I just learned that Youjo Senki's English title is "Saga of Tanya the Evil" not "Sage of Tanya the Evil." Have you ever had a similar experience with anime where you learn the real name after far too long?

I know you're gonna tell me that "Sage of Tanya the Evil" doesn't make any sense, but that's exactly what I'd always thought. But because things like Attack on Titan and Knight's & Magic exist, I always just shrugged it off as being another Japanese to English title that doesn't make sense.

Why do I keep seeing this trend in Japanse-English title translations?

It's not something that happens frequently, but it happens often enough that I notice the pattern. When there is a Japanese title that gets translated to English or vice versa, the English title tends to be something abstract that subtly hints at the theme of the story, whereas the Japanese title tends to be a phrase that contains the protagonist's name along with some qualifying nouns and adjectives about the protagonist with a lot of conjunctions (of, and, et cetera). Examples:

English: Frozen

Japanese: Anna and the Queen of Snow (ใ‚ขใƒŠใจ้›ชใฎๅฅณ็Ž‹)

English: Origin: Spirits of the Past

Japanese: Agito of Silver Hair (้Š€่‰ฒใฎ้ซชใฎใ‚ขใ‚ฎใƒˆ)

English: I am Setsuna

Japanese: Setsuna of Sacrifice and Snow (ใ„ใ‘ใซใˆใจ้›ชใฎใ‚ปใƒ„ใƒŠ)

I'm sure there are more that I just can't recall or haven't encountered, but what is this pattern that I'm seeing? Is the idea of subtle and abstract titles a really Western thing, with Eastern titles tending towards a "here's the main character's name and some motifs about

Which anime could have used a better English language title?

With Attach on Titan back, I remembered how a lot of people complained that "Attack on Titan" isn't a good translation, and that "Shingeki no Kyojin" would more accurately translate to "advancing titan," which implies that the titans are the ones doing the attacking, and gives a good allusion to humanity's being under siege in the story. Are there any other examples where a manga or anime's English title does not capture some essential element from the original Japanese?

How come we refer to certain shows by their English title and others by their Japanese ones?

I've wondered about this before, but this question was inspired partly by this post. It's a trend I've noticed for a while.

What determines whether we refer to a show by its original title or its Japanese one?

I understand some shows' titles are only ever in English, and so that's why we refer to it that way (e.g. Devilman), but what about something like Revolutionary Girl Utena (which in the linked post is Shลjo Kakumei Utena)?

A lot of names here are in romanized Japanese, but how come I only ever see Ghibli titles in English? I was actually surprised to see "Your Name." instead of "Kimi no na wa" on this list, which I'm more used to seeing in various forums, the Reddit community, etc. Anyone have an idea about this?

When I got really into anime about a decade ago I don't remember people referring to shows or movies by their Japanese title too often, but I also had never visited

Feedback on English writing

For a project I am writing an English text about the dancing plague of 1518, but I'm not a native English speaker.
If anybody has the time and wants to read it through, feedback on my English would be greatly appreciated!

If anyone has feedback on the story in general I'd also love to hear that!

The text:

In July 1518 a woman called Frau Troffea could be seen dancing through the streets of Strasbourg.

She kept on dancing and dancing until she fell down, exhausted.

She wasnโ€™t the only one.

In less than a week, dozens of people followed suit.

What happened next was what we now call the dancing plague of 1518.

Within a month, hundreds of people were dancing through Strasbourg,

some even kept dancing until they dropped dead.

The cityโ€™s authorities initially thought the plague was caused by a disease they called โ€œhot bloodโ€. This disease would be cured by encouraging the dancers to keep moving.

The authorities set up a stage and hired pipers and drummers.

Those afflicted wit

To the English teacher of my junior year

Dear Mr . P,

I was very uncertain coming into English Literature. In my mind I assumed I'd be terrible and behind everyone. I wasnโ€™t self-conscious or insecure per se, I was just nervous and prepared for the worst. But then you showed me (all of us) the wonders of literature and the beauty it elevates into our world. Youโ€™ve taught us literature so well that I went from being so unsure, confused and clueless to becoming a Jane Austen and Shakespeare addict.

Maybe it's kind of cheesy to say this, but youโ€™ve been the grandparent figure that Iโ€™ve lost since I was young. From your supportive, encouraging words to your laughable Romeo and Juliet teaching ways, and from your relaxed, cordial nature to your high expectations in us - in me - I've grown to find you an indispensable role model in my life, and probably the best English teacher to date. Youโ€™re a different kind of English teacher, you offered us gum yourself when you knew our school was draconian and strict. You let us use our p

Foreigners who speak "broken English" are smarter than you are

It always pisses me off when I see someone mocking a foreigner speaking broken English or with a heavy accent. I always wanna say: motherfucker, the mere fact that they can put together enough words from one of the most difficult languages on earth to learn and be understood is borderline genius.

So their grammar is a little off. So they're stressing weird parts of the word. Who cares? How much Mandarin do you speak, Billy? How's your Farsi sound, John? Do you even know a single fucking word in German, Jenny?

Immigrants who speak even a little bit of broken English have already put forth more effort than your monolingual ass ever will and I respect the hell out of them.

The letter Q is unneeded and has no reason to be in the English alphabet

Okay, let me try this again. The last time I tried posting this, it posted 14 times.

The letter "q" could be replaced by the letter "k" and it would have no effect. "Q" is always followed by the letter "u" to make the "kw" sound. So why include it at all?

