[Algebra] Question on the multiplication and division property of equality vs the addition and subtraction property of equality, in regards to terms

Why is it that when solving an equation with more than 1 term on one or both sides of the equation, the multiplication/division property of equality requires you to multiply or divide by every term in the entire equation, whereas the addition/subtraction property of equality only requires you to add or subtract once per side?

Is it possible to have a divorce that does not involve an equal division of property/assets?

My wife and I have been geographically, financially, socially and materially separated for the vast majority of our <5 year marriage (military). For all intents and purposes, we already have two separate lives.

Would I (or a lawyer) be able to craft the divorce documentation such that she would have an "easy-out" option and simply have to sign and dissolve the marriage as it is without tallying everything up and dividing by 2?

I am currently a resident of KY. Thanks!

MVIS: Shiny Laser Go Pew ⚡ No But Seriously They Are Gonna Take Over The LiDAR Industry

So, the day has come, and MicroVision's market cap is finally big enough so that you won't get banned for mentioning it on WSB. But what is it? Why have they seen an 800%+ increase in three months? Where are they headed? Allow me to explain.

About Them

MicroVision, Inc. (MVIS) makes futuristic-as-fuck laser technology that's used in self driving cars and augmented reality headsets. This already sets them apart from a major competitors like Velodyne (VLDR), which focuses solely on LiDAR for self driving cars.

Sumit Sharma, the CEO, was head of operations at Google's Project GLASS and has worked to map hardware development at Motorola, also worked at Jawbone. Source

Why have they been increasing 800% in three months while similar companies in the same sector see a fraction of that gain?

Because their tech is much more advanced than the competition, and they were (are) criminally undervalued.

The reason they're so undervalued is because the first thing hedge funds see when they research a potential investment is the balance sheet, and on paper MVIS looks like shit. (Low assets, high liabilities) Even I saw the movement back in December, did some research, and was like "Wtf is this? I need to get puts" But once you do research into their product, who their customers are, and the future of the industry that they are involved in, you see that MicroVision is a turnaround story similar to that of Plug Power; both are 90's futuristic companies that people got way too excited about in 2000, have struggled to make it to 2020, but now are about to finally have their heyday. And they got a $13 million equity facility (loan) in December that greatly improved their balance sheet, making them appeal to institutions, and bringing Vanguard and Blackrock to invest in MVIS days later. I actually had a hedge fund manager tell me that MVIS was doomed to run out of cash in Q1 2020, but if they secured funds then they would have a lot of potential. I go over that in the comments.

AITA for refusing to divide the property 3 ways?

I (42M) am being harassed by my family for refusing to sign papers that would divide the family property 3 ways.

We live in a piece of land that used to be 600sqm. 15 years ago, my aunt (Aunt1), the eldest of the siblings, decided to move to the U.S with her family, selling her "portion" of the property. Since there were already houses built, it would have been difficult to equally divide the land so instead they decided to sell the whole house, which took up 280sqm. The remainder was two houses. One which as Aunt2's house (230sqm), and my moms house which was around 90sqm. My mom has long been having mental issues, which made me the executor of her legal care and property.

Recently, Aunt2 has declared of wanting to sell her house and move to the countryside. They prepared papers for legally parting the remaining land, and asked that I sign it to get it over with. When I looked at the papers, it declared that the land was going to be divided 3 ways, between my mother and 2 aunts. I of course asked why this was the case. They decided that my aunt in the U.S, who sold off almost half the land years ago, was still be part of the arrangement. I refused, saying that it doesn't make sense that she is still part of the division, when she clearly sold her part years ago. After much discussion, it turns out that when Aunt1 sold her share, she gave a hefty payout to Aunt2, but excluded my mother claiming she wouldn't need it due to her mental issues. This angered me and I refused to sign anything, unless it was a 2 way split. and that it has to be equal, even if they have to demolish a part of their existing house.

The entire family is calling me selfish, and that I am an AH for preventing my elderly aunts2's retirement, and that it's not my call since my mom is still alive and she doesn't object. I disagree, specially since my mother is no longer lucid enough to make such decisions, which the law agrees on when It declared me executor to her legal matters.

But the constant nagging, some from people who have always supported me growing up, is making me soften. Am I really the AH for not allowing my aunt1 be part of the deal? Should I just sign it to keep the peace?

Edit: Wow, thank you so much for your responses. There were some great suggestion there, and even an award. Thank you redditors! I may not be able to respond to all your comments, but I read them all and appreciate all your input. I'll try to get in touch with a lawyer and see what me and my mom's

The Atrocity of Slavery in the Old Testament: A Condemnation

The Old Testament approves of slavery.

