Grit is a personality trait possessed by individuals who demonstrate passion and perseverance toward a goal despite being confronted by significant obstacles and distractions. Those who possess grit are able to self-regulate and postpone their need for positive reinforcement while working diligently on a task.

WTB ? This book is definitely tech related. I was listening to the audiobook version on YouTube. It had some statistics about how people are more people are posting unpleasant photos of their friends. How American values are identified by grit, change and something on that line.

This might be a very popular book. The book tried to define how American culture is being changed in a new society. They identified the grit, movability (and another one I forgot) as core american values.

How people are now more proud of themselves then they were earlier. How people now boast off and take pride more in what they do. Also tried to identify the reasons why more people post unpleasant or embarrassing photos of their friends in social media.

I have turned off my YT watch history so forgot the book.

Can anyone identify the book from the description?

Shall we start a community buying guide for those who are new into pencils?

I can start a basic draft here by price range and basic descriptions. Feel free to add on folks in the comments, and mods you can edit/re-compile this post if you like and make one complete solid community buying guide for r/pencils to put in the side bars when all the community inputs have been gathered <3

<> Pen+Gear: Made in India (a must), available at your local Walmart. Reskinned Hindustan Pencils, community review here, probably the best quality/price ratio you can find in ANY pencil. $1 for 20 count.

<> Dixon Ticonderoga: "For kids schooled in the US, this is probably the prototypical "yellow #2 pencil". The original, US made Tic was somewhat famous for its dependable quality and value. The modern version is made in either Mexico or China. Much has been discussed online about the quality of the current incarnation but it seems to be a consensus that the Chinese made Tics are better than the Mexican ones, both in terms of the quality of the cores and the overall fit and finish. A very serviceable onboard eraser and the trademark green and yellow banded ferrule are hallmarks of this standby pencil. Buy in person if you want to be sure to get Chinese ones, and/or to check for centered cores, and to see if they are cedar or basswood, if you care. Also note that due to the popularity of these for school use, "back to school" branded packages appear in some retailers in the late summer before school starts and these have been reported to be of inferior quality. ~$2-3 USD/dozen (Amazon 7/2020)"

Dixon Ticonderogas are wild. Especially in the beginning when they moved manufacturing overseas to Mexico/China quality/characteristics would vary considerably. Flash forward to 2020, I believe it is safe to say that China, cedar, yellow Ticonderogas are a different pencil than China, basswood, black Ticonderogas. Yellow cedar Chinese tics tend to be darker and softer, almost like a 2B pencil, while black Ticonderogas tend to be a more true HB pencil that is firmer and have a chalky characteristic to the writing experience. I have both and use both for different purposes/moods, and both are nice. But I thought it'd be important to highlight this difference, and that the yellow/black Ticonderogas' difference is not just a paint job. One thing to note is that T

A good short western

Hi all! I'm looking for a good suggestion on a short and sweet western. I've recently read The Revenant (not sure if this is really a western) and loved it and I just finished True Grit (definitely a western) and loved that as well! I'm looking for something easy to read and short, but not cheesy or cliche really. I have heard how amazing Lonesome Dove is and I want to read it but with a 1.5 year old and a baby due in April it's not really something I can dive into right now. I have been reading books on my phone recently just because it's so much easier to get reading in that way because I always have my phone with me! So something that I can buy as a kindle book is helpful too. I've read No Country for Old Men and I thought it was great but I'm not really into Mccarthy otherwise. I've tried Blood Meridian a few times and honestly I really don't like it at all. Just an FYI. Thank you for any suggestions!

Take it from an American fan: Miami shows that F1 is misunderstanding America

The first two venues for the United States Grand Prix, Sebring International Raceway in Florida and Riverside International Raceway in California, each featured only once on the calendar. Their promoter, Alec Ulmann, abandoned the projects after realizing they were financially unviable. In 1961, Watkins Glen became the third venue in as many years to host Formula One. It soon established itself as the sportโ€™s American home until the mid-1970s, when Formula One began courting a second race stateside. In 1976, on the picturesque shores of Long Beach, California, the United States Grand Prix West was born, and as Ferrariโ€™s Clay Regazzoni roared down Shoreline Drive on his way to a crushing victory, the writing was already on the wall for Watkins Glen. Formula One reveled in Southern Californiaโ€™s sunny climate year after year, deeming the Long Beach race a new Monaco of sorts, while Watkins Glen deteriorated and fell into debt before vanishing from the calendar ahead of the 1981 season, its demise a symbol of shifting priorities within motorsport.

