LPT: Get pet insurance. I had a $3k bill for my cat's overnight vet stay a few years ago. Now, I just pay $25 a month and they cover $5k in injury/illness expenses a month

There are plenty of providers out there, and they can also offer preventative care insurance. I personally go through ASPCA, but shop around. It could save you a lot of grief in the long term, and can save your animal too.

I especially recommend this for people who couldn't handle an overnight $3k vet bill. Budget out the $25 a month instead because, at some point, you'll need it, and you never want to be in the position of picking between your wallet and your pet.

Edit: $5k in illness/injury a year. Sorry for any confusion on that front.

Edit 2: To address all the naysayers who say "just save up instead". I think it's better to say that if/when you have the savings to handle $5-15k in pet expenses, you can go without insurance or cancel. Until then, it's better to carry it, at least to me. There are plenty of examples in the comments of pets getting hurt in the first year and insurance coming in for the save.

Everyone should obviously analyze their own situation. The "just save up instead" attitude falls on its face if your pet gets hurt or sick in the first 5 years of the "save up" approach and those savings aren't enough to cover it.

Edit 3: Lots of love to Healthy Paws insurance from people in the comments. I'll probably switch to them in the new year based on people's experiences here.

6 Months of Cat Expenses

Hi r/personalfinance! I've seen posts on here that breaks down the costs of adopting a puppy, but I never saw anything regarding cat expenses. I adopted a rescue cat (age 2-3 years) at the end of June and decided to keep track of the expenses associated with that. I thought I'd share.

These expenses are not normal, as my cat had some chin acne and overgrooming issues (he groomed the fur on his belly pretty much all off!) so our vet bills and medication costs for a cat are likely higher than most.

  • Adoption Fee - $105
  • Food/Treats - $586.82
  • Litter - $221.50
  • Toys - $58.93
  • Supplies - $355.03
    • this includes carrier, litter box, litter bags, food dishes, etc
    • most of this was before we brought him home since we had no cat supplies already.
  • Vet - $678.90
    • this is from 4 vet visits and includes exams, a blood test, fungal test, etc
  • Meds - $428.43
    • includes 1 vaccine, two doses of flea/tick treatment, 1 round of steroids and a couple rounds of antibiotics

TOTAL SPENT = $2,434.61

I'm hoping his vet bills level out for these next 6 months since we seem to have his over grooming under control. I'm also questioning whether I should have been proactive and gotten pet insurance. Anyone have any insight on this?

Cat Tax

EDIT: WOW! I was not expecting this to blow up like it did. I'm try to respond to all of the comments. I also feel like I'm being slightly judged for spending so much on my cat. To put some of the common expenses in context: My cat weighs close to 15 pounds, so he eats more than the average cat. He gets two small cans of food a day and about a quarter cup of dry food every day. I also opted to feed him higher quality food which costs more.

Another point worth making: I have a tendency to stock up, especially when I have a coupon or when there's a sale, which I have done with his litter and food. Out of what I spent on litter, I still have a few boxes leftover which will likely last several months. I also try and empty his box completely and refill it with fresh, which I did twice in these six months. As for his food, What I spent accounts for 7 months of wet food (will finish that stash this month) and a lot longer for dry food.

Slade’s son, Grayson is still struggling in and out of hospitals. Sadly, Grayson’s mother has a current gofundme page to help fund some of the medical expenses. This blows my mind.

I have just started binging OC and just finished season 6 so I was digging around, reading old threads, etc. For some reason I got the impression that both Slade’s sons are grown and that Gray, the son with cancer, was doing relatively better. It all felt like old news to me as I’m reading articles and threads from years ago when Slade was on the show.

Imagine my surprise when I made my way to Michelle Arroyo’s (Slade’s ex and Gray’s mom) insta and see Gray does not look well at all and Michelle posts daily about him and can’t even afford all the healthcare that he needs.

She has a gofundme page for only $25K and it’s only at $7K. I thought I was going to throw up. Couldn’t Slade and Gretchen link to that page and get help for Gray? Couldn’t they use their platform even if they don’t have cash? How can this mother be left having to beg for $25K when we have these semi celebs that could probably get that funded in less than a few hours???

