Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO Success Story (not just hydrogen)

I wanted to share with you a bit of a success story. I have severe MCAS and recently developed extreme sulfur sensitivity. My GI doctor, Dr. Rahbar (love him!!), suspected that this was due to hydrogen sulfide SIBO before the Trio Smart Breath Test became available. This is the only test that measures all 3 gases: hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, and methane. I recently got my results back and my hydrogen sulfide result was 10.

I watched a video in which Dr. Siebecker says she often sees interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome in those with H2S SIBO. I kid you not, after treating for several days, my bladder pain had come down by 80%.

I have been mostly bed-bound for two years and I think SIBO has been a very important, missing puzzle piece. Since I am disabled and unable to work, I am a patient activist and make "edutainment" videos on bartonellosis, MCAS, and SIBO, when I feel well enough. In this video, I go over Dr. Pimentel's research on H2S SIBO, markers for H2S SIBO that may be outdated, and the clinical trial that I found that Dr. Pimentel is running that *may* make SIBO treatment more efficacious.

I make no money off of my channel nor do I give medical advice. I am just a sick person who does a whole lot of research in the hopes that other sick people do not have to suffer as much

No more hydrogen sulfide? Foods to reincorporate first?

My symptoms are not gone but all of my symptoms relating to hydrogen sulfide have gone away and I have been able to reincorporate meat and eggs and some spices like turmeric and cinnamon back into my diet without issue. I'm wondering what else should I reach for? should I try butter again? What about cheese or milk? Also if no should I also continue avoiding whey protein because I wanted to make a protein shake for myself to try and gain some weight back. I'll probably try ghee first.

I'll post a second discussion for what symptoms improved and how I did it.

MCAS Driven by Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO Was Slowly Killing Me

A few months ago, I developed an extreme sulfur sensitivity and had to stop eating all sulfur containing foods, including meat. I didn't know it at the time but this newly acquired sulfur intolerance was because of my MCAS being exacerbated immensely by hydrogen sulfide SIBO. This left me with a diet of literally five foods. A few weeks ago, I started to react to all of my safe foods, all of my safe medications, and water with burning nerve pain all over my body. It was terrifying.

I got my hydrogen sulfide results back from the Trio Smart Breath Test and decided that my heightened MCAS was due to the SIBO and started treating. I brought myself back off that very scary ledge and now can eat, drink, and take meds without burning nerve pain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfivP5PhFko

I made a video about this experience in case it is helpful to anyone. There are a few things that other people can learn from my story:

  1. SIBO exacerbated my MCAS to the point where I could not ingest anything without reacting. How many other MCAS patients has this happened to that never identified SIBO as the cause? How many of these patients have ended up on high-dose steroids, CDI (continuous diphenhydramine infusion), and/or TPN (total parenteral nutrition)?
  2. If you are reacting to sulfur-containing foods, you could consider pursuing the hydrogen sulfide SIBO breath test and proper treatment.
  3. MCAS researchers need to be open to the idea that chronic infections, such as SIBO and bartonellosis, can cause, or at the very least exacerbate, MCAS.
  4. Despite having multiple doctors, I have five, you are the one that spends 24/7 with you and even though your doctors may give you the puzzle pieces, you are the one who has to put the puzzle pieces together.

I am a patient activist and am disabled and do a whole bunch of research (I actually read the scientific literature) in the hopes that patients don't have to suffer as much in the future. I make no money off of my channel. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Question about Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)

Hi all. Iโ€™m not actually a home brewer myself but I would really appreciate an answer to this question as I am trying to get to the bottom of an issue I have had with my stomach for years (itโ€™s a relatively uncommon food intolerance - a sensitivity to sulfur).

Generally speaking, do stouts have less H2S in the brewing process than lagers or ciders? From what I can gather online, lagers seem to have higher amounts of H2S than stout, and ciders possibly have more H2S also?).

Thanks!

Neomycin seems kinda... Dangerous. Is it the only antibiotic for hydrogen sulfide?

Title sorta says it all, it not only gets your small intestine but also your large intestine. But I'm still wondering if I have H2S bacteria after I came off elemental diet. I read about treatments for h2s and the treatment is similar to methane bacteria so you'd need something that gets negative gram and positive gram. So that being said, is there other way? Would rifaximin work too?