Long Beach itself only kept its place until 1983, when race promoters deemed that the financial strain of the event overshadowed its perceived commercial benefits. Formula One, meanwhile, staged street races in Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas, and Phoenix over the next decade. None of them hosted the sport for more than seven years; some linger in the memory as abject failures representative of misguided ambition, of a desire to do too much with too little. Dallas and Phoenix saw sweltering temperatures and poor attendance, Detroitโ€™s fragile track surface inflicted many mechanical problems, and Las Vegas could never shake the embarrassment of being held in the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel. In 1992, just a decade after it became the first country to host three world championship races in the same year, the U.S.

(OC) I Used Math To Rank All 2,053 Teams In NFL History By How Badass They Are

First off, I'd like to begin by saying that I'm fine. Things are fine in my personal life. I spend appropriate amounts of time with friends and family, love to travel, enjoy meaningful employment and am an engaged citizen.

Now, that said, over the last few years I have been compiling and organizing a database of every individual season by a team that is currently available on ProFootballReference. I have then used this database to calculate Z-Scores for each individual stat for each individual team. Which is fine, Warren Buffett plays the ukulele, Aaron Rodgers makes his own soap and Sylvia Plath liked to bake. Everybody has their hobbies.

Here's the spreadsheet I'll be referencing in this post, which includes the complete ranking of all 2,053 individual team seasons, if you're interested.

What is Z-Score? Who cares. Most of you are probably barely skimming over this or skipping to the findings.

If you do care, head down to the Methodology section at the bottom of this post and you can tell me about all the ways in which this has been an extremely flawed undertaking.

For our purposes all you need to know is that, using Z-Score, I have devised a way to compare across different eras of the sport by comparing the raw numbers of a given stat (adjusted to per game averages to account for the differences in games played per season) to a given team's peers within their own era. So, for example, a team from 1973 rushing for 2000 yards as a team will have a lower score in "total rushing yards" than a team from 2015 rushing for 2000 yards because the average rushing totals from 1971-1975 are higher than 2013-2017, and it will take a higher mark from the 1973 team to overcome that handicap. And vice versa, if we are talking about passing yards or something like that.

A higher Z-score is better (except for in the case of Protection Score, because allowing sacks is not badass). a score of "0" is totally average. A score of "1" is very good. A score of "2" means they were one of the best performers in a given stat over a five year range if not the decade. A score of "3" means they are a historically significant outlier, and anything higher than that is utter ridiculousness.

I'm probably gonna be doing a lot of fun stuff with this database over the next few months, but I figured what more fun way to introduce you all to this index than something that seeks to

How I became a software developer after prison

Im formerly incarcerated and programming saved me by giving me a career I probably couldn't have in any other industry. I had no real prior experience and no formal education. I eventually attained the experience (and some education in an AS degree) but it was inconsequential. I tried everything but it all came down to two things. I had to code enough to get the skills and I needed to develop a network that would vouch for me. Its almost too simple to believe, but I just programed and met people. I tried to follow trusted quality learning sources (like Stanford online, Ray Wenderlich, Big Nerd Ranch, Sean Allen videos...all iOS but you get the idea) and write programs over and over. And I made friends with developers at meetups and through online interaction. These friends led to job interviews where I could show that I had skills.

To sum it up, to get into the industry focus on two things, your skills and your network. Thats it.

First thing is obvious, code. Hands on keyboard over googling for a year before you ever get started. Build things through tutorials, then switch things in the tutorials, then build your own thing. Practice problem solving with things like leet code to build problem solving and interview skills. Hands on the keyboard and code. Develop your skills!

Secondly build your network. Start now. Get around developers. Put yourself in a place where you'll interact with working developers. And dont join 99 communities where you cant meaningfully interact. Join however many that you can actually engage consistently and develop relationships.

Thats it. It definitely takes a serious commitment and grit, but if you consistently pursue those two things, skills and a network, youll get an opportunity.

If any of you come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds or are formerly incarcerated and would like extra support check out On twitter we are @ UnderdogDevs. Its a passion project turned non-profit my friends and I started to help people from similar backgrounds get into tech. Its free and offers a ton of support from software engineers from all over the industry. We also have a program called project underdog where we pay your bills for 3-4 months and super charge your learning with pair programing sessions every single day from Monday - Friday for an hour. You'll be guided through our in-house problem set bank by experienced mentors allowing for real time feedback. Overall the community is amazi

OPโ€™s autistic girlfriend has to step out of the new Doctor Strange movie and now feels terrible about it

i am NOT the original poster! the original post is from r/relationship_advice. this is a REPOST

Mood: >!so wholesome your heart will explode!<

I (24m) am a huge Marvel fan and Iโ€™ve been looking forward to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for months and I have been hyped for it. My girlfriend (24) is autistic and has some sensory issues, but she told me even though she doesnโ€™t have much interest in Marvel she wanted to see it with me because she knew how important it was to me and she wanted to share the experience. She goes to the movies on weekdays during the day when no one is there and does ok with that, so she thought weโ€™d be ok with a 3pm showing on a Thursday.

