Is CAN a contributor on the first track of SFFB?

Genius lists CAN, the incredibly influential German krautrock avant-garde band as being featured on Foreword , the first track of the new album. Did Genius cite the wrong CAN or something. Seems like an odd match, though really cool if it is true. Anyone got a second source beside genius?

V: The Quintessential Human (AKA my character analysis of V)

FOREWORD

So this is just something that I wrote up because I had too many thoughts about V and how he accurately depicts the human experience. I don't consider myself to be good at analysis or anything like that, so this isn't "formal" by any means. I just wanted to put down my thoughts on a well-written character and show some of why I love him so much. Hopefully I can get my ideas across in a way that's at least semi-comprehensible. I've used evidence from the canon Visions of V manga and DMC5 to support my points. This is going to be a long analysis, too, so apologies in advance. The main topics I address will each have their own section, marked by a bolded heading. Now without further ado, here we go.

Duality of human nature

V’s whole character, as stated by Itsuno, is meant to represent “humans with both good and bad intentions.” Humans, in essence, have the capacity for both good and evil within them, so already V embodies this dual nature. We see this demonstrated in many of his actions and motivations. For example, he manipulates Dante and Nero in order to defeat Urizen (evil), but he genuinely wants to fix his mistakes (good); he cruelly maims a bunch of mobsters (evil), but in doing so saves a woman and also returns the necklace her mother left her (good); and he initially watches impassively as a bunch of humans die from the Qliphoth roots (evil) but eventually starts saving them despite his dwindling power (good). V, much like humans themselves, is complex, and this is very fitting considering that he is Vergil’s literal humanity.

Human frailty and the spirit of human perseverance

After being separated from Vergil, V is left to crumble and die. And yet he doesn’t want to, and this refusal to die summons Griffon to his side to allow him to prolong his death. Throughout his journey, V suffers basic physiological and societal problems which plague humanity: fatigue, hunger, poverty, and general powerlessness. This frailty sets him apart from a lot of other characters— how many times have you seen the protagonist of a story collapse from sheer exhaustion and malnutrition? Even the mere act of talking tires him out (according to his voice actor, Brian Hanford). But despite all of this, V endures. As the lyrics of his battle theme, “Crimson Cloud,” say, he “summons his power” and “drags himself through pain.” Every battle is literally a “fight for his life.” He

Your 3 favourite songs from each album ?

Mine:

Entropia

One of my very favourite album ever, hard to pick just a few songs out of the album that made me fall in love with PoS (along with Scarsick)

! (Foreword). Such a fantastic opening track. Was hooked the first time I heard it.

People Passing By. Incredible song. So beautiful. Its solo at the end is probably my favourite solo ever (Child in Time and Drive Home come close)

Leaving Entropia (Epilogue). I absolutely love Daniel's singing here. So raw, so emotional.

Special mentions to Stress and Nightmist.

OHBTCL

Quite possibly my least favourite PoS album (or RS1), yet I still love that album. My "issue" with it is that no track stand out (in terms of preference) which makes it really hard to pick a song here

Here, I'll go with the Handfull of Nothing/Water/Home suite. The songs flow greatly into one another and are heavy in the right way.

Inside, New Year's Eve, Pilgrim and Inside Out come very close.

TPE, part I

It took me quite some time, but I grew to love this album so much, possibly my favourite PoS album. It will always be so hard to pick songs, won't it ?

Morning On Earth. I've always loved soft PoS songs, and this is one of their very best, and I relate to its lyrics a lot.

Dedication. Another incredibly beautiful soft song.

Falling/The Perfect Element. Simply put, probably their best closing track imo, despite the very serious competition.

Idioglossia, Her Voices, King of Loss and Song for the Innocent are all amazing songs that I had to mention.

Remedy Lane

The very first PoS album I've listened to. Undertow was their first song I loved. Such a great album

This Heart of Mine (I Pledge). A simple beautiful song, but I relate a lot to it.

Rope Ends. Do I need to say more ? Such a gut-wrenching song.

Chain Sling. Probably the best break-up song ever.

I also have to honor A Trace Of Blood, Undertow, Second Love and Beyond the Pale.

BE

Probably my favourite PoS album. Hardest to get into. The reward was incredible, however.

Dea Pecuniae. Incredible, weird track. I always was fascinated by it.

Vocari Dei. Very few songs moved me the way it did. So fucking beautiful.

Diffidentia. Another beautiful song. Another headbanger track. Killer song.

Of course, Iter Impius and Martius/Nauticus II are just as incredible and beautiful.

Scarsick

An amazing album, I never understood the backlash it received (same for their other albums though). Fantastic album through and through.

Scarsick. Another amazing opening

WGTOW Bookclub: October: Vote for a book

Welcome to our very first book club poll. Below are some of the amazing suggestions from our members, as well as some other books I found in the search. I've added a short description for each (mostly copied from Wikipedia, amazon and other sources). Please read the description and then choose an option you want to read for October. The poll will be up for 3 days. The most voted book will be chosen. Other popular books will be added again to next month's bookclub poll. The discussion thread will be up about mid October, which gives us about 2 weeks to read the book. Of course later additions to the discussion are welcome, as well. We're a bit late this month, I will post the suggestion thread for next month's book a bit earlier.

Paid For: My Journey through Prostitution

Born into a troubled family, Rachel Moran left home at the age of fourteen. Being homeless, she was driven into prostitution to survive. With intelligence and empathy, she describes the exploitation she and others endured on the streets and in the brothels. Moran also speaks to the psychological damage inherent to prostitution and the inevitable estrangement from one’s body. At twenty-two, Moran escaped the sex trade. She has since become a writer and an abolitionist activist.

Black Macho and the Myth of the Super Woman

Originally published in 1978, this book caused a storm of controversy as Michele Wallace blasted the masculinist bias of the black politics that emerged from the sixties. She described how women remained marginalized by the patriarchal culture of Black Power and the ways in which a genuine female subjectivity was blocked by the traditional myths of black womanhood.

A Woman is No Man

In her debut novel Etaf Rum tells the story of three generations of Palestinian-American women struggling to express their individual desires within the confines of their Arab culture in the wake of shocking intimate violence in their community—a story of culture and honor, secrets and betrayals, love and violence. Set in an America at once foreign to many and staggeringly close at hand, A Woman Is No Man is an intimate glimpse into a controlling and closed cultural world, and a universal tale about family and the ways silence and shame can destroy those we have sworn to protect.

Keepers of the Faith - A novel on Dawoodi Bohras, the first of its kind

Keepers of the Faith: This new novel is a must-read. It is a story of blind faith and of a ruthless clergy that destroy lives and relationships.

Ismail K Poonawala has written a Foreword for the book.

The book is published in Canada by Mawenzi House and can be purchased from the following outlets:

Reviews

"Keepers of the Faith is an inspiring and provocative novel. Ajmeri deserves full credit for his lucid style and thoughtful and philosophical reflections over the bewildering events that unfold. All the scenes vividly narrated come alive before the readers' eyes like a beautiful tableau painted by a skilful master painter. In my view, Keepers of the Faith should be read by all Momins conversant with English. It is hoped that soon the novel will be translated into Urdu, Gujarati and Hindi and other languages so that inquisitive readers all around the globe can also enjoy this masterpiece."

- Ismail K. Poonawala, Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles

“Keepers of the Faith is a beautifully written novel that situates a moving personal story against the backdrop of inter- and intra-communal tensions in modern India. The novel is at once a poignant love story as well as a trenchant exploration of the interplay between orthodoxy and Islamophobia at home and abroad. Written in a style that is at once accessible and often lyrical, redolent of memories and observations keenly made, the novel will prove a read that is both immersive and insightful.”

- Sumaiya Hamdani, an Associate Professor of History at George Mason University

My experience with Gravity Rush [Part 1]

#FOREWORD

It's hard to express just how much I love this series and how happy I am that I discovered it (completely by accident). The story starts off as this vague mystery in a bizarre world, which beckons you to explore it, and transforms into an adventure of epic proportions, with loveable characters, satisfying gameplay and shocking twists.

However, despite me seeing it as a masterpiece, it has it's issues both in story and gameplay. Thankfully, these don't take away (too much) from the overall experience. This series is also one of the extremely rare cases where I'll never get bored, no matter how many times I come back to it.

This essay will serve as a comprehensive review and a compilement of my thoughts on everything in this series from characters and story, to music and style direction. So, expect it to be LONG. Also, spoilers for everything. For example, when I talk about GR1, I will tackle plot-points from the second game. So, hopefully you’ve played all the games and DLC’s.

For something like this, a video would've been more appropriate. It would allow me to convey my thoughts, and show exactly what I'm reffering to, when describing things. But, it is what it is. I'm not familiar with how YouTube works nor how to edit videos. So, I'll try getting my points/observations across, this way, as best I can.

#GRAVITY RUSH 1

MUSIC

I just had to get this out of the way first. Kōhei Tanaka is a genius. From the very title screen, we're greeted by this superhero-esque theme [Gravity Daze], which then gets a bit of an orchestral, "fantasy" flavor. GR's soundtrack is simply amazing, different, entertaining and enticing. I never get bored of listening to it.

It seems to lean towards classical, Jazz-Rock and similiar genres of music (sometimes even leading to Mexican-sounding segments, like in the title theme). I mean, the recurring and dominant instruments are the trumpet, electric guitar, violin, acordian, saxophone, clarinet and piano (and many other, of course). All skillfully incorporated to create a unique and memorable soundtrack, which could almost rival that of Nier: Automata.

[I'll be discussing individual pieces of soundtrack as I go over the story]

APPEARANCE

The game oozes with style. The interface and GUI are filled with details, shapes and colors. The style is... well... old. And that's a good thing. It provides you with the exact same experience you'd have had on the PS-Vita, just a bit sharper. It looks/feels nostalgic,

I (25M) cannot let go of my anger about how my ex-bandmate (27M) and I treated each other for 10 years.

Foreword: this is really, really long and complicated (TL;DR at the bottom). I'll do my best to keep it as simple and digestible as I can. Any musicians out there will likely understand how complex band dynamics can be. This is a particularly lengthy and complicated situation from my perspective, so I will do everything in my power to clarify all aspects of it. I am struggling to move forward and I don't know any other resources that might be able to help. The relationship is largely over; we don't speak anymore except to wish each other happy birthday. I'm just so haunted by this and I don't know where else to turn.

So I was in a band for about 10 years with this guitar player. I'm a drummer and a vocalist, and for years, music was my dream. We met through local means and started a metal project together after a week of jamming (me on drums, him on guitar, and a few other members over this period), one in which he largely had creative control. He even had a name picked out for the band already. He had always gravitated towards being in the spotlight at the time - when the band started, he wanted to be the guitarist as well as frontman. He tried to do it but didn't have "it," and wasn't a very good singer as well. He also developed a passion for songwriting that gradually drifted closer and closer towards pop techniques. This would eventually become a rift between us.

There was a fundamental difference in the way that we both approached being in the band - at my core, I always wanted everything to be a collaborative approach. I always envisioned the sound of the band being a product of multiple people putting their unique musical voices together in a way that was authentic and, as I developed musically, served their shared vision of the music and how it made them feel. I also felt this way about collective band decisions, marketing, branding, etc. He was decidedly not that way at all; from the beginning through the end, he has always been a visionary and has always tried to approach everything about a creative project from the camp of "get a clear vision in your head and execute it," assuming I understand him correctly. To him, there was a clear set of rules to follow for the desired outcome, if you could figure them out. He would ultimately prove to me just how effective that approach could be.

A couple bits of important context here: first thing is that I'm the extreme stubborn-jackass type of person that cannot stand being told what to do in any way,

Used my time in quarantine to rank Linkin Park tracks

I had a lot of free time on my hands as I couldn't get an internship thanks to the corona virus, so I decided to rank the songs for several bands I like starting with Linkin Park. This is all my opinion, so please be respectful, but I would love to hear your thoughts on my list! I only ranked the full length albums and singles, not really a fan of remix albums, or live recordings of songs that exist outside the live recording. I went with what was available on apple music, so hopefully no songs are missing, but can't guarantee that everything is here.