Anyway, I’m sharing the gofundme link here. I assume it is legit as you can go to Michelle Arroyo’s insta and follow the link from there. And her insta has tons of videos of Gray on it.

https://gofund.me/c813b599

ETA1: Adding a link to Michelle’s latest insta post which is a video of Gray from yesterday.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJlp-Xtga6n/?igshid=berpwr60ewy1

ETA2: Michelle has read read the post and is grateful

I sent Michelle a DM on insta this morning just warning her that I posted this and that we wanted to help but if it was causing drama, we would take it down. I sent her the link to the post. She wrote back and was grateful. She said she was wondering where the sudden uptick in donations were coming from! She shared a little about why it is so helpful in terms of all the medical help Gray needs. He’s on a ventilator to help him breathe and she said it’s a long road ahead and insurance barely covers the minimum.

I wrote back expressing my sadness about Gray. I also asked if there was anything she wanted to or could share with us about Slade’s place in all of this but understood if she didn’t want to start drama by saying anything. And I told her how some of the Redditors have moved to insta and are commenting on Gretchen’s page sharing the link but she keeps deleting any comment about Grayson. I suggested if we could use their platform, why not!

We’ll see if she writes back. I would totally understand if she didn’t! But I can’t help but hope she secretly reads

Income is finally greater than expenses!

I hope this is an OK place for this, but I wanted someplace to share with people who could possibly understand. I'm grateful to still have a job during this time and still actually got a cola.

I am finally earning more than what my monthly bills are. I work full time and receive child support but I have been working really hard at trying to keeping my monthly bills low so I can survive without the child support. I hated depending on it because there was always a possibility it wouldnt come, either at all or on time.

About a year ago I started reworking my budget to where I did not depend on that deposit to pay a bill. When I got it I would transfer it to savings so it would be there when I needed it, usually to make up a deficit near the end of the month. I was reviewing my budget and noticed that I am now earning more than my bills. I don't need the child support anymore and it feels really good!

Beyond expense ratios and CAGR; why the intangibles of FIRE may matter more than the quantitative factors. My perspective based on ~8 years of early retirement.

I am submitting this post to promote discussion about what I believe to be potential dangers associated with the pursuit of FIRE and to highlight the importance of, throughout your life, attending to the qualitative factors that I believe are essential to a successful retirement. My goal is to encourage those of you on the road to FIRE to take whatever steps you deem necessary to avoid these potential pitfalls.

I believe that, for some, FIRE becomes some sort of amorphous goal that provides both a degree of hope, as well as an excuse to avoid working on the aspects of life that really matter: social connections, meaningful goals, physical and mental health. This is especially true for people who, while highly intelligent and well educated, are relatively less adept at enhancing and developing the qualitative aspects of life.

Some of you may remember me from my previous posts. Recently I have started to think more about what accounts for post FIRE happiness, meaning, fulfillment and health. I believe that, just as it is important to devote X percent of your salary to an IRA throughout your life, it is equally important to devote X percent of your time to physical and mental health, maintaining or rekindling old friendships and cultivating new ones. Failure to do so puts one at risk for an unfulfilling and unhealthy retirement.

It's as if some FIRE aspirants are saying to themselves: β€œYeah, I’m in poor physical health, depressed and socially isolated and I hate my job. But that’s ok, because, one day……”. But then that day comes; you are FI, but with nothing with which to fill the void. I have seen this before. Retirement is often accompanied by a huge let down. Some become depressed and drink. Some stay at home all day, every day leading to friction with their SO. Some blow vast amounts of money on baubles in a vain attempt to find some sort of justification for the decades they had sacrificed to get to this point.