However, I donโ€™t think she realized just how packed it would be and that right off the bat was a bad sign for her. Then without any spoilers, there was a part where everyone started cheering and yelling, and I saw she was starting to get overstimulated (she started to lean over with a death grip on her ears and her eyes were squeezed shut and she was gritting her teeth) so I immediately got her out of there and we went to my car and got her overstimulation kit out of her bag and turned on her music. Fortunately, she was able to calm down and avert a meltdown.

When we got home, she felt HORRIBLE and started crying. She said she was โ€œthe worst girlfriend in the worldโ€ and โ€œdidnโ€™t deserve any love at allโ€ and she โ€œruined it like she ruins everythingโ€ and she repeatedly told me how sorry she was that I had to leave the movie. I told her she was the most wonderful girlfriend in the world and that I was not mad at her in any way and it was absolutely not her fault we had to leave, but then she told me that if I had just gone without her it wouldnโ€™t have happened. I kept telling her that she was much more important to me than the movie and I wasnโ€™t mad at her or blamed her, but she wouldnโ€™t accept any of it and just continued to insist it was all her fault.

Since then, sheโ€™s kinda isolated herself and has shut me out a bit and hasnโ€™t talked to me a whole lot. It seems she feels so ashamed and guilty for what happened even though I did my best to make it clear to her how okay it really is and how Iโ€™m not mad.

Retreat, Hell - Episode 19

A/N: Here it is at last! At 7575 words, this is one of the shortest chapters in a long time (might only need to continue in a single comment on HFY), but there's a lot that happens. The elven counter-offensive is really starting to kick off, and the war is going to start exacting its toll. A lot of character development squeezed into this one, too.

As we continue through the war, there will probably be a number of other, relatively short episodes covering single engagements or battles and the immediate events surrounding them. There will still be plenty of long chapters, but not all will be making a run at 20k words. Episode 20 will probably be of comparable length, though big things will be happening in Episode 21.

More half-episodes are coming, as well. Episode 20.5 will take us back to Tyriel and his misadventures, and Episode 19.5 will be taking a glimpse at some SOF operators in a very different theater of the war.

We also have some fanart! Radius55 commissioned this image from The Battle of the Floof from!

Now that I have a much lighter workload and easier schedule, I'm looking to commission more art for R,H, myself. I'm shopping around for artists, right now, but if anyone has any recommendations, I'm all ears.

Old Wounds

There wasnโ€™t much ceremony for the new Coldwater. At least, there didnโ€™t appear to be much from the outside.

Men set about their tasks, cutting wood, setting posts, laying stone that their dwarven allies grudgingly supplied them with. There had been some grumbles about accepting charity from a people that looked down on them so transparently, but Hallenbecker quashed that from the start.

โ€œThis is payment, lads. Lord Aerson said we brought down a mountain, so a mountain is what weโ€™re getting. Unless you want to make our new home from Titan bits?โ€

That had quieted them down, though a couple pikemen had gotten sparkly eyes at the idea. Well, if they wanted to cut a block of giant corpse, carry it up the mountain on their backs, then deal with elvish curse that was almost certainly laid on it, they were welcome to.

As long as they took it far away from him. His house was going to be solid oak and non-possessed granite, thank you very much.

The new Coldwater was developing nicely, growing like a weed along the sides of the thin valley Senarus had set aside for his human retainers. The natural depression spread out as it lowered, gradually leading into the plain that ran up to the mountain.

Hallenbecker liked that plain. Every time winds blew in from the west, it smelled like home. Then he turned around and saw the mountain they were building up against.

One of the messengers had tried to tell him the name of it in runic, but dwarven names for their homes were complicated. His knowledge was limited mostly to curses, orders, and the thin ligaments of language needed to tie them together.

Ringfinger. It was an odd name for a mountain, but he supposed he was missing a lot of cultural nuance. As he wondered, he turned an attentive eye to the other mountains in the range. If you squintedโ€ฆ and turned your headโ€ฆ

Nope. Still just looked like a bunch of mountains.

Oberson, of course, managed to ride up at this exact moment. The man had a gift for catching Hallenbecker in decidedly unimposing poses.

He leaned his grin into a hand, copying the captain. โ€œChecking if the worldโ€™s still rightside up, sir?โ€

Hallenbecker gave him a sideways glare, before looking out over the range and saying nothing at all. The trick to this particular game was acting nonchalant.

