Sex is absurd, sexual desire is painfully unavoidable and it can hinder your search for meaning

So this is more of an existential rant than a philosophical contemplation, but we have to start from the individual and his experience to grasp the dilemmas of human existence, right?

I think sex is ridiculously absurd most of the times. Outside of a relationship where it can be regarded as a form of bond with another human being in demonstrating affection, intimacy and empathy in the search for each other pleasure, sex is void and unnecessary; still we find ourselves trapped in the constant desire to stick one another genitals in our bodies and exchange bodily fluids while we have a peak of intense please for about 10 seconds and then... then nothing. Back to plain life.

What bothers me the most is that Western civilization is so obsessed about sex and pleasure in general that it leads many people to live an inauthentic life, exchanging an active search for meaning and plenitude for an ephimeral feeling of ectasy, comfort and escape from reality. (Viktor E. Frankl said "when a man cannot find meaning, he numbs himself with pleasure"). So, if you abstain from having sex, you are seen as inferior or defectuous, a loser, and even if you don't give a shit, you encounter sexual stimuli everywhere. It's impossible to escape the thought of sex when everyone is saying you should have lots of it and when it is around the corner enticing you even with cereal ads.

I'm not saying that having an active sexual life is going to make you some shallow alienated product of our sexualized society, but Jesus, I have suffered from watching porn for hours and evading my responsabilities, installing dating apps and hooking up relentlessly, looking for potential partners and discarding them just. because. we. don't. get. the. superior. chemical. rush. when. we. are. in. bed. (even if we understand each other and connect in an authentic way; if sex is bad, you are not a partner material. NEXT).

Life can get out of control; life can look miserable and dull and can be consumed by this one "condition of existence" that is utterly irrelevant outside the purpose of having children or connecting with a loved one. Sex fetishizes life to its most mundane and stupid elements most of the time and I'm sick of it, sick of still wanting it more and sick of having my will of power and my ability to build meaning shattered by this absurd, constant, never-ending urge.

I look forward to read your opinions on the matter.

EDIT: English is not my mother tongue, so excuse me for my re

Giving up alcohol because it hinders my concentration and learning

Whenever I drink, I lose my focus on the things I have learned. I forget about mindfulness, meditation and more. I end up staying up late and I regret it the next day. I'm going to give up alcohol because it causes me suffering. Although I am not an alcoholic, I don't wish to become one.

  1. I undertake [to observe] the rule of abstinence from intoxicants which cause a careless frame of mind.

Alcohol causes a careless frame of mind, and so I will undertake an abstinence from this. I am not a monk and do not need to abide by the Eight precepts, but this is important to me.

I had to ask myself, why am I drinking? My answer was: Because it makes me happy. Does it? No. It numbs emotions.

Do you drink alcohol, if so, why?

Does being a specialist with a gimmick character hinder my progress as a fighting game player?

I main Pac-Man, and, as such, I have invested quite a lot of time into learning the character, the properties of the hydrant water, all the launch angles possible, the different applications of the fruits, etc.

What I’m finding is that while I have all this specialized knowledge and technical skill, if I ever play random or something I feel like I’m basically a novice again. Pac-Man barely plays like a Smash character, it’s more like someone crammed the game Mousetrap into a fighting game. It’s fun but there are a lot of skills that simply aren’t transferable. Likewise, there’s a lot of stuff with other characters that I’ll never have to perform because I basically only play Pac. So, is this an issue? Like, is it worth it to invest time into playing other characters when my niche has been so thoroughly carved out for myself? Will investing time into other characters take me out of my Pac β€œzone”? I’m almost afraid to try lol

I like to think I’m pretty good at the game but I’m always looking to get better and find that edge, so I’m wondering if it’s necessary, you know? Thoughts?

EDIT: Wow, some really good takes in this comment section. I probably should clarify that I haven’t literally only played Pac, he just monopolized my time with the game because of his skill requirement. I actually started Ultimate as a Kirby main and I was a Jigglypuff main in every game prior to Ultimate. I understand most mechanics of the game fine, it’s just when those mechanics are packaged in a different way, I find that I’m not able to readily mentally transition. It seems like the general opinion is to maintain my main but experiment with other kits and styles not as a permanent change but as a supplement to my existing style and matchup knowledge, and I can vibe with that. Thanks everyone for the food for thought!

Is it possible to be too β€˜well-read’ on psychology and therapy that my T would be annoyed/feels that it hinders my progress?

For context I’m 18F and it’s my first time in therapy.

