Hi there. I live in a developing country and I need to gather evidence for a legal case. I am an ordinary person without training in law or the criminal justice system so I am looking for a software to gather evidence and then present it myself/pro se. I cannot go into details here but I am looking for a free software/software suite for:
Recording entire webpages
Recording entire Facebook groups and all the posts, the likes on the posts and the replies of commenters.
Recording videos from Facebook groups, websites, Youtube etc
Digitizing documents at high resolution. Its better if I don't need to scan it, since I don't have a scanner and scanning will have to be done from a CyberCafe and they might secretly record it. The scanned/photo files need to be of a resolution such that the age of the document and other characteristics can be determined.
The above processes needs to be such that there is a clear chain of evidence, a time and datestamp and other things (I don't know much about law) such that the evidence holds up perfectly in court without question.
>Free software, software libre, or libre software is computer software that gives users the freedom to run the software for any purpose as well as to study, change, and distribute the software and the adapted versions.
7 years ago I discovered GNU/Linux with Ubuntu and I fell in love with it because it makes me feel absolutely free. A few months later I uninstalled Windows and used just GNU/Linux. With time I started to discover about free software and it's incredible community.
Why am I saying this? because I'd like to share my experience with you and aim you from a minimalist side to try it if you don't.
On my Android device I use F-Droid. Nothing from Google. So I can totally trust this software and I have what I need. No adds, no spyware, no one controlling what I use or not except me. (see r/privacy)
Since it's a relatively new software centre it has almost no games to be distracted nor anything like this. Again, it has what I use and need and gives me a great sensation of freedom.
Just for the record I have ~25 apps including mail, web browser, launcher, IM, Reddit app, notes apps, calendar, file manager, PDF viewer, translator, cloud, ...
Anyone here is enjoying it? if you don't, you can accept the challenge and try it :)
Here are some of them the came to my mind:
Are there any others? Do you disagree with any of them?

I have been working on this since august as i was laid off due to covid. Still continuing to do it with some friends.
I am thinking of adding a sort feature moving ahead. Apart from that, If there is any more feedback, do share. :)
Thanks.
I have heard many people talking about the Raspberry Pi in unfavourable terms because of its need of several closed-source binary blobs.
What are the non-free components of the Pi, what do they do and how many of them can be removed?
What is your opinion on the state of the Raspberry Pi in 2020?

I will make this thread into providing alternate Open/Free softwares to commonly used commercial softwares. Please feel free to add your list. I will also add that I'm not a fan of google for privacy reasons, so I avoid them as much as I can as Covid.
Feel free to add your list and thanks.

