Just starting the Malazan Series with Garden of the Moon on Kindle. Do I need a glossary or the Dramatis Personae from the first pages while reading?

Hey everyone, I just bought the book. I love ebooks much more nowadays and can’t go back to hardcover. Though the one BIG problem is it’s a pain in the ass to go to glossary and back to the book many times in one reading. So I tend to take pictures of those pages to my phone if they are necessary. My question is, do I need any supporting materials while reading to prepare? Thanks a lot!

A Half-Baked Glossary of Terms

Hail travellors/pathfinders/warriors/sorcerers, so theres alot of inside jokes/terms in Arcadum's games. Take a gander if you would like some added context :)

The time for mercy has passed - Battle begins, players snap to grid and roll initiative.

Tragic/Unfortunate - Such is the cost of bad rolls pepeHands

One Moment Please - Often a response from Arcadum after players make a greivious mistake or bad roll. This phrase is followed by a brief period of suspence, then tragedy. Chat likes to use OneMoPls for added effect :)

(Edit: Not always a bad sign, just memed that way. In all honesty Arcadum is just calculating or checking something behind the scenes)

I have good news and potentially upsetting news - yeeeah theres no good news...

F - Arcadum's streams gets interrupted sometimes. Please be patient and refresh Twitch! Arcadum has been trying to fix this problem for a long time and is curr

CW / shorthand glossary or reference for beginners?

What references did you all use when you first starting CW QSOs?

I recently decided to get into hf so I built a QRP-labs QCX, made an iambic paddle and learned cw. I am currently pretty reliant on the decode functionality, but I’m started to get the hang of copying.

I’ve made contacts, including DX (only ~1100 km) every time I get on the air I hear a ton of things I don’t understand. I can find common abbreviations / q codes etc, but I don’t know all of the (common?) formatting etc. I am assuming most of it is for contesting?

For example: CQ DE callsign/3 TEST What is the “/3” after the call sign? Is test short for “contest”?

Basically just looking for some references to improve my CW communicating skills. Or a glossary to search when I see things I don’t understand. (Documents/videos/??)

Ideally something formatted for beginners that explains common things you run into on the air.

Board Clear: Refers to any effect which removes multiple followers usually through a form of AoE.

Bounce: Returning a follower or amulet to a player’s hand from the board. Forestcraft has the most bounce effects.

Burn: Damage dealt to a leader from a spell or effect, often recurring.

"OpenWRT" for dummies guide? High Level overview? Glossary? Documentation with GUI screenshots? Guides for idiots like me? (the wiki is impenetrable [ to me]).

I'm a Computer tech with over 25 years experience turning screws and solving problems, most of it with IPV4 routing. I'm comfortable with almost any GUI setup for any network equipment. I've setup hundreds of routers and network devices, from ancient appletalk phone line connectors to original 802.11B networks. I've gutted routers and made my own antennas. I am not a network technician, but I always feel like I can get anything you'd find in the home or on the client side up and running.

Yet buying a small GL.inet 300M router and flashing the newest build of openWRT onto it basically dumped me into a GUI where literally nothing made any sense to me. I could conceptually understand what it wanted, but every single piece of terminology and option was like from an Apollo-era rocket. I'm surprised no one yelled out "set SCE to AUX!" when I tried to get it to do a simple "client mode" I've done 50 times on various ethernet bridges in 2 minutes before.

And none of the documentation matche

I'm really enjoying the game so far, but I find myself overwhelmed with game mechanics and keywords, and cannot find a great resource which simply lists out keywords in a convenient way. Does anyone know of such a resource? I have found https://www.stoneblade.com/rules, which lets me read the rule book for each expansion separately, but I was hoping to find something like a master glossary which would be much easier to navigate. Pleased let me know if there's any mistakes or important info I am missing!

This guide is intended for new viewers to GTA RP. So you've never heard of GTA RP or NoPixel, are wondering why it's popular, and/or are looking for answers to some frequently asked questions, check this out!

What this guide covers

• Explains what this niche of entertainment is
• Some important rules viewers should know about
• Glossary of popular slang/terms used by the roleplayers (Mostly GTA RP specific, and not necessarily every internet/Twitch slang)

This guide is NOT the following

• Not a list of favourite streamers or "must-watch characters"
• Not the place to discuss or ask questions related to what's going on with the server or characters (There's another thread for that).
• Not a guide to actually playing on NoPixel (you'll want to see the official NoPixel website for that)

Mixed doubles glossary

Are there any established glossary for mixed doubles? If not, maybe we can come up with something, if only just for fun?