1 CASTLE OF GLASS I remember listening to this song back when I still used YouTube to primarily listen to music. I have no personal experience with it, but the music video hit me hard when I first watched it, and that emotion carries through every time I listen to this song. Every part of this song is just awesome to me, the vocals, the music in the background, it just flies by. It's also a fun song to sing along to for me, and one of the songs I can get through without butchering parts of the lyrics.

2 Guilty All the Same Some might think this song is too long, but it takes you on a journey. The build up at the beginning for the first minute, the guitar for the next 30 seconds, then the vocals have their own build up to the chorus. The chorus on this song is definitely my favorite part, it is just really good and rockin'. The rap also fits really well into the song. The Hunting Party was my first Linkin Park album when the Google Play Store gave it out for free over a weekend over 6 years ago, and has a special place in my heart

3 Across the Line As a bonus track, this song has no right to be this good. I'm not even sure what I like so much about this song, it just makes my brain feel so good, I just can't help starting to sing along. The song also builds up throughout the song, which is always a plus for me. I also like Chester's 10 second scream at 2:00 a lot.

4 One Step Closer The first song I ever heard from Linkin Park, it definitely holds a special place in my heart. I just want to headbang along to it and sing along. It feels like it is over too soon when I get to the end. I like how it alternates between the normal singing, and then the "cause I'm one step closer to the edge and I'm about to break"s

5 Breaking the Habit Everything just flows from one awesome part to the next. The song just makes me want to tap my fingers along to the beat, almost hard to type out my thoughts w

SCP-1987: Clingy

Foreword: SCP-1987 is an oddity among the Foundation. We’re no stranger to multimedia projects, a few articles have embedded video or audio, and some of them are even full-on games (please read SCP-5500 I worked so hard on it) but SCP-1987, created by the user Dr. Yelast in 2013, is notable for being the only SCP that is hosted entirely on Youtube. I’m not kidding. The video only has a few *hundred* views, so I’m hoping to bring some attention to it with this.

Containment:

Class is Keter, not much to say there. Remember when we didn’t have billions of esoteric classes to contend with, not to mention all the bells and whistles headers? Good times.

The majority of this is going to be transcripts from the video, so it may be inaccurate.

>SCP-1987 is currently uncontainable, and is present on the World Wide Web, specifically at Youtube.Com/[REDACTED].

The redaction is my own-- the link just goes to the video itself, and I don’t want to confuse people. But yeah, shit, this thing is a video on Youtube.

>Containment of SCP-1987 is to focus on minimizing its spread, using tools embedded within Youtube’s infrastructure, such as the copyright claim and age gating systems.

What do you call foreshadowing if it’s happened in real life? That’s what this is.

>Due to SCP-1987's nature, it is inevitable that this video will contain some or all of this file-- to combat this, Protocol ARG-1987 is to be enacted.

I had only been on the wiki for about a year when this happened, but Dr. Yelast was planning for a full-on ARG with this, and this is the last extant reference to it-- no real-life component was involved, but he bought a domain at one point and everything. Then he got permanently banned for plagiarizing part of the short story about humans having the ability to remove their hearing at will by way of taking off their ears (I wish I remembered the name of that story, it was a trip).

Wiki drama aside, what is Protocol ARG-1987?

>Protocol ARG-1987 involves embedding of memetic phrases within the documentation for SCP-1987 to instill the belief in viewers that it is part of an ‘Alternate-Reality Game’. Subsequently, clues will be left in order to lead viewers to [REDACTED].com, where further memetic conditioning will ensure the transmission and subsequent neutralization of SCP-1987.

Again, redaction is my own-- the domain that Yelast was going to use made Malwayrebytes nearly crash my computer when I clicked on it. The original site

Meteora Tracklist Restructured

So I was listening to Linkin Park and I was thinking what if I rearranged their tracklist to make the album more lyrically cohesive, and tell a clear story throughout the album. And I did this with meteora. This is no disrespect to the original order of the album because I think that this album is amazing regardless.

Tracklist:

  1. Foreword
  2. Don’t Stay
  3. Lying From You
  4. Nobody’s Listening
  5. Hit The Floor
  6. Numb
  7. Faint
  8. Figure.09
  9. From The Inside
  10. Breaking The Habit
  11. Easier To Run
  12. Session
  13. Somewhere I Belong

I went with this order to give the album a more optimistic ending... Somewhere I Belong is a beautiful song and probably one of the best of the album and honestly it gave me “album closeing track” vibes. I also kept “Don’t Stay” because of the fact that it was initially a great way to open the album. I felt like I wanted the tracklist to go more in depth and tell a story. The continuing tracks kind of keep that anger and resentment that Don’t Stay presented us with. To slow things down a bit I put “Numb” so It can show how these feelings of resentment and anger made them feel. “Faint” and “F.09” are the halfway point of the album and it shows Chester and Mike fighting back this anger and taking themselves back. “From The Inside” and BTH are made the climax of the album to show that they’re willing to change and break away from what was troubling them in their life. From a lyrical standpoint I felt that this would make more sense if they were switched around. And of course, “Easier to Run”, and “Somewhere I Belong” reflect on the past actions of Chester and Mike and just have them looking towards the future and finding themselves. I put session in between cuz... it worked. In the end, this tracklisting was able to tell a complete story and give a satisfying ending. But I was just really bored when I made this. Tell me what you all think of this order, is it better than the original or will nothing top it?

New to Kid Cudi’s Music- Words Can’t Describe How Much I Love the Guitar in Alive (Nightmare)

At least I think it’s a guitar. I have no technical music knowledge but whatever the instrument is that sort of whines when he says “every time” is one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard. Something about it.

Currently working my way through his whole discography after only listening to some of his popular hits intermittently over the last several years, but I’m stuck on MOTM because I’ve been playing it on repeat for the past week and it’s too good to make myself stop. Like the title says I’m particularly vibing with Alive, as well as Heart of a Lion, My World, Soundtrack 2 My Life, Day ‘N’ Night, and Up Up and Away, but really the album has no weak songs to me and I love them all.

Never before have I so strongly had the desire to speak with an artist and shake their hand or something just to thank them for putting something so great out into the world for the rest of us to enjoy. I mean this is some of the realest, deepest lyrical work paired with some of the cleanest, best-sounding vocals and beats I’ve heard in my life. The last time I had this feeling when discovering an artist, they became my favorite of all time. Pretty sure Cudi is about to take that spot.

I’m shocked that I haven’t taken the time to get to know him better before now, he seems like everything I have ever wanted in a musician. And sorry idk if you guys like this type of post but Kid Cudi has just rejuvenated my thirst for music and I feel the need to tell people who’ll really understand. I’m really looking foreword to hearing the rest of his stuff as soon as I can tear myself away from MOTM.

I feel Till - My first try to do a more or less detailed analysis of the whole thing. (pretty long to read)

As already mentioned on another post - I am a long time Rammstein, Till Lindemann (speaking about his persona as well as poems as well as other work) and Lindemann (band) fan. This time I just to share my opinion/ sight on Till Lindemann/ his work on F&M, the concept, influences, etc.

I decided to do that not to defend him but to share my sight on the whole topic as I am a real hardcore fan but also like to think a lot about stuff and write over it as well.

So that means that it's MY PERSONAL OPINION, so don't expect just objective facts. It is for sure biased and quite long to read, so if you are interested, take your time.

Maybe this is completely trashed now as we got the thread of u/tillth3end giving some background impressions of the shoot.

I am not sure if this is complete but I don’t think so – so I marked it as my first try to dive into the depths of the topic.

Jumping right into medias res. Before starting with my interpretation, I would like to introduce you to the "material" I used to do it (besides my brain - if that counts). I would like to mention that I read a lot about Till Lindemann, watched basically every interview, read his poems. So, this will be part of my interpretation. Furthermore, I would like to say that I read a lot of opinions in that subreddit, which really made me think about the whole topic again and again. One last thing before I come to my points: all of this has barley anything to do with Rammstein; this is just about Till Lindemann and the same-named band.

What is important in this whole debate?

  • The background of F&M (origin of writing/ why you write music in general
  • The texts of F&M
  • The videos of F&M (including "Till the end")
  • The character of Mr Lindemann himself / Interviews of him
  • His book "In stillen Nächten"

So, as I already thought and what got confirmed by the posts of u/QueenCobra91 / by Zoran Bihac himself, that everything belongs together/ tell one story. But I want to get in there with more details, so let’s get started.

Is there really a story /if so- what does the story tell?

According to quite some opinions on this subreddit, we just see the midlife crisis of a 57 yo man, who can't stand that constantly ageing process he has to face every day, so he does shoot MV to point out how attractive he still is. On the other hand, some people argue that this is still art and the reason why they like (Till) L

Quotes from songs #4: "In Too Deep" by Genesis

Foreword:

I want to make this series daily. If anyone is interested in doing his own version of it feel free to do.

The song:

The song "In Too Deep" was published in 1986 on the 13th album of the band "Genesis". It is the 4th track on it and can be found as the last title on the first side of the vinyl record.

The lyrics were written by Phil Collins. He wrote it originally for the film "Mona Lisa".

The song is about a man who is loosing the connection to a loved one.

The music video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6f2vyeO8Hs

Tony Banks plays the piano.

Mike Rutherford plays the guitar.

Phil Collins plays the drums and sings the vocals.

The quotes:

Following quote reminds of Clem thinking about her situation when she was left without Lee:

"All that time I was searching with nowhere to run to
It started me thinking
Wondering what I could make of my life
And who'd be waiting
Asking all kinds of questions to myself
But never finding the answers

Crying at the top of my voice
And no one listening
All this time, I still remember everything you said, oho
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget"

The refrain could be Clems thoughts before >!shooting!< Lee:

"Listen, you know I love you, but I just can't take this
You know I love you, but I'm playing for keeps
Although I need you, I'm not gonna make this
You know I want to, but I'm in too deep "

This could be Lee thinking about if >!kicking Lilly out!< was a good idea:

" Ooh, I know you're going but I can't believe
It's the way that you're leaving
It's like we never knew each other at all
It may be my fault "

Lee before he met Clem:

" It seems I've spent too long
Only thinking about myself, oho
Now I want to spend my life
Just caring 'bout somebody else "

final word:

That was quiete a lot quotes if you compare it to the other posts xD. That's for today. Hope you appreciate :) .

I recently discovered that on Jonathan Geer's Bandcamp, songs which had lyrics in them - in English or otherwise - now had official lyrics. I decided to translate some of these songs and share them here with anyone who may be interested, after posting a few of my translations in the CSD Discord.

Foreword

First, credit where credit is due. When I asked him about it, Jonathan Geer told me that A La Idavay is written / sung in Spanish with Pig Latin applied to it, so I can't say I figured that out on my own. Furthermore, I have to thank a member of the CSD Discord server, Alan, for revealing the "cipher" for the rest of the songs, and for providing a translation for Mufuchofo Gufustofo!

Lastly, I would like to make it known that I am by no means a fluent speaker of Spanish. All I did was do some very basic "deciphering" after learning the keys and then slapping the deciphered text into Google translate. So if any lyrics aren't exactly right, please know that Google translate is not perfect, and neither am I.

I decided to put both versions of each song in this post - so I apologize for how lengthy this post will end up being - but it covers both Spanish and English versions of each of the songs. It didn't feel right to me to only include English lyrics, since the songs were initially written in Spanish; despite the encryption, that is.

So without further ado, here are the deciphered and translated lyrics, in order of how they appear in the album:

Polish/Russian Stalker books and the issue with the blatant lack of an English translation.

I'm Polish.

In Poland we have a pretty... prominent stalker following. Like, I didn't expect this universe to be so popular among my kind. I sort of understand Russia/Ukraine, but not so much Poland, but apparently that is the case.