I want to eventually make robot parts using a 3d-printer and want to be able to do things like putting screw holes and such for say, mounting an arduino to a 3d printed piece of plastic, in precise spots on the piece of plastic so it all fits nicely. What FREE CAD software would be best for this?
PS. I'm brand new to CAD, I have a novice background in CS.
Libre software can exist because individuals contribute knowledge, time and/or money to projects they want to exist.
Since most of the posts on this sub seem to be application requests, how do you contribute to the ecosystem?
I'll start. I do:
I'm not going to do amazing things, maybe some amvs or stupid edits like ytpoop.
Hello,
I'm looking for server software for my new upcoming server, and I've only been able to find Tuinity and Yatopia so far, both good, but maybe not good enough. Does anyone know any server software that is actually faster than Yatopia? I heard someone say there is in fact way faster software but that's all I know.
So I'm in a bit of a dilemma...
A few months ago I had to move twice. Once with my mother and a second time with my father. I also ran a Minecraft server for my friends from my dad's. Unfortunately with the two moves I've been kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to server hosting. I'd either have to host it from a place where I don't have any control over port forwarding or I'd have to host it from a hotspot which barely gives me enough data for my needs over the weekends per month.
I decided to go for the place where I have no control over the network. I asked the landlord if he could set the IP for port forwarding and he did but i think I made a pretty big mistake when I did. I asked to set the IP to 192.168.0.62 without realising that everything on the network is 192.168.1.X. The network thing does not have UPnP I believe and when I try changing the wireless card's IP from the automatically set IP to even something on the same subnet it won't even get any websites loading.
So here are my options...
Bother the landlord to change the port forwarded IP to the wireless card's IP and bother him probably a few times when it doesn't work. Being a very shy person this isn't something I want to do.
Try to figure out how to do it on Windows's end and see if i get anything. (probably not)
Host the server through a service like Hamachi or remote.it. Again, something I'd rather not do as me and my servermates have unanimously agreed that having clientside software would be a huge hassle.
Try to find an alternative method.
Notes: I am an 18 year old with a monthly income of $0 so using some online host isn't an option.
While we could use something like aternos to host the server for free, my friends have agreed that most free server hosts are absolute trash when it comes to hosting.
The network admin will not give me the passwords. With how much the network managing controls give you I don't necesssarily blame him.
Anyway. I was really hoping that I could run a server for free without portforwarding or making the players install any software to connect to it. I'm okay with installing software on the serverside though.
EDIT: I found a decent tunneling software with playit.gg. shoutouts to whoever reccomended it
Hi all,
does anybody have any recommendations on some free or open source network inventory tools? I have used LanSweeper in the past, seemed to do everything I needed - I gave it a subnet, told it to 'scan', and I'm assuming it did a mixture of ping sweep, SNMP and other Windows based stuff to detect assets.
At the very least I'm after something that will give me an inventory or 'live' IP addresses and MAC addresses. Any additional info (device type etc) would be beneficial as well.
Thanks in advance
In December 2015 I moved from Toronto (Canada) to Paris (France) to work for XWiki SAS, a French tech company that employs about 40 people developing open-source knowledge management software. I did so to work on CryptPad, though it was only a proof-of-concept at the time. Since then the project has grown from a novel prototype developed part-time by XWiki's research department into a full platform employing three full-time developers.
Our award-winning team is responsible for every aspect of running a sustainable software project: its design, implementation, maintenance, market research, promotion, sales, and support. We host CryptPad.fr (the flagship instance), but unlike many commercial "privacy products", our code is fully open-source and is used to run around 500 third-party instances in the wild. We operate without relying on venture capital and have gotten this far by supplementing our revenue with funds from sponsored development, research projects, grants, and donations.
So far we've developed a variety of multi-user editors, accounts with document management via a drive, encrypted file upload, and social functionality with contact requests and teams.
Our current work is funded by two branches of the European Commission's Next Generation Internet initiative. NLnet foundation's NGI Zero PET (Privacy Enhancing Technologies) is backing our CryptPad for Communities project, in which we've aimed to improve usability, implement some highly requested features, and improve our documentation.
Our NGI TRUST project (Secure Mobile Collaboration) started as an exploration of mobile and desktop technologies, but is culminating in the integration of some modern web technologies that will allow users to load cached pages and encrypted content to improve performance while on the go and view documents even while entirely offline.
In early 2021 we're going to start working on our third NLnet PET project which will include the reimplemenation of our existing poll application and the introduction of a new encrypted forms app largely motivated by
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hi, First of all, this is my first post ever on Reddit, so it turns out I am completely burned out at my current job, I am the IT manager of what was supposed to be a small restaurant chain (never believe an owner when they say it's not going to grow.) allegedly it was just going to be 2 restaurants and one small distribution warehouse, 70 employees top and assets and software according to that, fast forward to 6 months and we already have 5 restaurants and the wee warehouse became a full-fledged distribution point for the restaurants and a production center for some basic recipes we deliver (now I know, you must be thinking why is she talking about food and productions and all, is just for some context on the size of s***t I'm handling). we have about 300 people in the company and truth be said I'm way over my head with the IT I department. so... I am literally drowning in excel spreadsheets for asset management, network flows, drowning in support tickets for s**t like network cable broken in loc1, scanner not scanning in location 2, we need to implement requisitions and purchase orders for the software of the production center and warehouse, keep buying laptops and peripherals for the new admin of location 3, network repair for the wireless LAN in location 4, etc etc, I think you get the picture.
Also, my crazy boss wants to open 3 more restaurants before March even though I specifically told him..like dude! stop I can't fucking handle this massive shite pile of work you are throwing at me without more people in the department, but he simply replied "due to corona times all new hirings are suspended"...so the thing is (yep finally to the point) I need to organize all the massive pile of excel and notes I have going around and especially handle the horrifying chaos I have with licensing and hardware going around.
I was googling and found Spiceworks and snipe it for asset management (and honestly, I liked snipe it dashboard so I might give it a try) but I need insight from people who have more experience dealing with this kind of one person team suicide scenario.
sorry for the crude English, is not my first language, so I kindly ask you all to try to ignore any horrible misspelling or grammatical murder I might have committed.
tl;dr: drowning in excel spreadsheets need to handle the IT department more professionally, requesting software recommendations.

The Augur is full of features to aid you in your solo roleplaying. Character mechanics that allow you to roll your stats with ease. A system to keep track of quests, vows and bonds. A combat window that lets you concentrate on how the fight unfolds. Foes with evocative images and descriptions as well as the assets and moves from the Ironsworn rulebook.
A fully realized journaling system to keep track of your adventures, you can even add images to your journal. A new and modern user interface so you can fully immerse yourself in the story.
And now a mapping system that allows you to load any image as new maps; add foes and sites (with their own maps) directly into it, thus creating a very graphic medium to envision your story. The Augur is based on the Ironsworn RPG.
Check it out! I am so excited to share this with everyone.
In know that RSLogix 500 is old and kinda deprecated. I was told to avoid CCW and I can't find a trial copy of Studio 5000 anywhere. Even my local rep pointed me to CCW when I asked.
What are local colleges teaching on these days?
I was trying to use freecad, but I'm concerned its not in a state I can reliably send data to tooling suppliers.
I somewhat want to stay away from the big dogs as their aggressive pricing is concerning.
Only other thought is that I'll be DIY-ing 'A surface'/visual work. (or at least doing my best before outsourcing to a professional freelancer)
Suggestions on software? Stick with FreeCAD? Play with the big dogs Fusion 360? Anything else?

