Stop letting certain dog breeds breed.

Pugs, bulldogs, all of those dogs. Half of them can’t even breed naturally. I’m not saying that we should kill them, just stop allowing them to reproduce. Maybe you could crossbreed them with other dogs to eliminate certain traits that cause a lot of health problems and create a new breed but having cute dogs isn’t worth putting them through misery because they can’t breathe.

[Help] Any science people can recommend to help me better understand ancient dog breeds, breeds in general, and how the breeds we currently have came about?

Any articles/books/whatever else for me to read?

I’m kinda stumped on why we can’t make new breeds. Why should old dog breeds be the only ones that are legitimate? Why can’t we make new dog breeds today?

This questions got me wanting to look into ancient dog breeds and how our current breeds came around, etc...

Possible dog breeds [BREEDS]

Hi all,

After the end of this quarantine, my family may be looking to get a dog (it’s only an idea at this point). We have a small flock of chickens, young children, two cats and not a great deal of space (have a backyard which isn’t super roomy and has lots of trees), and would prefer something on the smaller side of size. I appreciate that these conditions aren’t preferable for a dog, but are there any breeds (acknowledging the variance in individuals) that would be alright for these? Or should we just wait until further down the track? Thanks in advance.

I don't read speak Vietnamese well enough yet to be able to find out a lot, but I do seem them around where I live, and I was curious about knowing more.

For more detail, the dogs shown in order are

Bac Ha dog, bred by hill tribes in Bac Ha Province Vietnam, guard and hunting dogs, there is one near me, it's a big dog.

Hmong bob tail/docked tail dog, I am not sure if they are docked at birth I think it's natural. Bred by Hmong hill tribes also for hunting and guarding. About lab size.

Phu Quoc dog, figure they're well known about.

Indochina dingo, friends have had these or prob more likely dingo cross. Intelligent, totally can understand an order, not necessarily inclined to obey it.

[BREEDS] Help us find my new sidekick, THE dog our kids will always remember

**Help our family get excited about the next 10-15 years with a dog who will be THE dog in our kids' childhood memories. Us: Late 30s, kindergarten daughter and 2yo son, plus house cat and 2 elderly chickens. We're thinking we'd like to adopt a puppy to have the opportunity to socialize them, set boundaries and open up their experiences early on. While we've both spent more of our lives with dogs than without, neither of us has had a puppy since we were young pups ourselves.

We live in the Northeast (snow!) in a historic village setting--very pedestrian. We have a large yard and live a couple minutes from a lovely trail system in an area with a lot of preserves in woods and along the coast, easy access to hiking and more.

I'm freelance and have a home studio, so this dog would be my near-constant companion. In the coming years we'll be walking the kids to/from school. Due to our kids, neighborhood and friends it’s essential we raise a dog that’s good with children.**

  1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
  • Husband and I both grew up with dogs. Him: Dalmations. Me: Rottweilers (and a sweet dog from a Rottweiler rescue who was likely a Rottie-Chow mix). My parents had a Great Dane when I was a toddler too, as did several aunts/uncles. My parents involved us kids in dog training classes.

  • Husband adopted a dog in his 20s who was a Boston Min Pin mix. She was not a designer dog, but the product of two pure breds owned by a shut-in. She had never even been OUTSIDE before he adopted her and she was almost a year old. Not surprisingly she had some fears and neuroses but we worked with her and she had a long and relatively (she was somewhat nervous/fearful) happy life. She passed away last spring at age 14.

  • When husband and I first moved in together 10+ years ago he had her and I had my 110lb rescue (also adopted in my 20s β€”he was an adult when I adopted). That dog was his own dog (mix). I adopted him from a city rescue and we did training together to bond. I lived in an apartment with a fenced yard next to a fantastic, large dog-friendly park. Ultimately he adapted to moving to another state and the country very well. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer (which we were treating - just a heartbreaker).

  • Our next dog (still had little Boston mix) we adopted in an uneven way--I was really driving the bus, because I was missing our old dog. This dog was an adult, male Great Pyrenees with some ver

Pit Bulls are a vicious and aggressive dog breed.

