Harvard Admissions Handbook

I recently read through the court ruling of SFFA v Harvard, and in those proceedings Harvard releases 40 years of admission data, racial breakdown across every category, as well as the step by step process and scoring rubric they use and how likely you are to get in given your score. The actual court ruling is 130 pages so being a data guy, I wrote up the important bits, aggregated stats, and added some plots. Hope it's useful to some of you out there.

http://blog.jonathanpchen.com/2020-12-05/harvard/

Free license to reuse or share, but please consider citing the blogpost if you do.

[Edit] Since it is a lawsuit, there are a lot of statistics and data analysis of race. I merely quote the numbers and analysis because I believe more data is better, but I make no statements on the issue.

Reprimanded for compliance with the Student Handbook... I guess I'll just need to comply harder!

I am not sure if this really fits well with malicious compliance material; however, my compliance almost certainly cost my instructor their job.

So, I was taking a class for my second master’s degree. It was a hybrid in-class and online course in which we where required to communicate an original thought on the topic and respond to 3 other students posts. These discussions were always different from week to week and I worked hard to contribute original ideas for discussion and carefully cite my sources.

On week 3ish though I noticed something odd. Several students’ posts were not merely identical to each other, but they were literal copy/paste jobs from an article that I read. At this point I was suspicious, so I started Googling the first line from every other student post and lo and behold, roughly 75% of the class was simply copying and pasting from articles they found and citing nothing. No quotation marks or even a link to show where they got it. It was blatant plagiarism.

Now every student who had bothered to read the handbook should know that it is an ethical violation to not report plagiarism when you encounter it. Here my compliance begins. I documented my findings and alerted the instructor. At that point I did not expect much more than a β€˜thanks, I’ll look into it,’ but if that were where it ended, I would not be sharing this here.

His response floored me. He wrote back this sternly worded email warning me that β€œother students’ grades are not your business.” Indeed, other students’ grades were not only none of my business, but I never mentioned that.
I did not really understand how he jumped from β€˜plagiarism’ to β€˜other students’ grades.’ I strongly suspected that he knew that I had caught him with his pants down and he simply tried to intimidate me into keeping quiet.

Because this was such a slap in the face to the hard work I put in, I decided that I needed to comply with the handbook some more.

I whipped out my wallet and retrieved the business card of the section head. Thankfully, the section head took it seriously and passed the issue up to the Dean of the Department. The Dean contacted me not long after to confirm my findings with me as well as the instructor’s inappropriate reply.

The next class I mentioned the issue. The instructor claimed that he gave everyone permission to just copy and paste articles in the chat on the one day that I was not able to attend. I know when I am being bullshitted.

As I am sure t

I'm a beginner and I'm interested in playing as a Warlock, but I don't know anything about specific patrons. Should I? They are not described in my Player's Handbook

Hey, I'm a very beginner, never played a single match, still going through the Player's Handbook. But I'm interested in playing as a Warlock. My boyfriend will be DM, but he is a beginner too, although he has already played a couple of times but he's still a bit inexperienced.

My question is, I was thinking of having one of the patrons mentioned in the PHB, but I don't know much about them, they are just mentioned. Should I know more? I googled Titania of the Summer Court and there seems to be a whole lore behind her. I guess if I choose that one I'd have to learn that, but officially where can I do that? Does my boyfriend that will be DM need to know about her too? Reading some specific source?

I'm a bit confused because the PHB mentions a couple of possible patrons as examples, but are there more that I should be aware of? Or Am I supposed to create my own patron? But if that's the case I guess I'd have to inform my boyfriend (DM) about everything I imagined of said patron. In that case, wouldn't I be kind of spoiled about some things concerning the patron, because I assume my character would be a bit ignorant about some thoughts and plans of my patron, or not?

Sorry, I'm still pretty ignorant, my main confusing as you may see is specially about the roleplaying part, not so much about the mechanics (I think).

Perhaps a Warlock isn't an ideal class for us considering I have never played and my boyfriend is still kinda inexperienced, would you recommend to go with it or choose a simpler class?