^(MODS:) ^(Please don't take this as promotional. I'm not making any money off of this and I'm not trying to get any sort of recognition. Please don't let the fact that I coded it, rather than simply posting it as a link to a helpful resource, be misinterpreted as self-promotion.)
Over the last few months I've coded a Windows program that allows you to select a key and scale, display the appropriate notes on a fretboard and keyboard, display common chord progressions, and generate tabs for the scales or chords. It also has a chord finder for 55 popular chords (aug, sus, maj, min, dim, etc, and a bunch of weird ones no one ever uses.) The fretboard can be tuned, and number of strings changed. You can also set transparency and "stay on top" options for each Window, if you want to have it floating over your DAW of choice. You can also expand and collapse some of the windows, as well as minimize those not in use. Your settings will be remembered each time you use the program.
You've probably seen similar things on webpages. This has it all neatly wrapped in to a small, easy to use application that doesn't hog near as much memory/system resources as a web browser. The interface isn't super user friendly, but you should be able to figure it out. There are a handful of options, and not everything has been mistake proofed, so if you try hard enough you might crash the program. Yeet.
Feel free to use it - or not - and if you have any recommendations or requests, let me know and I'll see if I can implement them.
It's open source and free. And always will be.
^(It was coded in Visual Studio 2019 using Visual Basic.)

... keep reading on reddit β‘Hello everybody,
I am a big fan of this group and would like to thank you for the content of this group. I could learn a lot from this.
In my spare time I like to program free software for print-on-demand and e-commerce. You can find my current project at https://www.redezium.com/
The following tools have just been released:
A keyword tool for Amazon, Ebay and Spreadshirt including expected search volume, a couple of impression tools to find new design ideas and a couple of trademark checker tools to make a comparison with relevant offices.
The aim is to build free tools to improve my programming skills and to offer both me and the users a cool research opportunity.
Unfortunately, I cannot find any new project ideas at the moment and would like to ask this group for suggestions and ideas for new tools, at best not yet available for free.
Do you have any wishes, ideas or suggestions for new tools? I would like to hear your opinion on this. Thanks in advance
When installing new software, do you want it to be free software? Do you install other non-free programs if you can't find what you are looking for? Do you care as long as it works?
Vote and give your opinion.
Thank you.

My rationale is that these games were made back in a time when they just went into the console, with no ability to do anything malicious as they were for an anonymous console.
While they aren't free software, it would seem that they are 100% harmless as long as a free software program is used to run them.
Thoughts?
There are heaps of inefficiencies that nobody even notices they're putting up with. Given our nature for finding the best way to do things, I'm sure we've all found some gems that most people wouldn't even think to search for! Here are some of mine:
Gadwin Printscreen is really useful. It adds Ctrl+PrtScr as a shortkey for copying only a selection instead of your whole screen. Upon fixing the area of your selection box, you can press enter to save it directly or ctrl+C to copy it. For saving, you can set up an automatic naming-scheme and destination folder so that you don't even need to go through any additional windows.
Skybn Copy Recorder is helpful for being able to store multiple copied items in a clipboard library.
Anti Adblock Detector is a really handy extension for circumventing "Please Disable Adblocker to proceed" windows
Stickies by Zhorn is my favorite stickynote app. Very minimalist aesthetic and highly customizable settings. Also you can set alarms
I just started on youtube and I'm looking for a free video editing software. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just enough to make basic cuts and effects.
Looking for Discord in the repos, I was surprised to see that it is offered in the official repos and not in AUR (even though, predictably, AUR hosts various other builds):
Here's Arch official community/discord
package, a 50MB (110MB installed) binary blob of the official app, with its own separate Electron runtime, and the JS app bundled in an app.asar
.
https://dl.discordapp.net/apps/linux/$pkgver/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz
I did not know this was possible, I always assumed the repos only contained free / open-source (obviously, I didn't think about it very much, being a user of linux-firmware
since forever). I personally think that's great (from a proprietary-software-tolerant end-user perspective), but that's not my question. My questions are:
Cc u/ArchFFY00 , who's involved in all these packages, and whose work I'm super grateful for π.
Thanks.
what is the best free video editing software? im a complete beginner with basic understanding of photo editing software like gimp, but wanna get into video as well
