm says it used a zero-day vulnerability in the Oracle Solaris operating system as part of its intrusions into corporate networks.

Regular targets of UNC1945 attacks included the likes of telecommunications, financial, and consulting companies, the Mandiant team said in a report published today.

Old group, new zero-day

While UNC1945 activity went as far back as 2018, Mandiant said the group caught their eye earlier this year after the threat actor utilized a never-before-seen vulnerability in the Oracle Solaris operating system.

Tracked as CVE-2020-14871, the zero-day was a vulnerability in the Solaris Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) that allowed UNC1945 to bypass authentication procedures and install a backdoor named SLAPSTICK on internet-exposed Solaris servers.

Mandiant said the hackers then used this backdoor as an entry point to launch reconnaissance operations inside corporate networks and move laterally to other systems.

To avoid detection, Mandiant said the group downloaded and installed a QEMU virtual machine running a version of the Tiny Core Linux OS.

This custom-made Linux VM came pre-installed with several hacking tools like network scanners, password dumpers, exploits, and reconnaissance toolkits that allowed UNC1945 to scan a company's internal network for weaknesses and move laterally to multiple systems, regardless if they ran Windows or *NIX-based systems.

unc1945.png Image: FireEye Mandiant said it observed the group using an assortment of open-source penetration testing and security tools, but also custom malware strains.

The open-source toolkits included the likes of Mimikatz, Powersploit, Responder, Procdump, CrackMapExec, PoshC2, Medusa, and the JBoss Vulnerability Scanner, all well-known in the cyber-security industry.

But UNC1945 also showed the ability to create and operate custom malware, with Mandiant linking UNC1945 intrusions to (new and old) malware strains like:

EVILSUN - a remote exploitation tool that gains access to Solaris 10 and 11 systems of SPARC or i386 architecture using a vulnerability (CVE-2020-14871) exposed by SSH keyboard-interactive authentication. The remote exploitation tool makes SSH connections to hosts passed on the command line. The default port is the normal SSH port (22), but this may be overridden. Episode 2: Spread of Misinformation

Read on Medium

(NEW) Join our Discord server: https://discord.io/solutions

Our second episode of Solutions is about misinformation: what is it, why does it spread, who spreads it, and what can be done about it? The problem of misinformation is perhaps more pressing now than it ever has been, as social media and divisive politics have reshaped the way that we interact with the world around us.

As was the case with our previous installment, this article works both as show notes for the podcast and as a standalone article. In this episode, we modified our research strategy, spending more time collaborating with each other during our preparation. A topic such as this requires a lot of diligence on our part, and we believe that this improved process allowed for a more thorough approach.

What are your thoughts about the current state of the industry's hiring/interviewing practices mainly revolving around the memorization and regurgitation of Leetcode solutions? We all know that none of us will ever need to find the most efficient way to traverse an n x n matrix to find the longest contiguous sequence of integers within 45 minutes in our real line of work. You know, I believe that we should be interviewing for what the job will actually be. Ignoring MongoDB's interviewing practices, I think back to one of the best interviews I ever had.
I had dinner with the interviewing team the night before. No idea what to expect.
I walk in the next day at 8am and there is a terminal and some instructions. They went something like this
"Write any piece of code you want. Here are some examples and here are instructions on how to use the editor. Reach out to any of us for help during the day, we're all around you in the next room.
We're happy to take you out to lunch at noon and talk about whatever you want. You may or may not join us; your choice.
At 4pm, your coding will be over. We'll come in and talk about it together.
Here's the rub: It has to work. We don't care how complicated or simple a problem you choose, but if it doesn't work, you can just leave at 4pm. We are in the business of scoping our work and writing excellent working software every day.
We look forward to working with you today. Enjoy!"
Needless to say I didn't go out to lunch with them.
And I was indeed offered the job, but it was a close thing. The code didn't work until probably 3:45. I wish I could remember what it was.
MANY extra points if any of you can name the company.
^(the below is a reply to the above)

It certainly sounds interesting. It sounds like a better test and more creative than white boarding. But it also sounds pretty brutal in terms of time and effort. White boarding (which I don't agree with) is typically an hour. This sounds like a full day's work. I hope this was for a fairly high level software development job that you were fairly likely to get going into it. Be

[Procurement] US Military Development

[M] While I was writing this post I realized that Erhard had already started work on new MBTs and IFVs. Consider these to be the fruition of those projects [M]

Decisive Lethality Platform / M1 Grant

The M1 Abrahams has long been a hallmark of American land power, yet it's increasingly advanced age has started showing. Variant after variant of the M1 has been rolled out, yet it has become clear that a transition to the 4th Generation of Main Battle Tanks is needed to ensure American superiority, or at the bare minimum parity, with its rivals.