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in IBD. Anecdotal insights and possible ways to reduce it

Hi there,

It's been a bit of a journey getting here for me but I thought I'd share some of my story and of some findings I have made about H2S and IBD along the way.

Ultra quick life story

I have had some kind of gut pain for 13 years, the doctors were never able to find anything wrong with me. 2 years ago I went into hospital and was given IV antibiotics for an infection. I survived the infection but when I got out diarrhea and IBS like symptoms plagued me. At first I was diagnosed with IBS but this turned out to be incorrect and in Feb 2021 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

During the 2 years of suffering I enrolled in a clinical trial for a drug called Blautix (thinking that I had IBS). This is a bacterial based treatment currently for IBS only. The Blautix bacteria metabolise (or eat up) hydrogen sulfide in the gut which is toxic and supposedly causes IBS symptoms. My experience on this drug was a near complete recovery along with the ability to eat any/all FODMAPs again. It was miraculous, and no side effects. The effect lasted for 6 months after completing the 2 months of dosing, before symptoms slowly returned.

Since the trial ended the data has been released for the Blautix phase 2 trial and it showed disappointing results in terms of IBS treatment. The data was not very significant despite a few people (including me) over on r/ibsresearch claiming similar miraculous recovery. It occurred to me that maybe that was because our illnesses was different to regular IBS. Press release here: https://www.4dpharmaplc.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/4d-pharma-announces-topline-results-blautix-phase-ii-trial-ibs

Since my UC diagnosis I have started to think about H2S and how it might impact UC and IBD and it turns out that H2S has been implicated as a toxic agent in IBD since the 90's. However there doesn't seem to any treatments that have gone down this route.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2090123220300564

Cutting to the chase

Reducing H2S in the gut may be an extremely effective treatment for IBD. We need to find ways of doing this, especially if there are symptoms remaining even after reaching remission through standard medication.

I found this paper recently from Monash university:

*Modulation of colonic hydrogen

Hydrogen VS hydrogen sulfide SIBO, how can you tell the difference?

Hey, google has been useless on this issue and it's been driving me nuts. I'm on the element diet, and just found out hydrogen sulfide is a thing, and now I'm concerned with how useful this diet is going to be.

So I tested positive for hydrogen dominant SIBO (and methane) but I have no idea if I have hydrogen sulfide bacteria or not. I had terrible smelling gas when I ate something wrong, but that seems to be the symptom for either types of SIBO.

I'm on day two of my elemental, and I feel slight pinches on the lower part of my stomach, hardly any farts, and an occasional tiny burp. Nothing seems too unordinary other than hunger, the bad taste, and being tired. Once in a while my stomach will gurgle or make noises but it doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

So how the hell do I tell if I have hydrogen sulfide problems or not?

Hi-Maize resistant starch (high-amylose maize) decreases faecal Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by 89%

I stumbled upon this paper today:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6287689/

I've been looking for a way to decrease H2S in the gut after a very impressive response to the Blautix clinical trial which works in a similar way (but different mechanism). Blautix bacteria metabolize H2S to remove the toxic effect on the gut. Resistant starch acts as a prebiotic and alters the gut microbiome in a way that produces less H2S overall.

Hi-maize is a fairly new food ingredient aimed at adding extra soluble fiber to the western diet. But it seems it may be useful in IBS/SIBO/IBD.

The paper also found that FOS (inulin) reduced H2S by an similarly impressive 82%, however FOS is a potent FODMAP for many people so it would probably not be suitable for our needs.

According to Monash university "Resistant starch is slowly fermented in the large intestine. It differs from FODMAPs due to this slow fermentation rate. FODMAPs are rapidly fermented and result in rapid increases in intestinal gas which, in IBS, can induce symptoms of pain, bloating and discomfort."https://www.monashfodmap.com/blog/dietary-fibre-series-resistant-starch/

Other types of resistant starch such as potato and green banana flour may also be useful, but we have no data on the H2S reducing properties of these as yet. At least not in a way described in the paper I linked above.

