Pulled off my 5” tall baseboard in the bathroom and there’s a 3” gap between the drywall and the floor. How do I properly seal this up to prevent drafts? Cut strips of dry wall, tape to existing drywall and then caulk the seam between floor and new strip?

I’ve always wondered why it was so drafty in the bathroom. Now I know since this bathroom has two walls on the exterior of the house.

I’m picturing cutting 3” x wall length strips of drywall and screwing them to the studs. Taping the drywall to drywall seam and then caulking the seam between the flooring and the drywall strip before attaching new baseboard.

Does this sound right? Or do I need to mud the strip texture paint and all that as well?

Keep in mind this seam will all be behind the new baseboards.

EDIT: forgot to put the little drawing I made: https://ibb.co/nQn3Vgb

Installing 1/4 drywall on ceiling to cover up butter smear ceiling design.

Hello fellow r/HomeImprovement members!

Wife and I are buying a house during this whole pandemic. I noticed that in some rooms and hallways they have what looks like some sort of butter smear paint design on the ceiling, not popcorn though.

I've done countless of YouTubes to see what some people have done to replace that. Most were people saying that we should just use drywall paste to kind of just put a new layer across the whole ceiling...and then they mentioned multiple coats and after seeing the end results it didn't look right in the videos.

I saw a comment mentioning just getting 1/4 inch drywall and basically install it OVER the old ceiling. I liked this idea better, as it can give me a nice flat surface for a final paint.

If anyone has any comments/discussion about this, that'd be great, but im just looking for some input on it.

Thanks in advance!!

Do I need to replace my drywall if I can dry it out?

Texas redditor here. Had a pipe freeze burst and got water throughout about a third of my home. It's actually not too bad of a situation. There's some real awful ones out there right now.

The water wasn't more than an inch or inch and a half deep at any one place. It happened while I was sleeping, however it must have only been leaking for about 30 to 45 minutes. I got the water off and started sucking it up with my wet/dry dry vac. By about the fifth or sixth vac full, most of the floors (ceramic tile) were puddle free.

I happened to have access to some dehumidifiers and have been running them with some fans. I believe I can dry out most of the drywall.

I know I will need to replace the baseboards, but should I replace the drywall even if I can get it dried out?

Silly question: Do I have to buy an entire sheet of drywall for this? Patching a few holes.

I have some holes in drywall that are a little bigger than what I would use a mesh "patch" kit for. Think slightly larger than a single gang outlet box, and I have three holes this size.

I would do a [california patch] (https://drywall101.com/articles/taping/californiapatch.php) but I don't necessarily need / want / have the ability to transport an entire sheet of drywall. Does anyone sell like 2'x4' project panels like they do with MDF?

Failing that, will HD/Lowe's cut the drywall up for me?

I'm going to drywall my basement ceiling unless I shouldn't...

I've spent weeks agonizing over this. We want to finish the basement and we can't find a non-drywall option we like for the ceiling. No drop ceiling tiles look good, shiplap boards aren't for us, just painting the beams meh... just don't see an alternative we'd be happy with. But I'm scared of needing to run a wire someday or needing to get to the pipes for repairs or something.

I guess we'll move forward with drywall and have access panels below the kitchen and bathroom areas... unless you guys can tell me why I really should/shouldn't do this.

Would really appreciate any advice and wisdom. Thank you!

Thoughts on re-plastering vs modern drywall in pre 1900's historic homes?

Large 1873 home here. At some point, I'm going to need to open up some walls and redo a lot of electric, insulation, etc.

It's all lathe and plaster throughout. On one level, I like the idea of attempting to keep the materials closer to the original ones. But on the other hand, it's a lot of work for relatively little benefit.

What are your thoughts about DIY redoing all the lathe and plaster, vs using modern drywall?

There's something intangibly different character wise about old walls vs new ones, but I can't explain it.

Drywall over windows???

Hey all! My husband and I recently purchased a quirky house that was built in 2002 but has some weird remodeling things some previous owners did that we plan on fixing. We just today discovered some new weirdness: 2 windows that were drywalled over, 1 in the master bedroom and one in in living room (there may be more we need to do a full count inside and out). Our inspector did not notify us of this so I assume he did not catch it either. Is there any logical reason this would have been done? I am really really excited at the possibility of getting 2 more windows, even if we need to replace the window units or make other repairs, but I don't want to mess anything up if it could have been done for a specific important reason. Thanks!

Advice before I do my first drywall repair mudding

Photo of prepped patch

I replaced a couple of electric wall heaters in my condo. Had to cut away some drywall to remove the old ones. I've cut the replacement panels and screwed them to the studs. I'd like to check my work before I proceed with drywall mudding. I'm using mesh tape and so using hot mud with it -- but I got the 90-minute kind to give myself plenty of time to fix any screw-ups :)

My big questions are:

  1. have I done anything stupid or missed anything important with my tape prep? My friend suggested I need to chip off the existing paint/texture around the hole under the tape. Is that true? If so, what's the best way to do that?

  2. What's the best way to keep the heater wall can protected while I mud? (Do I have to remove it? Please say no, but also if I do, please let me down easy lol)

Drywall experts--what do I need to patch and repair this piece of ceiling?

Hi all,

A week and a half ago an ABS pipe broke in our attic, leaving a small bubble inside where our ceiling meets our wall:

https://imgur.com/a/zKv6omM

I've cut away the affected part of the ceiling so the area can dry and it's all dried out now. The ABS pipes in our attic have also been fixed.

Here are pictures of what it looks like now:

https://imgur.com/a/aiHo8jI

The part I cut is about 18" long and 6" wide at the base. I've peeled away the bubble down to the drywall on the inside of our home where the previous bubble was. My questions are below:

1- Prep; do I need to prep this area further? It's been peeled away and is dry.

2- After prep, what do I fill this area with? I assume mud (like this) but I don't know which kind. If anyone can provide links that would be super helpful.

3- After filling the area with mud, my assumption is that I let it dry, sand it down so it's even with the rest of the ceiling, then apply more mud if necessary so it's flush. Is this correct?

4- After it's flush, I assume I prime > add texture > prime again > paint. Is this correct?

Thanks for any help. I'm always so appreciative of this subreddit and as a first time home owner you all have been invaluable in helping us in our time(s) of need.

Thanks so much!

Drywall texture question

I’m working on a drywall repair. I’ve already applied and sanded two coats bringing the surface of the repaired area level with the surrounding area and mostly smooth. I’m ready to apply a final top coat.

My challenge is matching the texture of my existing β€œsmooth” painted surrounding drywall. Previously I’ve learned that after painting over a similar smooth drywall repair I completed even with a roller and multiple paint coats, the texture of the repair did not match the surrounding repairβ€”my repair was too smooth relative to existing texture. I can’t figure out how the original drywallers achieved the near-smooth texture I see on all the walls so I can match it. It is far more subtle than any β€œorange peel” photos I see. Photos below:
