AITA for not allowing my siblings to use my washer and dryer anymore?

So i (F19) got to move into my first apartment in September. I have 7 siblings but they all share the same dad and i have a different dad. My dad has a high paying job and he bought my apartment and said he was going to cover all the payments and in return i go to college and maintain good grades. Which seemed like a fair trade to me.

My siblings dislike my father as they blame him for their dad and our mom divorcing ( he and my mom divorced 8 years ago). They never wanted anything to do with him which is fair but i never liked how they bad mouthed him to me. So when they learned he bought me an apartment they were upset because i got β€œan easy way out”.

They started to come to my place because it has a washer and dryer and they save money by coming to me rather than paying $6 for one load of clothes. I live fairly close to my siblings so it was nothing but a 10-15 minute drive for them. It was fine the first few weeks but my boyfriend and i finally get to have our alone time and it isn’t exactly the best thing when we get comfortable and in comes my sister or my brother or one of my brother/sister in laws with a basket full of dirty laundry needing to be done. (only 3 of them have emergency keys as they’re the ones that live the closest)

I simply sent a message out to them asking that they give me a heads up before popping in. They don’t listen. I never got my own privacy growing up and didn’t like the idea that this would continue. So this past Monday, i got my locks changed and didn’t tell them.

Today, my sister in law apparently tried to get in while i was out and noticed it was changed. So i explained i did change the locks and didn’t plan to give them a key until they respected my privacy. They’re upset and thinks i’m being spoiled and selfish. They once again bring up how i don’t get how hard life is and they felt like i was being an AH. I kind of see why i’d be an AH but not a lot? Aita?

SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION the part where i said β€œhe and my mom divorced 8 years ago” i was referring to my dad. Not their dad. My mom did not cheat on their dad and she was separated from him for a while before she even met my dad!

AITA for not wanting a washer and dryer in my room?

I have a feeling I am NTA, but my parents have made me feel like a crazy person so I thought I'd consult reddit to see if I am in the wrong or not.

About two years ago, when I was a Junior in high school, my family and I (19f) moved to a new house. In the process of moving my parents made me believe I was getting a certain room, but the day before we moved they switched up on me and stuck me in another room. The main issue is that the room they stuck me in has a washer and dryer in it. I was pretty upset but I thought "I'm leaving for college soon, I can deal with this for a year," well miss rona happened so I had to stay home during my first year college.

Here's where the whole situation came to a head. A few weeks ago I was downstairs because the washer was loud and I didn't want to hear it, and my mom says "the washer is leaking," I respond "did any of my stuff get wet," she replied no so I didn't double check because I had no reason not to believe her. Several hours later I go up to my room and decided to make sure none of my stuff got wet, as I walked up I saw that many of my very valuable things were sopping wet, and so I begin to panic and tear up and yell over to my parents "oh my god my stuff was in the water and is sopping wet," they both come into my room and as they are inspecting everything I begin to cry because my favorite poster I made was completely ruined. As they are helping me get the stuff out of the water my dad sees me crying and says "really, with the tears," and I respond "well yeah this whole situation is just so frustrating," he then got very angry and yelled "well then just go, just go," to which I responded "don't you think I want to, it's not my fault I am stuck at home,"

I have gotten to the point where I feel uncomfortable and miserable in my own room. And the most frustrating part of this whole situation is that they make me feel like a total jerk and like I'm being unreasonable for wanting the washer and dryer out of my room. And there is a possible way to fix the whole situation. There is a possible washer and dryer hook up in the garage, the previous owners moved them from the garage to the room I currently live in. Anytime I aks my parents of they could have handyperson come check if it works, they immediately get mad at me and say no. There was even a perfect opportunity to see if this was an option when we had to get a new dryer a month ago. When the dryer broke I said that maybe they should have a person come se

"Let's get a new washer/dryer" turned into "Let's DIY to save money" and spent ~$9500...but it we love how it turned out!

I'll preface this to say my wife and I are pretty handy and aren't afraid to change things in our house (we had the controversial $85k kitchen post in 2019). Anyway, we knew we wanted to replace our 15 year old washer and gas dryer -- we just weren't sure of the room design, so we replaced some things piece-meal until we were ready to fully dive in after Thanksgiving -- and start ourselves! We've never tiled before, nor used a brad nailer after cutting correct trim miter angles.

Link to Imgur Gallery - first picture is finished: https://imgur.com/gallery/I4uSNf3

Breakdown of costs are below. Mostly everything was purchased from Lowes besides toilet (Kohler website) and the Washer/Dryer from a local appliance store. We hired out the plumbing labor from July to January, along with the Electrical contractor and W/D install. Two different tile companies quoted us $1500-1800 to install our tile WITHOUT Schluter Ditra -- so we splurged for the electrical upgrade needed for the room and did the tile ourselves (Schluter ditra/kerdi/thinset purchased from Floor n Decor).

