In my novel, two of the main characters are in a fight with a wraith and its name isn't revealed, but will be later in the novel. I have trouble referring to the wraith and other unnamed characters without making it redundant. What should I do?
"You are prepared?" My father asked, a massive hand on each shoulder, brown eyes peering intently into mine.
I nodded, trying my best to meet his eyes, feeling the tears come unbidden to my own. There were many things I wished to say, but no time left to say it. We were both to blame for the things that remained unspoken. Each had avoided the other in the weeks leading up to this Day of Parting. I knew why we were shadows to one another -- he did not want me to see his fear and I did not want him to see I was afraid.
Now there were precious few moments to find courage in the eyes of the man who had raised me. I bit my lip to keep it from quivering but let the tears flow unchecked. I had learned what he could provide, but I was cursed all the same.
"E..." He began.
The letter. It was a rock upon my family, weighing it down with its ill omen since the day I was born and the bones were cast.
An E was an unfortunate beginning for a boy and a damned beginning for a girl. This was not a thing a chose, but it was the path set before me.
Each letter formed the heart of a tree of letter names, some noble and good and others that were more shameful than a coward's death to bear. The E possessed fewer routes to nobility than all other letters but the blighted Q. Thankfully, the Q rarely appeared in the bones. The same was said to be true of the E, but I stood here as the proof that it did occur.
I had gathered what information I could about the other Nameless in the clans, and the results had been discouraging. Some of my paths had been eliminated purely by the distribution of letters.
There was no V among the Nameless.
I would not be called Evern. Or Ealvn.
They were among the shortest of noble E names, and their loss was keenly felt.
The possibility of a C existed, though there were only three and each was said to be of strong arm and considerable skill.
Eccra would be very difficult.
The best possibilities lay in the common letters, ensuring there would be ample opportunities to find a particular letter during the Naming, but all common letters from the E heart were long and therefore more treacherous.
Exanmia.
Eponnil.
Elarcha.
They were common letters, but they formed a noble name. Not a powerful name, but honorable.
Of course, unlike the Q, the E was twice cursed. It possessed many limitations as a name heart, yes, but it was also a valuable letter to many other letter hearts. Even if the E were plentiful, I would b

Iโll admit that there are a few new school rappers I donโt listen to based on their name alone. Like I have no idea if Playboy Cardi or YDN Cordae can spit and honestly donโt care to find out ( til now). I understand itโs stupid and illogical but I canโt be the only one. Dababy, Lil baby, tory lanez,
So what are some rappers you donโt like just cause or their name?
and more importantly... who did you put off listening to based on their name, and then hated yourself for sleeping on them for so long?
Sorry for the rant, thereโs a TL;DR summary at the bottom of the post. ๐
I have struggled with the consequences of a weird name for the past 27 years, and I know Iโm not the only one out there! My name is Bree - not short for Breanna, and yes I know itโs like the cheese. I have never met another Bree whose name was just Bree, but I have met a few people who shortened their names to Bree (or some other variation). The story goes that my mother heard the name Breanna, but didnโt like Anna due to knowing an unsavoury character with that name. Therefore she decided to remove Anna and went with just Bree. My two middle names are very common in contrast to my first name, which makes for a terrible combination.
I work with the public (in rural Canada, for context) and every day I have to repeat my name when introducing myself. When people ask for my name, I often spell it out. I have pretty well stopped correcting mispronunciations because itโs almost constant. One time I was even called Bruce in front of a large auditorium of spectators. That turned into a fun nickname for the remainder of my university days. Speaking of nicknames, my parents call me Breezy, probably taken from the old Covergirl slogan (โeasy breezy beautiful covergirlโ). So charming.
I wouldnโt go through the effort of changing my name, just because it would be a headache to change professionally. Also, no one would take it seriously, and everyone would still call me Bree. Everyone I talk to about it loves my name and cannot understand my frustration. Is there anyone else out there that knows my pain? Would love to hear other personal stories of name frustrations to make me feel better haha.
TL;DR - My name is Bree. Itโs weird, and I constantly deal with people calling me the wrong name or mispronouncing my name. I am frustrated and looking for others that relate to my struggle.
Edit: Very surprised to see how many people know someone named Bree! Once again, that wasnโt my experience so itโs interesting to see such different perspectives. Just goes to show how much names vary based on location/culture/generation.

... keep reading on reddit โกThis was something that someone else brought up to me. To be clear, I completely disagree. I don't really think that deadnaming is acceptable in any circumstance from what I understand, but I'm cis so I don't particularly know. The person I was talking to argued that since (deadname) was a character, they should be referred to by that name, even if it is a deadname. Again, don't at all disagree. What should the character in older videos be referred to as? The man who isn't there? The first initial of their name (or deadname, depending on how you look at it)?
I don't have a solid conclusion, really. Maybe the man who isn't there? Would love to hear the thoughts of y'all.
EDIT: /u/Mystic_Maya answered this well below. Abi addressed this ~1h into the post mortem, saying that we can just say "that's Abi before she transitioned/came out." Question solved n answered. God save this queen
I'm half Chinese but both of my given names are European, along with my last name cause my dad is white (lmao). I get jealous of people that have Chinese components in their name, or even just a separate English and Chinese name.
Because of the way I was treated when I grew up, I definitely feel more Asian than white, but its not represented in my name. I have thought about just giving one to myself, from my grandfather or great grandfather, but it sort of feels fake to me.
Why couldn't I have gotten a name from both parts of my heritage? Anyways, rant over.
Would you have been 'The Bloody', 'The Great', 'The Confessor' or worse?
I think I'd have been 'The Unready' on account of being a but lastminute.com
A while back I saw a post about some strange things a fey creature might ask for. I was intrigued when someone mentioned asking for them to GIVE their name.
Anyway, I improvised a disguised hag encounter last night wherein my players were running through a hostile forest coming to life. They saw the light from a small hut in a clearing and bee-lined it there. A doddering old woman answered the door and let them in. The players assumed she was a simple old woman with memory issues, but the wizard rolled really high on an insight check, and got a hint that she wasnโt quite as doddering as she seemed.
Throughout the encounter, while the rogue was stealing her stuff of course, the woman asked the paladin, and then the cleric, to give her their names. I was very careful in my wording as well. Each time she asked them to GIVE her their names, and they each without hesitation gave her their full names and titles.
When she asked the wizard to give his name however, it seems he noticed the trend and got spooked. He gave her his first name only.
The woman noticed this too and stopped asking. So now she has been GIVEN 2 1/2 names from these adventurers. She is part of a hag coven that will probably come into play in the central plot. What kinds of things could she/they do with them?
The story was, I guess, supposed to be about being able to choose your family and not having to adhere to what people expect you to be yadda yadda. That I fully understand and itโs a decision I would probably be on board with given the circumstances were different. Rey Skywalker, in theory, could definitely work.
The only problem is, with the final products of TLJ and TRoS as backing, why would she even want to take that name?
Like, she doesnโt have a single heartfelt conversation with Luke before he dies. Heโs nothing but rude and nasty to her from the moment she meets him to the moment she leaves, he seems more preoccupied with slowly wasting away than teaching her anything meaningful, she shames him for creating Kylo Ren, she basically ends up teaching herself everything with the help of Leia (who doesnโt even call herself a Skywalker and still goes by Organa), and only has a single meaningful conversation with him (that we know of) after his death. I mean sure he โredeemedโ himself with the Crait shit, but like A.) she didnโt know about that til probably well after it happened and B.) that still shouldnโt change the entire sour experience he put her through. They guy was a dick to her at every moment, I wouldnโt think much different of him. Maybe Iโd see him in a slightly better light maybe, but not a โtake his fucking last nameโ light. Like thatโs for someone you have a real close bond with, and weโve been given nothing close to a close bond between Luke and Rey on-screen, or were even hinted at one off-screen. She may have taken it as a โI'm here to inspire the Galaxy and take up the mantleโ thing, but even that makes no sense because she didnโt even know the fucker existed until like a year prior and even your average resistance grunt knows that he straight up abandoned the Galaxy. So even that doesnโt work.
The closest person she had a bond with was, well everyone has said it, Han Solo. He put a good deal of trust in her, offered her a job as part of his crew, led her to Maz Kanata, etc. The guy was a genuinely good mentor figure and was, dare I say it, pretty well written as one for her. That and having that connection to Kylo Ren sorta ran home that she was closest to being a Solo than a Skywalker, so having her choose the latter makes no real sense.
That and a story apparently all about choosing your family and adoptive names that has no mention of fucking Bail Organa, you know, **Princess Leiaโs adoptive father and the ent
... keep reading on reddit โกThe UK and the USA go through slightly different cycles of which baby names are popular, so sometimes it's easy to guess that someone isn't from your own side of the pond just by the name - for instance, I've never met a single American named Oliver, which is apparently a common name still on your side.
What sorts of name stand out to you in that regard?
