How to understand why it has taken so long for things on our planet to go to total shit. Picture a gigantic freight train that stretches for miles and imagine each car of the train is a giant but fiendishly diabolical battery.

It's difficult to comprehend the sheer magnitude of our fuck-uppery. I'm talking about the climate, but also the ecological devastation of course.

And yet, until now, it was easy for most folks to deny that we were on a one way ticket to hell. After all, everything seemed to go on as "normal" year after year for the last few decades. This despite ever more dire warnings from the climatologists and the ecologists.

So, what's the deal-eeo? Are we fucked or not?

Yes. And here's why.

If our earth systems are like a giant freight train then you can imagine there is a lot of inertia. It takes a long time to get a giant freight train moving. It also takes a long time to get a giant freight train to stop.

That is a very useful metaphor for our catastrophic climate predicament.

I often get a glimmer of understanding when I explain that we cannot wait until we see the cliff ahead of us to hit the brakes, way too late, we had to hit the brakes a mile before we even could see the cliff. Even then we would just barely stop in time. That's how big this giant freight train is.

Guess what? We are sailing off the cliff right now as we speak and everyone still has their foot stomped on the gas. Oops!

Sadly, even that dire and almost hopeless picture does not go nearly far enough.

For, you see, our oceans have been absorbing vast amounts of our fuck-uppery for decades now. Imagine that! Two thirds of our planet is covered with an extremely efficient thermal sink. One that absorbs CO2, too! Fabulous!! Right?!?

No. And here's why.

Going back to our dark and desperate giant freight train metaphor, imagine that every car on the train is a giant battery.

  • The train won't even START moving until every giant battery is charged.
  • Meaning, we have to keep our foot on the gas for decades until the all the batteries are charged and we finally start moving.
  • The diabolical part? The batteries have no "off" switch. Once they are charged they accelerate the train non-stop until totally exhausted.
  • Think about that.
  • The train barely starts moving after we have had our foot stomped on the gas for 50 years.
  • Even if we take our foot of the gas now the train would continue to accelerate for another 50 years until mile after mile of giant batteries are dead!
  • Stomping on the brakes has no effect, other than fireworks as they burn off, not as long as the batteries are still charged. No off-switch, remember?

Now, hopefully, you start to comprehend the situation we ar

Is there a standard model for solar system formation that is the most common, in regards to placement of gas giants, rocky planets, ice particles, etc?

I ask because I was thinking about hot Jupiters and how common they seem to be found. Which I suspect might not be because of their commonality , but because of their detection method. Binary star systems seem to have separations that are typically further away, but that could also be detection methods.

Basically I was wondering if Gas giants are expected to be close to their star, like hot jupiters, and why binaries are found separated sometimes by a fraction of a light year away.

[TOMT][MOVIE] An old scifi like animated movie, where the main characters lived on a giant ship or city on a planet, and had monsters/animals laying eggs, and theres a scene where these eggs are stolen?

Bare with me, I was a very small child (born 99) when I had first watched this movie. As a child, I thought the movie was already old, comparing its animation to others like Disney. I have few memories of the movie itself, I can only remember one or two scenes, but I'm positive if I were to see pictures of it I can confirm.

One of the locations was either a city or a ship, its difficult to remember exactly since I knew a mass amount of people were living there and yet they had super defenses, but they had an area where they kept animals, who laid eggs, I believe they were golden. There was an attack by dinosaur looking birds, I believe people were riding them, but they attempt to steal these eggs. The main characters ride their flying animals iirc after the group that stole the eggs. Unfortunately this is most of what I remember, I do think there were scenes where they were investigating fallen shipwrecks, but I could be mixing that with another movie. Any help is appreciated, I'm sorry for what little information I can remember!

A giant, artificial object is about to crash into the planet while the game is in a terrible state. If there's an Ahamkara inside, we've officially gone full Final Fantasy 14.

For context, if you've never played FF14: years ago, the game was broken and buggy and everyone hated it, so the dev's made a moon crash into the planet. This "moon" turned out to be an artificial one, using an imprisoned dragon god as a giant solar panel. Needless to say, he wasn't happy. This triggered a full relaunch of the game, which is currently the highest-rated MMO in the world.

Now I'm not saying Bungie is going to do anything quite so drastic, but... I can dream, can't I?

What Galaxy is best for Swamp biomes and also what planets do giant worms spawn in?

Hey all! I’ve been playing origins today for the first time and I love the new swamps. I’m in a green galaxy but I can’t seem to find an updated list online that shows what planets spawn in which galaxies. Also, I found one of those giant worms on a volcanic planet! I wanted to know what other biomes they’ve been found in, so if you’ve seen any, let me know! Edit: I found a swamp planet with a giant worm, and also someone in the comments posted their swamp planet with worms!

Giant Boss Raid: Ego the Living Planet Concept

I recently watched Cynicalex's video about Giant Boss Raid and I already had the idea of adding Ego the Living Planet to the game so thought why not add Ego the Living Planet as a new Giant Boss Raid where you could get his biometrics, alongside other reworked rewards.

Ego would have 80 Bars of Health. You would be fighting Ego in the caverns, near his core, on his planet from Guardians of Galaxy 2. The fight against Ego would be split in to 3 main Phases and smaller ones while you transfer between the main phases of the fight.

Phase 1

Ego would start of as in his human form and the fight would start similar to a world boss fight in large rectangular arena, with ego doing various attacks. He would be able to summon light tentacles that attack the enemies and even inflict Paralysis. Another of his attacks would be him throwing balls of light at the players. He would be able to summon a large tentacle than the others that would trap a player by impaling them, he would keep hold of them for 15 seconds (Not doing much damage its own) but if the tentacle is destroyed by another player they are freed. Once he reaches 60 bars of health, he would enter his the change over to Phase 2

Human form of Ego

Phase 1 to Phase 2

Upon finishing phase 1 he would have become his blue skeleton form and go to the centre of the arena and be invincible, where orbs of light would travel towards him. This would function kind of similar to what happens in the Galactus fight, as these orbs would heal Ego as and if enough reach him he would turn back to his human form, go back to 80 bars and the players would have to redo phase 1. The players can stop the orbs from reaching him by collecting them, this would heal them instead. If enough orbs are stopped he will become enraged and will become a man made of rocks and be around 4-5 times large than he was and you enter Phase 2

The blue skeleton form

His rock form would look like he does here

Phase 2

During Phase 2 ego is constantly summoning tentacles to attack the players. And will do various attacks that penetrate everything (The attacks with a purple indication). One of these would be Ego putting his hands to floor end

A habitable planet with no animal life left on the surface...obviously machine-drilled giant holes...and some mutant underground nocturnal creatures

These new earthlings are clearly late to the party. I’m thinking some other alien life (that also fucked up their home planet) has already been to this world & killed off those big creatures who’s bones have been dug up, and after making a mess of the surface, have found a way to survive underground.