Queen becomes Kween

Question becomes Kwestion

Equation becomes Ekwation

..And so on. If the letter "Q" didn't exist, there would be 25 letters in the alphabet, which is a much more standard number (multiple of 5, easier to remember, etc).

Do you agree with this rekwest?

Why to use "C" in english alphabet

You may say I'm silly but I like to check ethymology and wonder what is for letter C still used in english alphabet and if is it required anymore?

Whenever I met that letter it's killed by grammar rules. I'm forced to replace it.

Except creation of slavic eg. czech phonem "ฤ" with form of "ch" it's not used in grammar. Any word can be now writen as same meanning by replacing "c" with "k" or "s" or even "tshi" for "ch":

*cage - kage

*Cadillac - Kadillak

*can - kan

*campus - kampus

*cancer - kantser

*havoc - havok

*tunic - tunik

*acute - akute

*accurate - akurate

*accent - aksent

*center - senter

*city - sity

*cymbal - symbal

*fancy - fansy

*chair - tshair

*chip - tship

Does english still need letter C in aplhabet if it's not used in pronounTSe?

YSK: Why people who say "Sorry for the bad English" actually use big words and good English.

When anyone says "Sorry for the bad english," they often mean that they are not experienced with the way people casually speak. When you learn a language, they teach it to you from the basics to the most complex words. If I learned advanced English, and tried to jump right into an area, I would know all of the big words and phrases, but not the local nuances and/or the general flow of words.

There are very different ways to speak a language (IE: saying "y'all" or "what's up?") and schools of language often teach you the professional speak.

Should I take AP Literature or English 12 DE or Honors?

Iโ€™m currently enrolled in AP English Language & Comp. as a junior. Iโ€™m planning out what classes to take next year as a senior and so I was wondering if I should take another AP English course, in this case AP Lit (Keep in mind that I donโ€™t really like reading THAT much) or just go with a honors or DE class. I want to have some workload in senior year, to keep me occupied, but obviously i do not want drown myself in course work. If this helps, I do not plan to apply to a prestigious/top tier university.

If AP Lit is recommended, is the course generally easier or harder than AP Lang? I keep hearing both, but mainly that AP Lit is more difficult. Let me know!

AITA for "taking advantage" out of a woman who couldn't speak english into selling her husbands car for ยฃ1500 instead of ยฃ3000?

I know it makes me sound like an asshole but hear me out.

I used to drive my dad's Ford Mondeo but something happened to the engine. The insurance company thought it would cost more to fix it than to buy a new one. My dad got the money and bought a better car however, the insurance on it for me would have been extremely expensive.

Due to that, I wanted to buy my own car so I looked around for a hatchback to last me until I finished uni in about 2 years. I went online and found a 2009 VW Polo for ยฃ3k. It was right in my budget so I called up the man and spoke to him about it. He said I could come over and view it so I went there. I bought my friend's brother who is a mechanic and he told me that the car was a steal and was in perfect condition for its age and its mileage was low (30,000). I spoke to the man and he said that I could come over the next day and give him the money.

He called me the next day and told me about how he had to travel for a work event but I could give the mon

Unpopular opinion I guess: I'm glad I was assigned books in english class.

I see a lot of posts on here about how people's English teachers ruined their love of reading by assigning them a book and how they are just ruined now and cant fathom picking up another book.

I'm actually really glad my english teachers assigned me books to read. Without them I never would have tried branching out and stretching my reading interests. Books I love now such as The Once and Future King, The Book Thief, Flowers for Algernon, and Dracula all were assigned to me in high school.

To all you english teachers out there who care about literature and try to help kids broaden their reading horizons: thanks for encouraging me to try new things and not just read Harry Potter for the umpteenth time. You guys are awesome.

English for a Mexican out of USA

I learned a lot (reading) on those old Yahoo chats, then I moved to USA and found that I knew nothing hahaha, I went to English school (with a Mexican teacher and I learned nothing, with an American teacher and I learned something but not enough (he spoke Spanish too and was condecending) then o started working with Americans and they forced to speak English yes it yes, I learned a lot on couple months (which I didn't learn before ) but I stop at certain level of comfort like how I did know I could communicate I was like, well I am good.

Then I moved back to Mexico and didn't practice, when I went back and ended having to talk with more Americans (but more about business and not just casual conversations) I realized I didn't know at all (was disappointed) then I promised my self to learn more and be better (better pronunciation, better understanding and more words than just the necessary ones).

It took me like a year of pushing my self speaking more with Americans and putting attenti

AITA for refusing to speak to my (white) best friends cousin in Hindi and telling him he needs to stick to English?

Iโ€™m a girl of Indian heritage who was born in the states, and very unusually, my parents were born in the USA also. We are about as American as it gets, and my mom and dad have very very little cultural ties back home to India. They are openly atheist, have white collar jobs and so their mannerisms, lifestyles, values, are all more american than Indian.

Now they speak โ€˜conversationalโ€™ Hindi, just enough to get by, but me and my siblings basically only know how to count from 1-10 and maaaybe the names of a few animals. Weโ€™ve never learnt the language whether your opinion on that is good or bad, it just is what it is. We were only spoken to in English growing up.

My best friend of 12+ years has a cousin who I saw on and off growing up. Iโ€™m seeing a lot more of him now because my best friends mom is getting remarried and itโ€™s going to be a huge affair. So heโ€™s been coming over whenever Iโ€™m with my best friend to help with things like moving stuff, picking up items, etc.

Our families