I'm extremely fortunate to have been able to read these books, written by a Polish author, Michał Gołkowski. He is a Polish/Russian/English translator by trade. I feel like he may have started this, stalker universe books trend, because soon after, some Russian authors also started writing those books, and Mr. Gołkowski, the absolute Chad that he is, translated those Russian Stalker books into Polish... but not English.

So far I have not been able to find any English translation of this treasure trove of books.

But not all hope is lost. Though this is a monumental task, I'm sure somebody will show up, who speaks Polish, English, and Russian, who will kindly translate them sooner or later... right?

Somebody?

Anybody?

W-what are you looking at me for?

Oh fine.

That being said. I would like to first ask if this... suicidal task is even worth attempting. Would anybody be interested in reading these amazing books, translated poorly by yours truly?

I can't guarantee I'll be able to do it very consistently. and it might be too much for me, but I am willing to give it a shot, unless I am literally doing it for just myself.

The following is a translation of a poem/song lyrics that appear as a foreword to the first stalker book, "Lead Dawn" by Michał Gołkowski. The song was written by Jacek Kaczmarski. I apologize for how clunky it reads. Polish poetry is notoriously difficulty to properly convey in a Germanic language, due to the extreme liberties these writers usually take with the grammar structure. I hope you at least like it. I am interested in continuing this in some way, but translation has a tendency to seem easy at first, but when you sit down to do it, it eats up your time like no other task ever will. You will often spend 4 hours translating 3 pages, which is no way to live a life where I only have about 6 hours of free time a day. Anyway, Hope you at least enjoy the poem. I'll update if I make any further progress.

This is the link to the document on googledocs that I will likely use for this project, if I do end up sitting down to do it. So far, I only have a sample of the opening poem.

A couple of questions about the liner notes in the 'Part...' compilation (specifically, Michael's).

1 - On "New Test Leper": "it is, however, the song i think of when people who wrote maybe 4 good songs get big heads [britpop, anyone?]. i always feel like when they write a "new test leper" then i will listen to them." Was he perhaps taking the piss out of Oasis? I know I can exclude Pulp, because Mr. Stipe name-dropped Jarvis Cocker in a foreword to "The A To X of Alternative Music" book as one of the people who push/stimulate him to make better lyrics and tunes, so I assume he respected the heck out of Pulp (I could see him not liking the Gallagher brothers one bit, on the other hand). Ironically enough, that book has, besides R.E.M. and Pulp, an entry on Oasis (and Blur, while we're at it). Then again, Pulp were always a bit outside of the britpop label (particularly in their last two albums, which went against the prevailing moods of the time).

2 - On "Living Well Is The Best Revenge": "i tore into this vocal because someone who i really really admired forever, kind of publically bad mouthed r.e.m., and I was like, "f*** you! sing like this, you talented f***. it felt so good and sounded so great we just left it as it is. i will never tell who it was but his initials are ----- --------." Who do you think he was referring to?

Potential p5r anime

TLDR at bottom. Trust me you’ll want it. So this post is probably pointless and the anime may or may not already be months into making, but still, I wanted to share my thoughts. So as we all know, the original anime was really bad. It failed on animation, storytelling, character development, and overall was just horribly mediocre. Another point is that it is pointless. There was nothing the anime gave us that the game hadn’t already done a hundred times better. Soooooooo, I was thinking about what a potential Royal anime could do better than the original. Keep in mind that I haven’t played Royal yet; I’m writing this with my bare minimum knowledge of Royal, and having played p5, obviously.

Okay, so what could Royals anime do that the original couldn’t? The original barely had enough time to fit in the 100 hours of gameplay into one series, so how would Royal fit in the extra 30 hours? Well in p4g anime, they skilled a lot of main story beats in favor of Marie’s story, I think Royal should do this too. However, I don’t think the focus should exclusively be on Kasumi, rather, and hear me out here, I think much more focus should be on Ren (and more later on why I think Jokers name in this anime should by Ren again). By focus, I mean that I want Ren explored more as a character. In the anime, he really was a cardboard cutout, save for a few moments. I don’t know about the manga, but, and correct me if I’m wrong, I think it’s non-canonical, and is more for fun than anything.

So why Ren? It’s impossible to argue if Ren or Akira is more or less canon. So there’s no point in trying to tell you that one is more canonical than the other. And whether or not you like the name Ren or Akira more is preference, so that’s not an argument point. The reason I think his name should be Ren is because it is softer sounding than Akira. Allow me to explain why this is desirable. People prefer Akira because it’s sharper, it fits their idea of the character better. But I propose we don’t go with the quiet, calm, collected protagonist. Mostly because we got that in P4, and even 3 a little. So Ren makes much more sense for a character that isn’t just a less Chad version of Yu Narukami.

So that begs the question, what should Ren’s personality be? Awkward. I have a reason, I promise. So I think Ren should be incredibly awkward, introverted, quiet, etc. I feel like the game hints at this a little too. Mostly in Ren’s glasses, which, of you don’t know, are fake. He started wearing th

Thoughts on this alternative Reputation tracklist?

I was inspired to try this by seeing several posts on r/popheads with users rearranging album tracklists so as to make them flow better, which always seemed like a weird idea to me until I actually gave it a shot and discovered it's pretty fun. I thought I'd take up the challenge of reordering someone else's finished body of work and I started with reputation. This is what I came up with, so tell me what you guys think.

Some context before we get into it: I often see fans online pointing out that while Taylor's albums are consistently strong, they're sometimes held back by the way the tracks are ordered. It seems to be a consensus among the fanbase that Red's tracklist in particular is all over the place, with some pretty jarring transitions from upbeat to downbeat tracks, especially in the first half (that stretch from Treacherous to WANEGBT is a roller coaster of down-up-down-up-down-up in quick succession). reputation's ordering doesn't have quite as many instances of tonal whiplash (the jump from Delicate to LWYMMD is the only one that stands out to me), but I do think it stands to gain more from being rearranged because (1) I'm team Red all the way and I've come to appreciate the weird sequencing as part of its charm, and (2) the way the reputation tracks are ordered detracts from its general mission statement.

Let me explain. From the foreword in the booklet and the interviews that Taylor's been giving during the Lover promo cycle, one can gauge that reputation was meant as a bait-and-switch act (I'm pretty sure she used that expression herself): it was written and released during a chaotic moment for her, in which her public image took a significant hit but she found peace and bliss in her personal life. With that in mind, reputation attempted to explore the dichotomy between Taylor Swift the persona that's been constructed in the public sphere over the years (informed both by how she presents herself to her audience and by the things that get written about her in the press and on social media), and Taylor Swift the private individual whom we do not have access to. That's the album cover right there: one half covered in newspaper headlines, and the other completely clean. That's the duality that she set out to explore with this record, and which is summed up in the foreword:

>We think we know someone, but the truth is that we only know the version of them that they have chosen to show us.

That brings us back to the concept o

First First Date Date Mashup Poem

Foreword:

Hey guys. I am an English Literature Student in Australia and for a recent assignment I was required to create a mashup poem using lines/lyrics from two other texts. After my lecturer said "have fun with this one" I decided to create a mashup of First Date by NSP and First Date by Blink-182. I'm aware it's pretty bad but I thought you guys might like it :)

Hey pretty lady when you smile I melt inside. Let’s go. Don't wait. You’re looking real fine. I’m not like other guys. This is our first date and I just can’t wait. Is it wrong if I hold your hand and get some coffee? Do you like this really nice flower exhibit at the botanical gardens? We can hold hands. You make me nervous. I dread the thought of going a little more traditional. I’m just scared of what you’ll think. Let’s break a couple of rules tonight. Sneak in a movie, is it wrong? No one will ever know. Let’s make it last and run on private property. Then share a cherry cola while we have our very first kiss. We’re holding hands and I'm probably going to miss. Let’s go. Don’t wait. This night’s almost over, honest, let’s steal a car tonight! Commit a felony and look at me with those eyes. Please don’t hint that you’re incapable of some crimes. We’re young and in love, so let’s make this night last forever. And ever. Let’s make this a sexy date heist? What’s a few Picassos when it’s only me and you in the room? Let’s steal some art and make it, crossing state lines. Or, you know, we could go for a dance and talk about my stupid hair? Do you think you could tell me about your family? I’m nervous so fuck it? I lean in and gently whisper in your ears Let’s commit some crimes tonight. I’m jealous of everyone’s perfect alibi. I’ll pick you up in my car and take you back to your place.

Good first date?

No?

This night’s over.

Basilisk Books' Best of 2019! My personal favorite new releases in the past year.

This post and others can be found on my book review blog, Black Forest Basilisks. The original post's content has been reformatted here for reddit in full.

Well, it's that time of year, isn't it? Time for all the Best Of and Top Ten lists to begin poking their heads out to herald in not just a new year, but a new decade. 2019 was one hell of a busy one for me, having started with a move across the country and some quite major changes in my personal life since then. Things are looking up, and I've met some wonderful new people who I hope will continue to be major parts of my life! It's been one for the books, if you will.

In very happy news, my blog was also nominated for the r/Fantasy Stabby Award! Unfortunately, I'm not eligible as I'm, y'know, a moderator here and one of the ones running the award. There's a very slight conflict of interest given that, so I've had to gracefully bow out of the running. That said, I strongly encourage everyone to go vote on the nominees!

This year, I was more than a little spoiled for good books and stories. There were very few new releases that I didn't at least enjoy reading this year. Here are some of the new books released in 2019 that stood out most to me during my reading.

BEST DEBUT NOVELS

------------------------------------------------

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

"She writes a door of blood and silver. The door opens just for her."

Of all the books I read this year, The Ten Thousand Doors of January is the one that I think will stick with me the most. This book worked for me, completely and utterly. This novel touched my heart, and I loved it unabashedly. Alix E. Harrow filled me with a wistful nostalgia for a past I never had, for people I never met, and hope for a future filled with stories I'll never read.

January Scaller is a young girl growing up in the early 1900s. She’s leashed and tamed by a man who thinks of her as just another curio in his collection – but when her father goes missing, she’s forced to confront both her abilities and her past. This is a coming of age novel, a novel about exploring both this world and others, and a novel about lost souls seeking one another out through the ten thousand Doors between worlds.

A Guide to Progressive Sludge/Post-Metal

Foreword:

Hello and welcome to this guide to the genres known as post-metal and progressive sludge. It will feature the history of the essentials bands that formed the genres, and also the bands that carry the genres forward today. While prog sludge and post-metal are two different genres they still have a lot in common. First of all most post-metal bands incorporates sludgy elements to their music and the genre is sometimes even called Atmospheric Sludge instead. Therefore it made sense to make a list that covered both. However, this list is only focused on bands that play progressive post-metal/sludge. So bands like Amenra, Callisto, Year of No Light, etc. won't be featured here as they have negligible progressive elements. I also won't feature any post-black metal/blackgaze as that is a whole separate genre.

The Birth of Experimental Sludge (1986 - 2000)

This is where it all started, this section will cover the most important bands that started experimental sludge metal. But to get there we have to start with the band that started sludge metal.

Melvins - The first band that truly could be called sludge metal was Melvins. They were one of the first to combine the fast tempos of hardcore punk with the slow tempos of doom, and from there on the sludge genre was born. While Melvins definitely was experimental occasionally in their music (which you could especially see in their third album *Bullhead*), I would still never call them progressive or post-metal. The originators of that genre were another band from the US known as Neurosis.

Neurosis - Neurosis formed in 1985. At first they sounded like just another Hardcore Punk band, but after releasing two albums and an EP they decided to change their sound in 1992, which resulted in the first release that could definitely be called Post-Metal known as *Souls at Zero*. This album took sludge and added more atmosphere to it, but also progressive and psychedelic elements. But it also had just a whole other song structure to it than other sludge at the time with long build-ups and ambient sections. Therefore they created a whole new subgenre.

Neurosis are still around today and is definitely the most influential band in this genre. They are truly a band that has never done a bad album. However the album that I recommend the most are the ground-breaking *Through Silver in Blood* which is a album every metalhead should listen to.

