So I may be late to the party on this, but I only just found out and I figured I’d let others know so they don’t drive all the way out to the area just to be met with the same disappointment that I was yesterday.
Apparently CA DFW has decided to eradicate the trout from a number of lakes near Grouse Ridge, to include glacier lake, and the five lakes basin. They’ve deployed gill nets to the lake, ostensibly to create spawning habitat for native yellow leg frogs in the area.
Why they decided to pick Glacier, literally the only lake in the area that held golden trout, I have no idea...
There are still some lakes they haven’t touched, to include Carr, Culbertson, Feeley, Long, Milk, Lindsey, and Island.
I've seen that you need a high clearance vehicle to drive to the trail head. Would a RAV4 be able to make it? Any other useful tips for this trail? Thanks!
I'm planning on taking my kids to Grouse Ridge next week for some backpacking. From what I've researched so far, it seems like any route you take within Grouse Ridge will afford great views, camping near a lake, and swimming. (All things they hope to have on trips!)
Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of the area? My youngest is 4 and has hiked up to 6.3 miles in one day. I was planning on hiking out of Carr Lake and heading towards Penner.
