Phoenix Point in Review

I finally got around to finishing my game over the weekend. Amusingly, this play through started on January 1st RL and has roughly tracked 1 RL day per game day and ended on March 22nd in game. For the most part, I've enjoyed the game. The combat system scratches that tactical itch and the first person aiming is absolutely superb. However, the game suffers from some pacing issues as well as some balancing issues. I'll go into all of that here and summarize my campaign at the end.

The Good

The Class System

The class system in Phoenix Point is shockingly well balanced for how flexible and powerful the individual abilities are within it. Yes, there's a couple degenerate combos but for what it is, I'm really surprised there isn't more. I really enjoyed the process of theory crafting and testing out interactions in this game and that process rewarded me powerful squads that were able to take on the hardest difficulty of the game with little trouble.

Free Aim Mode

I will try to keep this short, I could gush about this if I let myself. This system gives you an elegant way of disabling enemies you can't kill, clearing out choice terrain and making shots in a way that other tactical games never have. I think we all remember depending on specific cover destroying mechanics in other tactical games that weirdly took perk slots for what amounted to shooting cover until it's gone. This game cuts out that middle man and lets you use that sniper rifle to take out that tree. I love it!

The EXP System

This doesn't get much mention, but really should. This game's progression system feels more real to me than most games. You start out with a troop in boot camp, they graduate and they might have passing grades but they are only just barely good enough. Their journey to greatness has only just begun. To be truly great, they need to earn it with blood, sweat and tears. It's through the trickle SP that they slowly become veterans.

The Gear

I think it's great that the gear in this game is purpose built rather than an upgrade treadmill. You want to use a flame thrower, build the flamethrower. You need to punch through armor on your sniper rifle, New Jericho has you covered. You want a a lot of range on your side arm, Synedrion has your hookup. That's not to say I don't have gripes (mostly in the expansions, which I'll talk about later), like for instance the flamethrower being wildly OP and then becoming a wet fart in the most recent update. Can we have it somewhe

"What do you want, Agent Keen? What do you really want?" Does Liz REALLY just want THE TRUTH or does she want acceptance and recognition?

When the show opens, we find ourselves presented with a criminal who wants to speak with a young agent only:

>Agent Cooper, you've overestimated your authority. I said I'll help you find Zamani, and I will. But from this point forward, there's one very important rule, I speak only with Elizabeth Keen

He speaks of a criminal father who abandoned her

>if anyone can give me a second chance, it's you. The two of us have overcome so much. I mean, look at you. Abandoned by a father who was a career criminal, a mother who died of weakness and shame.

We spent the first season wondering with Liz if he is her father, the criminal who abandoned her.

Even after his first denial in 1.10

>Growing up, Sam He raised me like his own. He was my whole world. But he wasn't my father.
>
>What is the question, Lizzy?
>
>Are you my father?
>
>[Pause] No.

After the second one in 1.21/22

>The only memory I have of my real father is from the night of the fire. I remember him pulling me out of the flames saving me.
>
>Yes. And knowing his identity would put you in grave danger.
>
>Why? Because he's a fugitive on the "Most Wanted" list?
>
>I loved Sam, Lizzy. Taking his life was of all the difficult things that I've done that may may be the most. But I did it to keep you from learning the name of your real father, to protect you. And you must understand-- having done that, I'm certainly not going to tell you who he was now.

And after Red told her her father had died in the fire,

>Tom told me something right before he died.
>
>What was that?
>
>"Your father's alive.”
>
>Lizzy, look at me. I'm telling you, with no uncertainty, your father is dead. He died in that fire.

Liz still did not believe him. She took DNA from him and ran a test in 1.02, which we learn of in 4.22, but was scared of the truth and did not read the results.

>I ran his DNA two weeks after we met. We were undercover in Montreal having dinner, and he said that everything I thought I knew about myself was a lie. It was intimate and weird. And when we thought we were made, he snuck out the back and I palmed his scotch glass. But when the envelope came back, I was scared it would confirm the devil was my father*. I didn't look at it. Threw it away.*

So, WHY has she not gone to the lab and asked for a copy of the results?

Because Liz wan

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE - Chapter 2 New Knowledge

Gretchen Wilson

Gretchen was fuming at her fiance. She knew he could get wrapped up in his work and be a bit insensitive from time to time, but it was part of him. She wouldn’t have agreed to marry one of the most brilliant minds on Earth if she wasn’t prepared to put up with some eccentricities. However, missing the rehearsal dinner…

“I can’t believe you,” the short brunette raged. “You missed our rehearsal dinner, and for what?”

“I…”

“I don't want to hear it!” she interrupted. “You are one of the smartest, and stupidest men I’ve ever known. How you managed to forget one of the most important days of our lives is beyond me.” Gretchen stared at her fiance with rage filling every inch of her 5 foot 3 frame. “If you missed that, how can I believe you’ll make it on time to the wedding? Is this even important to you?”

“I’m sorry princess, you know you mean the world to me,” Dale said quietly. He looked as if he was ready to crumble. “Work got in the way today, I’m so sorry.”

Gretchen’s heart melted slightly and her demeanor softened. As much as she hated it, she knew her husband-to-be was a very dedicated scientist who would be at least as dedicated to her as he was to his work. “Today was the new general wasn’t it,” she said in an attempt to give him a way to excuse his mistake.

“I forgot about that too,” mumbled Dale. “Major Bill Guere reminded me about that but I missed the new guy too.”

“Then you’d better have a dang good reason for missing multiple important engagements,” Gretchen said, her southern accent starting to make its presence known.

“I have a new angle to work on with wormholes,” he said sheepishly.

Gretchen was mildly surprised. “Really? Did you look into dark matter?”

“You sound like the boys at the lab,” Dale replied. “I’m actually looking at multi-point energy application.”

Gretchen thought for several moments. “That’s brilliant,” she conceded. “The application of energy at one point was always thought of to be the only way to open a wormhole, but if you can essentially ask for it to be opened from the other side…”

“Then you wind up with less energy application overall because the universe balances it out fortunately,” Dale finished. “That’s the theory. But it won’t amount to much if we can’t get the math to prove it. If it really is as simple as finding the right way to ask the universe to open the door, then this will revolutionize how we look at space travel moving forward!”

Gretchen smiled for the first time the entire

[indie perfume oils] "Does anyone know what's going on with AlphaMusk right now?" Another promising indie maker skids out, and then flames out amidst a hail of accusations, cross-accusations, and tears. Featuring gnomes and receipts in the form of math!

I'm a moderate participant in the world of "indie" (small batch, usually single maker, usually natural or naturally-based) perfumes. For perfume lovers, the world of indie fragrances can often be a major revelation---highly unusual scents, custom scents, and fandom scents--usually at very affordable prices compared to niche designer fragrances. There are a few older major players such as Nocturnal Alchemy and Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, but every few months or so, a fresh "house" enters the scene usually through etsy and Instagram.

Generally the routine follows a well-trodden path: a launch announcement with giveaways, small fanfare, and samples. A few people test it out, then come back with glowing reviews. Then more and more people hop on the bandwagon and start the hype train. Soon the "resale" market is established with people looking for rare or limited edition scents. Soon the new house is everywhere and everyone is trying them out.

For a house with established business best practices and/or marketing experience + no personal challenges this is the best case scenario.

But about half the time, there's a spectacular flame out that results in TONS of drama. (and that usually follows a well-trodden path too---flailing, blaming emergencies, a well-timed distraction, cross-accusations, and then a tearful retreat/flounce. This is all conducted under an absolute hail of back and forth from skeptics/the 'I told you so' crowd and rabid fans)

This is one of those second kind of stories.

Alphamusk launches September 2019. Shoppers are immediately taken by the maker's deft hand with scent blends. Alphamusk gets tons of positive attention in the form of gushing reviews on specific subReddits [that I won't link to as to avoid brigading] that cover these things.

Alphamusk starts pumping out collections with dozens of options. She also offers a complicated custom fragrance option with what turns out to be, mathematically, hundreds/thousands of options. By July of the next year, close to 300 perfumes were being offered for sale. One key aspect of the popularity of this house is the super-approachable price point. The owner was offering 5ML for like $8 or similar. Most indie fragrances are about $25 per 5ML plus $8 or so for shipping. A combination of "dollar sign eyes" and FOMO and hype meant an absolute feeding frenzy started occurring on the etsy page.