Godflesh - While this band is better described as ind

Elric of Melniboné and Other Stories (The Gollancz Edition) is a bit of a Mess: Love the novel itself, confused by some of the editorial decisions. *Review, Essay*

This is a review of the first of the Gollancz editions that came out earlier this decade. Gollancz apparently wanted to publish the definitive Michael Moorcock collection.  Now, the argument can be made that Gollancz did not entirely succeed, because, now that I’m done with Elric of Melniboné, I’m not entirely sure which Elric collection to pick up next. Oh, well, nothing a Google search won’t resolve. Elric of Melniboné and Other Stories collects several essays penned by Moorcock, an Introduction by Alan Moore, a prequel short story, telling of an earlier incarnation of the Eternal Champion, the script of the comic book that tells of the origins of Elric’s sorcerous power and his first back-and-forth with his duplicitous, power-hungry cousin, Yyrkoon. The juicy bit here is nothing other than the first of Moorcock's proper-length novels, Elric of Melniboné. I'll get my gripes out of the way first and then, I'll tell you why I think the novel is special, as a reader new to Moorcock's signature protagonist.

***

It’s a weird editorial choice, putting “Master of Chaos” before the actual stories that involve Elric. Yes, I get it, Aubec of Malador chronologically precedes everything else (does it, Moorcock fans?), and Aubec was the Eternal Champion (an Eternal Champion? Reincarnation is all very confusing, you know…) but I really was looking forward to meeting THE Eternal(-est of) Champion(s) before I met an older model.  So there, that was a bit of a shock. The story itself? It’s your run-of-the-mill sword&sorcery (except not really) during which our protagonist Aubec faces off against all sorts of daunting creatures and challenges, finding out in the end that>! they were his inner demons all along!<. Interesting enough but I suspect I might’ve gotten more out of it if I was better familiar with Moorcock’s Eternal Champion universe.

How about Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer? That was an interesting experience, I don’t think I’ve ever read this long a script before. It’s a lengthy read, about 130 pages and I found it highly educational as someone who likes to scratch comic book ideas on napkins in the middle of the night. I enjoyed the dialogue. Some of the notes Moorcock put in there were downright hilarious and obviously there for the artist’s benefit:

>And while you should do your best, Walter, to make him look as different from the guy in The Matrix as possible, it’s not my fault that I thought Sepiriz up looking like thi

I wrote an "Why Kanye is dope" essay for people who don't like Kanye, to help them them appreciate him more (including 10 songs to listen to). Share it with your Kanye-hating friend!

Foreword.

I don't know how exactly I ended up being the type of person to bring up Kanye West in casual conversation. I don't know what it is more a case of - people asking me to explain things about him because they're interested, or me developing a tendency to go off on a Kanye tangent from any topic.

Regardless of that, there's been many evenings where I found myself telling yet another short Kanye story to the most diverse groups of listeners that wanted to understand "what's so special about this rapper dude with a god complex". After a good number of rants, wildly varying in cohesion, an idea formed to write a little "guide to Kanye", perfect to use in those situations.

While I was writing this, many friends had heard about it and asked for a copy, which made me take it a bit more seriously and properly write something I won't be ashamed of, so here you go everyone :)

Chapter 1. Intro.

Even among a group of people as rich in curious characters as music superstars, Kanye West is a figure that stands out as someone well known for his outlandish behavior. In most people's minds, his eccentricity is probably not the good kind. However, if you look a little further than the infamous Grammy speech, you might find his most frequently portrayed image to be skewed or exaggerated. Understandably so - after all, most "people" publications survive by portraying things in a way that will generate the most interest.

I am going to attempt to paint a different, demystified image - one from a less sensationalist perspective. I will focus on things about Kanye that I find interesting, but of course you are free to decide how to feel about them. Not to say this will be free of personal opinion entirely, as the things I choose to mention are going to show my biases in their own way. However, I will try not to do that too much.

I feel like the only fitting way for me to describe a person I've never met is, of course, through their own work. Therefore, I will go through ten Kanye West songs that I would consider "essential" to get a fuller view of him, be it for their influence, certain lyrics that show what he is about, or simply because of personal preference. I strongly recommend listening to the tracks mentioned as you read :)

Chapter 2. The Graduation Trilogy and why it's not an exaggeration that Kanye's music is revolutionary

Let's go about the music Ye has been releasing chronologically, both because it's a good way to structure something like

Dreams of Eschaton – A Guide to Manilla Road in Honor of Mark Shelton (RIP)

###Foreword

On Friday July 27th, Mark "The Shark" Shelton passed away while playing the Headbangers Open Air fest in Germany.

Mark was an active musician from 1977 all the way to the very end. In his decorated career that spanned over 40 years, Mark has put out 20 full length albums. He's primarily known for being the major driving force behind Manilla Road, but in recent years he launched a side projected called Hellwell. I can say earnestly that virtually all 20 of these albums across both bands are great. The sheer level of quality control and consistency seen here is virtually unheard of and only rivaled by the legendary Black Sabbath and Motorhead.

Mark's passing is extremely tragic and unfortunate - he deeply touched the lives of many, myself included. He toiled for decades and decades in the metal underground without a single ounce of proper mainstream recognition. While the advent of the internet has brought about a revitalization of interest for Mark's music, it can be quite daunting trying to get into a band with such an expansive discography like Manilla Road.

My goal is to use this unfortunate opportunity to help introduce people to Mark's wonderful career. Manilla Road are a very special band and deserve far more acclaim than they've received.

###Who are Manilla Road and what style do they play?

Manilla Road are a Witchita, Kansas based metal band that started out way back in 1977. Mark Shelton, on guitar and vocals, founded the band with a few high school buddies and after playing in the local bar scene for a bit, they managed to get traction and release their first album, titled Invasion, in 1980.

In the early days, Manilla Road played a traditional style of metal that blended elements of progressive and space rock to create a relaxing and otherwordly sound. The band's landmark 1983 album Crystal Logic saw the band evolve to a style almost entirely their own - epic heavy metal.

The famous Manilla Road brand of epic heavy metal blended elements of traditional metal, US-style power metal, doom metal, and sometimes even thrash metal with the loose and lengthy song structures found in the band's space rock roots. While lyrics don't determine a musical genre, Mark always had an affinity for building fantasy worlds with his meticulously crafted words. All this melts together to create a unique and grandiose sound that separates Manilla Road from the legions of bands out there.

Hit or miss old comment I had saved (dead meme warning)

I have deduced the reason behind why and how this video is cursed. For one, this girl is highly attractive and her cosplay is actually good, appealing the eyes of watchers. Her cosplay also reveals her stomach which is very nicely shaped (not to skinny, not fat, not ripped, but a really natural look, it’s intriguing to look at). Her makeup is good as well. It really brings out her eyes and makes her smile a lot more appealing. Secondly, I myself find myself fascinating at the way she moves. It’s very smooth and fun to watch. For example the spin at the start that she stops suddenly and kind of leans foreword then quickly straightens out, it is very well executed and goes along with the beat, making it satisfying to watch. I’m most obsessed with the part however when the song says “you got a boyfriend...” and she is kind of bobbing her way gracefully towards the camera. The way she moves most of her entire body when walking is really satisfying. She even does it to the beat of the song. And if also like to point out her shoulder movements throughout most of the video. They add a lot more energy to her movements. On that note, that leads us to my third point: the song and how she utilizes the song to compliment her movement. This song and lyrics itself are not that great, but the woman singing the song sings it well. That however, is not the reason why this matters though. The voice of the actual singer really fits the girl in the video. It not only compliments her cosplay (making it cuter), but also compliments her dancing. As I mentioned earlier, the way she moves is simply satisfying to watch, and part of that is because of how seamlessly and smoothly she move to the song. The spinning at the beginning goes very well with the chorus ending in the background. That little booping of her chest after the spin I mentioned earlier is timed when the rapper makes a rapper sound that transitions into the girls part (what does he even say? Is it like “bite” or “bye” or something? Idek) makes it mesmerizing and satisfying to watch. Her head boops are very well timed too. When the song says “hit or miss” as well as the “huh” after, she moves her head slightly too the beat that makes it better than had she not of moved her head. And then the little bopping/walking thing she does that I mentioned earlier, is so perfectly timed to the beat and the words of the song. And then my last point, is her facial expressions. Obviously, she has a beautiful face, but there are sm

[Artist Spotlight] - Patti Smith

Patti Smith

Synopsis

Born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, Patti Smith is a singer, writer and artist who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock scene. After working on a factory assembly line, she began performing spoken word and later formed the Patti Smith Group (1974-79). Her most famous album is Horses. Her relationship with Fred "Sonic" Smith caused a hiatus in her singing career, but she returned to music after his untimely death. She went on to release more than 10 albums.

Early Life

Singer, songwriter and poet Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the eldest of four children born to Beverly Smith, a jazz singer turned waitress, and Grant Smith, a machinist at a Honeywell plant. After spending the first four years of her life on the south side of Chicago, Smith's family moved to Philadelphia in 1950 and then to Woodbury, New Jersey, in 1956, when she was 9 years old.

A tall, gangly and sickly child with a lazy left eye, Smith's outward appearance and shy demeanor gave no hint of the groundbreaking rock star she would become. However, Smith says she always knew that she was destined for greatness. "When I was a little kid, I always knew that I had some special kind of thing inside me," she remembered. "I mean, I wasn't attractive, I wasn't very verbal, I wasn't very smart in school. I wasn't anything that showed the world I was something special, but I had this tremendous hope all the time. I had this tremendous spirit that kept me going... I was a happy child, because I had this feeling that I was going to go beyond my body physical... I just knew it."

Art and Musical Inspirations

As a child, Smith also experienced gender confusion. Described as a tomboy, she shunned "girly" activities and instead preferred roughhousing with her predominantly male friends. Her tall, lean and somewhat masculine body defied the images of femininity she saw around her. It was not until a high school art teacher showed her depictions of women by some of the world's great artists that she came to terms with her own body.

"Art totally freed me," Smith recalled. "I found Modigliani, I discovered Picasso's blue period, and I thought, 'Look at this, these are great masters

ISLAM 101: The Basic Concepts of Islam: Part 6

The Concept of the Universe

In the foreword, we briefly discussed the position of the Muslims and the future of Islam in Western Hemisphere. In this part, we shall discuss the position of man in the contemporary world, the general human situation, and the Islamic concept of the universe or world view. This will reaffirm the concepts that have already been discussed, add some new ideas, and tie together the various dimensions of the subject in a summary recapitulatory fashion.

The present human situation is alarming, to say the least. It demands concern and active response on the part of all people of goodwill and God – mindedness. But this does not, and should not, lead to despair or resignation. The spirit of hope is, and has always been, an integral part of Islam (see, e. g., Quran 12:87; 65:3) The problems and crises of modern times are not entirely unique or peculiar. It is true that they are difficult, complex, and agonizing. Perhaps this is even more so now than ever before. But the difference, however, between this age and those of yester centuries is basically a difference of degree rather than of kind. The ever-increasing complexity of our contemporary predicaments may be largely due to a similar, proportionate rise in our expectations and capacities.

For many centuries and in numerous regions of the globe, the chief source of the most difficult crises has essentially been a kind of inflexible, exclusive, and intolerant attitude toward the unfamiliar, the different, and the foreign. This orientation fostered racism, elitism, bigotry, prejudice, and a whole host of other equally distasteful attitudes.

Few people can really deny that humanity is facing an unusual crisis. This present human crisis seems to emanate from a serious imbalance between our external, outward, material explorations and our internal, inward, moral gropings. Nothing is simpler than calling for the maintenance of equilibrium, advocating a middle range, or crusading for the golden means. Yet nothing has been harder to attain. In the past, utterances such as man cannot live by bread alone were sometimes so distorted as to connote disregard for man’s material welfare. Similarly, trust in God has been misunderstood; it is often taken to mean helpless fatalism or categorical denial of human free will and self-realization. An overemphasis on spirituality and resignation is bound to give rise to a counter emphasis on materialism, rationalism, free will, and so on. Stressed bey

Something to remember about Tom

Basically a response to this post

Couple of things

  1. I’m not a investor of shill for TSSA, just a dude that was into punk rock and was paying attention.
  2. My main point here is that Tom is sincere and not purposefully scamming people.
  3. I could be wrong.