TARDEC has already established a list of the main features needed for a successful American Next-Generation, with Mobility and Autonomous Operations being prioritized, along with a shift from the Abrahms's fuel and maintenance hungry Gas-Jet Engine towards a more conventional diesel-fed propulsion system. The New M1 Grant is the culmination of the long-running NGCV program and seeks to ensure that the US remains the pre-eminent land, sea and air. Mobility will best be exemplified by placing an emphasis on making the DLP lighter and quicker compared to even the latest M1 Abrahms Variants.

Autonomous operations, or more specifically Optionally-Manned Vehicles, have also been a primary feature of Next-Generation Combat Vehicle program, and focus on the possibility of utilizing remote control and AI to allow for limited unmanned operation of select Army Vehicles. The technology has already been implemented in the successor to the M2 Bradley, and will now be utilized to ensure that American armour is able to engage the enemy at longer distances.

A leading reason for the implementation of Autonomous technology is the ability to utilize Machine Learning and Algorithms to collect combat Data and suggest tactics on the basis of Tactical algorithms. Such technology will be vital in ensuring that we are able to detect patterns in engagements and develop tactics and specialized tools to counteract them, ensuring American military pre-eminence. The end goal of such efforts is to form a tank division controlled by one AI algorithm, which is able to attack and defend as one.

Many other improvements, notably the aforementioned engine replacement, a new 145mm main barrel tailored to use Xm1147 Multi-Purpose Rounds, and the integration of general improvements which will ensure the final product of the DLP will be a force to be reckoned with.

Proposal: The Sia Foundation

Vision Statement

A common sentiment is brewing online; a shared desire for the internet that might have been. After decades of corporate encroachment, you don't need to be a power user to realize that something has gone very wrong.

In the early days of the internet, the future was bright. In that future, when you sent an instant message, it traveled directly to the recipient. When you needed to pay a friend, you announced a transfer of value to their public key. When an app was missing a feature you wanted, you opened up the source code and implemented it. When you took a picture on your phone, it was immediately encrypted and backed up to storage that you controlled. In that future, people would laugh at the idea of having to authenticate themselves to some corporation before doing these things.

What did we get instead? Rather than a network of human-sized communities, we have a handful of enormous commons, each controlled by a faceless corporate entity. Hey user, want to send a message? You can, but we'll store a copy of it indefinitely, unencrypted, for our preference-learning algorithms to pore over; how else could we slap targeted ads on every piece of content you see? Want to pay a friend? You can—in our Monopoly money. Want a new feature? Submit a request to our Support Center and we'll totally maybe think about it. Want to backup a photo? You can—inside our walled garden, which only we (and the NSA, of course) can access. Just be careful what you share, because merely locking you out of your account and deleting all your data is far from the worst thing we could do.

You rationalize this: "MEGACORP would never do such a thing; it would be bad for business." But we all know, at some level, that this state of affairs, this inversion of power, is not merely "unfortunate" or "suboptimal" – No. It is degrading. Even if MEGACORP were purely benevolent, it is degrading that we must ask its permission to talk to our friends; that we must rely on it to safeguard our treasured memories; that our digital lives are completely beholden to those who seek only to extract value from us.

At the root of this issue is the centralization of data. MEGACORP can surveil you—because your emails and video chats flow through their servers. And MEGACORP can control you—because they hold your data hostage. But centralization is a solution to a technical problem: How can we make the user's data accessible from anywhere in the world, on any device? For a long time, no

Cold Storage Step by Step Tutorial for securely generating and storing Bitcoin keys on a password encrypted LUKS USB drive. Every #BSV investor should take time to learn these Bitcoin skills. If you are holding your keys on hot wallets please read this.

Preface:

It has been known for a while that storage solutions for Bitcoin, BSV have been more difficult for mainstream users. Since BSV is the real Bitcoin, it has been feared, hated, attacked, delisted, and has become a pariah in the “crypto” industry. The reason is because the true Bitcoin is light, and crypto is darkness, by definition. And there is nothing more terrifying to vampires than light.