For example, Dean Gemmell proposed using the Burger and the Bun way back in 2013, but I don't think this ever caught on. I think the 15 vs 234 players are still unnamed until now. (Note that they are allowed to switch roles between ends).

Mike Harris & Bruce Rainnie coined "penalty kill"/"shorthanded goal" for when a team can force/steal against powerplay. I believe these terms are borrowed from hockey, and these two are the only ones that use them, so I don't think it quite caught on yet.

What about special types of deuces? I've seen enough now that I think some of these can be named. For example, when the last two stones thrown by a team become counters for the deuce, what would you call that? (Note that these two stones are thrown by two different persons).

*spoilers* End of Dragon reborn and Spoilers in the glossary?

First time posting in this sub! I just finished Dragon Reborn and I've spoiled myself while looking at the character descriptions in the glossaries. Just wanna know if this is gonna have an impact in anyway or if it's minor. Spoilers ahead

When I looked at Selene's description, it's stated that this is the other name for Lanfear and I did not know this at all until now, nor I have guessed it, although she obviously always seemed a dubious character. Just wanna know if I've spoiled myself from anything major?

Also, minor commentary about the dragon reborn and the books so far. The antagonists don't seem very strong as of yet, although they're described so, and the characters seem to get everything kinda easily by the end (especially, didn't like the use of Balefire as a lot point) someway or the other. Hopefully this changes in the upcoming books but other than that loving the series so far!

Glossary of line item terms used in SEC filings

Does anyone have know where I can find a glossary of accounting terms used in SEC filings?

I'm working through Penman's Financial Statement Analysis right now which is a great book but is heavy on the accounting aspect of valuation. Which I love but I'm running into some trouble because I dont know all of the terms used in the Sec filings.

For instance in the statement of shareholders equity I need to identify specific flows in order to reformat the statement. But because there are so many different terms its hard for me to accurately identify what I need.

For instances: in nike statement they have a specific line for share issuance to employees.

Whereas P&G does not but they have employee stock plans and esop debt impact listed in their equity statement.

Are either of these equivalent to share issuance. And back to my original question where can I find a break down of commonly used terms in Sec filings so I can continue my studies?

Thanks!

New to the game, looking for a glossary of Trackmania

Hi everyone ! So this is my first trackmania and I'm wondering if a glossary about the game exist somewhere, espcially with the map types. So far I heard Lolmap, fullspeed, Press forward but I guess there is a lot and I can't find it anywhere.

I'm looking to give a proper name to my campaign and I would like to make it with the name that fits my map style. There are all relying on the same principle, some traps, some shorcuts, some tricky jumps, in a realistic environnement (made a bridge, a boat, a mountain, a flipper, etc...) and are quite long (between 1:10 for the shortest and 2:50 for the longest). I found the term "Overdose" but I'm not sure.

So does anybody have a link to well made trackmania-wiki with a glossary ?

I designed and printed a catalog of my game collection, complete with ToC, Key, Index, and Glossary. Link to full PDF in the comments

https://imgur.com/a/KckjW2G

I just recently learned how to use the data merge and index functionality in Adobe InDesign, and I decided to use that knowledge to create a handy catalog of my board games.

My goal with this was to make something that can sit on our coffee table and can be appealing/informative to both board game enthusiasts and people who don't know much about the hobby.

The other purpose is to encourage more play of the games already in my collection, and to be more intentional about the kind of games I'm going to add to it in the future. That being said, I have the InDesign file set up in a way that should make changes/additions relatively painless (Table of Contents and Index automatically updates, pages auto shuffle around, etc). I also found a photo album that is perfect for binding it, so changing pages out is pretty effortless as well.

[Arma] Project Glossary

##This resource is intended as recommended reading for those who are interested in it, the same way we recommend dslyecxi's tactical guide in every event post for Arma.

Hello PA, it is I Count Orlok Oriskana and I would like your help to create PA's (Arma part) glossary!

So let's go over the what, why and how.

# What is glossary?

an alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations; a brief dictionary.

# But why I hear you. There are three reasons:

1. Not every PA member is military vet

2. Not every PA member is English native speaker

3. Some PA members are neither military vets or English native speakers.

This can lead to miscommunication during the events, because the person you are speaking might not understand what are you trying to tell them or they different understanding of the term you are using. So this glossary will hopefully serve to prevent this.

