As someone with a genetic disease I think people who have a genetic disorder and choose to have kids are selfish. Philip DeFranco is one of these people.

Phillip Defranco is a popular youtube commentator. He has polycystic kidney disease that he inherited from his father and grandfather. His father got a kidney transplant from a fan, Phil has said he will probably need one in the future as well. Phil has 2 children and has acknowledged in videos there's a high risk of his kids inheriting the disease as well.

I personally have a genetic disease I inherited from my father and grandmother, and I suffer every day in pain, doctor appointments, treatment and medical bills. I don't understand why someone with a genetic disease would ever choose to have children and risk your children suffering. I love my hypothetical kids too much to bring them into a world of suffering. If you want kids that badly adopt. Seeing people like Phillip Defranco acting this way, people like my parents, I think they are very selfish.

I'm childfree because I don't want to pass on my genes that will cause a person to suffer the way I do, and the way my father and grandmother have. If I ever do decide to have kids I would rather adopt, I'm even thinking of getting a vasectomy..

Magic systems without genetic predispositions to magic

I’m looking for the rare examples in fantasy magic systems where there is no genetic predisposition to being able to use magic. Basically, a system where nobody is a wizard just because you were born with a seemingly genetic ability to use magic. I’m not saying I want a system where everyone’s a mage or everyone can be a mage, just that magic can potentially be learned by anyone with a certain aptitude like any job in real life. Nobody is β€œborn” to be a rocket scientist or astronaut for example, but anyone can potentially be one if they have the right skills.

The best example are wizards from D&D, who learn magic from studying it and anyone smart enough and dedicated enough who can get the proper training can be a wizard.

The Rivers of London series also has a similar system, as magic is basically just an extension of science in that world. Anyone can learn it, but it’s very hard and there aren’t many teachers who can teach it left in the world.

In your experience, how much does genetic potential really matter?

I was watching a strength running video and they were talking about the difference between the elite and sub elite runners. Generally, they do the same training, but the elites just respond better. However, I've found little on how this applies to the typical runner. Given elite marks of 2:05-2:10 in the marathon and around 13:00 in the 5k, how close do you think the median (or a little above) runner could theoretically get to either? Assume a male between 25 and 40 with no injuries who could spend the next 5-10 years training as a full time job with support staff. Basically if Bruce Wayne decided to to be a runner.

Additionally, what do you think are the barriers (20 min 5k etc.) that >95% of healthy prime age runners can potentially break? If you have sources that's awesome, but I'm really just hoping for the opinions of some experienced runners/coaches.

AITA for telling this lady her son has bad genetics after she insulted me?

I do some physical fitness instructing at a local gym. I like to think I’m good at what I do. Ive trained a bunch of people with success. I’m in shape but not really a big guy at all(5’6 165 lbs) but I’m decently strong for my size as I have a powerlifting total of 1335 lbs. Not trying to brag, just trying to show that I know what I’m doing. So this mom came up to me and said that she heard I’m a good physical fitness trainer. Told me that she wanted me to help her son get bigger and stronger for football. I told her that I would be happy to and we set up a schedule and how she would pay me. So I meet her son called S a few days later. He’s a really skinny kid. I start him training him and teaching him proper, simple form. Have him doing squats, deadlifts, bench press, push press, pull ups, rows, etc. I oversee everything he does and have him on a good, simple progression plan. But I make sure always to tell him that he needs to be in a caloric surplus or else he really do t make much strength and size gains. Of course like a lot of skinny people I train, he does not take this part too seriously. So after a few months of working with him he really hasn’t gained much size. He’s gotten a bit stronger but not much. Of course his mom has a problem with this.

She meets me one day and asks me how come S hasn’t gotten much bigger. I tell her that it’s must likely because he isn’t eating enough. She tells me that he is eating a lot. I tell her that they are probably overestimating how much he eats and I tell them a lot of skinny kids have that problem. She doesn’t believe me. She starts accusing me of not knowing what I’m doing and stealing her money. She even tells me”What does some little guy like you know about getting bigger and stronger huh?” So I reply to her”I know quite a bit about this stuff. Maybe S just has shitty genetics? That would be your fault, not mine.” This makes her furious and she goes off on me. She makes a complaint at the front desk and storms off. I never see her again. And S stops coming to me unfortunately. The gym owner tells me I’m not in trouble but to not make smart ass remarks at the clients.

I leave it alone but I feel like I was in the right. She insulted me so I insulted her back. Am I wrong? AITA?