I just found out about "Machinery's Handbook"

I graduated in 2019, and I have been working since then. I keeped hearing my boss reference the "Machinist's handbook" and I assumed it was a book with a bunch of tables about surface finishes, welding, thread, and gear dimensions ect. I had some down time and decided to scroll through a pdf of it to see if it was useful. OH MY GOODNESS I WISH I HAD THIS BOOK DURING ALL OF COLLEGE! It is very dense but it has SO much good information. A clean summary of almost every math class I took, statics, dynamics, mechanics, fluids, statics. Of course I don't know how easy it would have been to learn anything for the first time from it, but as a reference to check back and remember something it is amazing. The title is so misleading. It should be called "The Mechanical Bible!"

Thanks to donors we were able to give away 55 D&D 5e Player's Handbooks and 100 sets of dice to lfg users unable to afford them this month. I am awed by the generosity of our donors and glad to welcome so many new users to our ranks. Although on hold for now, there will be future giveaways.

A special thanks to our donors: /u/Baronsalty, /u/C0ld_H4ndz, /u/cerealsucks, /u/Constructing_Whale, /u/Crowxll, /u/Dam_uel, /u/EmeranceLN23, /u/Enventions, /u/Gomaironin, /u/hawaiihatch, /u/ImperialArmorBrigade, /u/inkhonclusive, /u/Ironcoat, /u/Lord_of_knitting, /u/Marco9711, /u/NoTimeToExplainFxxk, /u/RolloThePig, /u/sscherb, /u/SirJohnOfPancake, /u/skauing, /u/TropiDana, /u/twobulletscollide and two donors who remain anonymous. Without them this would have hardly been such an event. Thank you all. To anyone reading, they've all been given the "LFG Certified Amazing" flair so if you see them around, they're the kind of person you want in your group.

A second special thanks to my mom who, in early days of the giveaway before it became clear purchasing dice bags was required, sewed 40 dice bags herself for this event.

A third special thanks to the donor who sent their PHB direct and included Curse of Strahd and a heap of other books and materials.

A fourth thanks to family and friends who probably won't see this: Amazon limits how many books one can buy (it's a loss leader) and with their help I was able to get all of these quickly.

To anyone wondering how the donors knew their money was going where it was supposed to: I have been keeping and sharing with donors the receipts for every dime coming in and going out every step of the way (with personally identifiable information redacted).

To anyone wanting to donate, message me or comment here and I'll write down your name for future giveaways. Requests were coming in a bit slow by the end so I'm waiting a while.

For those wondering, we spent $1,709.21, or $33.51 per shipment (four of the fifty five were sent directly from donors and were not calculated in that number). That covers, per shipment, a PHB, two dice bags, two sets of dice, the box, tape, sharpies for labels, and shipping costs. Before I knew how big this would get, dice were purchased in smaller, less cost-efficient quantities. Next time will be even more efficient :)

Thank you again donors. Recipients, welcome to the fold!

Edit: added "shipping costs" to the list of expenses. Added a fourth thanks.

If you literally can't afford a 5e Player's Handbook, I want to give you one. With the help of donors I have given away fourteen already and still have more.

Closed but keep an eye out for future giveaways!

If you are going to request a book, please read the whole post.

I want to get out ahead of this and say something important: The majority of requestors that didn't get a book didn't get one because their request didn't meet the requirements in the post and they didn't change their request to meet those requirements when asked.

If you can't afford a book, actually can't afford it, please let me know here. I'll send you one and, if you like, I'll highlight your search for a party (see the bottom of the post). The requirements to receive a PHB:

  • Actually be unable to afford it. It's $23. If your copy is ratty or you'd rather not spend the dough or you're a little short this month, this isn't for you. If you can afford it and ask for one anyway, you need more help than a $23 book. Some people literally can't. You don't have to tell me why you can't afford it. I believe you. I'm not asking you to turn your misfortune into performance for luxury alms. If you choose to share that's fine but sharing those details will have no impact on if you get a book.

  • Be a past, present, or future user of /r/lfg. I would love to help everyone but I've got the privilege of moderating this subreddit. This is where many requests have fallen short. To demonstrate your participation, either write up an lfg post here (What will you bring to a table and what are you looking for?) or tell me about your experiences on lfg.

  • US only (for reasons of shipping cost) - Hawaii and Alaska included.

