Viability of (and advice about) European Beech for carving ?

Looking for some advice about the viability of carving European beech, because I have an old piece of timber from my Deceased grandfather's Atelier (he was a carpenter). Idea would be to carve his face and name into its side. Unfortunately I do not know if European beech is suitable for this, so advice would be very welcome.

European Tri-Color Beech?

Has anyone planted or otherwise had experience with growing a European Tri-Color Beech in central KY? I have one planted in my back yard, under substantial shade and slightly acidified soil as recommended by the resources i've consulted. Yet the pink portion of most leaves appear to burn as if it is receiving too much direct sun.

European Beech nursery stock plans

I got this European Beech at a nursery last fall during a sale and haven't touched it yet. I'm trying to decide what to do with this tree over the next few years and figured I have 2 options.

  • Option 1: Wait for buds to begin extending and give it a hard prune and do some root work to remove a crossing root. Place it back in the same large pot with some extra soil to let it recover for a year or two before I begin styling and shaping the tree.

  • Option 2: Do nothing right now and wait for the first flush of spring growth to harden before beginning an air layer at the green line. This fall, when removing the air layer, chop at the red points to give me 2 trees. I will then wait until the spring of 2019 to repot the base and do root work. This would take longer and I'm not sure if the air layered portion is really interesting enough to make it worth waiting until 2019 to do the root work...

Any other ideas would be most welcome!