This fact has been one of the most difficult for Christians and Jews to contend with in modern times. Every decent human being living today agrees that slavery is deeply wrong, and yet the Old Testament allows it, makes it legal, and treats it as a normal social institution. This is an unforgivable moral evil, and immediately by itself shows the gods of both Judaism and Christianity to be evil and unworthy of worship. Believers in the Old Testament have worked hard to produce endless excuses, justifications, and sophistry to distract away from this horrid truth. So today, I'd like to discuss slavery in the Old Testament, and refute the many defenses of it.

The Basics

For this post, I'll be using Google's definition of "slave":

>A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

The Old Testament's most important passage about slavery is Leviticus 25:39-46. Here it is in full.

>39 “‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves. 40 They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee. 41 Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors. 42 Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. 43 Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.
>
>44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

This passage clearly and unambiguously allows slavery. It also summarizes many relevant laws, and lays out a framework for the structure of slave law.

Most obviously, the passage creates a sharp division between two classes of people: Israelites and foreigners. Whenever reading a verse about slavery in the Old Testament, you must remember to ask - who does this apply to, Israelites or foreigners? The law is very different for the two groups,

Discussion - will blockchain replace stock markets? I've been curious...

I'll be 50 this year, retired at 47, love investing in the markets and have been doing pretty well. I wish I would have started early and never worked (I owned hotels and rental properties, such hard work), and wish I never bought a house and just airbnb'd through life. I've been watching everything that's happening in relation to 4IR - the 4th Industrial Revolution - and find a lot to be really fascinating. Whether it is AI, automation, DeFi, blockchain, 3D printing, robotics, ghost kitchens, dark stores, work-from-anywhere, shared homes/cars, self-driving, etc., I just think we're about to see a lot happening and won't go into all that fascinates me there, I'll keep this to stocks.

So... if a company goes public to raise capital then what happens if there are better, cheaper methods to raise capital through blockchain decentralized finance? Wouldn't it make more sense to start moving in this direction, and keep more of your company for yourself while not giving as much away to public investors? Are we headed in this direction, and if so, would there be any reason for the current market models to exist? If no stock markets existed, would this create more or less class division? Perhaps that rests on the structure of the company and there could be more wage equality?

I look forward to your replies, and thank you for your responses. I remember being a kid in the 70s when people used to say become a truck driver or a stockbroker because those things just couldn't ever be automated... wow, coming up on 50 man... just you wait kiddos!

Earth Born

Thousands of years from now

She was old and she felt it. Her joints ached and her back was sore. The climb down to the dig site had taken a lot out of her.

At least it was pressurised and self-contained. She hated working in atmosphere suits. When she was told about the discovery on this lifeless world she had worried she would have to be spending her time sorting through remains in one of their bulky frames.

As it was though?

The structure had been built to survive. The ancients has dug deep down and carved out a habitat deep in the basalt of the dead planet above.

There had been no atmosphere in it but the archeological team had provided one which meant mercifully she could...

“Doctor? Doctor come quick!”

The voice of her young colleague sounded over her communicator. Over excitable that one was, she felt.

She thumbed her device.

“What is it?”

“I found something. Its old.”

“The rocks are old, man,” she snaps back, “be more specific.”

“A recording. Just a voice. But it’s ancient.”

“How ancient?”

“I can follow it but the language sounds at least 800 years old.”

The old doctor straightens at once. An 800 year old recording?

Minutes later she entered the chamber he was working in, seeing the younger man stood by a small black box.

“Well?”

“You have to hear this Doctor...”

He presses a button on the box and after a second or two, a voice begins...

Recording starts

Earthborn.

A single word, so seemingly innocent. And yet its meaning not only has changed over the centuries, but the use of the word has become crucial in understanding how we have developed as a species.

Today’s lesson is part of the Harmony of Past Times and Reconciliation Of Destructive Urges section of your teachings. Through study of the use of the word ‘Earthborn’ we see the true nature of humanity revealed.

The earliest function of it dates back to the era of the Unification Wars. As humanity began to settle on other planets, we have records of the term and many variations of it, being used to denote the earliest division of humans- those born on Earth as opposed to those born in the colonies of Mars, Europa, Io, the Belt and Jupiter Station.

But it carried no real significance back then. It was a catch all term just denoting the physical location of your birth. Mankind had too many other labels to use for itself back then.

The Unification Era is often called ‘the dark ages’ as if it were some mysterious period we know nothi

Lawsplainer (Not Really): How the Common Law Winds Up Looking Like Bad Code

This is more a rant than anything, but last week I was wading through some moderately-but-not-notoriously difficult (American) "case law," and--long story short--it wound up taking me longer to figure out the basics of the legal doctrine I was researching than did for me to achieve a workable understanding of the EPR paradox. And this seems like...less than optimal circumstances, to put it charitably.