The enemies of Satoshi and Bitcoin have landed heavy blows against us, we have been delisted from exchanges. We have been censored, harassed, slandered, DDOSed, and persecuted for being real Bitcoiners. Hardware wallets have dropped support for BSV, while mocking and attacking us, and playing dirty tricks and supporting thousands of scamcoins and illegal securities instead. Some BSV members still use these hardware wallets with electrumSV as a hack-a-round solution, but it is riddled with bugs and does not work well. Recently people had to downgrade firmware to make it work again. I don’t think it is a wise decision to hold BSV on a device run by a company that wants to sabotage Bitcoin. So my advice is lets de-list them instead.

No weapon forged against us shall prosper. At the end of the day, what does not kill us only makes us stronger. True Bitcoiners need to learn to adapt to the hostile conditions in this space. But I was somewhat horrified recently when I polled some twitter followers to find out that less than 1/3 of BSV investors are using secure storage for their Bitcoins, and over 2/3 of people are primarily storing their coins in exchanges or on phone/desktop wallets. Storing coins in hot wallets and on exchanges leaves them more vulnerable to theft and loss. Its time to take responsibility and get educated on how to store your Bitcoins properly. It will take a small amount of time and effort, but it will be well worth it.

When using cold storage you can achieve a much higher level of security than hardware devices. Also think of the risk to the BSV community and the Bitcoin economic system with so many people using hot wallets and exchanges for their investments. If a popular wallet or service has an exploit and everyone loses their coins it is going to really damage the Bitcoin ecosystem. Old-timers will remember the Mt.Gox hack and what that did to the perception of Bitcoin for years. In fact it

real esate tech trends for 2021 [must watch out]

Real estate mobile apps and agent websites are getting more and more popular as a way of checking out the proper property, so those that are professionally engaged during this field and getting to expand their business should, within the first place, understand the market and appearance out for the newest land mobile app tech trends. Such awareness will allow you to form informed decisions embarking thus on the journey of lasting business promotion and development.

  1. Business intelligence and a rise in data volumes.

The future of land mobile application development is tough to imagine without business intelligence. Besides, successful app development shouldn't be separated from data that generally tends to grow at an exponential rate. Keeping these factors in mind, more efficient business processes are getting an attainable outcome.

Business intelligence derived from big data is already one among the most important trends in property management. It can empower a true estate application affecting the method of interaction of property owners, agents, and customers within the app. BI provides various tools for the optimization of decision-making.

Business analysis algorithms are applied to urge intelligent predictions defining the relationships of app users. Then, it's easier to offer a solution to the question about what's getting to happen. Reviewing internal data and analyzing business processes, BI is increasing your data-driven land business. With business intelligence software solutions, you'll optimize your operations leveraging and processing all incoming data.

Blockchain.

Real estate is that the very industry where blockchain technology can prosper. For variety of reasons, the utilization of cryptocurrencies in land was recognized to be beneficial. Thus, in late 2017, it became possible to shop for homes via bitcoins and bitcoin-like currencies. An apartment in Kyiv, Ukraine, was the primary property sold using blockchain technology. Following market trends in land , variety of blockchain land startups have emerged since then. This happened not for nothing — land transactions are subject to certain disturbing problems:

  1. Possibility of fraud. Risk of fraud is probably going to exist as long as land property agreements are in paper form for they will be falsified by people then. Blockchain minimizes this risk. The so-called smart contracts can link digit

"Freedom and Liberty is like air, when you don't receive it, you suffer." - Jalil Huseyngulu oglu Mammadguluzadeh

“Julius Christopher Paddington.” A voice echoed around the room as his heavy eyelids slowly lightened. A harsh blinding light made him scrunch his eyes as soon as he opened them. “It is a mistake for you to come here.

“You could have just walked along with us. But you just had to, didn't you?” A figure speaking slowly darkened and came to focus as Paddington’s eyes squinted away from the light source. He sounded familiar. Of course, he met him before.

“Geng Guohong,” Paddington muttered as a bitter sensation surfaced in his lips. “That wasn’t necessary.”

“Your arrival was not necessary, Paddington.” Geng slammed the table and shoved the lamp away. “Look at me when I speak. What you have done hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and you will not be forgiven for this.”

