Ar15.comโ€™s site is down due to being booted off Godaddyโ€™s servers

This is what ar15.comโ€™s site staff are reporting, unsure if there is more to it. Curious as to this groupโ€™s thoughts on this.

Personally, I didnโ€™t care for their GD and a majority of the users but the tech section was really helpful and informative. Was also interesting to see a majority conservative perspective on a lot of current events and issues so that I could better formulate my own opinion.

Do you think weโ€™re going to see other big websites like this having to migrate to different server hosts?

GoDaddy Phishing Training Fail

I thought this was incredibly insensitive and upon examination a failure on how to properly setup a phishing test.

Yes, I understand phishing training is terribly important, and when done correctly it shows the weaknesses in your organization so you can correct it.

  1. Time of year - GD laid off a significant portion of their workforce, and of those remaining who's spouses have not been so lucky gave a glimmer of hope for a small bump to be dashed later.
  2. GD used their OWN domain name. Not a spelling mistake, or a badly worded email, but a near perfect TRUE email that is clean, from a trusted domain and confirmed by their filtering system.

We are actively doing Phishing training and testing with clients, but we did warn them weeks ago about certain types of email due to the pandemic. Multiple employees of ours are going through some tough times due to spouses, home life, schooling, children's behavior, but this was a poorly timed and executed test. Personally, $650 bonus as a true apology is needed because even though it might not seem much to the company, the talent that is now going to walk is going to cost so much more. Going forward I would participate in the ABSOLUTE minimum and require everything to be in physical printed writing or USPS because you no longer trust the company.

Lesson: Be aware, be sensitive, but also do the test properly.

To everyone switching away from Register.com (or anywhere else): PLEASE do not sign up with GoDaddy. They are literally the worst option you could pick. This INCLUDES register.com.

I see a lot of people asking for suggestions for places to migrate to after Register.com's latest DNS outage. I was going to post this as a comment but there were already so many I was worried people wouldn't see this.

Seriously, do not use godaddy. I already wrote a long comment about this but I want to repost it so people see it. Feel free to ask any questions :)

Here's the benefits of not using GoDaddy:

  • Pricing that isn't insane! $25/yr for .com and whois protection?!? what??? I pay less than $10/yr for this through cloudflare. A few hundred domains and this starts to add up. You can save $(X)X,000/yr by just not signing up with the literal worst offers available on the internet.

  • Competent support staff members! I haven't had to contact them in years (which should really be its own bullet point), but last time I talked to them - like, on the phone, because they put the phone number in the footer of every page - namecheap had great support

  • No more upsells!! One time I got a phone call trying to sell me on email service ๐Ÿคฎ

  • (This is the big one) A lack of dark patterns and flat out deception to stop you from migrating away. Godaddy will actively work against you every step of the way when you try to move away. This is not a healthy business relationship and you will regret signing up with godaddy when you eventually want to migrate

Seriously, there's no reason to use godaddy, 1&1, network solutions, or anything else like that, unless you're forced to by your employer. They're all literally identical services that just forward information you tell them to the ICANN. In fact godaddy and friends are often worse because they'll wait the maximum 3 days they're allowed to before sending your information to make it harder to migrate off. Register your domain on namecheap for a year and then transfer it to cloudflare. If you don't want to use those two there's still plenty of other good options you can find in 30 seconds on google. Here's a tip though, if it costs more than $13/yr after the first year (shitty registrars will often sell the first year registration at a loss and then charge $20-30 every year after that) for a .com, they're relying on the fact that you don't know anything. The registrar business is insanely competitive because there's nothing anyone can offer to be better other than good support, which you won

Seriously? My tiny site is excruciatingly slow and throws HTTPS2 and 503 errors. I wondered if there's some misconfiguration on the backend, so I called the support. First time I ever heard the economy shared linux hosting plan doesn't have enough resources to support all the PHP processes for Wordpress. I'm this close to leaving them, tell me I'm wrong.

MX records disappeared from GoDaddy DNS. Any possible reasons?

I noticed I stopped receiving emails and after a couple of days of trying to figure out the problem an online tool told me that I didn't have any MX records. I haven't really touched my DNS configuration in several years. I added in the necessary MX records and email did indeed start flowing again. There doesn't appear to be any audit log in GoDaddy to see how the existing MX records got deleted. Other than changing my password, is there any thing else I should be concerned with?

Why are Celsius still using GoDaddy?

>UPDATE: Sometime between Dec 6 and Dec 26, Celsius migrated from GoDaddy to Gandi as their registrar (with zero downtime, I believe). That's great news! View their latest whois record here.

As most users are aware, about a month ago Celsius had a significant downtime of 24-48 hours. It was initially labelled as a DNS migration issue, although they hinted at discovering a possible security issue which caused the system to be down for longer than expected.

While I donโ€™t think theyโ€™ve explained the exact issue (sadly we are still waiting on the official incident report that Alex promised during the following AMA), it is highly likely that the downtime was related to a security breach that happened at GoDaddy whereby attackers were able to take control of several crypto companiesโ€™ DNS. This was reported by KrebsOnSecurity as affecting Liquid.com most severely, but also Celsius and others.

Now Alex tweeted that they would definitely be moving away from GoDaddy. But several weeks later, they appear to still be registered with them.

WHOIS lookup for celsius.network domain

This is a pretty major concern, as GoDaddy do not have a great record of learning from their mistakes. DNS remains a potential attack vector until a new registrar is found. I would have thought that this transition would be of utmost priority, and Iโ€™m not sure why it seems to have stalled.

Perhaps weโ€™re unlikely to get an official update from Celsius via Reddit, but I think depositors should be aware that this has not yet been resolved.

GoDaddy Can Suck a Fat Turd!

So picture this... It's a rainy English summer day, and your phone's chimes saying your domains are about to expire.

Okay cool I think, I have auto renew turned on, but I'll log on and check.

To my shock and horror it takes me through and GoDaddy is about to charge me close to ยฃ350 to renew my 3 domains.

I instantly turn off auto renewal, and call GoDaddy.

After waiting for around 30 mins I am greeted by quite possibly the most unwelcoming soul I've ever had the misfortune of speaking to.

I kindly (but firmly) request that next time, they should take me out to dinner before they try to f**k me.

I ask why I was about to be charged so much for auto renewal. The support worker explained how the auto renewal cannot be changed to a desired length and it will "randomly" pick a lease from 1 year to I think 9 he said.

Naturally I was in awe of the stupidity, I questioned this logic, and was met with dismissal. He said it's just the way it is. And I was told their is no way I can renew automatically on a yearly basis.

The option I was provided was to disable automatic renewal and do it manually. Fine I said, will I still be notified a month prior to expiry? "I can't say for sure". Was his reply.

Again I awe of the lack of confidence in their own service. I firmly Request he find out, as my service depends on it.

After another 10 minutes waiting I get the answer, yes I will be notified. "I hope I have been of assistance to you today" No... No you have not.

So I paid for my years renewal at ยฃ12 for each domain, and went about my day. Albeit slightly more annoyed than prior to that call.

Suffice it to say I will be changing registrar come next renewal date. Any recommendations?