An important note here is that for most indie sellers of hand-blended perfumes, the perfumes are

A pre-writeup for metaboic acid/cuprous chloride amphetamine synthesis.

All articles linked on this post are sci-hub mirrors so if you are concerned about your government or ISP reporting you/prosecuting you for copyright infringement/internet privacy use a vpn, tor (onions), or don't open the articles. This is a long post so I tried so cut it up into reasonable sized parts using dividing lines. This post is a cross between a "research paper" and a write-up so it has an "abstract" and a materials section and such.

Enjoy!

So I this is a sequel to my previous post. If you have not read that one yet go and read it (or not, its just the theory behind this post). This post will include a pre-write up and is a good example of one of the process that needs to be undertaken before performing an unknown/experimental reaction (or even one from a research paper that is unverified). I will also discuss predicted problems and possible solutions. At the end I will ask advice on what reductive amination method I should attempt to as I would like to try a poorly studied/utilized one or a new method (I also do not want to mess with mercury and prefer amphetamine to meth-amphetamine). All precursor reactions will be run on a 0.5 molar scale or a 0.25 molar scale with the amphetamine synthesis being a 0.1 molar scale.

The theory:

Copper i salts complex with aryl halides (not fluorides (I think; it is irrelevant for this reaction)) and form a highly neuclophilic and stable complex somewhat similar to grignard reagents. The copper-aryl complex can undergo halogen exchange in a suitable solvent (acetone in our case). The complex will also add to active alkenes and will form alpha aryl-alkenes, and will displace the activating group.

Metaboric acid (boric acid dehydrated at 80C) will react with alcohols to form esters (though barely, more akin to silyl ethers). Boron halides are significantly more active and will also perform this reaction though much more quickly. Metaboric acid and boron halides will complex with metal halides (or other salts) and form [metal]-[acido]-borate complexes which in the case of metaboric acid is able to act as a pseudo halo-boron compound (in our case: [BXO2H]*[Copper i]). Upon reaction with an alcohol this complex will decompose to CuX and BO3H2R (mono alkyl borate). Borate esters of enols are known to be stable though the only reference I can find for their synthesis is a Chinese patent that uses acetone-hydrazone to make 2-iodopropene and then reacts that with Tetrahydroxy diboron

My College Roommate Kept a Dark Secret

When I was in college, I lived in a modest apartment just out of town. Given that I was trying to put myself through college, I had to save as much money as I could on rent. So, I moved in with two other roommates who were attending the same university I was. It had three bedrooms, which I was thankful for. I really didn’t want to be subjected to anyone’s nighttime snoring or anything else a college kid would get up to at night. Collin was a finance major, had ginger hair, and enjoyed playing 2K into all hours of the night. He’d wasted no time setting up his PlayStation in the living room before even unpacking any of his stuff. Ken was in his sophomore year studying linguistics. He was a quiet guy, kept to himself mostly. Only ever came out of his room to go to classes or pour himself a bowl of cereal. Most of the time, though, he was just out of the apartment. And then there was me, Tyler. I was studying psychology with the vague goal of working in academia to carry out important research. I was sure I would figure the specifics out along the way.

Collin and I had managed to get Ken to join us for drinks a couple of times, even got him out to a house party once. Whatever his scene was, partying certainly was not it. While Collin was knocking them back with the best of them, Ken was conservatively nursing a Bud Light, grimacing at every sip. I kind of felt sorry for the guy. I guess he had his own circle of friends since he was always out of the house so much. I certainly hadn’t seen or met any of them, though. Ken could be very reserved and standoffish a lot of the time. Even when talking to him he could be very distant, as if his mind was in some far-off place. If you didn’t know the guy, you might even think he was a bit of a dick. He really wasn’t, though. All three of us got along pretty well. No roommate spats or drama like some of my other friends on campus would lament about. I was tutoring high school math alongside college so I was happy that my roommates didn’t add an extra level of stress on top of that.

After about a year and a half of living together, Ken died. A car accident, we were told. Ken was, apparently, taking a cab out of the city late one night when a drunk driver veered out of the on-coming lane and crashed into them; head-on collision. Ken and the cab driver had both died instantly. Ken had been sitting in the front passenger seat, according to the police report. The drunk driver succumbed to his injuries in the hospital some t

Story contains a lot about markets, logistics, development, and the best and worst of human history. Not so much Space Marines nuking aliens.

If you enjoyed the trade negotiations and Senate politics in the Star Wars prequels, and wished that there was an entire standalone story consisting solely of those parts, this might be for you!

In response to all the helpful feedback I've gotten, I am making major revisions to the start of this story, especially focusing on chapters one through three. While this occurs, there may be some inconsistencies.

The names of the brave astronauts aboard the first manned FTL spacecraft will forever be recorded in the annals of human history as a triumph of human ingenuity, determination, and international cooperation.

However, what came immediately after would be far more remembered.

"Hello, people of Earth! Humans! Welcome to the galactic community."

A shocked planet watched on their screens as an utterly alien character that looked like it was lifted out of a bad sci-fi show spoke. The alien mouth movements of what could only be described as a frog creature did not match the very human words that came out of the robotic translator.

The aliens did not pirate TV networks, nor did they hack into important government websites. They simply broadcast this openly on satellite TV for anyone with an antenna to hear. And for anyone who did not, there were CNN and social media.

"First, we would like to congratulate you on your first successful use of the blink drive. That itself is a feat of enlightenment most species we monitor do not achieve. Indeed, the physics of it all is not only extremely complex, it requires the cooperation and sacrifice of many beings, over many generations."

The young people at Mission Control in Johnson Space Center patted each other on the back tepidly as they watched the green headed frog-like alien addressing their hard work on the main screen.

"We come in peace. We are representatives of the Galactic Trader Guild."

Some humans let out a sigh of relief. Others, skeptical, watched intensely on.

"We are not here to take your resources or your people. The thousands of planets and species in the galaxy live in total peace and harmony with each other. Regional conflicts on planets are inevitab

If you see a man with a red notepad, you need to read this as a matter of life and death.

I don't know his name. I don't know his age. I don't know where he lives and I certainly don't know how to find him. All that I know is that he's dangerous, and he's on the move.

I'm a government employee. I work in a research lab that develops experimental weaponry, primarily of the biological variety. I don't want to say much more than that, as this is already at massive risk of exposing my identity, but I will say that I'm not exactly an intern. I've seen things. I've studied things. I've created things.

I created him.

Or, better put, I re-created him. Confused? I don’t blame you. If you're reading this then you're well aware of the concept of legends and mythology; things that feed on our collective imaginations to grow more powerful, that live on our tongues as we utter their names and speak their stories, growing and evolving until they become a force of their own. Unstoppable. Unforgettable.

The man with the red notepad is one of them. I'm not positive, but I think his legend began in an e-mail chain from the late 90s. You know the type: forward this to 20 people in the next hour or some asshole is going to hack you to pieces with an axe. Except his went a little differently. In his, he would find his victims and draw them. Sometimes he would draw them drowning to death, other times he would draw them wasting away in a hospital bed, and other times he would draw them being cut open and pulled apart. It was a coin toss what version of the internet myth you'd encounter, but all of them had one thing in common. He would draw you, and you would die.

The thing about the man though, was that his sketches were thorough. It wasn't enough to simply make a stick figure labeled Sally and have that stick figure being impaled by a flagpole. No, in his sketches, Sally was a detailed work of art, with immaculate shading and perfect lines. There were exceptions to the rule of course: wrinkles, makeup, long hair, short hair -- things that would naturally change over the course of a lifetime. These never needed to be exact. As long as the core of the individual was on display, his nightmare worked its magic.

As such, his sketches would take hours. Sometimes they would take days. It was only after he was finished his sketches and signed them with his messy initials, that the death sentence would trigger.

When I received the assignment, I laughed. "Give life to a legend?" I remember saying to my boss. "You know April Fools was six months ago, right?"

Author’s Note: Welcome back to part four of the “I’m A Monster” series, if you haven’t listened and or read the first three chapters. They are listed below. (Also surprise! It’s a couple days early!)

Part One: I’m A Monster Created By The Government To Hunt Other Monsters.