“Even the slightest bout of breaths would shatter your glass hearts.” Paddington jeered. “I’m pretty sure the Chinese people are more resilient than what you claim.”

“Enough!” He slammed the table with both of his hands this time, red as his face. A vein coursing down his temple was physically visible. His widened bloodshot eyes stared right at Paddington as if someone told him that just doing that would make a person disappear. Even so, Paddington knew that at this point he had already technically disappeared.

In his native Britain, China rarely surfaced in the news other than the occasional trade deals made, there was not much. That changed when the spotlights of the stage known as politics focused on a southern Chinese city. Even the smallest and least known of Oceanian nations’ attention was caught by this event. [Event] Necessary Measures

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

TL;DR: Over the course of the past five years, Nigeria has become a truly totalitarian state.

It has been five years since Kubura Adeoun has taken control of Nigeria’s government. Five years of centralization of authority within the office of the Presidency. Five years of central government encroachment on the authority of state government. Five years of a government that has brooked no dissent and no opposition, five years of a government that has ignored precedents, court rulings, and even the Constitution. In the beginning, opposition figures in the National Assembly, in state governments, and in the courts resisted the dictatorship growing in Nigeria. Moderate figures within the cabinet thought they could restrain Adeoun’s most authoritarian tendencies. Such treason against the state has disappeared. Opposition leaders have all either gone silent or been silenced. Those weak enough to encourage moderation have been fobbed off with powerless posts or simply forced to resign. President Adeoun is in control. And he has extended that control over the rest of Nigeria.

Security forces in Nigeria were broken up in 1983, creating domestic, foreign, and military agencies. These disparate forces oftentimes proved incapable of combating the criminal elements of Nigerian society and were simply protection rackets filled with corrupt and incompetent sycophants who would say yes to whatever the president or his minions ordered. This stain on Nigerian society festered under President Buhari’s failed administration where their failures led to the worst terrorist attacks in Nigerian history. The military coup that ousted him was followed by vicious purges which was followed by even more purges after President Adeoun’s election which have hollowed out these security services but also removed fraudulent elements from police and intelligence agencies. This led to the military taking control of some of the security duties that had previously fallen on the Nigeria Police Force and State Security Service due to the weakening of these two agencies; however, President Adeoun, in a move to balance political power among all armed power blocs in the country, has restored these duties to the Nigeria Police Force following major reforms to the agency and ended martial law. The supervising body for law enforcement in Nigeria has been unified under the Ministry of the Interior with the Ministry of P

Best Cell Phone Hacker for Hire

Cell phone hacking is the practice of gaining unauthorized access into a cell phone or mobile phone, in order to retrieve or alter data or information. This is usually done through different means which include intercepting telephone calls or accessing voicemail messages. When the unauthorized access is to the phone user's conversation, it is more commonly referred to as phone tapping.

The term came to prominence during the News International phone hacking scandal, in which it was alleged (and in some cases proved in court) that a major European tabloid newspaper the News of the World had been involved in the interception of voicemail messages of the notable Family, and other public figures.

Some Ways Cell Phone Hackers for Hire Operate

Voicemail Hacking: The unauthorized remote access to voicemail systems, such as exposed by the News International phone hacking scandal, is possible because of weaknesses in the implementations of these systems by telcos.

Some PABX systems have a distant voicemail feature, which is accessed by entering a password when the initial greeting is being played. A hacker can call a direct dial number with voicemail, and then try to use the default password or guess it, or then select the "call back" function, and enter a premium rate number for the call back. The PABX calls back the premium rate line, confirming the password for the hacker. To stop this form of hacking, the call back feature on the PABX can be turned off, or a strong password used.

Mobile Phone Hack: An analysis of user-selected PIN codes suggested that ten numbers represent 15% of all iPhone passcodes, with "1234" and "0000" being the most common, with years of birth and graduation also being common choices. Even if a four-digit PIN is randomly selected, the key space is very small, making PINs significantly easier to brute force than most passwords; someone with physical access to a handset secured with a PIN can therefore feasibly determine the PIN in a short time.

Mobile phone microphones can be activated remotely by security agencies or telcos, without any need for physical access, as long as the battery has not been removed. This "roving bug" feature has been used by law enforcement agencies and intelligence services to listen in on nearby conversations.

Other techniques for phone hacking include tricking a mobile phone user into downloading malware which monitors activity on the phone.