Fixtures / Appliances - $2667.35:

  • Kohler Highline 10" Rough Opening Toilet: $382.77
  • Style Selections Drayden 24.5" Vanity: $209
  • Moen Brushed Nickel Faucet (84137SRN): $79
  • Moen Bathroom Vessel Sink Drain: $55.65
  • Delta Bellamy TP Holder + Towel Ring: $42.93
  • Electrolux Washer (EFLS527UTT): $899
  • Electrolux Gas Dryer (EFMG527UTT): $999

Contracted Out Labor + Materials - $4708.86:

Carpentry ($425):

  • Andersen Vinyl Replacement Window (January 2020): $425

Plumbing ($1245.92):

  • Washer Supply Shut-off Valves (July 2020): $356.13
  • Dryer Gas Shut-Off Valve (September 2020): $175.93
  • Vanity Valve Stub Out / Replacement + Cold Supply Shift, Toilet Valve (December 2020): $310.28
  • Vanity and Toilet Install (January 2021): $403.58

Electrical ($2820):

  • 100A Sub Panel to Garage to run 2x 20A dedicated lines for washer + dryer (permitted)
  • 2x hardwired heat detectors in garages tied into main smoke detectors
  • Garage GFIs on their own 2x 20A lines for workshop and to utilize the laundry room's junction boxes
  • Couple of 4 and 3-way switches replaced while they were here

We went for the sub panel since it was basically the same labor as running a single line from the basement, over the den in the ceiling, and down into the garage and into the laundry room.

Washer Dryer Delivery/Removal/Install: $138.00

**Materials - $135

This sub isn't what I expected, with tons of items that are pretty much ancient and unable to be acquired in any normal fashion. I thought I'd share my experience with a Cabrio washer dryer approaching 6 years of ownership without a problem while everything else I bought has broken down since.

I made a post which went pretty viral on r/homeimprovement regarding shitty appliances breaking down within a few years unlike less than 10 years ago when good quality appliances were still sold. Well I guess I wasn't the only one pretty damn annoyed at this major inconvenience and someone pointed me to this sub. I expected to finally find some quality shit but it's pretty consistently just stuff from a billion years ago that is still working but can't be purchased really. Just get lucky to find it.

Well that being said, I bought my house 6 years ago and bought brand new appliances from a local Sears that was closing down and had some great sales. $4000 fridge for $750 type of deals. I pretty much bought everything brand new from there and everything outlasted the warranty... By a day. I've been so pissed because quite literally everything lasted within a month of warranty ending. And these shitty ass warranties are like 3 years max all in.

The only thing still standing and doing extremely well is my Cabrio washer dryer combo. I haven't had a single problem. Performance has been wonderful and for context, I have a joint family home with 6 people so the laundry is pretty much always going on.

So for anyone looking for washer dryer combo that doesn't look like shit and isn't something you'll have to find at an antique roadshow, this is pretty solid. I'm sure some people will see my experience of 6 years as nothing much to write home about BUT this is considering a product available immediately and easily. Also, with most appliances not lasting even 3 years, at least you know you can get 6 here.

My dryer's heating element died because I'm a dumbass who didn't clean my dryer vent. Had a pro clean it out and they found a simple issue with the vent that killed my dryer.

I'm a first time home owner and I bought Speed Queen washer and dryers since I'd read about them being reliable machines. Indeed they are, but over time we noticed it was taking longer and longer to get large loads of clothes totally dry.

A couple weeks ago the heat went out in the dryer so we called a technician in as it was still under warranty. He confirmed it was the heating element, got it replaced free of charge, and then advised we contact a dryer vent cleaning company to come check it out as he pulled out a huge wad of dryer lint which he suspected was the culprit that killed our heating element.

Lo and behold, the vent cleaner pointed out that the builders of our house screwed the pooch on the dryer vent. He said they used a metallic mesh like the type you see in insect screens in your windows, and because it's such a fine mesh, the lint can't escape. It backs up, clogs up, and eventually your dyer bites the dust. He tore it out and replaced it with the correct vent screen, mentioning that this is a common issue he deals with multiple times a week.

Happy to report my dryer is kicking ass again and no longer takes two drying sessions to do the job.

Don't make the same mistake I did! Make sure your appliances are registered so you can use the warranty, and definitely make sure you're getting that dryer vent cleaned out regularly!

Company didn't clean my dryer duct

I purchased my home about a year ago and one of the first things I did was hire a local company (~$400) to clean all the vents, clean the furnance, and clean the dryer vents. I cleaned the appliances the previous owner left which included a 2 year old dryer. I vacuumed it well, removed the back, and got all the lint and dog hair out. About September the dryer stopped working as it just came out of warranty. It was a thermal fuse and I was able to replace it. End of December the dryer smells of burning plastic during a load so I stopped it. The insulation around a wire melted. I called the manufacturer and they send a local repair company for free. The repair guy said my vents are clogged. I showed him the invoice showing they were cleaned almost a year to the day. He says they didn't do it beyond 10ft or so and recommended a different company. The company came today and cleaned 48ft of my dryer duct and spent almost as much time as the first company did with my whole house, furnace, and dryer duct. He said there was no way the first company went past the first elbow. I called and emailed the first company to complain and asked for them to reimburse me for this second company. They initially refused. Was I asking too much to be reimbursed the second company's fee for the dryer vent cleaning ($120 versus me paying $70 as part of the first company's whole house package)? Should I push to get any money back? If so what are some options I have or should I just leave bad reviews for every site and BBB? I feel fortunate that there wasn't anything worse than a melted wire and a couple thermal fuses, but also think this company needs to have some accountability for not doing a job they charged me for. The repair tech also told me the heating element might go out sooner than normal as a result of the overheating. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Edit: I appreciate all the comments. I had no idea the ducting was that long as I've only lived in the house for a year and haven't had a reason to check. It is long because it goes up a floor then wraps around before being routed out. I'm guessing that a previous owner rerouted to an opposite wall after a remodel. Fixing the duct is just another item to add to my enver increasing to do list. Besides two different pros telling me that the ducts weren't cleaned past the first bend about 10 ft up the dryer's performance indicates that they weren't cleaned properly. Clothes dry in half to a quarter of the time. Also it i