He took his tim

Why I never got married, by Lucy Jane Collins.

Hello all. My name is Lucy and please forgive any errors on my part. I'm 84 years old and this is new to me. I'm not completely past it though, I'm on the facebook and I can do emails. My granddaughter, Violet, set this up for me because she said I have to tell my story.

My partner of over 50 years, David, recently passed away rest his soul. He was a wonderful human. Violet has been spending a lot of time with me, bless her. She asked me about my life before I met her grandpa, who I never married, and I told her what I'm about to tell you.

Please keep in mind that this was 1955. Though a lot of the details are with me like they happened yesterday, exact conversations from over 60 years ago are difficult to remember as you can imagine. I will do my very best to keep it as accurate as possible, though please take the verbal exchanges with a pinch of salt.

I was 18 years old and riding passenger side in my beau's cherry-red convertible. You probably won't believe me, but his name was James Dean! Honestly! No, he wasn't the James Dean, but just as handsome. The wind was in my hair. Back then it was raven black, now it's snow white. That's life. We were far away from our small town, I couldn't recall ever driving that way before.

"Where are we going, JD?" I asked, unfamiliar with my surroundings. We had been driving for a while by that point. I loved the way he drove so recklessly. There was a hint of danger in him which drove me wild. My parents disapproved of him and that made me want him more! That's youth for you, I guess.

He grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips, planting a kiss. His emerald green eyes looked away from the road to look into my baby blues. His slicked back dirty blonde hair barely moved from excess pomade, it's how the boys wore it back then.

"There's a rad spot perfect for my baby girl."

I giggled and screamed as he accelerated, hurtling around a sharp bend, rubber screeching on the asphalt. I smiled breathlessly as I gazed over my sweetheart, filled with love and adrenaline.

We drove down a long narrow road lined with trees on either side. It was speckled with shades of autumn, fallen leaves danced around us in a vortex as the car flew past.

JD began to slow down as a small layby came into view. He pulled over and turned off the engine.

"We're here, baby girl," he said, gently kissing my cheek. I felt my skin flush and tingle. "Just a little bit of a walk that way, but it's worth it." He pointed through the trees to a f

Losing my mind parenting 3 year old. Donโ€™t know what to do anymore - parenting books for preschoolers.

Iโ€™m hiding in my room with my baby while my 3 year old is in the bathroom crying because she pooped her panties and wonโ€™t let me clean her vagina properly.

I have so many of these cutesy little positive/conscious/gentle parenting books and none of them tell you how to deal with real life situations. Theyโ€™ll say some crap like โ€œgently explain to the child why you need to clean her and if it doesnโ€™t work you can clean it another time. โ€œ meanwhile the child has poo in her vagina which is just asking for a UTI (I know because I got one for the same reason at her age) Or my favorite theyโ€™ll say โ€œwell sheโ€™s probably upset because youโ€™re not connecting with her and you should just wait for hours until sheโ€™s ready.โ€ Meanwhile I have a 4 month old that also needs to be taken care of.

I feel like modern parenting advice is not only often contradictory but also everything is going to traumatize your child. You need to be there for them every second of everyday but you canโ€™t be too close because that will cause a codependent anxious attachment. If youโ€™re there too much youโ€™re a helicopter mom - not enough and that will cause an avoidant attachment.

I just want to scream everyday. I did everything they said I should do when she was a baby and she still developed these anxious habits and I donโ€™t know if theyโ€™re normal or not. Iโ€™m afraid to ever even give boundaries because she does her little anxious habits (like pinching herself or gritting her teeth or hitting her head on something when sheโ€™s angry). And no every physician says sheโ€™s definitely not autistic and I have no way of knowing if this stuff is normal. I try to connect with her and see why she does the behavior but she canโ€™t stay still. Come down to her level calmly and she freaks out even more, hold her hands she just hates that. So I donโ€™t know what to do and will just cry or give myself a time out. And of course THAT will also be considered bad because Iโ€™m not staying with her the whole time and providing her with a safe place to go right? I could stay with her for hour long meltdowns (that didnโ€™t happen often when she was younger) but now that I have her sister I just canโ€™t.

There must be parenting books geared at real life situations with preschoolers. Itโ€™s like carrying a grenade and every move I make Iโ€™m afraid will mess her up psychologically. I donโ€™t want her to have the problems I did as a child but for gods sakes what am I supposed to do.

Anyone have any suggestions? Books, shows, podcasts.