I’ve always been a pretty analytical person since I was young... and my T always describes me as someone with a keen interest in learning. I’ve always been interested in Psychology and ever since I started therapy, obviously I’ve taken a big interest in the topic as a whole. I read up on EMDR the moment I started it and so far, I’ve read The Body Keeps the Score and am currently reading Irvin D Yalom’s works. I’m also pretty well read up on the different modalities in therapy...

I know it’s good to put in effort in therapy and in understanding why I am the way I am (I do a lot of reflection and journaling which my T really likes). In my first few sessions I even used words like β€˜attachment’ and β€˜projection’ so my T immediately knew I read up a lot on it, probably more than the average client. She even mentioned I should consider majoring in Psych in uni. I also brought up as a casual convo that her office didn’t have a couch, and said that it’s interesting because I read that in traditional psychoanalysis (Freud) couches were always used.

My question is mostly directed to therapists who chance upon on this, but clients can feel free to comment as well: does it ever get to a point where β€œknowing too much” and being β€œtoo well read” can be a hindrance to me in therapy? Should I just sit back and let my T β€œdo her thing”?

People who haven't been inflicted by trauma, don't understand just how much it hinders your ability to be "normal."

I walk on eggshells, and pretend to be normal. Masking, has been my ultimate trick to surviving. That and dissociative disorders. Normal people don't have to "pretend" or put on a disguise for their family, but I do. I've had to every single day of my life. To keep the peace, to avoid attention, to prevent suicides.

When I look at food, I think of what a fat monster I am, because of the things that have been said to me.

When I put on something that shows my bra, I feel like a slut, because of a comment my mother made.

When I where shorts. I see my fat thighs, and think of the kid across the street that came up to me and exclaimed "YOU WEAR SHORT SHORTS?"

When I drive, I remember my brother saying "try not to get me killed this time" Or all of the times I've almost died in the car.

When I make a friend, I remember the dozens that have abandoned me and left me only with insults to remember them by.

When I look at a white pitbull I think of the one that I wasn't "allowed" to help, because doing so would tip the cops on that my brother was doing/selling drugs.

Every time I'm ignored I remember that nobody wants to see me, unless they need me.

Cigarettes make me think of my father.

Meat burning on a stove makes me think of my father.

Loud noises scare me. The smell of alcohol scares me. The sudden movements scare me.

Everything I do. Everything I think. Everything I see. It reminds me of what happened to me. It reminds me of how little people care about me, in all honesty.

I thought getting away from my father would fix it. But it hasn't. I'm the worst I've ever been. And every single day I awake to relived trauma.

This is my life, and I don't think I'm ever going to be free.

Unpopular opinion: Instagram and other online art platforms can really hinder your artistic abilities.

This is purely anecdotal and specific to my experience, but I have seen it happen with other friends and fellow artists so I just want to share my opinion! Instagram and other social media platforms can be an awesome way to share your art, get feedback, and engage with other artists. However, I feel like it comes with quite a few setbacks that people tend to overlook. I'll give my story as an example.

I've been an artist for as long as I can remember. I'm in my early twenties now, but up until I was about 13-14, I really pushed myself to become a better artist and enhance my skills in every way, trying to become the most well rounded artist I could. I discovered digital art when I was about 12 and haven't looked back since. Digital art is great and is a part of who I am today, including my studies/degree. However, when I was in late middle school/early high school, I fell down the rabbit hole of "Instagram art". I'm sure many of you are aware of the type of art I'm referring to, but if not I'll briefly explain-- the majority is digital art, slightly cartoonish/anime style, fanart, original characters/OCs, usually drawn in the same style and poses across the board. A lot of this art would be stylized portraits of beautiful girls from the head down to the shoulders. Of course there were plenty of exceptions, but this was the most common.

I remember absolutely loving this art style, and giving it a shot myself. My Instagram page quickly grew and I was getting a bit of recognition for my art. I realized that if I draw in this specific style, I was much more likely to get likes, follows, and comments-- being a young and impressionable person this obviously made me very excited to draw every day just so I could post more. I started participating in art trades with fellow artists, doing cheap commissions, contests, and just interacting with the community quite a lot. I ended up making a few good online friends and we would exchange art and comments with each other- it was a lot of fun for me and I thrived on the attention that my page was getting.

I was also drawing much more frequently than I ever had before. I did begin to improve my "art style" to match what some of the largest creators were putting out, but that's all I did-- emulate this one specific style. Eventually my art began to look so similar no matter what I tried, and I was starting to get the 'same face syndrome' that a lot of artists are familiar with. It became muscle memory and this st

Is it just me or are the MAT1322 proctoring rules so extra that it will hinder my exam writing? Did they get mad that too many people passed MAT1320?