Part Two: I’m A Monster Protecting Humanity, Things Are Getting Dangerous For Me…

Part Three: I’m A Monster Who Used To Hunt Other Monsters For The Government.

Doctor John and I had come across an abandoned cabin ten miles deep into the forest, it was evident to both of us that we would be staying there for the time being. It was also more than likely that us killing the avian creature had attracted the attention of other cryptids, and, they would soon be there to clean up what was left.

Dusk was approaching, the shadows of the trees were growing stronger. We needed to be efficient, I’ve stated in the past that I wasn’t keen on the idea of bringing others with me. But John was intelligent and much more of an asset than a liability.

I slowly approached the steps of the front deck to the cabin, crawling across the ground on all fours. Doctor John was close behind, putting in an effort to be as quiet as possible.

The cabin itself was in decent but not pristine shape. There was rotting spots in the wood, the steps to the deck were dented. The front left window had a crack running up the middle, vegetation was beginning to grow its way up the sides of the foundation.

I sniffed the air, seeing if I could pick up the scent of any sort of entity within the structure, but was relieved when I came up with nothing. It seemed safe, for the moment.

“I smell nothing, Doctor. It should be safe. But still be cautious of your surroundings.”

John nodded, clearly on board with my assessment.

“Well, you’re the expert.” He huffed lightly before following my lead up to the deck.

I sliced the remaining integrity of the lock off with my claws and pushed the door open, letting us both inside. I stood up in a bipedal fashion once in the foyer, the ceiling being about nine feet high, only giving me a foot of headroom.

In case there was anything inside that was masking its scent, John and I still did a sweep of the interior, wanting to be thorough about whether or not we were alone.

We found nothing but spider webs and dust. Along with an assortment of old silverware in the kitchen. Confirming we w

“I think I preferred the driving rain,” Thorson muttered to himself. He was a cramping, sweating mess by the time he reached the shrine atop the hill behind his base. Flickering flames within lanterns of stone greeted him and lit his path to the final set of stairs, flanked by the bold, red pillars of the Torii gate that, as Yamashiro had explained to him one day, separated the realm of the living from the realm of the gods. “No disrespect, but I have no time to stand on ceremony.”

The man took the stone steps two at a time until he reached the apex, the yellow and orange light of flame replaced by a calming, blue glow, its brightness a sad reminder of how many had been lost already after only half a year of war. It was easy enough to spot the cubes that belonged to Hornet, though they were not the bright yellow that Enterprise described at dinner. Instead they had faded significantly, looking more like dim sunlight. As Thorson drew closer he could swear that he felt something from them, but the nature of wisdom cubes never seemed to settle on one given explanation or mode of operation. He brushed against Yorktown’s first, bowing respectfully. As his fingertips glided over the smooth surface, a certain peace descended upon him. “I see. To fight at both Coral Sea and Midway like that and care for them both for so long? Rest easy then, Yorktown. Hammann will miss you, but I think she will understand in the end. We’ll take care of Enterprise. As for you-”

Thorson almost jumped as he laid his hands on Hornet’s last vestiges in the mortal world. His heart pounded and breathing quickened as Midway flashed before his eyes again, the sky utterly black and reaching out for him, or perhaps for her. So much remained obscure. As a mere human, shrouded in the fog of war, he called out anyway as he’d done for Arizona. You aren’t forgotten. I’m here, and so is Enterprise. Hold your ground. We’re coming. A small part of him expected Hornet to reply, in spite of everything that shouldn’t have been so. The maelstrom didn’t die down, but there was enough. She was there. She was fighting…

Day 64

I set out this morning intending to put in some practice behind the controls of the Cyclops while I picked up the final pieces needed to complete a prawn suit. After running into a few cliffs at full speed without damaging the cyclops, my confidence swelled, and I found myself exploring the darkest depths of this alien world.

Two hours into my exploration, I encountered a thriving ecosystem of bioluminescent creatures. Turning the lights off on my ship revealed galaxies of sparkling sea life clustered around a narrow, but unfathomably deep chasm splitting the ocean floor.

Drawn to the lights, I followed them deeper and deeper into the ocean. The ship dove for minutes through empty water before coming to a small shelf protruding from the cliff wall. Resting on this shelf was a large leviathan skeleton; narrow ribs leading to giant jaws which were imposing even without their encompassing skin.

Up until I saw this skeleton the leviathans had been a terrible force of nature, unrelenting, indestructible, almost god-like in their power. An invincible agent of a planet that wanted nothing more than to eradicate me. But this memento mori changed the way I looked at life on this planet. It showed me that the leviathan is just another animal. Powerful, and savage yes, but brutal and unknowing, much like the lions or the tigers which humans evolved to outcompete, out survive, and eventually eradicate from existence.

This symbol that even these great beasts are vulnerable reminded me that the only constant throughout the universe is that humans survive. We made it past ice ages, famines, floods, and droughts in our infancy. Grew to build great cities and cars and technology, until we killed the very planet that birthed us. Then, undeterred, we took to the skies; inventing warp gates and colonizing the galaxy.

As these thoughts surged through my head I got out of the ship and swam a lap around the dead leviathan: rejoicing in my survival and letting the small flame of hope breathe a bit longer. I was still dancing

Until the Enemy is Us

The Xandarths from u/mrducky78 's The Fermi Paradox seem to have an unbeatable setup. It's hard to imagine their empire falling without a deus ex machina of an invasion from another galaxy or the Deus sans machina of their being the beast from Revelation and the final judgement is coming soon.

But i think i've found a more home-grown solution.

Mr. Ducky's story is eminently readable, so whether this is the same species in the same universe, or a different species with the same name and strategy, i see no reason to waste time rewriting the details of how they maintain their control. Without further ado...

============

Everyone knows how the Xandarths maintained their empire. It is equally common knowledge that it was the humans who finally brought about its fall.

What is not well understood is how the humans accomplished this feat.

The pieces of the puzzle were there, it was only that no one had realized there was a puzzle to assemble.

Earth's pathogens jumped species at an astonishingly high rate compared to those of other worlds.

Humans were compulsive anthropomorphizers, projecting their own attributes onto animals, machines, inanimate objects, and even abstract concepts.

Humans found many of earth's species remarkably easy to domesticate--to the point that in a few cases there was some question as to whether it had actually been the humans who had initiated the relationship. They were not unique in having domesticated a predator species. That they had then put that predator species to work guarding its former prey--and convinced the domesticated prey species that it had nothing to worry about--was unheard of.

Humans were far from the only species to wage intra-species warfare. They were, however, the only species whose internal wars could turn genocidal in the absence of at least sub-species level divergence.

Few of earth's predators would attack humans. This had been true even before humans developed the numbers and technology to overwhelm any potential threat. Those animals that had the size or strength or numbers to prey on humans often would do so only under conditions that were equally likely to result in cannibalizing their own.

Most species required a fairly advanced understanding of genetics before they could engage in even rudimentary genetic engineering. Humans, in contrast, had

Positive End to a Multiphase SSRI Nightmare: My Opinions

Let me start with the due forewarnings. I used the word "opinion" in the title very deliberately. My story and the information here is just my experience and the personal knowledge I derived from it. I am not a healthcare professional. I am not a councilor, therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist. Listen to your doctors and your body/mind. Lexapro and SSRIs work for people, they may work for you. This is in no way a reflection of the medicine, rather a reflection of my body in relation to it. My only hope is that this writing helps someone in someway. This will be lengthy, see bottom for TL:DR.

Rant: THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH POSITIVE STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE LEAVING LEXAPRO BEHIND. I cannot stress this hard enough and I have no confidence it will ever change. I simply hope that if you find yourself in a situation like I did at one point, desperate for help or positive reassurance regarding Lexapro use and withdrawals, that you will understand that the ratio of negative to positive experience reports you will find on the internet (especially outside of reddit) is WILDLY SKEWED. People do not report their positive experiences because they hopefully have become well and have no reason to linger or post in places of information. They move on with their lives. Please don't let the tsunami of nightmare stories flood your already vulnerable position. Place your sandbags vigorously and strategically to prevent this. If you can't stay away from the information, actively remind yourself about the ratio and try to counterbalance a negative anecdote with a positive one if you can. This is just my humble contribution to the stories with positive endings.