What is Chaos Engineering: Theory, Principles & Benefits

In the past, software systems ran in highly controlled environments on-premise and managed by an army of sysadmins. Today, migration to the cloud is relentless; the stage has completely shifted.

Systems are no longer monolithic and localized; they depend on many globalized uncoupled systems working in unison, often in the form of ethereal microservices.

It is no surprise that Site Reliability Engineers have risen to prominence in the last decade. Modern IT infrastructure requires robust systems thinking and reliability engineering to keep the show on the road. Downtime is not an option.

A 2020 ITIC Cost of Downtime survey indicated that 98% of organizations said that a single hour of downtime costs more than $150,000. 88% showed that 60 minutes of downtime costs their business more than $300,000. And 40% of enterprises reported that one hour of downtime costs their organizations $1 million to more than $5 million.

To increase the resiliency of these systems, the discipline of chaos engineering emerged. Stress testing a system with chaotic experiments by randomly engineering failures reveals the Achilles heel. Simulating adverse conditions allows engineers to integrate safeguards, circuit breakers, and incident response mechanisms. This post will dive into this chaotic artform.

What is Chaos Engineering?

As elucidated by the Chaos Community:

"Chaos Engineering is the discipline of experimenting on a system to build confidence in the system's capability to withstand turbulent conditions in production."

Most engineers' first exposure to this discipline most likely came from Chaos Monkey. A tool invented by Netflix, it is responsible for randomly terminating instances in production to ensure that engineers implement their services to be highly available and resilient to pseudo-random termination of instances and services within the Netflix architecture. At the time, Netflix had recently migrated to Amazon Web Services and needed to create a framework to prove its infrastructure could survive a fallout and au

The Wager: Opening Shot

Hello again, welcome back if you’ve been following along, and welcome if it’s your first time! For you first timers I’d recommend starting at the beginning.

This one was a doozy, and the longest installment by far. I welcome comments and feedback, and I hope you enjoy this latest chapter!

-5- Opening Shot

The only regrets had by the captains of the Atlantis Fleet was that they wouldn’t see the devastation their cannons wrought on the invaders up close. Moments after Humanity’s reply to the demand to lay down and die was delivered at half the speed of light, space snapped back to its original shape, opening back the chasm of emptiness as a buffer to retaliation.

Twelve ships were ripped apart from the initial impact, seventeen were destroyed from debris and fallout from the first strikes, and another forty were caught in the explosions as the wrath of Poseidon Deep crashed into them.

A full quarter of the fleet meant to be our doom laid waste.

The ships on the periphery of the expanding ruin appeared to shimmer as the blooms of fire from the devastation lapped against them. Additional observations showed ripples like stones in water as debris impacted on the hulls of their ships. Whatever protection they had proved wanting in the face of the onslaught.

The invading fleet quickly shifted away from the kill zone, moving around and past the floating graveyard like a river rushing over rocks. The ships split into four smaller groups, each appearing to adopt a different evasion tactic and maneuvering method.

One fleet accelerated toward Neptune with near-light, straight-line speed. In hindsight, we believe they assumed our opening volley was our shock and awe attack and we required time to fire again. Their assumptions were corrected with a wall of relativistic death that shattered their fleet. Their destruction was so complete, valid concerns about debris still traveling near light speed were put to rest.

The remaining three fleets had taken arcing paths along, above, and below the orbital plane of the system. After the obliteration of the fleet attacking Neptune, one group began moving as a swarm with random swaying and looping paths while maintaining their general heading. Another arranged into a mostly flat plane with undulation like a school of fish. The third adopted a method of rearranging in geometric patterns such that crossing ships would overlap and obscure those around them, potentially