I am eternally thankful to my parents who were wise enough to facilitate and support my nascent hobbies and passions. Because of them I had endless things to motivate me when I stopped working. I am equally aware that my natural tendency to reach out to old friends, work colleagues etc. meant that I had a deep and wide pool of social support when I need it. Nevertheless, I have struggled with periods of loneliness since I stopped working ~8 years ago, long before I had ever heard of FIRE. My new girlfriend has both

[Serious] Me and my boyfriend are about to move in together. He is buying a house and his name is on everything. Should mine be too? I will be paying half the mortgage plus half of all other living expenses. I've never lived with a boyfriend before and want to know if I'm being financially screwed.

I have known him for over a year and we've been officially dating since May. He told me that if we got married, my name would be on it but being he doesn't know what the future holds, and neither do I, he doesn't want to put it on there now. He has had me involved throughout the entire process like asking me things I'm concerned about with the house as well as being there as he was signing the papers which I liked so I do feel included in the process in some way.

I have only rented apartments. I've never bought a home so the entire process of buying one I have no clue about. Add to that, I've never officially lived with a significant other as well so being he is being cautions, I am being as well.

I did mention to him that I felt weird that I wouldn't be earning equity and I felt like I should be being I'm paying for half the mortgage a month plus other expenses. He said that he didn't want to put a date saying something like "by _____ date you'll get equity" because he felt like it was putting an expiration date on us. He told me he's not out to financially screw me but being this is all new to me, I'm not sure. I trust him but a girl has to protect herself to you know?

**At the request of many who have commented, adding the following: I have not contributed to the down payment and in his words, he said he cannot afford the mortgage payments on his own even though he was approved through his lender. Because of that, he needs half from me to afford the house. We have talked about financial set up and I’ve agreed to pay half of utilities and groceries as well as half the mortgage.

On one hand I get what he's saying but on the other, I'm not sure. Any advice/input is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance :)

WIBTA if I ask my mentally ill wife to get a job -- even though my earnings alone cover our expenses just fine?

I completely acknowledge that this sounds really bad, but hear me out.

My wife (23F) and I (26M) come from slightly different backgrounds -- my family was definitely more financially comfortable (parents left some hefty inheritance from their property business before they passed and I have a cushy analyst job at a rapidly growing startup) while my wife dropped out of high school and never worked more than six months at a time due to her depression (which was enabled by her horrible, abusive household mind you)

We started dating around 3 years ago when I just graduated university and got my first job, and I've been wiring her a monthly "allowance" (a small portion of my salary) since she's unemployed with no income whatsoever. One day it got REALLY out of hand with her mom so we decided to get married and move in together, and we've been living happily together for more than 2 years now.

Thing is, I thought with her terrible mother out of the way, consistent therapy, and a loving home & husband, she would get better enough to turn her life around. I mean, I understand how debilitating your mental illness can be (I got diagnosed with GAD some time back and had to do a lot of work to be somewhat functional), but it doesn't feel right to see her not doing anything but go on the computer and play games for years?

She doesn't really clean or cook or any of those housewife-ly stuff (which is perfectly fine to me! I want a lifelong partner, not a maid). She doesn't quite have any hobby either -- I asked if she enjoyed the games she always plays and she says it's just "to pass the time". She doesn't go outside even before COVID, doesn't work out or shop, and all her friends are online.

One time I suggested she takes up a dog-sitting job so she has the chance to go out doing something she enjoys (she LOVES animals), but she said, almost verbatim, "I don't want to work ever, honestly. We have enough to cover everything, so it's okay like this, right?"

That's when I kinda see figurative red flags? NGL, I felt a little bit resentful in the moment because it makes me feel like I'm just her sugar daddy, but upon reflecting I shouldn't be feeling that way since I do love her and seeing her content should be enough.