I get it that dog lovers love dogs so much that they would never want to admit this but it's true. Time and time again they want to victim blame the owner instead of the obviously very aggressive dog breed. I've seen them raised since puppies and attack their owners. It really doesn't make a difference rather they were raised in a good home or not.

I have a right to be upset about pugs struggling to breathe will still owning another hybrid dog breed.

Edit:

I posted this after a friend of mine yelled at me over comments I made about her decisions. She paid a breeder to have her female pug have puppies and then got upset that she had to pay for a c section and hip surgery. I said that she should have researched before she did this because it’s common in pugs for them to have trouble birthing. She said I was an a**hole for being upset over pugs when I have dogs with lots of β€œproblems” as well. My dogs have no medical issues and the β€œproblems” she’s referring to are that they tend to ignore people and leave the room when there are people around and will even run away if someone is being insistent on petting them or chasing them around. They like to play fight and have destroyed stuff in the past when bored and under stimulated. That can happen with most dog breeds though. I just don’t like watching her dog suffer because of her uneducated decisions.

I (19M) own wolf dogs as I have the space and time to take care of them. They were rescued from a breeder when they were puppies and dislike everyone but me and my boyfriend as we raised them but they don’t trust most people. My dogs have no health concerns. Mostly they will get aggressive over food and will growl at each other and play fight. Never anything dangerous or aimed at humans. I live on a ranch and rescue many wolf dog hybrids and have even some actual wolves rescued from side shows or circuses.

I have the opinion that pugs should not be bred. They have trouble breathing for f*cks sake. I know people have been trying to breed out some of the issues with pugs but I don’t think it’s enough. From my point of view, we as humans are giving these dogs a harder time in life than is necessary.

Dog breeds that are prone to serious health issues should be banned.

Any dog breeds that have been messed with so much that they are prone to health issues, such as pugs, shouldn't be allowed. These dogs can suffer for most of their lives, possibly in pain, and might not live that long. Not to mention the unnecessary vet bills to get these health issues sorted out.

I don't care if a pug is 'cute'; it can't fucking breathe properly, keeping it is cruel. These breeds of dogs should be banned to prevent unnecessary suffering. The same should apply to any other pets that are prone to heath issues.

CMV: The existence of anxious breeds of dogs is just cruel on the face of it.

We have been preferentially breeding dog traits we like for thousands of years. One thing essentially all dog breeds have in common, because we’ve created the trait through hundreds of generations of purposeful choices, is the emotional need to be near us. It’s so pronounced in some breeds (and individuals) that, in my view, it really borders on cruelty. To create and own an animal that is constantly depressed when we’re not around, then leave it alone for eight to ten hours a day, (WFH notwithstanding) simply because we enjoy the emotional rush of its happiness and relief when we return and temporarily relieve its misery, is unforgivably selfish and borderline sadistic.

I don’t know what remedy exists for this beyond ceasing to breed the most anxious and nervous little dogs. In the far future, I can see a more enlightened culture condemning us for being so blind to what we were doing to this wonderful species.

Edit: A number of people are focused on the β€œremedy” I mentioned, which I think is a bit of an afterthought. I would amend it to acknowledge that another acceptable solution might be convincing humanity on the whole that we need to be aware of the essential cruelty of imprisoning a very social animal in isolation for long periods of time. Many individual dogs, and presumably some breeds on the whole, are far more emotionally needy than others, and this should be understood.

The view I’m asking you to change isn’t how we fix this, but the fact that it is a serious problem that most dog owners fail to acknowledge or take into account when they choose to get a dog, and that the fact that anxious dogs are anxious is our responsibility. When they were wolves, they lived in packs and their social needs were met. We seized on their pack mentality, redirected it toward ourselves, and preferentially bred individuals who were more attached to us. (That’s domestication) The most extreme forms of this are tantamount to cruelty.

[Fluff] Does your dog have a favorite breed?

