This announcement comes directly after Sen Coons was sent to Ethiopia with the aim of accomplishing this. He was sent as a stand in for Biden as Blinken has been criss crossing the globe- this is a massive deal and a major diplomatic success, Ethiopia is still in the American sphere!
After years of waiting, the Official List of Based Countries has just dropped
Discussion: It is my opinion that presidente iseyas has destroyed Ertra, he failed implementation of constitution as per G15. He failed to hold elections in decades. He failed to economically build up the country. He failed to give eritreans a better life than they had in the early 90's.
Worst of all: he failed to make way for Eritreans that can.
I wanted to bring up this discussion because I've long wondered what the end game for Isaias is in Tigray and I suspect that he might have been promised parts of Tigray for his military support of ENDF.
There are also other events that made me suspect this. First is that parts of Tigray have been given to the Amhara region. Given that this has happened, it might be likely that other parts might be given to Eritrea.
Second, there have been reports of Eritrea issuing Eritrean identification cards in some of the towns it controls. Additionally, residents of those towns have been reported using Eritrean area codes for their phone service. Given Eritrea effectively administers many parts of Tigray, I see this as an indication that the occupation is intended to be long term.
Third, the ENDF does not seem to have the strength to control the region on its own. Even with Eritrean troops assisting it, the war does not seem to be close to over. Would the ENDF even be able to police the region after the war given this state of affairs? If not, Eritrea might be in de facto control of parts of Tigray for a long time.
Finally, I found this tweet of an unconfirmed report that such a deal has already taken place: https://mobile.twitter.com/BeniamTewolde/status/1371851758465585155
Anyway, I wanted to hear your thoughts on this. With Abiy keeping mum on Eritrean troops, we have no official confirmation of anything but we can speculate.
I wanted to start a little discussion on the play in the Horn of Africa involving Israel and other middle eastern players. News broke over the weekend that Iran had intelligence operatives in Ethiopia looking to perform terrorist strikes against American, Israeli and Gulf states. Ethiopia a few weeks ago had arrested 15 people with ties to Iran targeting the UAE's embassy there. Ethiopia is a UAE ally.
In Somalia the USA has reported that it has intercepted ships from Iran and North Korea intended for arming al-Shabab. Some of these were diverted from other similar shipments going to the Houthi in Yemen. 2014-8 Somalia was a UAE ally. The relationship soured when the UAE worked with Somaliland (province of Somalia trying for independence) and Somalia refused to cut ties with Qatar.
There is concern that Iran is attempting to establish a relationship with the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front which is the main guerilla / terrorist organization in Eritrea. Eritrea and Ethiopia are allies in this fight. Both the Israelis and the UAE are assisting Eritrea. The Israelis are providing intelligence support while the UAE is directly arming Eritrea ignoring the UN's position of a weapons ban.
AFAIK we haven't discussed Eritrea before on the sub. Also we rarely discuss the Horn of Africa plays and definitely not since the Abraham Accords. I don't have any particular insightful opinion but wanted to open the discussion up to see if anybody wanted to throw something in about the recent events or the longer term strategy.
Does anyone remember being told to "pray for" them and write them letters?
They've supposedly been imprisoned in a shipping container for several decades, for "their faith."
It just also makes me wonder if any other currently imprisoned JWs will ever hear THE truth and get out??
My mother had this doll that she believes my grandmother purchased at an open air market in Eritrea during world war 2, probably between 1941-45. My grandfather was stationed there in Africa as a radio engineer for the army. We don’t know much else about it. Any help would be great!