Circa 2001 I was young and getting into punk rock. Offspring, Sum 41, Green Day ect

Blink and Green Day were always my shit, bought the Cd’s, learnt the songs on guitar ect

After a while and about 50 tracks at the end of Blinks love CD of them talking shit I started to get an idea of the personalities in some of my favourite bands.

In blink you’ve got:

Mark Hoppus : Down to earth silly guy, bit of a mommas boy.

Travis Barker: Quiet dude, animal behind a drum kit.

Tom Delonge: Crude as fuck, believes in aliens.

Everyone knew Tom Delonge was into aliens, probably because of the song he wrote called Aliens Exist.

Tom states in numerous interviews ranging from last year all the way back to about 2000 that the first thing he did when Blink got big and he got his first paycheque he bought a PC to look at alien shit. He also details pre having the internet in your hand always having a book in his hand. Travelling from gig to gig there was a lot of down time on tour and he spent this time reading UFO books.

2001 on the “Take off your pants and Jacket tour” Delonge decides right I’ve read a few books, I’m aware of the key players in the UFOlogy field and I’ve got the money to facilitate let’s take this up a notch. He hits up Steven Greer who hadn’t started offering retreats out in the desert to contact aliens and was actually doing some great work with the Disclosure Project.

He hits Greer and Carol Rosin (Wherner Von Braun’s, the gentleman who one decade was a nazi, next decade chilling with Mickey Mouse telling the American public how we will be landing on the moon soon, apprentice at Fairchild Industries) up and brings them out on stage and gets to know them. Greer gives him a load of unedited footage from the Disclosure project in a move I’ve heard Greer describe as a attempt to bring the Disclosure Project to Hollywood.

Tom sits on the footage and starts to get paranoid his phones are being tapped so he goes quiet on the UFO front. He doe

The prog metal/rock album you've listened to the most in your life

Hello there !
When I try to figure out which album (or movie/video game/book etc) is my favourite, the choice is always too hard to make. So instead, I decided to look at the album I spend most time listening to.
Mine is Entropia, by Pain of Salvation. I've been a fanvoy of PoS since I've first listened to Remedy Lane ten years ago, and while ""BE"" is their album that blow my mind the most, Entropia is irremediably the album I want the most to listen.
I love the energy of the album, how it goes in many different directions and yet stays coherent. I love songs like Oblivion Ocean and Plains of Dawn that immediately make you feel so much emotions, just through Daniel's singing (seriously, once again, his voice is fucking amazing).
I love the pain and crazy energy of Winning a War, Stress and Nightmist, the guitars and drums there are amazing.
I could try to talk about all the songs, but I wouldn't make them justice.
So I'll end with my 3 favourite songs of the album :
! (Foreword) gives a perfect hint of the energy and pain of the album - my favourite 1st song of a band along with Script for a Jester's Tear
Leaving Entropia (Epilogue) ends the album in a perfect way, with such raw emotions and beautiful lyrics, but calm so that you can digest this incredible ride
People Passing By is to me the masterpiece of the album, and one of PoS' most amazing song (and one of the greateast songs I've heard). I'm always left speechless by this song, the lyrics are so beautiful and heartbreaking, the guitars are the most astonishing I've heard, and the build-up leads to such a perfect finale....
What is the album you can never stop listening ? The one you know by heart ?
Edit: you've given me quite a lot of new albums to discover, so thanks guys

[WWII] German impression "HOW-TO" masterpost!

Guide to creating a Landser

Foreword - this is pretty much a source page for any information I wish I had while creating my Landser or materials I did use! While this is mostly based on doing an impression in the US, the actual details are near universal. Hope this helps.

Table of contents

Subject Description
Basics Becoming a soldier
Wehrmacht Actually becoming a soldier
Deutsch Speak German
Sources Vendors, get your vendors here

BASICS

1. ACTUAL BASICS

There were 4 main branches in the Wehrmacht that you can choose from: The Heer, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, and Waffen-SS. There are units across the United States and UK/EU that represent all of these, but it is ultimately your decision (mostly based on location) where you will end up.

2. THE HAIR

Most German soldiers did not have crew cuts and none had mops. Nor were there handlebar mustaches. Sideburns are a definite no. They were, for the most part, clean cut soldiers. The noted exception are the Gebirgsjäger -- and even then they were only permitted a centimeter of beard growth. Occasionally, Alter would have pencil style, "hollywood" style, or a toothbrush style mustache. As a new landser, you are NOT permitted to have facial hair.^1

And if you have any sort of long or modern hair, you will also need a haircut. Thankfully, there are thousands of pictures of German soldiers (and reenactors) for you to bring to the barber!

Some guidelines: you should have "white walls" -- from Der Erste Zug: "the hair is shaved to at least one inch (if not more) above the ear, then it begins to taper."^2 Think Macklemore/undercut. DEZ also provides a PDF file with some nice cuts.^3 I also have an Imgur album with some appropriate haircuts for any reasonable length of hair.

3. THE BUILD

This is probably the most overlooked thing by any reenactor, and for any combination of reasons. Most Landsers weren't fat. I am not trying to offend when I say this -- I myself am stocky and short, those are genetics. Nor do I eat a wartime diet! You don't need to eat, live and breath WWII. However, your impression will be cheaper and reenacting will be easier if you aren't an obese couch potato. Do you need to be ten pounds soaking wet? No. Can you be built differently or have disorders, etc, and reenact? Absolutely. But make sure you are in shape enough to run around, march, stand for a long time, be in formation, and other things you may h

First impressions after binging Meteora

After listening to the entirety of Hybrid Theory, I wanted to continue with Meteora. Here are my thoughts:

  • Foreword is the best song on the album
  • Don't Stay gives me strong HT vibes, and the lyrics are admittedly pretty angsty
  • Somewhere I Belong already sounds much different from HT, it's more melodic and the guitars are less heavy
  • Lying From You starts off pretty funky and goes back to HT sonorities, with heavier guitars and consistently more screaming than the previus two songs; it kinda reminds me of Papercut
  • If LFY reminded me of Papercut, Hit The Floor is reminiscent of One Step Closer for the similarly rememberable riff and the headbanging potential
  • Unlike the previous two songs, Easier To Run isn't easily comparable to any HT song, maybe to Crawling for the structure, but it's probably the first song on the album that gives me Meteora vibes and not Hybrid Theory vibes

(fuck off Spotify with your ads, you ruined the Faint transition)

  • Faint is hands down a badass song, has one of the best bridges of all early LP songs and one of the most recognizable intros of their entire discography; it's also quite a change from ETR because it's much faster
  • Figure.09 goes back to a heavy HT style and sounds like a mixture of Runaway and APFMH, with some elements of Faint sprinkled in
  • Breaking The Habit is the real gamechanger of the album: there are no heavy guitars, there's no Mike, there are violins, and it sounds much more electronic than the rest of the songs. It serves as a transition to M2M's less heavy sound, and does an amazing job at it
  • From The Inside reprises Faint's sonorities and screaming bridge, but otherwise doesn't have anything that stands out particularly
  • Nobody's Listening starts off different with the japanese flute, and it has a very hip hop vibe, with the guitars less prominent and more focus on the vocals. The lyrics... are a whole different story; it's kinda like Crawling where the lyrics themselves are overshadowed by the way they're sung

(fuck another ad)

  • Session is very chill like CFTI but it feels less like a Hahn showcase than it, but rather more of an experiment for the band to see how far they could go instrumentally and with the sampling
  • Numb is one of the most iconic songs ever produced by LP, but everybody knows that. As for an album closer, it doesn't really sum up perfectly the sound of the record, but it does succeed in delivering what the band was trying to do with this album in my opinion:

[RATE] The 2017 Hip Hop Rate

Hey, everyone!

If there’s any genre that’s benefited from the age of streaming, it’s been hip hop. Both 2016 and 2017 have seen huge success for rappers even if they weren’t getting radio play, and have shown the power of cultivating a young, mostly online fanbase in the current music climate. It’s only gaining traction: six hip hop songs (Bad and Boujee by Migos, Black Beatles by Rae Sremmurd, HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar, I’m the One by DJ Khaled, Bodak Yellow by Cardi B, and Rockstar by Post Malone) claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017, compared to two in 2016. Post Malone held the number one spot for nearly three times as long as Taylor Swift, that’s the power of hip hop right now.

Given this popularity, it seems like as good a time as ever to do a follow-up to the 2016 Hip Hop Rate and Drake Drag by looking at four rap albums from 2017 that attracted acclaim and success while also showcasing the variety of the genre. These four albums cover four distinct approaches and styles to hip hop: jazzy and personal, brash and political, trappy and melodic, chaotic and experimental. They’re four of the most interesting artists in the game right now, but for this rate they’ll be pitted against each other.

[COLLECTION] Jesus Christ Superstar - Libretti

(Previously posted, but re-classified for easier viewing.)

I know what you're thinking. "Wait a minute, isn't Jesus Christ Superstar a rock opera, notorious for lacking a script other than the music and lyrics? Isn't that the reason no one production has ever solidified as the way to do it?" This is true, but licensing agencies have to hand out something.

  • Based on the title page inscription, at some point this version (new link by u/randylb103) was licensed by MTI back in the day. Considering the many '70's productions that basically resembled this, maybe this stopped being the standard in the early '80's or later, but at some point it disappeared from circulation (by the time I got the perusal package from MTI in 2000, all I got was the score, and R&H -- which used the same materials -- never handed this out either, to my knowledge). This script is (a version of) the show as we know it, but there are stage directions that seem to have originated in the Tom O'Horgan production, or a stripped-down variant thereof (i.e., there's an increased role for Judas' Tormentors, figures that began with O'Horgan and continued to be a trope of JCS productions into the '90's; there's some description of Judas' actions that seems, based on photographs and the accounts of those who saw it, to indicate basically what Ben Vereen did). As we've seen from pictures that cropped up over the years, the '70's tour that starred Kurt Yaghjian as Judas (and briefly played Broadway in 1977 with Patrick Jude in that role) had visual elements in common with O'Horgan's production without being a direct copy, so seems like a possible source for these stage directions, which are clearly specific to one production, no doubt created by the director or stage manager rather than Tim Rice. Judging by the brief foreword, reminiscent of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's later intro to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, it's clear that someone among the powers-that-be had trouble with the script being considered the gold standard, being very careful to state this is only one way to do it.
  • This version is currently handed out when the show is licensed from ALW's agency The Musical Company. Glorified lyric sheet, noteworthy only for where it differs from the score.

A Changed Mer Carol, by Churl Dicnus

"Please go to bed little ones-"

"No, no, no, I haven't the energy for even a little one, much less that story."

"All right, I suppose, since you did mash all the kwama cuttle today."

--------------------

Marlunin was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the priest of Xarxes, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Lord Veloth signed it: and Veloth’s name was good upon ’Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marlunin was as dead as a door-nail.

Veloth was absolutely devastated at the loss of his chief confidant, his friend, his prayer partner, and his brother in the pilgrimage of the eight graces; but he was confident that in the bosom of the Aedra, Marley was content and at peace.

Now it was in those days the anniversary of the Convention, and it would be at that time until the anniversary of the slaying of Lorkhan that the fair-skinned mer would delight and sing gaily songs of devotion to the Divines. So was Veloth in this season, vested in robes of light fabrics and generously giving unto his workers and neighbors confections and of fruits and nuts and for the children he carried around small sweets and presents that he would give away liberally to the little ones that ran up to him.

“Praise Trinimac’s spear!” Those who knew him would call out.

And with “And Auriel’s bow!” He would respond.