My Story Summarized: To keep this as brief as possible (...its's so long tho) but still retain the pertinent information I will try to hit the high spots only. I grew up in a upper middleclass household with great parents and an even greater extended family. My parents divorced when I was in my 20s but while I was growing up at home there was very little drama. I am an only child and was certainly spoiled.

Being a child of the 1980s, I was of course monitored for ADHD symptoms by my teachers and family. At the time everyone was somewhat ironically hyper-aware of the hyperactive symptoms of ADHD but were generally clueless beyond that. If you weren't bouncing around and having significant trouble in school then you didn't stand out as having any problems. As we now know this left a huge swath of children

Lab Series for High School Chem to Lead up to Identification Final

Hey everyone! First year teacher here, and one of the classes I’m teaching is high school chemistry. I have six preps this year and after receiving advice from many of you, I’d like to focus on my chemistry class this year and make that one as good as I can.

I’d like the final exam in the class to be lab based. Students would be provided with an unlabeled substance and would need to perform tests to identify what it is. They would then need to write a short paper to justify their answer based on their data.

Has anyone in this group done this before? How well did it work? I did this in college, but obviously had much more equipment available and a higher level of education at the time I did it.

My biggest hurdle is trying to come up with a series of labs that could be done throughout the year that would lead up to and build the necessary skills for the final. Does anyone have suggestions on where I could look for this?

(Is this too ambitious of an idea for an 11th/12th grade chemistry class?)

The Flash #19 - The Mechanical Monster

DC Next Proudly Presents…!

The Flash: The Mechanical Monster

One-shot

Written by JPM11S

Edited by AdamantAce and PatrollinTheMojave

⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡

My name is Barry Allen and I am the fastest man alive! When I was eight years old, my father, Jay Garrick, the original Flash, sacrificed himself to save the multiverse. Not soon after, I watched my mother die while surrounded by a tornado of red and yellow lightning. For years, I worked as an ordinary CSI for the CCPD, trying to help bring justice to my city in the only way I could, until I was struck by lightning that is. Now, at speeds faster than sound, I try to live up to my father’s legacy and protect the Twin Cities from those who seek to do them harm as the Flash!

⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡ ⚡

Metropolis - Present Day - Two Months After the Attack on CCPD

It was a rather chill February day, the wind a cold slap across the face to all who trod along the bustling streets of Metropolis, bundled up in their various winter wear that felt utterly useless when their noses seemed to have frozen off despite it. Yet even despite his compassionate nature, the Flash felt very little for the people as he bounded across the very same streets, the bitterness amplified tenfold because of how he speared through the air, turning his face nearly the same shade as his scarlet suit. Though such gnawing pain did at least spurr the speedster along his way faster, already thunderous legs beating with renewed haste as he soon streaked up the side of the famous Daily Planet building.

A glimmering light shone off the iconic golden globe of the tower, a blinding sight that was quick to greet the Flash as he arrived at its base. Though perhaps greet was less than the operative word, as the very moment the speedster came to a halt, he was overwhelmed by the sheer luminosity of the thing, causing him to stumble and nearly fall back from whence he came. With the blue-clad boy scout that hovered just beside the hero though, such a thing would have been far from problematic: Catching people off falling buildings was Superman’s speciality, after all. Though Jon Kent did seem to do less of it than his father did. And speak

It felt weird walking down the corridor that early in the day. It felt at once quieter and more peaceful, and like she wasn't supposed to be there. But she had told Mark she'd be there by 12, and she wasn't about to break her word the very next day. She rang the doorbell, its electronic buzzing breaking the silence.

"Who is it?" replied Mark, his voice strained.

<"Arnd.">

"Door, open! Uh..." the human replied, and both he and Arnd knew he had made a mistake.

Arnd heard a pair of heavy thuds, and the door soon opened. She was greeted by the sight of Mark frantically pulling on a shirt, a pair of dumbbells lay before him, subtly sunk into the floor. The brief glimpse she caught of his torso before it was covered revealed that it was slick with sweat, the sight of which unnerved her, but she couldn't blame the man for it in the least.

Mark picked up his weights and re-racked them. "Sorry you had to see that." he said shakily, still panting from the strain of his workout.

<"Not a problem."> replied Arnd, taking a seat beside him on the sofa as he dabbed his forehead dry.

Mark shuffled away, grabbing a crutch. "I'm gonna go take a shower so I don't stink this place out. I won't be long." Arnd nodded, and Mark half-walked, half-hobbled away and into his bedroom, using the single crutch like a cane for the lone foot that remained injured.

The door to the bathroom shut behind Mark. 'I knew I'd fucking forgotten something!' He sighed at his own failing, and undressed.

The shower was loud enough to fill the entire room with the sound of artificial rain. The sense of serenity the noise would have given was dampened by the fact that these wintry months swapped rain for heavy snowfall, giving it an unnatural sensation that Arnd conceded was all too fitting for Mark. With nothing else to do but wait, small details of Mark's room came to her that she didn't notice before: He appeared to have upgraded his television further, with Arnd recognizing a high-end Saken brand projection strip in place of the nodes she and Mark had repaired; he had brought in more weights than he started with, even personalizing each of the bars and weights with a laser engraved message in English, 'human' being the only word

She had hit a wall on the rescue mission front, [Alice] had been adamant about not revealing themselves further by sending a rescue team, and launching a mission in secret would have required sabotaging half of the station. Even if she thought she could get all the comms and scanners down she wasn’t crazy enough to actually try it. Widespread sabotage or ship hijacking was a dangerous proposition, and she doubted [Walter] and the others would want her to put the station in jeopardy for them.

After 3 solid tenth days of appeals, requests, and contemplating sneaking off while scouting, she had to admit a rescue mission wasn’t going to happen.

But that doesn’t matter now! She thought giddily as she rushed to the docks. They are still alive, and making contact!. Her hope was warring with caution and hope was currently winning. Like most of the station she had followed the messages from the Humans with rapt attention. CPI government in Kerala and Randia's far left circlejerk

Disclaimer : this post is not to incite regional flame wars and kick people when they are down, but this is simply to expose Randia's hypocrisy. This is in no way against Kerala as a state and Malayalees. Every state has good and bad people. The agenda here is to to point out the lack of outrage and even apologetic behaviour by Randia when it comes to crimes and negligence by the extreme left party of their choice.

Today, there was a randia post about Kerala Health Minister being on the cover of Vogue India : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/jqy4nt/kerala_health_minister_k_k_shailaja_on_vogue/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Everyone is congratulating the Kerala model even as we see our fellow Malayalees suffer under a huge surge of Covid cases. There is also no one calling out the CPI government of Kerala for this surge. Some users are even blaming railways, media and other states. People calling out the bias are downvoted to hell

There have been cases of false reporting from every state, including Kerala but guess how much traction the post about Kerala government reporting false cases got : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/j2ioeg/kerala_lab_issued_2000_fake_covid19_negative/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Also another case when the said Health Minister from CPI endorsed homeopathy for Covid 19 treatment (article by the Deccan herald). The post got less than 100 upvotes. Remember when some random nobodies spoke about cow dung and all the randians could talk about was that? No one is calling out Kerala government here. The post : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/ipbxv7/kerala_health_minister_endorses_homoeopathy_for

Here is a six month old post from Karnataka about fake cases and observe the comments again : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/gaotl7/coronavirus_karnataka_might_not_be_doing_well

And here is the news about people who are no way involved in decision making using cow dung to prevent covid. Again observe the comments and the upvotes : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/fg7mdi/to_protect_themselves_from_coronavirus_these/

Again rape news from Kerala and suddenly it is the single individuals fault and not "rape culture" and "failure of the system" because it is a CPI run state : https://np.reddit.com/r/india/comments/ini107/woman_who_tested_covid_positive_raped_by/

Another horrific gang rape and there's no outrage, no "india shithole" remarks, no awards on the post : https://np.reddit.c

The Jackal Guards (Beta Reader test)

Chapter 1: Maritime Menace

Gothenburg, Sweden

May 28th, 2025, 23:11 Hours

The night in Gothenburg shrouded the city in a blanket of diamond blue sky and the emerging new moon. While the citizens slept soundly through the night or went about their late-night activities, a lone figure walked about along the length of the Älvsborgsbron bridge. The figure was a rather tall person even for local standards with a 7 feet stature who wore a black hood over his head. The piece of clothing seems to conform a bit tightly to his body with signs of tear starting to show in the form of stiff walking. If one looks down, one could see that this person didn’t wear pants. He instead had a wolf tail hanging down and his legs appeared to look rather muscly with what could be armor plates on them.