My Leonberger Mix (9months) is absolutely obsessed with Pomeranians. Sure, he has his best friend whom he meets once or twice a day, but all that friendship goes out the window anytime he sees a Pomeranian. When we're walking and we spot one down the street he starts hopping like a kangaroo and wagging his tail, and he's not one to really ever wag his tail! It's a bit distressing for me since he's a massive dog and people might see his excitement as "oh no big scary dog coming at us", but he's just utterly in love with Poms. We're still working on focusing his attention on me when we walk past other dogs, it's going very well so far but we still need more work when he sees Pomeranians.

When he actually gets to play with them he'll even stay laying down or roll over on his back if they want to wrestle him. He's extremely gentle with them. A few times I caught him just curling up with a Pomeranian that visits sometimes when they get tired. HΓ€lge usually never sleeps in a ball (he's always sprawled on his back) unless he has a Pomeranian curled up in with him.

Other than that he's very fond of Lurchers. While he is a tall dog at 65cm, he's actually rather lean. I'm guessing he loves Lurchers since they're about his size but not really heavy, as all other dogs his height are usually over 35kg so he gets hurt on accident by them.

A little bit of dog tax here!

[Discussion] As a dog crazy child I was obsessed with Australian Shepherds, now I wouldn't own a herding breed at all. Tell me about your revelations!

I had a multigenerational mix breed, blue merle with a blue and a brown eye, product of my parents and rural neighbors inability to responsibly keep intact dogs. She had herding dog bidability, I did 4H obedience and showmanship and treats were not a massive part of that training.

She made me obsessed with getting a red merle tri colored Aussie, I wrote short western stories, the protagonist always had one by their side.

Knowing what I do now about dogs and training, it's sporting breeds all the way, give me a crazy Wirehaired pointer and I will be happy!

So I want to know what breeds as a kid you were obsessed with and what breeds as an adult you own now.

[Vent] I swear - do NOT BREED YOUR DOG if you know absolutely nothing about freaking dogs!!!!

I work at a DIY dog wash, so we do get "breeders" that come in, or preggo dogs, or people who talk about wanting to breed their dogs.

We always always try to be as nice as possible while making sure they know that they need a license (state law, but it's just BS honestly), and trying to talk to them about why, how, genetic testing, etc. It can be difficult to get across to some of them.

But THIS ONE. JFC.

She comes in with a "pure blood" Chow (no no & generations of no) - long lab like face, long short body, no wrinkles, no curled tail.

The lady said "she was a blue something, its uncommon" .. blue coloration?? No. A BLUE TONGUE. YOU MEAN LIKE THE SUPER COMMON TRAIT IN CHOWS??!??!?

SO. I gave her my normal talk, but I was definitely a lot more up front about it.

But. Then. Then she freaking goes

"Omg so much hair!! Is she just losing her puppy coat?"

WHAT DO YOU MEAN. YOU BOUGHT A CHOW YOU WANT TO BREED YOU DIDNT REALIZE SHE COULD ALREADY BE GOING INTO HEAT YOU DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND THAT THEY SHED ALL THE TIME AND APPARENTLY "Lol, go easy on me! This is my first dog"

What the f*** goes through people's minds? Seriously.

I was honest with her about everything. I showed her a pic of an actual Chow. And I really really hope I changed her mind. But some days I remember why I don't want to work in the dog industry anymore. I love dogs, and my job is amazing. But man is it heartbreaking some days.

Can you recommend a dog breed? [Breeds]
  1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

I have another dog currently.

  1. Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

Nope :)

  1. Describe your ideal dog.

Small, affectionate, intelligent (doesn't necessarily mean easy to train)

  1. What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

I really like dalmatians, but they're too big. I also like Japanese Chin and Shelties.

  1. What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

Lots of tricks, as well as basic obedience. I enjoy teaching agility to my current dog, but that is not a requirement for my second dog.

Care Commitments

  1. How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

I will spend as much time as the dog needs/wants me to spend.

  1. How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

I have a very large yard. It can play with my other dog in the yard whenever it pleases. I will take it for walks every 1-2 days. I will invite friends dogs over to play with it too. I do not like dog parks, as sometimes other peoples dogs aren't the most well behaved.

  1. How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

I can brush the dog whenever necessary. I can pay a professional for the rest.

Personal Preferences

  1. What size dog are you looking for?

Small (under 20 lbs)