He was once a very wealthy man, Lord Veloth, but over time, his fortunes turned and yet his giving heart and generous nature always remained. He had a worker laboring under him, an assistant, whose child was rendered lame from birth whose name was “Small Timuriono” for he was forever stunted in size and the least of his siblings. Lord Veloth visited this Small Timuriono regularly, and he saw to his every need that even he may grow up to live well amongst his people.

The Lord of Veloth was a widower, but he himself had several grown sons and daughters who came to visit him every eve, and every eve he would teach them the lessons of the Aedra and the wisdom of their forefathers. One evening, after meeting with them and bidding them farewell to retire, he found himself unable to sleep for the excitement of the last day of festivities was but hours away, and the pious and kind Veloth would delight in the joy of others.

Sonic Adventure 2 Knuckles Story

Okay listen up, because I have something really important that I’ve wanted to share with you guys for a long time.

It will take some time to explain, but, this is just really important to me, so if you would take the time to read through this I would really appreciate it. I know it’s a lot, but please, just give it a chance.

While Sonic Adventure 2 may seem, from the outside, to be just another middling 3D action game with a tacked on story, this is hardly the case. In fact, it is just a shell whose hard candy center is one of the best kept secrets in gaming. If the Sonic Adventure series, if it can really be called that, is remembered for anything it is its ridiculous music, and voice acting, and really pretty much everything about it is. Few people, however, know that some of that music, namely the themes accompanying the Knuckles levels, were written by long time Sega audio producer Tomoya Ohtani in association with rapper Hunnid P. Even fewer are aware that, right under Sega's nose, he penned a veritable opera for the little monotreme. Hidden within each of these seemingly incomprehensible songs is the tale of a very confused soul, lost in a reality of its own design, that is struggling to come to terms with the profound realization of its utter powerlessness in the world. It is, in a word, beautiful. Perhaps this is somewhat unbelievable claim, but let me assure you of its authenticity.

I've created a write up delving into, in detail, this tale of epic proportions. But first, some explanation.

Foreword Before I begin, I'd like to establish a few things so that we are all clear on what this actually is.

First off, you have to realize that this is not, completely, Ohtani's original vision. Because he had to make his true intentions as unnoticeable as possible in order to get his songs approved, and since Sega ultimately had the final word on everything, his work has been obscured to some degree. Everything had to be contextual to the levels in the game, which had already been finalized before Ohtani was brought in, but thankfully Ohtani left behind song titles to serve as additional clues the original meaning of each piece. I will be examining these as well, and as such I have included them alongside the name of each level.

With that out of the way, let me clarify one more pressing issue that is most likely at the forefront of your mind. I'd imagine that, right now, some of you are thinking "Why haven't I heard of this before?" That's a very good

the_oa What makes you incredible is that you have traveled outside this coma that we're all in.

I. Foreword

I haven't consulted the_oa theories since august last. I hope I'm not repeating anyone already. I had begun writing a ten-part explanation to my theory, but tbh, I'm exhausted. I just want OUT. besides, the series was never intended to be resolved by one single person. it's made to be a group effort. "Critique improves the work"

What follows is a crude, typo-riddled summary of the main points I was going to included in my full theory. My full theory was a pretty thing with headers, pictures, and footnotes...but you know what? Pretty burned me out. I've been slaving at it for 6 months, and I am still on part 4/10. There really is no beginning and end to the_oa. It's what makes it a beautiful piece of art. Explaining it is a whole other thing, and I've always been one to think that explanation destroys the art...

You will notice that I quote Ursula K. Leguin and J.R.R. Tolkien a lot. Leguin was a sci-fi and fantasy writer. Her work is heavily influenced by the tao, a philosophy of embracing the unknown/darkness, which I believe the_oa to have been influenced by too (or by a similar non-dogmatic philosophy). I don't know the tao, but I do know Leguin, so I will be treading that path with my hand in hers. As for Tolkien, he was a linguist, and Thought a lot about the stories in languages and the language of stories, which is fundamentally what I believe this show to be about.

Note: I am currently rummaging through my notes to add my sources, and clarify some points with examples. Ultimately, I will make another post for side-notes, but I hope to gather the gist of it in one single master post.

SPOILER ALERT: needless to say, if you haven't yet watched the show, don't read what follows the end of this sentence.

II. In A Nutshell

I believe Prairie is an unreliable narrator mythologizing her story to work through trauma on her own terms.

The_oa basically takes the themes and the twist ending of Life of Pi and makes the story better. It is the story about the power of stories that takes the audience for a ride by making them part of it.

Now, on to my (very much abridged, though it may not look it) explanation.

III. The Theory of Everything

A. How Not To Get Lost: Know Your Surroundings

The first thing you have to understand of Brit and Zal is that see themselve

How a little man got big faith

How do I put into words the very thing that left me speechless?

That phrase has been rattling around in my head since a year ago, when the plane I was on carried me away from the place where my life changed forever.

I was a depressed loner all last year, proclaiming Jesus outwardly but inwardly wishing he’d cut me some slack. “I never asked anything of you,” I would frequently say in my prayers, before asking him for things. One thing, in particular, stood out as a particularly tough roadblock to cross.

I already was feeling down. I was listening to depressing music, written by artists (Eminem, Nas), who weren’t exactly going after God’s heart. I also wrote depressing songs, in the mold of my favorite artists - and so when I found out that one of my closest friends wrote intensely emotional poetry, I was hooked. I began pushing myself into darker places emotionally, trying to get the most dark characters possible. I dabbled in everything - a short story about mass slaughter and suicide, dark poetry and rap songs, and finally a book, Praying for Nightmares. The premise, of course, being that the main character (modeled loosely off of my hideously disfigured view of my own life) had it so bad that he would pray for nightmares. They were better, he reasoned, than how the “real world” was treating him. After a long strand of emotionally-charged monologues, he hands himself over to the devil. To pray for nightmares was to pray for the devil’s reality. A horrible gift… but the sort of twisted happiness Hugh (the protagonist) enjoyed upon the fulfilment of his wishes was something I had been yearning after for months.

That friend I mentioned earlier… I was worried about her. I had never known anyone with depression, and so didn’t know what to expect. I was well known around my school as “the Christian kid,” and so I figured I’d pray. God grants other people’s prayers, why not mine?

Nothing happened. I had no relationship with God to speak of, even remember wondering as a child what people meant when they spoke of their relationship with our heavenly father. How could you be friends with a cold man who lives in the sky?

Night would fall, and again I would beg for my friend to be healed. Nothing. I began to lash out, anger building where it was never meant to grow. I distanced myself from the same God everyone was pushing me to, at one point writing, “I know he’s up there/And that’s why we pray to him/But right now, I don’t know if he really is!” My relation

Stuff of Legends: Unanswered Prayers

Foreword: This short story make use of lyrics to a song by Electric Light Orchestra. I am not trying to pass the song off as mine. I'll include a link to a youtube video with the song.

An old familiar feeling struck the monarch. It’s not fear, not this time. As Adalinda lands her ship she takes a moment to calm herself. She compresses her fury into a boiling mass in her stomach.

An expanding empire was beginning to encroach on the territory of the council races. When Adalinda volunteered to act as an ambassador the council was thrilled. Her skills at deliberation were renowned. No one suspected that she already knew the Empires leadership. Almost no one.

The doors of her ship opened and Adalinda took off in a glide over a bustling city. Her golden scales glistened in the light of the planets yellow sun. She didn’t need directions. The meeting place was in the dead center of the city. Its large concrete dome was one she would recognize anywhere.

“They always did have a thing for pageantry” she thought to herself.

Adalinda landed gracefully before the imposing columns. She began to walk in careful not to scratch the stone floors with her claws. Once inside she was met by the sight of twelve figures in twelve thrones. They were arranged in a semi-circle around the room. The thrones were the only difference in the otherwise perfect reproduction of the Roman Pantheon.

Sitting in the central throne was the lord of the skies himself, Jupiter. He wasn't dressed in his traditional purple toga, but in the armor of a roman general. He was in the form of a human. With his dark hair cut short and clean shaven face he appeared to be in his early thirties. Though, Adalinda knew he was far older.

"Little Ada!" Jupiters voice boomed like a thunder clap.

"It has been far too long. When I heard that the council would be sending an ambassador I never would have guessed that it would be you. That will make things much easier."

"It has been too long your majesty. When I found out that this empire served the gods I knew I had to come myself," Adalinda replied.

She kept her head low and her voice soft. An effort that seemed to please the gods. They began speaking to one another too quietly for

Arts and Crafts: The Difference Between the Two and Why it Matters

[Foreword: I originally posted this stuff on a Facebook group page dedicated to helping people build up their video production businesses. It didn't get a lot of attention there and I think there's some solid conclusions and points in here so I figured it might be worth resharing on a more appropriate forum. Hope it does something for someone.]

I'd like to take a moment to talk about Arts, Crafts, the difference between the two, and the value of each as it relates to us as we try to build our businesses.

This all might meander a bit, but I promise to bring it all home before it's over.

About 3-4 years ago, a good, super talented film school friend of mine produced a play for Orlando's Fringe Festival, which is sorta like a giant sampler platter of plays from different theater companies located throughout Florida and sometimes other parts of the country.  The name of the play was "Arts and Crafts" and contained a series of vignettes featuring characters who were engaged in either an art or a craft discussing what they thought the difference was between the two.  There was the widow who filled a scrap book with mementos dedicated to her late husband and who was convinced that what she was doing was engaging in a craft even though the passion with which she poured into her scrap book elevated the project into high art.  There was the musician whose lyrics were so painfully cliche that everything he produced really dragged the art into more of a "paint-by-numbers" craft.  And there were vignettes covering everything in between.

The whole play really got me wondering what the difference between an ART and a CRAFT really was since the play's ending left that issue unresolved.

At that time I was working underneath my friend's father, the top photo/video editor for the city newspaper, The Orlando Sentinel.  I was a video production assistant who had graduated from my film production program at the University of Central Florida just a couple years previously.

Talking about film was weird at the newspaper.  I mean, the people that worked there liked watching films, sure, but moments before hiring me I was told outright "We don't normally hire film graduates here.  They tend to take too long to finish a project, are bad at cutting projects down to a size where people will watch them in their entirity, and tend to be stubborn and bad at taking criticism".

I like to think I did them proud while working there.  They were right, creating VIDEOS for them wa

How has the minutes to midnight tracks aged after 11 years?

11 years ago, Linkin Park released Minutes to midnight to a mixed critical reception. What do you think about the tracks, and the general philosophy of the band while recording the album? The goal here is to spark discussion about the MtM songs, belows follows an extensive review of the album, going track-by-track.

  • Wake. Great opener, and actually deserving of being it's own song (Cough, Cough foreword). Other than the dreamy, ambient synths, the standout on this track is the bassline, it really does it's own little thing as opposed to just doubling the guitar. Also, first Lp track with guitar bending.

-Given up. Linkin Park does a punk track, and it's absolutely brutal. Jingling keys and clapping hands is a great musical bed for the scratchy riff, the bass plays a prominent role and my god the vocal performance. Distoted B4's all over the chorus and the mindblowing scream for 18 seconds. Lyrics are sufficient in conveying a feeling but hardly groundbreaking, also no Joe Hahn. First time they used more organic samples in a song, and first use of pinch harmonics.

  • Leave out all the rest. there's some really nice layering on this track. The keyboard chimes and Cellos is punctuated with Piano, sweeping synth-stabs (Plenty of delay on those), sampled drums in double time and a swelling, distorted synth. These are all simplistics pieces, but combined they make for a careful, solemn atmosphere and builds anticipation nicely. Shame that the guitar parts are so dull.

The Lyrics are an absolutely fantastic perspective about the impact you have on the people around and our desires to be remembered. This song, we get both a great vocal performance (Chester's soft, quivering voice in the verses gives me shivers, very solid A2 for a brigh tenor) and great lyrics. Also love how the bridge return as the end with the chord progression from the verses, ending the song on an unusual chord.