As he walked towards the middle of the bridge, he stopped, and took a look at the city’s port, seeing a ship, in particular, leaving port. The hull was unmistakably part of a hydrofoil styled cruise ship with its aqua blue paint color while the upper deck and bridge areas of the ship appeared to be that of a research ship with sonar on the bowl, radar mast, submersible on the rear deck and a helipad. On the board sides of the ship bear its name, “Calypso”. The vessel plows forward cutting its way through the waves as it went out to the open sea.

At this point the figure made a sudden move, he timed for when the vessel was about to pass through the bridge he was on and tied a bungee cord on the bridge’s railing. He made a running start and jumped backflipping over the railing and glass wall of the bridge. He came down on the bowl of the ship with a thud and crackling clank sound of metals meeting one another. His body assumes a kneeling pose before raising his head and torso upright revealing his true form to be an anthro robot wolf.

This robot wolf has a jet black chassis with amber red LED optics and a Herculean physique sporting rolling biceps, a muscular pectoral perfection, and six-packs on his abs. His limbs are wolf-like with claws and paw pads, his armor plates appeared to give off the visage of an ancient Greek bronze cuirass (Breastplate armor). Complete with oval nut shaped pauldrons, gauntlets on his wrists, and greaves for his legs as well as knee and elbow pads for maximum protection and optimal mobility.

He ducked behind an anchor winch on the top deck and crouch down for a moment to collect his thoughts and tapped his right ear. The radio dialing brought up a

You don't have to be spiky, but please don't be well-rounded

I'm possibly the least well-rounded person you will ever meet.

I mean it. I suck at so many things. Just terrible. I can't do math, or draw, or cook, or sing, or act, or include the unbelievable artwork from my artist, Felicia Tzeng, on Reddit , or plan, or make a competent TikTok , or lift heavy things, or dress myself, or promote stuff correctly, or lightly edit a piece once it's live without the entire Goddamn universe crashing in upon me, or sit through a movie without biting my nails, or be normal even when I really need to be...the list goes on and on.

I also wouldn't necessarily call myself "spiky." If I had a spike, it would be writing. But it's not like I'm out here winning Pulitzers. There's a reason I put my stuff out for free on Reddit instead of slamming it into a book. I tried that once before. No one bought the book.

But along with writing, I'd also say I'm quite good at college admissions info, explaining new concepts and ideas...talking about myself, telling jokes, ummm, analyzing handwriting, ummm, Playing Smash Bros at bars, ummmmm…

See? Not that spiky.

But I get enough nice DMs to know I'm good at what I do. It makes me feel grateful for all the support I've gotten and proud that I've been able to capitalize on and combine what I am good at to make myself happy and give back to the world.

That leads us to today's question:

Hi! I'm a rising sophomore. I've read most of your blogs, and I think they're gold and make a ton of sense. But they also freak me out. How am I supposed to find a weird hobby? On top of doing well in school? And having amazing extracurriculars? And family stuff? And how am I supposed to have a unique life so I have "unique" half ideas? It's so much work, stress, pressure, everything. I guess my real question is do you have any tips to manage the stress of applying to college or thinking about college in the future and trying to apply all the stuff I read on the internet and be a good, cool, passionate, driven person that gets enough sleep?

Sorry, no.

  • Mattie

...Yes, I have an answer.

This question cuts to the heart of what I find to be the single worst thing about college admissions. It is an objective fact that getting into college is not conducive to living a fun, care-free teen life. I'm smacked in the face with this fact every October 31st. That's the night before the first

The Frozen Wasteland

Written by Aqib Ali (reuploaded with better formatting)

The icy wind rushed across Major John Reins’ insulated face as he leaped off the MV-22 Osprey. His combat boots penetrated the fluffy blanket of soft snow which covered the glistening ground as far as the eye could see. The comfortable warmth of the humming helicopter rapidly faded as the harsh sub-zero gusts of the South Pole welcomed his arrival. He double-checked his pistol and battle rifle before proceeding to check his specially adapted combat armour via his standard issue wrist-mounted PDA. He was on his own now.

His headset crackled. “Reins, do you copy? Over.” A deep voice growled in his ears.

“This is Reins; I can hear you but the line’s not too good. Over,” he replied, crouching into the snow to get out of the wind as it danced through the dry atmosphere. “The suit mods are stable though.”

“Good. Sorry about the comms, I can’t do anything about that; you’ll have to bear with it for now. It’s the best we can do at the moment due to your secluded location,” Colonel Hanson said.Reins could hear the tell-tale clatter of a keyboard in the background.

“So, have you sent me here to freeze my balls off or something? Think I’m a bit rusty after pushing pencils in the office for a month?” Reins grinned.

“Not happy with the promotion?” Hanson teased. “Sending the details through now…”

A notification popped up on Reins’ PDA. It marked his objective one mile south of his current location beside a small mountain range. “Could’ve dropped me off closer.”

“The mission required the talents of a high-ranked ranger. Besides, you know we can’t risk our expensive equipment getting damaged. Any idea how much one of those choppers costs?” Hanson replied. His tone became more serious. “You should have received the co-ordinates of a top-secret British research station. The British authorities have tasked us with investigating what happened to their staff who went dark a few days ago. They didn’t give me much information except that they were conducting geological surveys in the nearby cave system. Keep your guard up. Your mission is to make your way there by foot, examine the area and relay back what you find. Is that understood?”

“Yes, sir,” Reins confirmed. “But we both know ‘Geological surveys’ is a load of bullshit. I bet they were fucking around with something they shouldn’t have been. They always like to call us to clean up their mess once it’s too late; never before people start dying.” Reins got up f

"Someone help. I need help": Where is Monica Renee Bowie––a 34-year-old woman who was abducted in the parking lot of her upscale apartment complex in Atlanta, GA on the night of July 5, 2007?

Hi everyone! I'm back again with another lesser-known case––this time from Atlanta, GA. I want to give a quick s/o to u/Beardchester for the writeup they did on this case three years ago which gives a good initial outline of the case.

"A go-getter from the first day she learned to walk"

Monica Renee Bowie grew up in a middle-class neighborhood on Pittsburgh’s North Side with her mother, brother, and two sisters. She was close with her family and strove to set a positive example for her siblings by excelling in school–– “if you sat with Monica, she would wow you,” recalled her cousin, Lateshya Ellis. After graduating from Perry Traditional Academy, she enrolled in the accounting program at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania where she was chosen as the class valedictorian in 1996.

The ambitious Bowie was enchanted by the hustle and bustle of Atlanta and decided to relocate there in 2003. She got an apartment with her friend Danyell Sparks and the pair took full advantage of all the activities the city had to offer. Bowie first worked as a stripper for six weeks after her arrival in Atlanta but she had since redirected her attention to starting her own legitimate business.

Brenda Watkins, the manager of the Blue Flame, the club where Bowie worked, recalled her as a “nice girl, real nice.” She said that while Bowie primarily “kept to herself,” she was also “very ambitious”––Watkins was not sure if Bowie started stripping to invest in another business or not but she noted that she came in the club on occasion to “pass out new music from new artists.” Her first venture, Go2girls, was a hip-hop production company and she later opened LaCoca Wear Clothing, a boutique off Metropolitan Avenue.

Bowie had come a long way since her arrival in Atlanta––she successfully got two businesses off the ground and had found a good group of friends. “She didn’t allow negative things around her. That was her.

Author: MajorParadox

Arc: The Future

Set: 55

###Developments

Two men in protective gear were talking.

What is this? Lois couldn’t even understand what they were saying.

The one with black hair took off his helmet and said something Clark had explained meant “progress.”

Wait, when did Clark explain that? Lois recalled telling Clark about a dream. Was she dreaming again?

“Tell me of your progress, Kem-L,” the other man said.

“My work goes well, Fen-M” the one named Kem-L replied.

Wait, I can understand them now?” They continued talking about Krypton’s goals for its salvation and protection, but nothing specific grabbed Lois’ attention. Until...

“The Eradicator will ensure our society lasts as long as Krypton itself,” Kem-L continued.

Lois woke up in a start.

“You’re okay,” said Clark, holding his wife closely. “The Krypton dream again?”