Sourcing Hi-Maize in the USA and Australia seems to be fairly easy, it comes in Hi-Maize 100 (pure form) and Hi-Maize 260 (50:50 maize mix). However its not really made it to the UK so much yet. I've contacted the UK branch of the company Ingredion, which seems to produce it worldwide. They do give out 500g samples on request so I'll try my luck and see what happens.

*15/02/21 update: Started on 1/2 a teaspoon once a day in the morning, mixed in with water or juice. This dose caused a lot of gas. I cut back to 1/4 -1/3 teaspoon and this is much more tolerable. I will continue like this until there is no reaction. The target dose is 1 full teaspoon x3 per day (with food).

*17/02/21 Read the paper through again and its not quite a simple as I thought. In order to make sure the resistant starch gets to the distal colon it needs to be taken with an 'insoluble non-starch polysaccharide' (insoluble fiber) such as wheat bran. Only problem is wheat bran is a FODMAP. However Soya, Rice

Hey! The title sorta says it all, but I started the elemental diet today, and despite some brain fog and some nausea (from the flavor and richness ๐Ÿคฎ), I'd say it's so far so good.

HOWEVER, I don't know if I have hydrogen sulfide bacteria in my gut. So I'm just now discovering that this could be an issue... So hopefully I don't have that much hydrogen sulfide bacteria but now I'm worried.

When websites say we can have "plain tea", what does that mean exactly? Just green tea? Black? It's so vague..

I was wondering if one could make an herbal tea? Infact, I was thinking of making an herbal tea with antimicrobial herbs like Neem. Even better, what if I made a tea out of herbs that kill hydrogen sulfide bacteria? Is that even okay?

I also read that lemongrass oil can help, are we allowed that?

Unfortunately my GI is mostly unfamiliar with the elemental diet so I'm mostly getting help on this with my dietician and here.

Thanks

Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO Protocol update

Hi guys :) Iโ€˜m two weeks in to my treatment

2000mg Bismuth (Brands Combination out of Devrom, Thorne Pepti Guard and Pepto Bismol)

34mg Zinc Acetate (Brand life extension)

300 mcg molybdenum (Brand Biotics, Mo-zyme)

Two pills of ADP oregano

Every second day NAC (carefull with that for H2S, but I experiment with it)

What I can say so far: I have strong food aversions, only fresh fruit sounds appealing to me. Aversion are mostly to protein rich foods and random stuff like avocado and coffee (the coffee aversion is the strongest) and no pregnancy is not possible

Bowel movements are black and smell very neutral because of the bismuth

My bowels slowed down a bit, thatโ€˜s good for me cause I tend to have diarrhea

Bloating is still there

Flatulence is still there too, but Iโ€˜m eating way more variety than before, even had a burger with garlic/onion powder.

Brain fog and fatigue are still there although Iโ€˜m calmer in my mood

I give an update two weeks later after Iโ€˜ve finished this round.

Probing the Intracellular Dynamics of Nitric Oxide and Hydrogen Sulfide Using an Activatable NIR II Fluorescence Reporter

Activatable NIR II probe: A dualโ€stimuli responsive probe was developed. This probe endowed the capability of reversibly switching the fluorescence from NIR II at 936โ€…nm to NIR at 645โ€…nm when successively treated with NO and H2S, enabling visualization of the dynamic and alternating existence of NO and H2S.

Abstract

Understanding the complex interplay among gasotransmitters is of great significance but remains technically challenging. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a dually responsive BODโ€NHโ€SC reporter for probing the dynamic and alternating existence of NO and H2S in living cells. This designed reporter can repeatedly cycle Sโ€nitrosation and transnitrosation reactions when successively treated with NO and H2S, thus affording the interchange of NIR fluorescence at 645โ€…nm (NO) and NIR II fluorescence at 936โ€…nm (H2S). In light of this unique fluorescence alternation between two colors, we synthesized waterโ€soluble BODโ€NHโ€SC dots to visualize the intracellular dynamics of NO and H2S. These molecular probes thus provide a toolbox to elucidate the interplaying roles of NO and H2S in the complex interaction networks of various signal transduction pathways.