Podcast Episode: From Your Face to Their Database Episode 005 of EFF’s How to Fix the Internet Abi Hassen joins EFF hosts Cindy Cohn and Danny O’Brien as they discuss the rise of facial recognition technology, how this increasingly powerful identification tool is ending up in the hands of law enforcement, and what that means for the future of public protest and the right to assemble and associate in public places. In this episode you’ll learn about: The Black Movement Law Project, which Abi co-founded, and how it has evolved over time to meet the needs of protesters; Why the presumption that people don’t have any right to privacy in public spaces is challenged by increasingly powerful identification technologies; Why we may need to think big when it comes to updating the U.S. law to protect privacy; How face recognition technology can have a chilling effect on public participation, even when the technology isn’t  accurate; How face recognition technology is already leading to the wrongful arrest of innocent people, as seen in a recent case of a man in Detroit; How gang laws and anti-terrorism laws have been the foundation of a legal tools that can now be deployed against political activists; Understanding face recognition technology within the context of a range of powerful surveillance tools in the hands of law enforcement; How we can start to fix the problems caused by facial recognition through increased transparency, community control, and hard limits on law enforcement use of face recognition technology, How Abi sees the further goal is to move beyond restricting or regulating specific technologies to a world where public protests are not so necessary, as part of reimagining the role of law enforcement. Abi is a political philosophy student, attorney, technologist, co-founder of the Black Movement-Law Project, a legal support rapid response group that grew out of the uprisings in Ferguson, Baltimore, and elsewhere. He is also a partner (currently on leave) at O’Neill and Hassen LLP, a law practice focused on indigent criminal defense. Prior to this current positions, he was the Mass Defense Coordinator at the National Lawyers Guild. Abi has also worked as a political campaign manager and strategist, union organizer, and community organizer. He conducts trainings, speaks, and writes on topics of race, technology, (in)justice, and the law. The legality of an electronic bill of lading

https://preview.redd.it/fdar2tfa4zy51.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0341dad89050f7ba6a035f2feb902106e710883

This article is the first of two explainer articles, to offer a complete picture of how a blockchain bill of lading is created and transferred, and what the legal implications of this method are. The second article will go into detail about the legal implications of a global, electronic bill of lading solution.

There are plenty of occasions when someone asks about the legality and the technicalities of the electronic, blockchain-based Smart Bill of Lading, as implemented by CargoX on its CargoX Platform for Blockchain Document Transfer (BDT).

To answer this question, it is best to first outline the technical design of this global, neutral, public blockchain platform, and show how the document encryption, transfer, and global decentralized document repository work.

This article will explain the meaning of the decentralized document repository on the IPFS, document tokenization with non-fungible tokens, blockchain ownership transfer, and the legal aspects of this type of solution deployed in the global trade, shipping, and finance.

* * *

There is a stark contrast between an electronic document of title solution and a physical paper medium for transferring the title with the help of courier services.

The electronic documents – focusing on Bills of Lading alone, this can include electronic B/L, Smart B/L, blockchain B/L, and similar subtypes or synonyms – strictly separate the notion of title from the notion of content.

The old, centralized system approach

In a traditional electronic system, documents are uploaded in PDF or similar format. It is saved on persistent storage within the system, and the title of the document is recorded in its database. This is a risky endeavor, as it requires the user to put all their trust in one single entity – the owner and/or administrator of the database, who can always alter the data without anyone knowing. The electronic system – both storage and database – is usually centralized, owned by one company, and centrally managed. The documents are stored at a specific location, either on-site or in the cloud, which is also managed by a central business entity (most often Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or similar infrastructure).

The new, distributed document repository approach

With a public, neutral blockchain network, such as the[ public Ethereum network](h

Chrome OS Beta channel got promoted to Chrome OS 85. Here is what changed!

_All right crew!

The Chrome OS Beta Channel got promoted to milestone 85 a little over a week ago - from 84.0.4147.94 to 85.0.4183.39. As with every new milestone update, this brings massive new changes to the table, offering several new features, bug fixes, and security enhancements to better improve your Chrome OS user experience. Due to the sheer size, I may be missing a few things here and there. Here is what changed!

Like my content and want to buy me a coffee? You can support me on ko-fi using this link or by using the link in my Reddit profile. If you want to be kept up to date with everything new to Chrome OS, feel free to give me a follow. Thanks in advance for your support!! :)

Featured changes

This section showcases changes I believe to be the most significant to this build of Chrome OS. They make a massive impact to the user experience and may be something to look forward to when upgrading your system to this build. These changes will also be listed in the "Notable changes" section of the post.