“<Yeah>,” said Lois, catching her breath. “<But this time was different. I could understand them.>”

Clark’s eyes fixated on her. “Lois,” he said, his voice grave. “You’re speaking Kryptonian.”

Lois closed her eyes tightly. “What’s happening to me?” she asked.

Later

While Lois and Clark sat at the table talking, Jon kicked a large rubber ball across the living room. Krypto ran after the ball and sniffed it before Jon picked it up and threw it toward the couch.

The dreams about Krypton had been happening off and on for weeks. But this was the first time Lois understood what they were saying. This wasn’t some kind of stress or unresolved feelings about Clark’s Kryptonian heritage. Something was happening to her.

“And that man,” asked Clark. “The one named Kem-L. He said ‘The Eradicator’?”

“Yes,” said Lois, taking a sip of coffee.

“That can’t be a coincidence,” said Clark. “The Eradicator tried to infect me when he was disabled. Could he have gotten you too?” Clark looked closely at his wife.

Lois lifted an eyebrow. “What are you looking at?” she asked.

“I’m scanning you,” Clark explained.

“Normally that’d sound more romantic,” Lois groaned.

“Doggy ball,” said Jon as he tossed the ball onto Krypto’s hea

My theory on the entire series

My theory (long sorry). Clarke has been the key since she was a child, Becca has been manipulating everything from a young age, if you don’t choose wisely during the test (aka judgement day, symbolism not literal) your whole race is wiped out like Bardonians. Clarke has to die and transcend to save the human race. The symbolism of the 00s breaking in the 100 is that Clarke needs to break the cycle or else everything will keep repeating.

I think most look at Clarke wrong. Death has already been determined, it's going to occur and she came across it to try and do better. Earth was dying before she was even born. Bombs dropped & damaged earth before her, no energy source, a virus. Mt Weather was torturing & experimenting on ppl before her. The Primes were murdering ppl before her. She's the key b/c she needs to break the cycle (aka the 00s of the 100/infinity symbol crashing together)

Clark is the only one who got Allie 1.0 (chip), Allie 2.0 (flame), mind drive but also what we learned about mindspace and from the memories of those throughout the series who took the flame. Understand her Dad’s role in all of this (trying to help everyone) and what Clarke was telling us S1 in the intros

Becca is a genius. All the tech is hers, from before Anaconda to the Ark (S4,E13 we learn from Monty) to Eligius and the planets to the Flame. Think of our own computers, everything we work on & where is it saved, the cloud; a backup, a location just in case. Becca worked on all this & to think she didn’t create a backup for such an important thing as the flame would be silly. The flame has to be actual technology that can back up in multiple places.

Allie 1.0 gave us a glimpse when she went to the Ark. Sheidheda a glimpse when he jumped via WiFi. We learned about Lazercom and how it can break through atmospheric conditions (all designed by Becca). Think Eligius mainframe and Clarke, Becca's lab back on earth.

There’s a reason she also put a phrase so the person can actually ascend - Seek higher things. But we also learn Goodbye for Now (Becca 7,08 and Clarke 3,16) shuts it down. I believe at that point, when the person dies and the phrase is said, everything is backed up. Clarke got the flame, then Madi. Clarke's was removed with the phrase, but not Madi. Clarke also has the mesh, which could serve as another backup, hence why Madi is drawing items.

We also learn, when Clarke is fighting Josephine, that some memories are hidden, th

Reworking Fox Marvel and Raimi's Spider-Man into a Cinematic Universe part VIII: Fantastic Four

As the title implies, this is the 8th installment of a Fix Series:

First (X-Men)

Previous (Punisher)

So, before we begin, I want to say something. The idea for this Fixverse came to me more than 1 year ago. As my Username implies, I am a big FF fan, and I wanted to see some movie adaptation of them done good. Reading through fixes here, I found a fix about X Men, where they said Sony and Fox had talked about making a Universe, and I thought "Wow, this is an idea I would like to see done!" Then I realised Fox and Sony couldn't do it so my mind went full Thanos and I chose to do it myself.

(Note: I haven't been able to gind the post yet, If I do, I'll link it)

Cut forward to 8 weeks ago, I had just started out on reddit, and I wanted to do something meaningful that could also get me some karma. So I said "remember that idea I had? What about I turn it into a weekly post on r/FixingMovies?" I watched Xmen again, sat on the Sofa, and started typing. I thought "Well, if I post weekly, it will take me 1 month to get to the FF as I first intended." Then Hulk, Daredevil and Punisher were added, more time was taken and now, well? I am here. So thank you for the support. I have planned much more than the original 2000-2019 only fixing already existing movies plan, and I have now got a 2000 to 2030s plan, adding loads of movies and events, and, hopefully, doing something really cool. I hope you are gonna keep reading, because we are just finishing to get started.

So, Fantastic Four. Great characters, Meh movie, and I need to twist it as I already entablished them to exist. Stay on board, because this will be fun. As this is one of my first complete overhauls (You could say Hulk was the first, but most inspiration was from the Videogame), I am gonna explain some of the montage and stuff I made and why as we go along. Casting additions and changes are going to be at the end to dodge spoiling.

Now on to fixing.

ACT I

-We open with a much different montage, to explain the quartet's history. Main inspirations for this were Iron Man and Watchmen. What we see are headlines. First, we see minor headlines on how "Reed Nathaniel Richards gratuated from Mit and Ha

My Bleeding Heart

This is about a few different things, which may seem unrelated, but hear me out.

It’s about a secret government program from the 60’s and 70’s which you almost certainly have never heard of, but which has immensely affected your life.

It is about the Woodstock festival of 1969, and how it changed the world forever.

And it is about me.

See, I have a condition called ASD, or Atrial Septal Defect. Literally means I have a hole in my heart. A small one, but a hole nonetheless

It has always caused me problems, ever since I was born. I fatigue easily and get irregular heartbeats at times. As such, my parents mostly kept me out of intense physical activities. So I mostly stayed indoors and read. I did well in school.

As I got older, I had to avoid many of the things my peers were getting into. I didn’t drink, in fact I never have to this day. Drugs were becoming more mainstream, but I never touched them. My general seclusion and introverted nature meant I didn’t really interact with girls much either, even though it was the “generation of love”.

I just walked the line I had been placed on, obediently, doing everything I could to earn the praise and respect of my conservative parents. They were pretty much the only people in my life back then, and they had come from hard backgrounds. The depression, a world war, and a lifetime of struggles.

They didn’t want me to have to go through what they did.

I worked hard for them.

I got my degree in neurobiology at Harvard. It was a pretty new field, and Dr. Kuffler had only started teaching it there in 66 if I recall. I was one of his first students.

I did very well in my studies, and went on to get a doctorate myself. I wrote my dissertation on how stimuli in a person’s environment can affect the way they think and behave. I was very passionate about it.

My dad was always worried about the war. Despite his hardline stance against communism, one I shared, he had been on the beaches of Normandy and knew what horrors awaited those who were being shipped to the other side of the world. I suppose it was part of why he had so enthusiastically supported my academic activities, despite that he never really understood them.

Deferment wasn’t the only benefit either. They came to me eventually, men from the government. They were interested in my work.

They offered me a job. They told me they wanted to change the world. To change people. To make them better.

They said other things too. That liber

The Ivory Gate

When age fell upon the world and wonder went out of the minds of men; From the gift of sentience to the final curtain call, there are dreams. Worlds shrouded deep beneath the veil of the human psyche. I often wonder if the majority of mankind ever to pause and react to the very wonders that wander between the gaps in our mind. My name is Dr. Gilman, I've been an Oneriologist for 37 years. I was hired by the academy to study and record brain patterns to be used for cancer research. Oftentimes many of my studies required the participants to be asleep in order to receive adequate results, causing the use of Melatonin supplements to be extremely common throughout my tests. I had 17 volunteers supplied by the university to call upon whenever new data was required to progress research. The volunteer board was made up of college students who were promised a free semester once the testing process was finished. This led to a level of dedication that I've yet to see replicated by any other of my patients. Being the sole member of the research team, I had the pleasure of interacting with the majority of volunteers personally. I had even grown a friendly correspondence with some of them, which is why I began to grow concerned over time.