I'm doing a new protocol next month, dosage per Day for 4 weeks:

  • 2000mg Bismuth reduces sulfur, and antibiofilm (Brands Combination out of Devrom, Thorne Pepti Guard and Pepto Bismol)
  • 34mg Zinc Acetate - reeduces sulfur (Brand life extension)
  • 300 mcg molybdenum (Brand Biotics, Mo-zyme)

Any tipps on what to add or what to be careful about?

I start in February and keep you guys updated every week :)

I think this is going to work because I already respond well to low dose bismuth.

I follow a balanced diet which avoids my main trigger food like onion, garlic, gluten, legumes etc. otherwise I eat as much variety as possible, 16:8 2-3 meals a day.

Positive for Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO - but feel best on carnivore?!

A bit of background: I have been struggling with โ€œIBSโ€ symptoms for over six years now. It crept up over time, starting as diarrhea and progressing to really severe bloating/abdominal distention. I found a lot of relief initially by limiting fiber/carbs and stuck to that strategy for a long time, but over time it seemed that I had to cut out more and more to find the same relief. Two years ago I went full carnivore and felt so relieved that most of my symptoms went away, but over time that has stopped working as well. I experienced one more big โ€œbreakthroughโ€ by starting to cut around the tough/connective tissue part of the meat, but eventually my symptoms returned regardless. Iโ€™ve gone back to eating some low-fiber veggies despite the discomfort. Nothing is really โ€œsafe,โ€ but steak is still the safest.

At this point, my main complaint is the bloating/abdominal distention that I get as a reaction to eating anything, although the degree of it is still much worse depending on the fiber/carbs I consume. My waist circumference can change up to 5 inches depending on the day. It takes several days of fasting/eating steak only to get any significant relief.

Iโ€™ve done tons of research and seen many alternative and mainstream doctors. I tested negative for hydrogen/methane SIBO a couple of times, but have done 2 courses of Xifaxan along the way anyway just to see if it would help (nope). Iโ€™ve also done several herbal protocols to see if they would help (also nope).

Iโ€™ve worked directly with Dr. Ruscio and done his full initial test panel for parasites and other things - all seemingly normal, which is very frustrating. I do like him, though.

Iโ€™ve done a 2-week homemade elemental diet, which didnโ€™t seem to help - and I still had symptoms throughout.

I even did a 2-week water fast out of desperation at one point, but didnโ€™t get any lasting benefits.

A few months ago I started seeing a new GI, and have finally made some interesting discoveries:

  • IBS-smart blood test was negative for post infectious IBS
  • A stool test showed that I had severe pancreatic insufficiency, so I started Creon digestive enzymes (havenโ€™t really experienced any relief from those yet, though)
  • I also started Motegrity/prucalopride 1mg at night (same thing)
  • Colonoscopy/endoscopy was normal
  • Abdominal CT scan was normal

Finally, I just did a trio-smart breath test which found normal hydrogen/methane, but elevated hydrogen sulfide! Could this be my big answer?!

Iโ€™m currently on a 2-

Hey guys, also does anyone know if hydrogen sulfide MUST be flatline?

Bassically I got 38 as my max for Hydrogen which is quite low. Yet my belching is litterally inhumane - constant. And reflux. And tummy pain. Many low fodmap foods dont sit with me yet some carps are actually okay. I struggle with high fat. Its all very sulfide looking but my Neuropath keeps saying it has to be flatline for Sulfide. I have had 2 rounds of antibiotics and did the elemental for 20 days (it just made me burp and gave me reflux) Anyone know if this is defenitely true about the flatline?

Im gonna change things up and try the low sulphur diet and see. Anyone recommended a protocol interms of supplements / anti microbials.

Hydrogen sulfide...low sulfur diet side effect?

Hi, I'm doing a low sulfur diet to get rid of SRBs, and I just eliminated all those protein things.

I eat things like rice, pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, zucchini, red bell pepper, and so on.

Unfortunately I sometime included some sulfite containing foods and my symptoms got worse, so I kept this diet for about 2 weeks until now. No protein at all, but just starches and some other veggies. (actually low FODMAP too, because it's mostly starches)

But now it seems weird, cause my symptoms(bloating, belching) are getting worse though I don't eat any suspicious food, but just those listed above.