Is it just me or are the MAT1322 proctoring rules so extra that it will hinder my exam writing?

Now the things they demand will make exam writing a headache because of all the extra things we need to do such as:

  • set up a second device with zoom from which they can see our workplace
  • scan and upload the cheat sheet as well
  • have a good wifi connection or you will be flagged
  • keep our hands and papers in our camera view at all times
  • no touching your laptop or it will be flagged

Man I get they need to prevent cheaters, but come on, all the extra things we have to do or even the things that may be out of control for some people really will make the process much more difficult than it should be

EDIT: it seems some people have not understood what I meant with my first point, what I meant was you need one more device with a camera to see your workplace, but the device to see the brightspace page or the PDF does not need a camera.

How is it possible the running shoe industry is as successful as it is when traditional running shoes actually hinder running instead of enhancing it?

It's almost insane. Not only does it cause the atrophying of the muscles and nerves of your feet but it encourages the worst possible running form and mechanics as well. Running shoes make running a chore whereas running barefoot, free from any hinderance, is actually fun.

It would be like if the swimwear industry started making a swimsuit that made you less streamlined and increased your drag in the water effectively hindering your stroke and every swimmer went out and bought one.

It's why I don't mind people to stop, stare and ask questions when I run barefoot - the more chances I get to open people's minds to this insanity and irrationality the better.

YSK, slicing bread while it is still warm will ruin the texture and hinder the flavor

Why YSK: Slicing the bread straight out of the oven, though tempting, is going to ruin your hard work. The rapid release of moisture interrupts a process called starch retrogradation, which is what gives bread it's texture. When the moisture isn't allowed to expell at its own pace the crumb can become doughy and stodgy to start, and drier later on. This resting period will also allow your bread to deepen in flavor development.

In short, practicing your patience will reward you in return, and if you absolutely can't wait to let it cool but you're dying for fresh bread try a batch of beer bread, which only needs about fifteen minutes of cooling.

S - B - M - M hinders variety, punishes progress, and breeds frustration

You have to take the most optimal routes, you have to use the most optimal setups, you have to use the most optimal configuration settings, you have to be on top of your shit every single match just to break even with a 1.0 and survive. I thought perhaps the shit would be toned down in this game given how many people absolutely despised MW because of it, but it seems that meant nothing.

It’s not about pubstomping, it’s not about dominating every match, it’s about being able to stray from the meta and play casually without feeling like you’re getting an iron rod rammed into your dickhole. It’s about consistently enjoying the fucking game. It gets real old having to give 110% because I’m good in a casual setting. I don’t understand what part of β€œSBMM doesn’t belong in pubs” Activision doesn’t seem to understand but it just ain’t it Chief. It just ain’t it.

Article from the independent.co.uk claims β€œTHINKING IN A SECOND LANGUAGE HINDERS IMAGINATION, STUDY FINDS”— thoughts?

Link to article: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/second-language-thinking-hinders-imagination-study-spanish-mandarin-english-a8206341.html?amp

Link to the actual study: http://www.sayurihayakawa.com/uploads/9/5/4/2/95429602/hayakawakeysar2018.pdf

Although the paper of the study mentions proficiency in the second language may play a role, the article from the independent.co.uk does not say anything about that.

From the study paper:

β€œThat said, there is some indication that proficiency may play a role. While we did not find notable proficiency effects for Experiments 2 and 3, in Experiment 1, we find that foreign language proficiency moderates the language effect on imagery for the auditory (B = βˆ’0.19, SE=0.09, p=.035) and motor modalities (B=βˆ’0.22, SE=0.08, p = .007). In these cases, the effect of language is most pronounced for lower proficiency participants. This raises the possibility that profi- ciency and other aspects of linguistic experience may affect how much people’s imagery changes as a function of language.”

Conceptually, does setting myself on fire as a martial artist help or hinder my abilities?

Hey guys! Still kinda new, still kinda learning. Martial arts builds are pretty cool right? Consistent damage, no heavy weapons to lug around, a good thing to learn if you can. What if we did all that, but on fire, would this do anything? Would i suddenly beat fire onto people? Has anyone tried this before, any help is appreciated.

Does anyone else find the inevitability of the sequels hinders their enjoyment of the Mandalorian? *SPOILERS*

I love the Mandalorian. Like, I fucking love it. But in the back of my mind I'm constantly thinking "yeah but no matter what happens Luke is going to think about killing his sleeping nephew, Leia is going to botch leading the new Republic and Han is going to walk out on his family."