It’s no secret that the use of Melatonin supplements for extended periods of time results in outlandish and disconnected dreams. But the level of fully lucid, hyper-imaginative dreams was significantly more than anything I've seen throughout my career. My volunteers would return to me and speak of a thick wooded forest and a large Ivory gate hidden deep within their dream cycles. A scarlet flame and the hidden truth locked within their very soul. I pitied the overworked college students, and after some bickering with the higher ups was able to provide all volunteers with optional sleep therapy to improve their mental health. I figured Yale university was a stressful environment, and sometimes that stress could bleed out into one's subconscious thoughts. That was before I started having the dreams myself.

On the first snowfall of December, I lie down on my bed ready for sleep to envelop me. Instead of the familiar blanket of darkness I was greeted by a frigid and dark valley. I was fully conscious, able to exercise deep thought and complex motor skills, a very uncommon phenomenon within dreams. I look onwards towards the horizon, an illuminated stone path lay beyond the hill. The cobblestone path leads to a strange and alien forest

Tales of stupidity

Greetings Uncle Moonhorse, Sango, and the rest of the Moon cult. Happy holidays to all, and let us all say goodbye to the shit show that was 2020.

Now, you remember the story I shared with you about the Sayori plushie? Hearing it being read by you made me cringe at myself because I made no attempt for it to be funny at all. And I remembered going back and fixing several grammatical errors before you read it. So instead of hastily rambling my stories through a phone, I upgraded and am now typing this all on a Commodore 64, and taking my time to tell you all this and make it funnier. Because even though I'm a high school junior with mild depression, I can do so much better, and make this be actually entertaining.

Also, all of these stories have been posted on r/storiesaboutkevin, but I have remastered them all for your reading pleasure.

So, without further ado, let the pain begin

The time I almost set my Uncle’s house on fire by hiding hot embers

So this first story is a bit of a confession I guess. I don’t look back and laugh at myself, but think to myself “man, was I a fucking idiot.” And maybe I still am one? Who knows. But feel free to laugh, because I do think this is funny, even though I’m not laughing.

But anyways, this happened five or six years ago, and I was spending the weekend at my Uncle Dave’s house. A ritual we had was that I would light a fire in the fireplace, someone would put on a movie, and I would share the couch with two (now three) Chocolate labs named Mishu, Daisy May, and Olive.

And when my Uncle and Aunt fell asleep, I decided to play with fire that night. And although I didn’t burn myself, and this was indoors, I’m pretty sure that I would have been mauled by Smokey the bear if he found out what I was doing. Because I was doing dumb shit like lighting paper airplanes on fire and glide them while ablaze, shoveling hot embers and then burying them in the ash bucket, laying newspaper on top of the fire so they can ascend into the chimmeney while on fire, lighting sticks on fire and call them “torches” and carry them around the house, even though they emitted less light than a candle. You know, shit a ten or eleven year old kid should NOT do.

I even vaguely remember propping my iPad on something and taking a time lapse of the fire burning. It was pretty cool, except for the part where I was in the time lapse for a few frames sort of kneeling down with a shit eating smile, and having my hands around my crotch as if I was p

Starship Development Thread #8

Quick Links

^(JUMP TO COMMENTS) ^| ^(Alternative Jump To Comments Link)

^(SPADRE LIVE) ^| ^(LABPADRE LIVE) ^| ^(LABPADRE DIRECT)

Overview

Starship development is currently concentrated at SpaceX's Starship Assembly Site in Boca Chica, Texas, where preparations for the first Starship Version 1 build (SN1) are underway. Elon hopes this article will fly in the spring of 2020. The Texas site has been undergoing a pivot toward the new flight design which will, in part, utilize a semi clean room welding environment and improved bulkhead manufacturing techniques. Starship construction in Florida is on hold and many materials, components and equipment there have been moved to Texas.

Currently under construction at Kennedy Space Center's LC-39A are a dedicated Starship launch platform and landing pad. Starhopper's Texas launch site was modified to handle Starship Mk.1 and a larger Superheavy capable mount is expected to be built on the previously undeveloped east side of the property. At SpaceX's McGregor Texas site where Raptor is tested there are three operational test stands, and a fourth is reportedly planned for SpaceX's Cape Canaveral landing complex. Elon mentioned that Raptor SN20 was being built near the end of January.

Hour of the Basilisk

Captain Pappadapolous had charge of the night phone at the Police Department. It had a mobile transfer system, but someone had to be there at the “nerve center” of the department, at least in his mind. The Dispatch office down the hallway enclosed the employees who worked in the communication hub. He considered himself the central figure. There’d been some personnel issues in that hub, and he wanted to be there to keep an eye on them. He screened calls on his radio, he had a habit of charging out to any call that he felt that the supervisors and officers would not be able to handle without him. He was a little rattled by the death of the evidence tech and felt a need to be on hand just in case...

He didn’t buy the story about, “toxins”. He’d read about how certain drugs and drug components could penetrate the skin and cause death. She’d likely been careless in her handling of some illicit substance… What was that? He paused in his contemplation and in the absent-minded manner in which he’d been playing a video game on the city’s computer. He’d felt some odd stir in the air and looked around for the source… nothing. As he prepared to resume his game, he felt a tug at the back of his mind… a desire to look over the front edge of the patrol office desk. An odd, musky odor emanated from that area. Probably a stale mop, stupid cleaning crew… he thought as he rose to peer over the edge and assuage his curiosity.

Those eyes! Those blazing pits of golden flame. They locked his gaze and showed him the depths of terror that resided within them and within his own, soon shattered and fading psyche. A later review of the surveillance recording may have shown a shadow that slithered through the lobby doors alongside a departing employee at the end of the late-night shift change.

August 13, 1969

I stayed away from my home for as long as I could manage. I needed fresh clothes at a minimum and frankly, I wanted to resume control of my personal space, my individual realm. I couldn’t hide from the situation forever. I stalked through the house by using a mirror to check around every corner and to look into tight spaces before I entered. I had a strategy, but it would take time. I picked up several items I needed and gathered some clothing. As I picked up the small suitcase, I heard the crash of a delicate object as it struck a hard surface. I was startled and dismayed. *I knew that it was some

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #5 - Round 2 Match 10 - Bert and Emilie "Dread" Delacroix vs John "Jack" Aurel

The results are in for Match 8.

Agnes and Arpeggi, in their shrunken states, continued to fight, surrounded by the rising flames of their lilliputian tower, fists flying and Stand blows being taken one after the other.

“You… Callous mother fucker!” Arpeggi cursed, Agnes feeling the singe of a heat blast both from behind and from launched wood. “We’re not aiming for a massacre!”

“You’re not,” Agnes spat out, then, pulling a tab on the table, a massive geyser erupting and launching his so-called ally away, “I don’t give a fuck about this place, and we’re in a Stand battle… And it’s all worthless, greedy scumbags watching! Let the fire spread! Let this place hit the ground so they see what someone with style can do!”

“You heard it here, folks! Agnes talked you all down… C’mon, where’s your passion! Don’t run out and away, c’mon! And here I thought you cared y’had money ridin’ on this…”

Conqueror Worm’s laughs reverberated as Glitch and William found themselves cooled by Ocean Eyes’ nectar, which found itself dissolving quickly but, for the moment, a functional barrier for the injured fighters, watching and listening to what happened.

“Th… They’re fighting each other up there…” William remarked, physically looking as though he was straining to force Ocean Eyes not to hurry up there and tear them a new one. “Glitch, we don’t have time to keep the flames at bay and call up another KST, and if I let Ocean Eyes up there it’ll eviscerate them, and-”

“What’s this? The kid is holdin’ back, afraid of his own Stand! Hey, kid, don’t hate this part of yourself! Ocean Eyes, it ain’t your enemy, that’s a part of you, what makes you special, so don’t be at odds with it! Embrace what it says, because it’s what YOU’RE sayin’!”

William was speechless, there, but his companion was less inactive in that time. Tiger “Glitch” Ricky simply hissed, then, her and her Stand hopping up out of the flames in an effort to brutally, mercilessly pounce upon the self-styled villain and the ally he had come to blows with. If they moved fast, they could bite through that shitty little twink’s neck right now!

Arpeggi grit his teeth, scrambling to find his footing as he witnessed the pouncing cat-stand, finding it hard to breathe among all the burning rubble, fading fast then.