I read Dr. Nigh's article that SRBs are actually produced for our body's sulfur need, so I'm wondering if I don't eat proteins at all, do SRBs get more produced for our body's minimum sulfur needs.

Any ideas or experiences?

I'm doing a project for helping quantifying health risks of a nearby landfill in my town. There's a lot of reliable PM2.5 and PM10 particle sensors and project ideas out there but I also want to measure H2S and info about sensors and project ideas is sparse.

I'm aware of the MQ-136 sensor but this sensor requires lab-like calibration using known H2S gas concentrations.

Another sensor I've found is the DGS-H2S sensor but there's not a whole lot information out there of the sensor reliability except this project which has doubtful results.

So, has anyone did a project with a H2S sensor that's reliable (fart-o-meters included)?

Hydrogen Sulfide cure?

First off here is a link to my results

SIBO Results

So I tested positive for Hydrogen, and Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO. Took Rifaximin (xifaxin) and it solidified my stools, and my lactose intolerance symptoms went away, but thats about it. A couple days after the antibiotic back to my old friend Pain, and Bloating.

To be honest I did deviate from the Low FODMAP quite a bit, but I was reading itโ€™s beneficial to NOT do the low fodmap diet?

Anyway, does anybody have a cure or have a better way of dealing with Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO?

Ultrafast Size Expansion and Turnโ€on Luminescence of Atomically Precise Silver Clusters by Hydrogen Sulfide

The formation of highโ€nuclearity silver(I) clusters remains elusive and their potential applications are still underdeveloped. Herein, we firstly prepared a chainโ€like thiolated Ag(I) complex {[Ag18(StBu)10(NO3)8(CH3CN)2(H2O)2]ยท[Ag18(StBu)10(NO3)8(CH3CN)6]}n (abbreviated as Ag18) in which two similar Ag18 clusters are assembled by NO3โ€ anions. The solution containing Ag18 reacted with hydrogen sulfide with controlled concentration, promptly producing another identifiable and bright redโ€emitting highโ€nuclearity silver(I) cluster, Ag62(S)13(StBu)32(NO3)4 (abbreviated as Ag62). We tracked the transformation using timeโ€dependent electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIโ€MS), UVโ€Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Based on this cluster transformation, we further developed an ultraโ€sensitive turnโ€on sensor detecting H2S gas with an ultrafast response time (30 s) at a low detection limit (0.13 ppm). This work opens a new way of understanding the growth of metal clusters and developing their luminescent sensing applications.

Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO, MCAS, and Sulfur Intolerance Was Slowly Killing Me

  2. If you are reacting to sulfur-containing foods, you should pursue the hydrogen sulfide SIBO breath test and proper treatment.

  3. MCAS researchers need to be open to the idea that chronic infections, such as SIBO and bartonellosis, can cause MCAS.

  4. Despite having multiple doctors, (I have five), you are the one that spends 24/7 with you and even though your doctors may give you the puzzle pieces, you are the one who has to put the puzzle pieces together.

I am a patient activist and am disabled and do a whole bunch of research in the hopes that patients don't have to suffer as much in the future. I make no money off of my channel. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Probing the Intracellular Dynamics of Nitric Oxide and Hydrogen Sulfide Using an Activatable NIR II Fluorescence Reporter

Understanding the complex interplay among gasotransmitters is of great significance but remains technically challenging. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a dually responsive BODโ€NHโ€SC reporter for probing the dynamic and alternating existence of NO and H 2 S in living cells. This designed reporter can repeatedly cycle Sโ€nitrosation and transnitrosation reactions when successively treated with NO and H 2 S, thus affording the interchange of NIR fluorescence at 645 nm (NO) and NIR II fluorescence at 936 nm (H 2 S). In light of this unique fluorescence alternation between two colors, we synthesized waterโ€soluble BODโ€NHโ€SC dots to visualize the intracellular dynamics of NO and H 2 S. These molecular probes thus provide a toolbox to elucidate the interplaying roles of NO and H 2 S in the complex interaction networks of various signal transduction pathways.