How to Get Perfect Lighthouse scores with Elementor + Some Other Website Tips Your Dad Should Have Taught You (Includes Tips for A+ Security Headers Scan, too)

Proof + LightHouse Confetti

Yes, It's really Elementor and I'm not joshing. Source: Browser plugin called Wappalyzer

I did not think it was possible to get Perfect 100s with Elementor on a real-world, client website running all the plugins and fancy stuff that clients enjoy. However, today I found out that it was indeed possible, and I will give my two-cents on how to make it happen on your website too as a way to give back to all the people who helped me.

I have been working with Elementor for 2 years, and have a rudimentary knowledge of HTML, CSS, & JS, but I am not a developer. I am a marketer and a designer, so that is proof also that this is feasible for non-developers who have a little grit. I also just have found the best plugins and practices to use with Elementor after 50+ client websites designed with it. Here are my tips for how I achieved these scores.

Plugins on this website:

  • All-In-One WP Migration (For exporting the site to the client's domain when I'm done)
  • BBQ Firewall (Additional Security & Easy-Peasy)
  • Code Snippets (To Disable & Modify Junk that messes with my performance scores)
  • Smash Balloon Facebook Feed (standard offering for my company's clients)
  • Elementor & Elementor Pro
  • Flying Pages (for Link Preloading)
  • Litespeed Cache (in conjunction with a Litespeed Host & their partnered Quic Cloud CDN)
  • Perfmatters (First Time Using it, Vital & Absolutely Awesome!)
  • The SEO Framework (Easy & Lightweight SEO Metric Booster)

  • Hello Elementor Theme

Elementor Experiments Enabled:

  • Improved Asset Loading
  • Improved CSS Loading
  • Flexbox Container*
  • All Other Stable Experiments

* I know that Flexbox is considered "alpha" & not production ready, but I built the entire site with it and only had issues with Image Carousels not staying inside their container on mobile, which I fixed by wrapping them inside their own, additional container. Otherwise, it seems to be working well. The DOM size (basically the number of extra nested divs/containers) is greatly reduced when using the new flexbox containers, and it's much more intuitive. I have a site with nearly an id

My boss gives me extra money because I look like his dead daughter. Am I a terrible person for taking it?

Looking at Stephenโ€™s house from the outside, you never would have pegged him for a hoarder. Oh sure, the garden had an occasional bald spot, plus there was a rusty tricycle laying on its side, but Iโ€™d seen worse. Way worse.

It wasn't until he pulled open the door that I get a (literal) taste of what lay in store.

A thick, pungent scent wafted across the porch; picture rotten eggs mixed with a clogged toilet at a Mexican restaurant. That spicy warmth really made my eyes well up.

โ€œIโ€™m Stephen,โ€ said the man. He was a huge, out-of-shape guy in his fifties, dressed in a grey sweatshirt covered with BBQ sauce.

โ€œCourtney,โ€ I replied, after stifling a retch. โ€œThe cleaning service sent me?โ€

โ€œNice to meet you, Courtney.โ€ He repeated the name several times. โ€œYou know, you donโ€™t look like a Courtney. Iโ€™d say youโ€™re more of anโ€ฆAnnie.โ€

I got straight to work, starting with a downstairs lounge where the carpet lay buried beneath ankle-deep fast-food wrappers with rotted leftovers still inside. I battled my way across that mound of filth, blasting furious swarms of flies with disinfectant along the way.

Come sundown, that was the only room even remotely close to clean. โ€œThis is gonna be a bigger job than I thought,โ€ I told Stephen. โ€œWeโ€™re talking weeks.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s okay. I can pay.โ€

On day two, I tackled the kitchen. The sticky floor gripped the soles of my shoes and held on tight, to the point each step became a tug-of-war.

As I washed and dried a tower of used dishes, Stephen hovered nearby, periodically making unusual remarks about my clothes and make-up. I think a darker shade of rogue would make your cheekbones pop. Youโ€™ve really got more of a summer complexion, have you tried wearing more yellows?

After stripping an initial layer of garbage away from the ground floor, I discovered a rather retro house hidden underneath. Most of the furniture was from the seventies: linoleum flooring, old-fashioned record players, floral sofas. Kids' toys lay scattered around here and thereโ€“as well as a childrenโ€™s chef hatโ€“which struck me as odd since Stephen lived alone. Still, not the weirdest thing youโ€™d stumble across in this line of work.

Toward the end of that first week, as I made my way out the front door, he said, โ€œHereโ€™s an idea: what if I cancel the service and pay you directly? The agency takes most of the cash for doing nothing, right?โ€

That had never happened before, and my boss would hit the roof if he found out, but I needed the money real bad

Has anyone tried chickpea and red lentil based pasta? Which one is better?