  • If chosen, be willing to provide a mailing address.

Just a heads up: while media shipping rates are inexpensive, they are also slow.

We're running low on books. It isn't first come first serve. As long as this is up, there's a chance you could get one. If you made a request before and didn't get an offer for a book, you're not any kind of disqualified.

A lot of suggestion have been made publicly and privately about better ways to do this: I appreciate your intentions to be helpful but I am fine with this, thank you. Unsolicited advice will be removed.

If you want to give a new user a safe, supportive, and fun place to start their D&D journey, look no further than these users:

Hollywood Handbook and Chef Kevin announced they’re leaving Earwolf in January on this week’s HH

Joining the recent slew of shows leaving earwolf. They discuss I right at the beginning of this week’s HH. As reported on the show (and clarified by Kevin in the episode’s thread), Pro Version and Masterclass will be part of the TFO patreon from now on. Regular HH will keep being free wherever podcasts are found.

There’s already some discussion of this in the episode discussion but I figured the news deserved its own thread.

I wonder why so many shows are leaving earwolf lately. Something going on behind the scenes? Just a shift in how the podcasting world is functioning? Do you guys think earwolf will survive?

Edit: seems like it’s to do w Sirius buying earwolf, but as a nosy little podcast fan I’m still very curious of what’s really going on

I’m a salaried employee and my wages are being deducted due to an issue with our clocking software out of our control. Nothing in contract or handbook mentioning deduction of wages outside of the GOV.uk information. Is this illegal?

Edit: England

Hi LAUK, I’m after some info and advice as to the legalities of deducting wages because our clocking system tracks by the second even though we can’t see the seconds we clocked in/out at, only hours and minutes. On our daily clocks it also says I’ve done 8 hours (8am - 4pm, total 7.5hrs minus our unpaid lunch), but when our monthly reports are sent out some days show 7:29, not 7:30, hrs worked even though my clock in is 08:00 and out 16:00 - this is because the software tracks by the second, which we cannot see. The individual day says β€œtotal time 08:00 hours” too... On top of this, my timesheet technically does not match up either, because of these missing seconds.

They can’t adjust our times easily so have said they won’t and that it’s on us to make sure our timings are correct, otherwise we shall continue to have this time deducted from my (so our) wages; they round up or down per quarter of an hour too, so if I’m down 1 minute according to the software, I lose 15 minutes pay.

My contract and employee handbook don’t mention anything about this kind of thing or reasoning for deducting wages, nor does the advice on GOV.uk say it’s okay to do what they’re doing. I know I’m not losing out on much per month, but that’s besides the point.

I’d just like to know if this is actually legal?

Going forward I’m going to make sure my clock is over a couple of minutes every day to make this a non-issue, I’d just like to be more informed as my manager (after discussing this with him) has said he’s fairly sure what they’re doing isn’t legal.

Thanks for your time in advance.

This is made possible thanks to contributions by so many of our users. If you see them around (they have the Certified LFG Amazing user flair), tell them you appreciate them!

To users wishing to donate: Let me know and I'll write down your name to contact later but I am halting donations at this time until I've handled what we have now. I can't express enough times or hard enough how overwhelmed I am by this community's generosity.

🚨︎ report
If you literally can't afford a 5e Player's Handbook, I want to give you one. With the help of donors we still have more to give.

This was US-only but a user who wishes to stay anonymous in India has offered to help by shipping some books in Asia/Europe! There will only be a few able to sent so I'm going to wait a bit on such requests so I can sort through them a bit but the door is open for such requests!

If you are going to request a book, please read the whole "Giveaway Info" section. The majority of requestors that didn't get a book didn't get one because their request didn't meet the requirements detailed within.

I keep reposting because every repost gets more visibility, which gets more people books. If this post is stickied to the top of the subreddit then I still have books to give out.

Giveaway Info

  • Be a past, present, or future user of r/lfg.

New user and donor LFG posts

These recipients of books and donors have chosen to have their LFG searches highlighted here. If you want to support new users or find a player with a heart of gold, look no further than here:

I know this is the fifth post but every time I post, more people get helped!

If you are going to request a book, please read the whole "Giveaway Info" section. If you would like to donate, please skip to the bottom section regarding participation