Doesnt matter if Boba comes back on one of the most badass sequences in the entire franchise. Doesn't matter if we get to see Ashoka go up against Thrawn. Doesn't even matter if we get better explanations for "somehow... Palpatine returned."

It won't change that garbage trilogy. Doesn't matter how good the acting, characters, worlds or battles are.

All roads lead to The Force Awakens.

And it really hinders me fully enjoying an amazing peice of Star Wars material.

[Short story excerpt: Astorath]Not even the madness of the warp can hinder the Redeemer of the Lost in the execution of his duty.

The Eminence Sanguis appeared on no roll of service for the Blood Angels. It was not expected to take part in the Chapter’s battles and rarely did. It had been requested, built and commissioned solely as the personal transport of the High Chaplain, and had conveyed many holders of the office across the galaxy.Sepulchral halls linked sombre chambers. Every being upon that craft, whether unmodified human, tech-priest or Angel of Death, understood the solemnity of their mission and carried themselves with utmost dignity. The Eminence Sanguis was a near-silent ship, where robed figures went on solitary errands. Its machine-spirit was as cold as the void outside its plasteel skin and as distant as the stars it sailed for.It was a fast ship, quick in the void but swiftest in the warp. Although it was of low mass, in the realm of the warp concepts had more importance than physical truths, and the ship was heavy with duty. So singular was its purpose it cut easily through the conflicting currents of ideas that made the immaterium treacherous. Not even the madness of Chaos could deny the weight of Astorath’s work. Aided by the importance of its mission and the faith of those aboard, it passed through the worst of storms, and made impressive speed whatever etheric tempests curdled the Sea of Souls. In the nightmare of the warp, the Eminence Sanguis turned aside from its prior destination towards the source of the song.

It's a great example of narrative matters in the warp. And Astorath's narrative is a heavy one indeed.

Edit. The story's name is Redeemer, not Astorath.

What hinders most attempts at a permanent legacy character

I've heard people say most new legacy characters never stick because comic book fans would throw fit about it but I think its less to do with the comic fans themselves and more about the general audience/consumers.

Lets be honest at this point at least half of the worlds population knows batman as Bruce Wayne, superman as Clark Kent, Spider-Man as Peter Parker, wonder woman as Diana Prince etc. so in general when they show up to see The batman they know who their expecting/ who they've seen all their lives( this is a product of how goddamn popular most A-lister superhero's are now because of childhood shows etc.) so when you replace these characters it make it harder and less incentivized to read said comics because well if new people are going to start somewhere their going to start from where they know the most and already have the most interest in. Plus there's the fact that their alter egos are just as well know and popular as their hero personas and the core personality/beliefs they're most generally seen with Eg "With great power comes..." you get the idea, so if you try to permanently replace these characters with others that don't carry that ideological appeal you lose existing hardcore fans as well as potential new ones( lets be real most potential fans or even just people in general know these characters at a surface level already) but if you replace them with what essential amounts to a carbon copy then a lot of people hold on to their attachment to the origin and ask "what was the point if they are just the same".

Sometimes when they actually did replace these characters for more long term stretches of time what ended up happening was the legacy character held on for a few years or even a decade before unceremoniously getting kicked to the curb when their predecessor comes back( the worst example of this being wally west as the flash) to either just simply return as they were or take some of their developed stories and lore as well as a bit of their personality traits and fold it into their own. You might say "Well they have successfully replaced other hero's permanently with legacy characters before" (green lantern, blue beetle, captain marvel, the flash etc.) but generally this has to do more with on how old they were to begin with and how often they were replaced(eg green lantern in the silver age), how often they were replaced(captain marvel & green lantern), whether, not there was an in universe reason for multiple people to have t

Lack of visual customization on gear in Vahalla hinders the game

As per title. I loved the visual customization in Odyssey. That I could swap from rags, to gladiator, to Spartan, to mercenary, or a blend of the whole lot was great. That my gears' appearance wasn't tied to the item I was wearing. I could make Alexios and Kassandra look how I wanted to, easily. By the 20th hour into the game, I had a few dozen pieces to change my aesthetic, from weapons to gear.

Vahalla doesn't have that. The items look great, but I'm 12 hours into the game and my Eivor has barely changed. There is no silhouette difference because I've been stick to the Raven Gear. I can't even change the 'cosmetic' side of it, whilst maintaining the bonus.

This makes me unenthusiastic about exploring and finding new treasures to hunt appearances, other than XP. I'm hoping there will be an update down the road that changes this.