Is… Is this how it ends..? Crushed and mangled as some lowlife’s burnt-up game piece..?

“I should have expected this much from you, honorable leader. You were always brave though, both you and your adoptive sister. Today we will see if your bravery is the sword that shatters the Union, or the other side of the coin of foolishness.” Shiranui closed her eyes, her ghostly body never tired nor hungry but ever worried and distant, and flipped the switch to the base’s alarm system. Their radar stations were picking up a formation of enemy aircraft at the very edge of detection range, headed towards a target due north of the facility. She was certain that sirens would soon be blaring at Midway, if they weren’t already. With nothing more to do than convey Thorson’s final orders, Shiranui picked up the radio receiver that would transmit her voice across the base via the air raid alarm system. “By order of idiot Shikikan Thorson, all ships and crew report to the docks. All ships prepare for immediate sortie. Those remaining behind should assemble at the labs and await direct orders.” When Shiranui finished and finally deactivated the alarm system, she could already hear the calls and shouting of her fellow Sakura, as well as many girls from the Union rushing from their beds and dormitories to the docks. Several ships out to sea sounded their horns, their operators having spent the night aboard in preparation for the battle to come. The ghost rabbit drifted through the desk and out into the pre-dawn light. A red sun was rising in the east. Her spirit fires burning brightly she headed for the docks, one final conversation weighing heavily on her mind.

It was easy enough for Shiranui to find her, her mannerisms, volume, and verbal tics easy to pick out among the crowd as she bid Arizona farewell. “I will be right with you, Arizona-san! Victory is at hand, nanoda!”

“Sister,” Shiranui hailed her calmly. The small neko

It had been three months since Karen Beecher was formally inducted in the Justice Legion, the nations-spanning union of trusted, accountable superheroes coming together to protect the world. Where the Justice League was once a team - a unit - the Justice Legion were a community. But as the previously retired Bumblebee arched her back forward, twisting uncomfortably in her chair, Karen wasn’t exactly feeling like part of a community right this moment.

Monitor duty. Every Legionnaire had a shift, no exceptions. Though, as one of the many heroes without her own sworn city to protect, Karen felt like she had been summoned more than some others. She understood; it wasn’t like she was awfully busy, and it wasn’t like she hadn’t seen plenty of action since donning the size-morphing, insectoid-winged exosuit once again. In fact, it was just like her days with the old Teen Titans, although now instead of watching over New York from the top storey of Titans Tower, she surveyed crime across the globe from the Watchtower, suspended in Earth’s orbit.

Karen reached across the control board and grabbed her water bottle, taking a swig, careful not to knock her precariously balanced cell phone onto the floor. For a kajillion-dollar space station, there was an awful draft. She looked around behind her. Why whoever built the station decided that surveillance would be done from the large, empty bridge and not a cozy little office was beyond the inventor-turned-hero. Just a few more hours, and she could clock out. She could beat the chill for that long.

Karen refocused on the many holographic displays ahead

I’m A Monster On The Run From My Past, It’s Catching Up.

Along with an as

Chapter 1: Let’s get high

It’s not easy to admit that you have a problem, for a lot of years I drifted through life looking for my next high, in most cases that would be your typical junkies background story leading up to his or her recovery. Only I never recovered, instead I just replaced all my addictions with one really fucked up past time, if you can call it that. I suppose you noticed I said all my addictions, I am what I like to call a well -rounded dope fiend, coke, heroine, meth and a list of pills that would make a pharmacist shit himself, you name it I’m on it, if you got it I want it, and that’s exactly what led me here.

My name isn’t all that important, and given what I do for a living these days it’s probably best that you don’t know. So for now you can call me Joe, this is an insane situation so I won’t blame you if you don’t believe me, but nonetheless for better or worse this is some real shit. I was living in Oregon when I learned the truth, I’m not talking today’s Oregon with super clean product and organized distributers, I’m talking the mom and pop days, when any tweeker with a chemistry set was cooking up crank in the bath tub. I had a pal named Willy that I used to get high with, we used to play this game, we would bet on which blast would be the last because back then the wrong shit could kill you, anyway uh, we had got our hands on some unbelievable smoke from a RV park in Dayville and we were driving back to my place when my car broke down. I know, I know there’s load of stories that start exactly like that, but I can’t make this up, that’s exactly what happened. To tell the truth I knew the car was trash and making that drive was a bad idea but when getting sick isn’t an option you’ll go a long way to get what you need.

The car rolled to a stop half way through “Fossil Beds” on the 19, Willy looked over at me and laughed, “I told you, I knew we should have bet on it, what are we gonna do now Joe? I’m not in the mood for your bullshit, we both know you can’t fix this car, we might as well start walking now and save ourselves the trouble.” I had to laugh, he was right, we both lit up and took a few hits before we got out and started the long walk home. I don’t know if any of you have ever been through the Fossil Beds, it’s a gorgeous place in the day time but when the sun goes down, I swear it’s the deepest darkest place on earth.

After about an hour of walking I glanced over at Willy who was smoking a cigarette and franticly s

Brave Pills

This is a warning. You see, something happened with my friend a few days ago. I don’t want to get into too much personal shit of his. To make a long story short, he and his wife are divorced. He’s been depressed because he’s supposed to see his kids on the weekend but with quarantine, he hasn’t been able to other than over the phone or through Skype.

Anyway, we happen to live close by. He asked me if I wanted to come over. I could tell he was feeling down, namely due to the slurred way he was talking. Both of us have been pretty good about washing our hands and stuff so I figured it would be okay to pay him a visit. Now, I don’t want to give the false impression, Carl is an alcoholic.

However, when he gets in a down mood, he can hit the bottle pretty damn hard. I rang his doorbell. The smell of whiskey hit me when he opened the door. Carl was standing in gym shorts and a plain white shirt with stains I did not desire to know the origins of. He gave me a drunken smile.

“Devon,” he laughed. “Come on in. Sorry about the smell.”

“It’s alright,” I said, trying to keep my nose from wrinkling at the smell but not being too successful.

Carl’s tone suddenly became less cheery.

“No, it’s my fault. I wasn’t able to see them again.”

“Didn’t you call them?”

“Yeah, I did. It’s not the same, though.”

I’m going, to be honest. I’m not what you would call the counseling type. At most, if somebody airs their grievances to me, I’ll listen. I’ll offer to the best of my ability something that may cheer them up and will give some words of advice. However, if they’re looking for some profound words of wisdom, I’m just not the person they’ll get it from. Still, I did my best to lift Carl’s spirits.

“I know. It sucks that they can’t come over with everything going on. Why don’t we do some things to get your mind off this for a little while?”

“That sounds good right about now. I actually made some brownies I want you to try.”

He said brownies in a way that let me know he meant they had weed in them. Carl has dealt with anxiety issues throughout his life and it helps him with that. He’s become a bit of a stoner as a result. A couple brownies later and we were sitting together on his couch, playing some games and laughing at something that probably wasn’t that funny. Hours went by and we fell asleep.

I woke up on the floor the next morning. Carl was still asleep. Not wanting to be a dick, I tried being silent while getting

Alison was removing her report from the scanner when the intern looked up from reading a new message on his screen. “Oh, there is some news you need to hear. The linguists and interrogators have arrived and are being processed at the front desk at the moment, they should be meeting with you shortly. They are also insisting on some security changes.” He paused to type on his keyboard for a second and the scanner began printing a checklist, Alison glanced at it worriedly while the intern returned to skimming the document on his screen. “Ok, some extra guards will be arriving soon and the NSA is insisting the lab with the aliens will need to follow biosafety level 3 protocols. Some guys from the biohazard wing are coming by to give you guys a proper hermetically sealed tank with a filtered air supply to keep the wasps in. They are also going to move that food sample you took to one of their labs.” He said, glancing back up at Alison.

Oh great. That won’t be a test of trust at all Alison thought as she imagined trying to wrangle the wasps into a new cage. Security was probably going to insist on clamping their wings again for that.

She sighed and picked up the fresh printout. “What’s the eta on the new tank?”

Some scrolling and clicking later “Hmm, 10 to 15 minutes. They say they had a wheeled one in storage that they are about to send over.”

“That’s quick at least, I’ll go tell the others to get ready for them. Bye.” She said briskly as she rushed back to the lab and brought the others up to speed. Carl was a bit annoyed about having his sample taken away.