But I do worry that she's wasting her life away? She has all the freedom in the world; is it irresponsible for me to just let her sorta rot in our apartment not doing anything and possibly making her depression worse? or WIBTA since I'd be forcing he

Liberals Announce $400 Home Office Expense Income Tax Deduction

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/home-office-expense-deduction-income-tax_ca_5fc55f04c5b63d1b770eb4c2

>Recognizing that the pandemic has forced millions of people to work from home, the Liberal government announced a new personal income tax deduction for Canadians who have found themselves in that very situation.
>
>Canadians will be able to deduct $400 under a simplified β€œHome Office Expense Deduction” on their 2020 income tax return, according to the federal government’s new fall economic statement released Monday.
>
>β€œ[Canada Revenue Agency] will allow employees working from home in 2020 due to COVID-19 with modest expenses to claim up to $400, based on the amount of time working from home, without the need to track detailed expenses, and will generally not request that people provide a signed form from their employers,” the statement said.
>
>The new deduction expands the current limited β€œwork-space-in-the-home expenses” rules that allow workers to deduct only part of their telework-related expenses, including electricity, heating, and maintenance costs.
>
>Additional details about how Canadians will be able to claim the new COVID-19-related deduction are expected to be announced in β€œcoming weeks” by the Canada Revenue Agency.

Servers get way too much credit at the expense of cooks

Don't get me wrong, they are an integral part of the food-service industry and should be treated with respect and fairness just as much as any of the other staff in a restaurant, but at the end of the day you are being paid to make communication between the customer and the kitchen easier. Cooks are notoriously underpaid, understaffed, given the worst hours, have to function in high pressure environment that is significantly more physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing, all while keeping up with cleaning, preparation, and communication. The duties of a cook/chef are significantly more complex and difficult to manage. However, most restaurants would rather have on twice as many FOH staff than BOH, and sometimes this makes sense (too many cooks in the kitchen logic), however most of the time this is to put a disparaging focus on the FOH (quick service, touching tables, always having someone that's not too busy to stretch a bit, taking a table's order ASAP, etc), but at the end of the day you do not go to a restaurant for just a good server and good atmosphere and good drinks. You are their for the food, and if the people that make food can't function properly because they get paid an awful wage, work too many or too few hours, or are stretched preforming the job of five people, the food will be late, the food will be lower quality. Stop treating cooks like utter garbage and servers like angels.

Just found out that my firm will pay up to $1,000 in β€œfitness” expenses. Golf falls into that category. What should i get myself?

I just got golf shoes and I have a working set of clubs (callaways, probably a beginner set). I’m fairly new, but am leaning into this activity pretty heavily. What could I spend this money on?

EDIT: I have been taking lessons for the last few months, so at this point Im leaning towards getting new clubs. I don’t need anything top tier, but I would like to upgrade from my starter set. Any recommendations on where I can start my search? Our family friend works at Taylormade (so we can get discounts), so I’d like to start my search there

EDIT 2: Checked the fine print. Equipment IS included in this policy.

Six years of personal expenses

I've kept track of my families expenses for the past 6 years in order to have a better understanding of where our largest expenses are. I originally used Mint but went to Quicken as the reports were more robust even though it costs $$$.

We don't formally set any budgets as a family, so I use our year to year expenditures as a form of budgeting. We are a single income, family of 4 in a VHCOL area and I think we do a decent job of keeping expenses low (single people or people from LCOL areas may be rolling their eyes, lol). We are pretty thrifty and spend money when we need to, we also don't eat out as much as most folks (usually when we are already out and it is too late to make dinner for the kids, our high restaurant costs are usually from taking out the grandparents and other family). For luxuries, we usually plan a head/shop around for the best deal and rarely impulse purchase anything expensive unless it is a great deal.

When I was starting out, I was fascinated with other peoples budgets since I had no idea where my money was going. Also, when we initially started on the whole PF journey, I was pretty debt adverse and paid back any of my outstanding debt quickly (ie: student loans, mortgage) in retrospect, certain things like mortgage probably made financial sense to keep.

Hope this helps anyone looking to set a budget or compare your expenses!

Slade’s son, Grayson is still struggling in and out of hospitals. Sadly, Grayson’s mother has a current gofundme page to help fund some of the medical expenses. This blows my mind.

I posted this on the other RH sub late last night and it got a bit of traction and $2K+ in donations so far! Grayson’s mom is grateful so I figured I’d post here too.

ETA1: Adding a link to Michelle’s latest insta post which is a video of Gray from yesterday.

I suggested if we could use thei