Iโ€™ve tried Banza chickpea based pasta, itโ€™s pretty good but can get mushy after sauced and has a lingering chickpea taste. Iโ€™m debating trying the Barilla red lentil pasta but not sure how it compares. Donโ€™t want to risk ruining dinner :( Has anyone tried both? Which one stands up better?

Update: tried the red lentil, it beats chickpea by a mile. The only downside is the lack of shape options. But otherwise it maintains its texture even when boiled the full 9 minutes and sauced, no weird taste, no grit. Definitely recommend it!

I regain control of my senses and grab ahold of the modified javelin, aiming the heavy weapon out and into the night.

The great shadowy shape of the man between the mountains is way too far away to hit from here, but I flicker the weaponโ€™s sights and do my best to aim towards the source of the thing that struck the tower.

As I look, however, a second of those shadowy arrows tears through the air towards my position; I flinch, and quick as a flash it strikes the tower in more or less the same place, just up and over to my left. Brick and mortar is sent raining down with clouds of dust and smoke blasting out into the snow. Returning to the weapon with a grimace, I take quick aim and fire; those four, burning, glass-like balls bursting out from the barrel, tumbling down for a secondโ€ฆ for twoโ€ฆ and then shooting up and out towards the target, splitting into further projectiles as they rain that dazzling light out into the gorge.

โ€ฆBut this rain is too little, and too late.

There is a second thunder-like boom and the floor shakes. I release the weapon in alarm and push myself across the floor to the towerโ€™s opposite side, as an enormous section of wall and roof simply breaks away. It collapses with a juddering thud, and then falls slowly to the courtyard below with an almighty crash and rumble. The wind billows with renewed power into the room and it chills me to the bone; snow too is blown in in great swathes as I consider abandoning my post.

Rule Five. Keep a constant presence in the tower.

โ€œFuck! FUCK!โ€

I scramble through the dust and debris to the weapon on the far side- only to realize that it has been lost. Where the weapon was once fixed is now only bare, cracked stone. I grab the ledge and look down over the edgeโ€ฆ and I catch a glimpse of the mechanisms smashed to parts and pieces on the snow-swept ground far below. I lift my gaze and watch in horror as the demons begin clam

My wife has been peeking at me from around corners and behind furniture. It's gone from weird to terrifying

My wife "Lynn" and I have been together for six years and married for 11 months. Our entire history together has been very normal and never once have I noticed any weird behaviors or red flags. I can't stress enough how out of character this whole thing is for her.

Lynn is very kind, intelligent and thoughtful. She's always been the no nonsense type of person. Being childish, or trying to scare me is not something she'd normally do.

She doesn't even like watching horror movies. When we first started dating she agreed to watch The Shining with me because she knew how much I loved horror. She was so scared that she didn't even make it through half of the movie before we had to turn it off. She isn't into anything creepy, and has never been into pranks. It's just not her cup of tea. And that's fine. But that's what was so strange about this. It's just so unlike her.

I should also add that she never had any mental health issues and as far as I'm aware it doesn't run in her family. I know some people are able to hide their mental health problems, but in the six years we've been together I think I'd have seen some sort of sign.

Two months ago, I was in the kitchen making myself some coffee before work. I was running a bit late that morning and knew I wouldn't be able to make it to Dunkin Donuts for my usual morning fix.

I took a sip of my coffee as I hurried down the hall towards the front door, when I happened to notice Lynn peeking at me from around the corner ahead of me. I could only see her eyes, and aย  strand of her long dark hair hanging against the wall. The rest of her body was concealed behind the corner. I nearly spilled my coffee when I saw her. I did burn the shit out of my lips.

"Geeze, Lynn." I said, wiping a few drops of coffee from my pants. "You scared the shit out of me."

She immediately popped out of view like a little kid that had been caught. I heard her scurry off towards the living room, and by the time I got to the front door she was out of sight.

It was really weird, and just totally out of character for her like I said, but I also found it kind of funny that she was being more playful and a little less serious. I shouted that I loved her, and called her a weirdo. As I shut the door behind me I heard her laughing.

Her behavior was a bit odd, but it certainly wasn't something to call a priest over. I forgot about it by lunch and by the time I got home she was her normal self. I didn't bring it up and ne

[Games] World of Warcraft (Part 11: Shadowlands) โ€“ Buttery trans boys, angel cults, and 3D printed nipples from super-hell. Letโ€™s dive into the expansion that finally toppled Blizzard from its MMO throne, and the game that rose up to take its place.

#Part 11 - Shadowlands

This is the last part of my World of Warcraft series. I recommend reading โ€˜Part 8โ€™ first if you havenโ€™t already, because large parts of Shadowlands follow directly on from Battle for Azeroth. If you go in blind, you might get a little confused.