  • Bleed it out. THIS is how do do a fresh take on an established concept. Classical, stripped down rock flair, wonderfully ironic lyrics and Mike absoutely kills it on the mic. There is a ton of odd little things going on, the odd guitar riff (this was due to Brad fucking up), some dissonent notes and troughout the entire track you can hear the band partying, clapping and singing along in the background which is just genious.

  • Shadow of the Day. Refreshing song with a surprising structure and duration. Just as beautiful as leave out all the rest, but even more sad. The strings

The Catharsis Theory: Volume 1

Foreword

I was the only one that showed up that day. It was an odd posting but I assumed that, out of curiosity alone, someone would have taken the bait. But no, I was alone with him in this strange, poorly lit classroom for 2 of the most fascinating hours of my life. It was the first of many incorrect assumptions I would have about Max and the last time that I would do anything in front of him without thinking twice.

Max was a very handsome man, which made this all the more confusing. He didn’t need to be here, he had money, a life outside of this. He definitely had it better than me, so I had to wonder, why? Why do it like this? It was dangerous and not likely to end well, for him or me, frankly. He never really answered that question, it just worked out like it did. We both showed up at the time we agreed to, with the materials we agreed to. Things moved quickly once we both realized it was for real.

I will say this about Max. He always outsmarted me, always stood a step or two ahead of me, always seemed to be experiencing something deeper than me. At first I admired it. He was so brazen, intentional with all his moves like this was all part of a story; a living one. I’m not really sure where he is right now, he’d like me to think he’s dead but if I actually believed that I wouldn’t be writing these words. The truth is, I think he knows exactly where I’m hiding. It’s possible he’s watching me type these words. It could be the paranoia I’ve been experiencing lately, but I’m convinced he’s already decided I’ll be his final victim.

What follows is the strange recounting of the past 6 weeks of my life. It includes the brief visits I shared with him after the class and an explanation of the contents of a small moving box; the contents of which included keepsakes from a murder spree over 20 years ago. This is where I’ll start, it’s where he told me to start and as you’ll come to see, obeying the rules in an essential part of playing Max’s game.

The story you’re about to hear is now my worst nightmare, and may just become yours…

The Catharsis Theory Volume 1:

“This film is in every stretch a fantasy…” That is how the first tape began. Hand written in thick black marker on white poster board. He was methodical, making these for someone else to see. If I wanted to, I could post them online today and go viral. Make some money and wash my hands of this by turning them in to the police. Yet somehow, I didn’t do the right thing. Or, to me

PSTOD #75: (The) Divided Sky

I figured I can just post the PSOTD at night. This is during non-peak reddit hours though so we'll see how well the posts do. If you want to recieve these via an email at around six am email me at [email protected] and I'll put you on the list. Today we are going to discuss the what is arguably the best Phish composition piece. Gamehedge wise it's a chant done by the Lizards to praise Icculus. Of course, I'm talking about Divided Sky.

Divided Sky first debuted on 1987/05/11 and was written by Trey with vocals by Mike, Page and Trey. Allegedly Trey has said the song was written during his first year at Mercer Community College on a night enhanced by psychedelic mushrooms. The chant originated while Trey noticed that the sky appeared divided into a light half and a dark half due to the lighting of a nearby chapel. Divided Sky has origins that predate this adventure however. Trey and his mother used to write Christmas songs together and they had written a musical called Gus the Christmas Dog. Two themes from that musical were lifted to form part of Divided Sky.

The song begins with a short introduction followed by the brief chant of "The Divided Sky, the wind blows high". After the chant it moved into a section referred to as the "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or "Palindrome" segment which is comprised of an intricate note pattern with a shifting time signature. This is played foreword and then backwards. This segues into a tension and release style of playing. After the main theme is presented, there is a brief pause in the song before Trey plays a theme-resolving note. Today this pause is usually filled with a lot of happy people cheering. In several early 90's interviews Trey has said during that pause he can hear the jam continuing in his head. He also described the pause as an exercise in audience behavioral study because it almost results in three waves of audience cheers. When Divided Sky debuted in 1987 it was a four minute version of itself. The music that now forms the meat of Divided Sky was being appended to No Dogs Allowed (another song from the Gus the Christmas Dog musical). In 1988 Divided Sky went on a six month hiatus and when it returned on 1988/09/24 it was the song as we all know it today and No Dogs Allow

My SFFB analysis

For me, this is not just the maturing of Tyler or his ultimate definition as an artist; this is a sad, haunting trip through his mind, his fantasies and realities, and something that definitely clashes with his celebrity persona.

LYRIC/BEAT/THEME ANALYSIS Y'ALL:

  1. Foreword: How in the fucking world did he know that CAN song? It has 20,000 streams on Spotify (most of which, I guess, came thanks to Tyler) and is a difficult band even to the rock culture, more-so to the hip-hop one. That is some DJ Shadow type of work, Tyler, huge props for that. So, of course, as you must've guessed by now, I love this beat. It's sudden as an intro to the album, which some might complain, but I kinda like that, and the beat switch is so heavenly it always gives me the chills. Lyric-wise, it has some of the hardest motherfucking bars Tyler has ever spit. Clever wordplay: "Life a game of basketball, you better shoot that nigga"; thoughtful questions: "How many raps can I write 'til I get me a chain? / How many chains can I wear 'til I'm considered a slave?"; interesting rhyme schemes: "How many riots can it be 'til them Black lives matter? / Niggas click clack splatter" and, indeed, it serves as a great intro to the album' themes, dealing with some inner conflict Tyler has in his mind, him wanting to be more than his possessions but knowing that people (mostly, his friends) are not ready and will not deal with his real self, so he needs to keep a facade, perpetuating a void of dilemmas, creating some suicidal thoughts: "And if I drown and don't come back / Who's gonna know?"

  2. Where This Flower Blooms: A song that I can see myself skipping in the future, I agree with melon head when he says that this beat is kinda shallow. I don't know why, but it lacks an emotional depth that other songs on this album got. Can't put my finger on it, but it isn't there. EDIT: FUCK WHAT I SAID, THIS TRACK IS REALLY GOOD INSTRUMENTALLY, SO MANY LAYERS AND BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENTS, OH MAN! It is interesting lyric-wise. As the title indicates, this is where Tyler bloomed, where Tyler was while he was rising to be the star he is today. Therefore, it seems to indicate some nostalgia; Tyler wants to go back to that time, I sense that he wants to escape the highlights and go back to a simpler day. However, he also mentions that he is now blooming, he's blooming his talent and driving luxury cars like "toys I only dreamed that I could afford", and he seems to send

The secret hidden deep meaning behind Attila's lyrics

Foreword:

Attila have been accused time and time again of having obnoxious, juvenile, edgy, terrible, downright offensive lyrics, but when has anyone EVER thought of delving deep inside the genius of their ocean-y depths of absolute brilliant lyricism? No? Thought so. ;)

As you can see I have selected 5 songs from Attila's critically acclaimed album Guilty Pleasure at random and cut them up a little so you can understand how serious and deep the topics in each song are.

Rebel

No one controls your life You do shit on your own If you've got ambitions then you're better off alone Acquaintances don't matter, teachers don't fucking matter, no one's opinions matter This is the time where wrongs become right You've got to stand up for yourself and fight You'll never know if it works so just try! You're gonna change your mind But you can't change my life Let's take it back and reminisce on the days you doubted on me I looked straight back into your eyes and I said Fuck You You wanted control over my life and all the decisions I made I did whatever the fuck I wanted do you see where I am at

As you can see this a song of rebellion.

Guilty Pleasure

I'm going crazy, and circumstance is to blame, between these sleepless nights, working all goddamn day Aw shit Success has come with a price so when you're contemplating fame you should take my advice Listen: You've gotta be yourself, you've got to break the mold, personalities are valuable Every single day and every single night, jealous people will try to bring you down

As you can see this a song of anxiety.

I've Got Your Back

This page has barely even turned Enter a whole new chapter Put your past behind you What's coming next will surely excite you Don't worry bout all of the horrors of your past Their words don't matter they can kiss my Hey don't wait Take a leap of faith and let your fate surprise you- Hey don't wait Let's be surprised at what we left behind Hey don't wait Today's the very first day of the rest of your life Party like a rock star just because we're glad to be alive You've gotta keep up with the best now Oh yeah, you wanna overcome Take a look back at the past and decide what you wanna become don't think twice about the possible Chances of failure we only live on optimism, we know the future won't fail us So look at your options and tell me to my face that I know what I'm doing Don't praise what you cannot see and feel Don't set yourself up for failure T

THE STORY OF FLOWER BOY (an in depth look at the narrative behind Tyler, The Creator's fourth studio album "Flower Boy")

Before you read this, I just want to say I spent a long time writing this and enjoyed every second of it. I learned a lot about the album and I hope you do to. I included time stamps for many of the audible parts i mention (except the lyrics) to help you hear what I am talking about. I apologize for the length but I got a little carried away as I wrote this. Feel free to leave comments, positive or negative, that explain how you feel about the narrative or the piece I have written. If i missed something or got something incorrect, leave a comment explaining what i missed and i will edit the post to fix it. Also, keep in mind that I did this as a favor to help some people understand the narrative more clearly. I am aware of the fact that the themes are pretty much irrelevant to what I was saying but I didn't want to rewrite the majority of the piece. Thank you. - ZRS

introduction to the themes of the album

foreword - The first song of the album and doesn't add anything significant to the album's story. Introduces the themes of the album including tyler's sexuality ("Sea I was never into the beaches and all the sands / See, I was in the woods with flowers, rainbows and posies"), boredom ("How many cars can I buy 'til I run out of drive?" meaning how long can his hobbies keep him occupied until he gets bored), and even depression with the emotional hook from Rex Orange County.

Where This Flower Blooms - Another song that doesn't necessarily add to the narrative. In this song, Tyler says "Ain't nobody fucking with T, but that may just be my ego" which shows Tylers inner thoughts of being lonely. This song also mentions Tyler's wealth, "Took a little while, nigga making leaves" with "leaves" meaning money.

the start of the narrative

Sometimes... - A skit that officially starts the narrative. In this skit, an unknown boy calls into a radio station asking to have the song about him played next. This leads perfectly into "See You Again".

See You Again - A beautiful love song that describes Tyler's feelings for the boy previously mentioned in "Sometimes...". In this song, Tyler says "It's them rose tinted cheeks, yeah it's them dirt-colored eyes" which is a reference to tylers old twitter bio which used to be "his rose tinted cheeks...". This confirms that the song is about a boy.

Who Dat Boy - This song asks a very important question: "Yo, who dat boy? Who him is?" After a love song written about an unknown boy, Tyler understands that his fans will be c

Plane-Talkers; a broad definition of the most famous dialects and codes in the multiverse.

EDIT: updated version here!

(OOC: the following is a fictional account of the languages in Fifth Edition from a linguistic perspective. It's canon in my games, but not necessarily in yours. It's mostly just a bit of fun to celebrate the upcoming Tome of Foes and it's projected motif of lore surrounding various cultures from a cosmic standpoint. I plan to go on to do the rest of the languages too, I've really only just got to the best ones. I'm mostly posting this to gauge interest, as I'll put it on DM's Guild for free after it's done and looks all nice. Ask any questions you want so I have something to do at my day job!)

Foreword

Cutters have long come to me for answers. After the proliferation of the work I’m probably most known for, "The Dabus-Common Phrase-book, or, the Dark Revealed,” the frequency with which folk stop me on the street to translate a rebus for them has diminished significantly.

But, any day I’m not lecturing or contracting, I can usually count on someone loitering outside my apartment, having been sent there by some berk in a bar, told that I can help them untangle some puzzle, or translate Uyo, or something or other. I’m glad to help, of course, but here and there I find myself doing the same work over and over. Frankly, I’m tired of explaining that yes, you do have to bite your own tongue to speak Infernal, unless you’ve got the good fortune to have a forked one.

And so, for the past month or two I’ve been working on this treatise. It contains my own musings on the three most widely spoken language families in the ‘verse, and so shouldn’t really be taken as gospel. There’s still a lot of back and forth in the linguistic community on a lot of what I plan to present. That said, I wholeheartedly believe that this is currently the most accurate and exhaustive description of the very fundamentals of opening your mouth in any of the major planes.