  1. New accessibility feature to change cursor colors in Chrome OS. This feature has 5 colors for now: Red, Orange, Green, Blue, and Purple. Custom cursor colors are important for visibility to some users with vision impairment (e.g. color blindness). To change the cursor colors, you’ll need to enable chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-accessibility-cursor-colors. See my reddit post to see what it looks like!
  2. The print management feature flag is enabled by default, which allows users to manage and view their print history on Chrome OS. The print managing app will display ongoing print jobs and will dynamically update depending on the status of the job. When a print job notification shows up in Chrome OS, tapping on the notification will open the print jobs management app. Click here to see what it looks like!
  3. The Crostini USB allow unsupported feature flag is enabled by default, which allows developers to mount their USB serial devices to their Chromebook without having to change a flag in their Linux container. Your mileage may vary as some serial devices will not work (FTDI, CH341, etc).
  4. **The Port forwarding feature flag is enabled by default, which allows users to set up multiple netw

[SUMMARY] Monthly Video Update - November 2020

Transcript of the Tau-Chain & Agoras Monthly Video Update – November 2020

Karim:

The month of November has been characterised on two fronts. TML and on AgorasLive. AgorasLive has gone through a lot of testing and benchmarking. Everyone has pitched in. Ohad, Umar, Juan have been doing a lot of testing. Tomas has implemented an importer from dpedia to TML so we can import tens of thousands real-life records and bring them into TML so queries can be executed against them. That’s been done successfully whilst he also continued to work on the TML editor. (https://tml.idni.org). Umar and Jaun, in particular, worked on another library called TPTP (Thousand Problems for Theorem Solvers) http://www.tptp.org. A very rich library of benchmark problems in Logic. Not a lot of them being relevant to us but we are working on the important parts. They’ve also kept working on testing the proof of extraction, finishing the debugging of that part. Murisi continued his very productive streak this month. Helping with testing and implementing three distinct algorithms. One for minimising and eliminating redundant rules. Another algo for transforming first order logic with TML into pure TML and the 3rd to transform unsequenced transformations into sequenced transformations. A lot of progress on the TML side. We want to emphasise even though we are working on Second-order logic and other research type features we’re focusing on testing in anticipation for a release soon. On the Agoras Live side we’re very close to wrapping up the first version. The first version Andre and Moaz put the finishing touches on the website. In particular Andre worked on implementing the strong data storage and symmetric encryption on the browser side that, in the future, that feature will be used to store users private key on the private side. This is all part of the payment system for Agoras Live which is not an easy thing to do right now. We are working on integrating with exchanges such as Whitebit and Bittrex. We’re having a lot of back and forth with them on the design and the workflow. We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for our users but the exchanges have security concerns of their own so there are trade offs we are having to make. Finally, Ohad, Fola and I are working on several strategic initiatives we perhaps will talk further about next month.

Murisi:

I’ve been working on a few algorithms this month. I’ve been working on a conjunctive containment algorithm and a conjunctive

The specifics were not important but it had to be the largest on Chinese soil in the 21st century. Political analysts criticized that the government was too hasty in its integration process.

“Does China interfere with the internal affairs of Britain?” Geng’s breath was back to steady and he sat down on the opposite end of the table. “No. Then neither should Britain with China’s. I’m warning you, Paddington, your actions are straining the relationship of our nations-”

“I’m not affiliated with the British government!” Paddington interrupted. “This is my own volition and everything I have done is driven by that and that alone. I don’t give a shit about politics so don’t waste your saliva on this matter anymore.”

“You. Will only speak. When asked to.”

Grande Vegas Casino Full Review

Grande Vegas is a safe and entertaining online casino which offers its customers a nice range of casino games, fast, reliable payouts, and excellent customer support. Powered solely by RealTime Gaming, it hosts some of the most exciting slots, video poker and table games from one of the most famous software developers.

The online casino offers both instant-play and downloadable versions, but it is also mobile compatible and available to just about any kind of portable device. One of its most remarkable features, however, is that, unlike the vast majority of online casinos, the site welcomes US players.

The web-based casino was launched in 2009, and today is one of the top online gambling destinations for North American players. It is available in English and French, while the only accepted currency is US dollars, which is an indication of the site’s focus on providing its services to the US market.

The country is quite an inhospitable place for gambling operators, yet the operator has apparently found a way to overcome the obstacles and bring US-based players the world-class gambling experience they deserve. The casino is owned by Tigress Management Ltd. and is licensed for conducting online gambling operations under the jurisdiction of the British Virgin Islands.

It is also one of the few web-based casinos which offer not only generous welcome bonuses but also holds various promotions in order to maximize the gaming experience of its most loyal customers. Moreover, the casino promises a special, “grande” bonus for American players, as well as a wonderful VIP Club available to all members.

The third adopted a method of rearranging in geometric patterns such that crossing ships would overlap and obscure those around