#The Trailer

The final expansion of this series began like all the others โ€“ at a sweaty, vaguely urine-smelling convention centre in downtown Anaheim. But things were different this time around. There were protesters at the doors, boycotts and political scandals around every corner. Something was off.

It was, in all likelihood, the last Blizzcon, but no one knew it at the time.

Blizzard came prepared with everything they had. Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 were unveiled with long, glossy trailers, the likes of which only they could deliver. Hearthstone got its nineteenth expansion, and Warcraft III Reforged entered beta. Major announcement followed major announcement.

But the most important reveal was saved for last.

When Ion Hazzikostas took to the stage, he looked out at an anxious crowd. World of Warcraft was going through a dark patch. Everyone knew it. Batt

An Outcast In Another World (Subtitle: Is 'Insanity' A Racial Trait?) [Fantasy, LitRPG] - Side Story Chapter 5 of 8

Jason had never been in a proper sword fight before. He'd used his blunt hunk of metal to slam creature after creature into a pulp, but he'd never really faced someone who was using a similar weapon. Much less someone who looked exactly like himself. The government had done their best to give him a semblance of training, but it wasnโ€™t as if there was a plethora of ancient masters running around who knew how to wield giant swords. Only reason it was even possible for him to swing this oversized monstrosity was because of the points he'd put into Strength. And without proper guidance, there'd been no choice but to figure out swordfighting as he went. Which had been fine.

Until now.

Range and leverage, he thought to himself, are the keys to fighting an opponent with a melee weapon. No matter what weapon he'd researched, those two points were always at the top of the priority list. The distance your weapon could reach was its biggest limiting factor when it came to combat. So long as you could poke your opponent from out of their range, it didnโ€™t matter if your attacks were less likely to hit โ€“ because you'd have more chances to keep trying, over and over again.

โ€œWe seemed pretty even in power back there, eh?โ€ Jason taunted. A moment before, the two had momentarily locked blades, coming out of the exchange with similar wounds. Which was good โ€“ it let him know that whatever difference they had in strength wouldn't be enough to dictate the result of the fight. โ€œPray to whatever devil created you, because Iโ€™m sending you to meet them right now!โ€

The monster didn't reply. He studied Jason carefully, smirking, and both circled round the other with slow, methodical footwork as they waited for an opening. Humanity had become phenomenal at footwork over its millennia of dueling, and while Jason had little experience with wielding giant swords, he'd tried enough one-on-one combat sports to know when the right time to strike was. When someone takes a step and places their weight on their foot, Jason thought, watching Baker carefully, they canโ€™t move for a moment.

It was a basic law that even monsters couldn't ignore. The moment a person steps forward and plants their right foot on the ground, they experience a form of โ€˜lag.โ€™ It's impossible for them to move that foot away from the ground immediately; there needs to be a pause while they adjust where their weight is placed. Good footwork will minimize this โ€˜lagโ€™ with small, quick steps, but it'll always b

Chapter Thirty Eight: Ashes After Embers

"Simoneโ€ฆ pleaseโ€ฆ I'm telling you, it was her!" Trent begs.

"How the fuck is that possible!? That woman was dead before I was out of diapers!" Simone shouts, still pressing her weapon into the manโ€™s cranium.

"I don't fucking know! The Union lied!?" The sobbing man argues and to his credit, Simone had little trouble believing that.

"But why!? Why did she come back? Why did she murder my father!?" The redhead interrogates.

"I! DON'T! KNOW!" Trent spells out in a frustrated scream.

Shaking her head, Simone dropped the man to the floor. As he attempts to turn and crawl away she forcefully grabs his shoulder and holds him in place. She then kneels down, piercing him with an unblinking emerald gaze.

"Then tell me everything you do know. What happened?"

Wincing from the powerful grip on his collarbone he frantically nods in surrender.

Simone releases him and takes a few steps back to give the blubbering man the chance to talk. It takes him a few minutes to collect himself enough to even begin.

"I was managing things as normal. Nothing even remotely notable. Which was why when I saw that your dad was contacted because of 'short staffing issues' for a part of the mine that wasn't yet suitable for physical workers... I took notice. I looked up who was sending the request, and it was one of the few workers that actually couldn't make it in. I gave 'em a call to see if this was an error. They said they were at home sick as a dog. So I'm thinking this is a whole system error and tried to contact Robert to tell him that he doesn't need to come in. For some reason, couldn't get through. Between juggling explaining to our IT about the system going nuts and trying to nail someone down to track down Robertโ€ฆ it was a confused clusterfuck. IT tellin' me the system was fine, and miners saying no one could find Robertโ€ฆ his suit tracker wasn't working. Turned outโ€ฆ after his body was recovered it was just turned off."