Glossary or Reference chart

I have a decent grip on the tech and discussions for retro gaming and what not but at times come across acronyms that I'm not sure what the post is discussing.

Any chance on getting a comprehensive FAQ / Glossary of the different terms and parts commonly discussed for systems.

Ex.

CRT - Cathode Ray Tube television - (specific description)

A/V cables - Red, White, Yellow audio and video cables connecting console to tv

Etc. Have a reference guide for new or old sub members who are afraid to ask and sound stupid. Difference between RGB and Component and Composite hook ups. What specifically is SCART? Etc. Could be addressed in a tight little pinned post.

Anyone think this would work or be useful for the sub?

Good glossary (modulations, clock, effects, LFO, envelopes...)

Even if you don't use modular synthesizers, your DAW or your hardware instrument may use terms and concepts that come from modular synthesis.

This glossary can be useful: https://learningmodular.com/glossary - it focuses on modular synthesizers, but it also covers generic concepts and terms used in any kind of production (modulations, clock, effects, LFO, envelopes...).

Definitions look clear to me; many of them link to further articles and/or videos.

A collection of words and meanings of terms. (A mini glossary of Sufism)

Ādab: All of the requirements of Sufi etiquette and discipline. Ādab is an Arabic term used to refer to proper demeanor or courtesy as well as to the broader categories; a set of principles that regulates the best manners and attitudes; propriety. Each of the Sufi orders has had its own distinctive brand of ādab. Tasawwuf is based upon ādab, which extends from right behavior with regard to the Sacred Law (sharī‘ah) and reaches to unceasing spiritual courtesy to Allāh himself.

Akhlāq: Ethics, moral qualities, character traits. Underlying principles governing the specific requirements of Sufi behavior as elaborated by the various orders. Tasawwuf is based upon assuming the beautiful and noble character traits, which were perfected by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may the blessing and peace be upon him).

Arwāh: Plural of rūh. See. Ruh.

Awliyā: Plural of walī. See. Walī.

‘Āshiq: The origin of the word is ‘ıshq, which means love or divine love in Arabic. ‘Āshiq means in this context, love

Is it harmful to have a glossary in the back of a book?

My story takes place across an entire world that I have created and within my narrative I have included all the relevant information about major locations in the book. However, I recently had the idea to add a glossary with fun snippets of information that would otherwise be infodumps in the narrative. It would act as a mini-Encyclopedia of my world.

For example, information on historical figures in my world that otherwise only receive a brief introduction, or more information on a group of people that are otherwise only featured for a chapter. My book is told from a third person limited perspective, so I thought it would be a fun addition. At the same time, I have searched the term "glossary" on this subreddit, and the connotation seems to be largely negative.

Is there anywhere I can find a glossary for Lovecraftian language?

I've just stated reading Lovecrafts stories and I'm thoroughly enjoying them. But I'm having a bit of trouble with some of his references and language. There's entire sentences it takes several google searches for me to translate.

Are there any resources (books, websites) that I should refer to that have a good compilation of the meanings behind some of the words? I found a couple of sites but they're by no means extensive.

Glossary for common sound types?

Thanks a ton for reading my question!

So, I was wondering. There are a lot of sounds, in EDM for example, that are similar. Different artists use different variations of them, but you can hear a distinct similarity. For example, in this particular case I'm looking for the kind of sound that deadmau5 likes to use a lot in his drum-only parts. In "Ghosts n' Stuff" it kicks in at round second 0:10, sounds like a long inverted snare (just not sure if it actually is). A similar sound can be heard in "I Remember" right from the very beginning, also kicking in at 5:38, and pretty much all throughout the track. This sequence of long sounds that keeps fading in or fading out.

Are there names for these types of pretty well known and used sounds? And if so, where can I maybe find a glossary of them or something? Is going on reddit and asking "how do you make this sound from Song XYZ kicking in at minute X:XX" the only way of figuring this stuff out? Obviously there are very specific sounds that

Does the translator community use translation glossaries / where does it discuss terminology?

Hi, brand new translator here. The old translation post is archived (https://reddit.com/r/tutanota/comments/agjnxp/general_discussion_for_translators/ which is also linked from the welcome email) so I thought I'd post my question in a new post.

What's the way to discuss translations for highly-used terms? Am I missing something obvious?

I can see we have a glossary with a list of terms, but I can't see any localised standards or a place for discussion on them: https://app.phrase.com/accounts/tutao-gmbh/glossaries/42ab00d593713507964d0f7a73ca7616?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query=encryption