I will first cover the Standard languages, then the family known as Exotic, and finally briefly touch on the most famous codes in the planes, including a few dialects of Cant, Druidic, and Chant.

The Standard Languages

The Standard Languages of the Multiverse are named such because everyone tends to have at least one. If you know two or three of these, you’re going to be hard pressed to misunderstand anyone.

Common The Common tongue is perhaps one of the most arresting lang

The Philosophy Assembly Line

I was re-reading *Ontology: The Hermeneutics of Facticity* a few nights ago (maybe my favorite of H's books so far), and the foreword continues to strike me as a nice summary of young Heidegger's personality. It's basically a scathing critique of the idea of philosophy as a sort of industry obsessed with its own smooth functioning. What comes to mind for me is the academic industry, the fixed canon, the expensive certifications of authority. On reddit, for instance, there are forums pretty much closed to those who don't embrace the standard canon or the standard approach to the canon. Philosophy just *is* a certain academic system for these people -- a particular kind of investigation of a set of official philosophers.

My objection is that everyone is always already living a philosophy. Academia is just a career path (my own, in fact.) I suppose I'm objecting to the 'career-ification' of philosophy, or its interpretation in terms of a technical expert culture. The philosophy at play or at work in the world is mostly not academic. It is expressed in passing in ordinary language, in proverbs, song lyrics, etc. Expert philosophy, or the philosophy industry, speaks instead in a kind of specialized object language. This object language is learned, nevertheless, via the metalanguage, which is always ordinary language. For instance, our budding philosophy professor, still an undergrad, learns what famous dead philosopher 'meant' by translating the difficult object language into ordinary language. Or more accurately perhaps his ordinary language is extended slowly via lots of little connects to an object language which becomes more and more natural/ordinary.

Mastering this object language (and I mean jargon) is an impressive accomplishment. And it has the charm of functioning as a secret code between those 'in the know.' The dark side of this is what I'll call inflation. Ideas that are actually either common enough or almost taken for granted can start to sound quite novel and even profound if wrapped in sufficiently colorful and exclusive paper. For instance, I like Zizek, but sometimes I think all the Lacan, etc., is used to express something that is at least as accessible in ordinary language. Truly I've tended to grow impatient with unnecessary jargon. It reminds me of woo and crude politics, even though it's otherwise more exclusive.

I've had a love/hate relationship with Heidegger in these terms. His jargon is on the lips of a thousand fan

Leonard's final work, The Flame, in stores October 2

The Flame is the final work from Leonard Cohen, the revered poet and musician whose fans span generations and whose work is celebrated throughout the world. Featuring poems, excerpts from his private notebooks, lyrics, and hand-drawn self-portraits, The Flame offers an unprecedentedly intimate look inside the life and mind of a singular artist.

A reckoning with a life lived deeply and passionately, with wit and panache, The Flame is a valedictory work.

“This volume contains my father’s final efforts as a poet,” writes Cohen’s son, Adam Cohen, in his foreword. “It was what he was staying alive to do, his sole breathing purpose at the end.”

Leonard Cohen died in late 2016. But “each page of paper that he blackened,” in the words of his son, “was lasting evidence of a burning soul.”

For Your Consideration #60: Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness

Hey everyone, and welcome to this week's For Your Consideration, the weekly series where we discuss albums that aren't currently on our essentials list, and maybe why they should be. This week, /u/arcainzor tackles Have a Nice Life's monstrous debut double album Deathconsciousness.

Artist: Have a Nice Life

Album: Deathconsciousness

Listen:

Spotify

Apple Music

Background by /u/arcainzor

Have a Nice Life is a Connecticut-based shoegaze/post-punk duo, consisting of former In Pieces vocalist Dan Barrett and black metal experimentalist Tim Macuga. Drawing influence from artists ranging from Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails, to My Bloody Valentine and Sunn O))), Have a Nice Life’s music is ultimately unclassifiable. Their crushingly abstracted, yet hauntingly beautiful sound has been self-described as the “hook-laden soundtrack to the metaphorical lining-up-and-shooting of everyone you care about [in] this world” - a more apt description than one might think.

Since the release of their 2008 debut album Deathconsciousness, the band has sporadically released new material, instead opting to focus on their numerous side-projects, such as Giles Corey, Nahvalr, and The Flowers of St. Francis, before releasing their critically acclaimed follow-up album, The Unnatural World in 2014.

Foreword by /u/arcainzor

With its two full-length, genre-bending discs, titled The Plow That Broke the Plains and The Future, in addition to being mastered off 128kbps lossy files, Deathconsciousness is not an easy listen. Yet, it is a massively rewarding listen - no record I’ve ever heard to this day has stuck with me for this long.

When I first discovered it some odd 15 months ago, I listened to it 12 times in the span of three days. Since then, I’ve heard it on average every six days, if my Last.fm is to be believed – this album was, quite literally, my soul for a yea

An in depth analysis of the album "Flower Boy": Tyler's Car Ride Life

I believe the entire album is a story. A story about Tyler's life, set up as a ride in a car. Tyler expresses the large significance of cars in his life throughout the album and he has mentioned it in other albums and overall just a lot of times, so this could make sense. At the end of Sometimes a voice comes in - Shane Powers - saying "We're live on GOLF radio" and is accepting a call from a listener. The previous two songs (Foreword and Where This Flower Blooms) are almost seen as introductions. Foreword is a foreword of the themes in the album (just like you said) and Where This Flower Blooms could also be seen as an introduction as where this flower blooms almost seems like a metaphor for "where the story begins". It kinda sets the scene, like a "once upon a time" would, with Tyler as the narrator. There are a huge number of references to cars and driving in both of these songs hinting at the car ride theme. Anyways, these two songs could be a part of an opening to this story. The plot begins in Sometimes. I think that in Sometimes, Tyler is the listener who made the call, requesting they play the "one," referring the song, about him. The rest of the album is an accurate portrayal of Tyler's developed personality, hinting that the entire album is this "one" about him. After Sometimes is when he starts to really get deeper into the person he is. I'm not sure where he might physically be, but he's not in his car yet. See You Again begins expressing his current romantic fantasy and tells of how he feels as if the person he wants is an unrealistic dream of his (this fantasy meaning being in a relationship with a boy). Tyler is daydreaming while listening to the radio. Who Dat Boy is a representation of the media hype of Tyler himself. Camp Flognaw, the success of Earl and Frank because of Odd Future, the popularity of GOLF apparel and OF brand name clothes, and several other pieces of Tyler's work have all exploded in the media and Tyler has become very famous. Tyler displays his false confidence and fake ego in this song. Why it's false is explained in another song (we'll get there). At the end of Who Dat Boy, there is a sound of a car door shutting. This signifies Tyler getting into the car and the beginning of the car ride theme. The next song is Pothole, a song about driving. This is solidified in the chorus and throughout the song with lyrics such as "I had to switch gears on, fishtail in the rearview mirror on them". He explains of how wishes he live

Why SGI members are so confused about "The Human Revolution" and "The NEW Human Revolution", which are just fictional stories and not actually history

We all know that "The Human Revolution" and "The NEW Human Revolution" are novelizations, not accurate factual recounting of persons or events. It's a fictionalized account that Ikeda defends by co-opting Goethe (Ikeda was a YUGE fanboy of GERMAN writers in particular):

>...it is indeed true that one cannot write everything about oneself. JW Goethe entitled his autobiography Dichtung und Warheit, which means "Poetry and Truth". We have to admit that Goethe was an honest man because everything that meets our eyes cannot necessarily be the truth.

No, we don't "have to admit" anything of the sort.

#Sometimes we will distort or even falsify facts.

Nice admission!! Not all of us do this, I'll have you know. So who's this "we" you're talking about, Flambé McLiarpants??

>This is a matter of vital importance over which Goethe as well as every other competent author has taxed his ingenuity. Behind a fiction presentation, they project the truth.

The "truth" as they want it to be. NOT the reality, you'll notice. This is a religious "private language" definition of "truth", meaning, essentially, "what I like the sound of" and "what best serves MY purposes."

>I think several hundred people will appear in my novel and I hope you will understand that they all appear in the novel under assumed names, except for the first president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and second president Josei Toda.

>It is also probable that one living man will have two names or two persons will have one personality. It may also happen that three characters will be combined into one or that one man will represent countless others. - from the "Author's Foreword" here

This should make it clear that, in Ikeda's mind, "truth" is utterly DIVORCED from "facts". This is NOT history!

>These are a fiction, Ikeda's wish to portray the past as he wishes it had been (instead of as it was) - or what Ikeda feels is the most profitable portrayal - and this is a means of tricking the SGI membership into treating the fictitious events of these novels as if they were actual, factual history. [Spoilers] White Album 2: A Scene Analysis [Draft]

Author's Note: This is the finalized version of my essay and what I plan to submit to the writing contest. I'd like to thank anyone who took the time out of there day to read my essay and give me feedback on it. It was all incredibly helpful and helped shape my essay a little more and refine it. I would continue to revise it up until the deadline but I'm completely beat to be honest. I've spent WAY too much time doing this instead of things I should be doing, so I'll be going with this version of the essay. It didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted to, but if I ever find myself with time, I'd love to revisit it and expand on it even more.

Foreword and Preface: White Album 2 is a 12 episode animated series created in 2013 by the studio “Satelight”. The anime was adapted from a visual novel of the same name. For the intents and purposes of this essay, I will be attempting to analyze the three main characters of the anime and their interactions without delving into the visual novel’s material, meaning I will only be covering events that occur in the introductory chapter (what the anime adapts). Whilst some may find this harmful to the creative intentions of the writers who made the characters, as well as harmful to the analysis of the characters themselves, I find this necessary for two reasons.

  1. Translations of the Closing Chapter and “True Endings” do not exist. The only way to know anything of these chapters is through summaries that are no longer being hosted correctly, and thus inaccessible (webarchives).

  2. This essay is being submitted to /r/anime’s writing contest and as such I feel it fitting to keep the scope of my discussion to the anime. I may make a separate essay discussing the full events of CC+Coda, but not within this essay. The rabbit hole goes much, much, much deeper in this work. Nothing that could be covered in 4000 words.

In order to keep this essay of reasonable length and for the sake of my own sanity, I will be doing my full analyzation of the characters through the scope of a single scene at the end of episode seven (which I will dub as “the confession scene”). I will be discussing events that happen as a result of this scene as we

Hit or miss, I guess they never miss, huh?

Obviously, she has a beautiful face, but there are sma

This is happening right now.

SS:

Basically a response to this post

Couple of things

  1. I’m not a investor of shill for TSSA, just a dude that was into punk rock and was paying attention.
  2. My main point here is that Tom is sincere and not purposefully scamming people.
  3. I could be wrong.

Circa 1999 I was young and getting into punk rock.

😤 Why hit or miss is so intoxicating 😤

German HOW-TO masterpost

Obviously, she has a beautiful face, but there are sma

In his decorated career that spanned over 40 years, Mark has put out 20 full length metal albums.

All this melts together to create a unique and grandiose sound that separates Manilla Road from the legions of bands out the

some guy obsessing over that "hit or miss" cosplayer on 4chan

I have deduced the reason behind why and how this video is cursed. For one, this girl is highly attractive and her cosplay is actually good, appealing the eyes of watchers. Her cosplay also reveals her stomach which is very nicely shaped. Her smile is simply a work of art. It’s just very, very pretty and natural. Not much I can say on it. It just makes people happy. Well actually, that wasn’t my last point. I found myself watching the video and getting sad that it ended because it’s mesmerizing to watch. Than I realized that each time it repeated, I was hoping that it wouldn’t cut off at the end, thus rewatching it thinking, maybe there is more. Well then, yeah. I guess I’m done. I might of repeated myself a bit but I was trying to get the point across. I hope I helped people understand why they kept watching the video, and why they feel mesmerized by this girl.