"You saying he did it?" Simone interjects.

"I'm saying... he never checked in with me or anyone. I'd even say he avoided being seen. He knew who he was meeting with. I just don't think he was expecting the outcome."

"How do you know it was Ember?" Simone presses the entailing on.

"Robert didn't know that although I couldn't activate his tracker remotely, his helmet cam was another story with my office console. Security reasons and such. When I pulled up feedโ€ฆ her face was clear as day a

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, Iโ€™d play (and cheat) at hide-and-seek with Mother.

Most children count to ten when they play. I had to count to one hundred.

Was it because Mother wanted to test my patience, or she needed to rest? Probably both.

Eventually I knew the only way I could win was to mumble a short rhyme to myself, then go.

One, two, skip a few, ninety-nine, one hundred.

Once Mother caught on, she made me count in French and English. Not to be beaten, I learned the rhyme in both languages. Mother said tricksters never prospered. I said they always did. They suffer when it comes to putting raw effort into practice and performances. One must do the work correctly. Yet when speed, not time, is of the essence, they come o

[Reaper] Wei Shi Lindon Arelius Sue Chapter 5

Sufficient Velocity:

The reasons why swift advancement was seen as a way to ruin your foundation, soul and future advancement were primarily twofold. The first, obviously, was that the most common way to advance quickly was to ingest raw madra in the form of scales. That was invariably harmful as the soul is not accustomed to taking in vast amounts of madra at once.

The second reason was that even when taking in vast amounts of madra safely in the form of processed elixirs, the soul itself still needed a degree of will behind it in order to guide the madra safely, to not wear at madra channels or run amok in harmful circuits. Of course, there were ways for the soul to avoid such deleterious effects; sophisticated refined products or soulsmith constructs that regulated the flow of madra for its user while their control was still nascent.

By and large, however, willpower was the great bottleneck separating the weak from the strong. Lindon never saw a problem advancing quickly because he was on such an important mission, and because the Heaven and Earth Purification Wheel refined his willpower such that he could handle going from Lowgold to Truegold without any issue, and then to Underlord again. Lindon had earned the right to advance not just through his sheer, mindboggling luck, but because of his hard work. Without it, he never would have left the Gold realm, let alone become the most powerful Monarch in Cradle history.

His willpower was what allowed him to take control of all the madra conferred from the spirit-fruits, and was what allowed him to guide all the lowgold scales that the Sword Sage had gifted him.

Lindon wasted no time splitting his core, reveling in that long-forgotten agony. At Copper, it shouldn't have had any sort of ill effect on him. Even if it did, the cleansing touch of Little Blue, or the Spirit Well, would well take care of that. The damage was so minuscule that he would hesitate to even call it damage at all; just mere scratches destined to heal over, not even leaving any scars.

Then he split it again.

That was... noticeably more destructive, and somehow, it hurt far more. Lindon found himself grunting, even. The scratches in his core became more severe, turning into hairline fractures. Again, they wo

A job for a deathworlder [Chapter 59]

[Chapter 1] ; [Previous Chapter] ; [Wiki + Discord]

Chapter 59 โ€“ Making some progress

Somehow, entering the room always felt like being transported to another world.

It felt oddly out of place on board of the giant, atrocity-class warship, because despite the shipโ€™s size, it was one of the just very few rooms that entirely broke with the largely uniform design that almost all other rooms on board had.

The floor was covered in a rough yet soft, dirty-grey carpet that usually softened any step you took on it, but sometimes let out a soft crunch underfoot instead when you displaced it too much.

The walls were clad in a green, textured wallpaper, that would barely give in should you press against it hard enough on its thicker parts. The wallpaper also seemingly covered the digital clock integrated into the roomโ€™s wall, breaking the theme of that being the one thing any room on board left uncovered.

Instead there was an ancient-looking mechanical clock, with black dashes and hands on a purely white background, hanging in the center of the left wall, that constantly filled the room with a soft but insistent mechanical clicking and gave a more vague idea of the passage of time than its glowing, digital brethren that allowed you to know the exact time of day at just a brief glance.

The rest of the furniture consisted of a large cabinet painted in all black, that was filled with a seemingly random selection of colorful books, standing in front of the same wall the clock was hanging on; a comfortable, velvety-red sofa, over which a protective, brown-beige checkered blanket had been thrown to conserve the material despite constant use at the opposite wall, and a set of a thick, wide, wooden table together with two thickly padded, black armchairs at the roomโ€™s far end.