[By way of background: Taking after the late great British empire, the US is a common law system, which means that, on top of a whole body of law coming from the constitution and various statutes and regulations, decisions in individual "cases" (in which judges interpret statutes and fill in the various gaps they leave) wind up quasi-creating new legal rules—and that "case law" has in turn come to constitute the vast majority of the existing legal rules out there.]

In any event, aside from making me want to raze England to the ground and sow it with salt like the Assyrians of old, my frustration last week got me thinking that what the common law looks like, in essence, is badly written code. "Spaghetti code" isn't quite the right term, but I think "bitrot" is exactly on point:

BITROT: Code will generally start to fail as the operating system, libraries, or other systems are updated. The newer versions have more features, take different parameters, or sometimes make different assumptions. In other cases, the programmers have fixed a bug that your code assumed was there. The old code doesn’t fail completely, at least at first. But it starts to get creaky as more and more calls to the OS or the libraries begin to fail. If you don’t invest in renewing your knowledge and improving your code, you start to rot like an old fish. Folks can be harsh when pointing this out.

This--especially the bit about different parameters and assumptions--is pretty much exactly what happens with the common law.

Super simplified example: At t0 Congress enacts a statute with X assumptions ("Let's pass this statute so plaintiffs will be able to sue police officers who violate their rights)...then at t1 a judge issues a case with Y assumptions ("Surely, Congress couldn't have wanted plaintiffs to be able to sue officers who violated their rights while just doing their jobs, so that statute only applies to police officers' "discretionary" actions taken outside the "color of law")...then at

indian caste —>not caste; british giben caste —>caste

Caste system as we know today is a result of colonial distortion. The British misunderstood the social fabric of India and basically superposed their class structure over it, creating a "haves" and "have nots" demarcation. Most became poor and backward because their skills and livelihoods were destroyed by the colonial greed. Before that, even during Muslim rule across the land, castes were basically social groups that specialized on different skilled professions, and functioned as economic engines that generated very high GDP.

Angus Maddison in his famous paper calculated that India as a whole contributed close to 25% global GDP. India had the Gurukul system where Hindu temples functioned as learning centers for different communities. They did a survey across India and found that literacy levels were much higher than that in Britain.

They decided to wipe out the roots of Indian prosperity by destroying the Indian industrial infrastructure - steel making, zinc extraction, cotton and clothing, ship building, spice trade and so on. In addition, they imposed a European style tax system where the tax rates did not change with varying impacts of climate and production. Tax was fixed and raised to almost impossible levels.

Many lost their lands and professional means as they had to borrow and become debt ridden. When they could not pay even their interests, their properties were seized and many became homeless. Under colonial administration, India suffered 6 major man induced famines due to which millions perished. It was unheard of before, especially in terms of scale.

The Gurukul system was destroyed by bringing all Hindu temples and charities under government control. With heavy taxation, temples lost substantial amount of revenue from the lands granted to them and after some time they could not sustain free education.

This led to high levels of illiteracy and loss of skills. The British brought their style of schools and education so that they could generate low paid clerks for their administration. All these changes began to change India into a subservient population that lost its direction and roots to its ancestral way of existence that was natural and had evolved over time.

This is what led to severe discriminatory levels of social injustice across the land. Those who became agents for the British became well off and they maintained their power hold over the others who were pushed to the fringe. This continued after independence and politicians

If Latin America would become a federal state ¿How it would be? ¿How would you like it to be? I created some maps, flags and lore

My idea for an Union of Latin American States

Hi everybody, just a disclaimer, this is a personal project that goes beyond maps, but i would like to share it with you all, i hope you like it

If you want more lore just ask, thank you all.

These are common questions that you might have:

  1. This is just not feasible

Well, yeah, I did not want to make an idealistic scenario neither a fully realistic one. This is just a thought experiment, and is asking If for some reason the entire continent united ¿How such a behemoth would work and how would we like it to be?

  1. ¿How federal is this Union?

It is barely a state, is a loose confederation, state governments have almost as much autonomy as the countries of the EU, with some exceptions; environment, defense, public service, education and healthcare where federal institutions have the last words.

  1. ¿What are these reserve things?

These are fully functional states carve out of existing states for their immense ecological and strategic importance. People here have more liberties than the rest of the federation. They barely pay income and added value taxes, receive a basic income (Like in Alaska) and preferential treatment, but in contrast have to follow really strict environmental rules and regulations and heavy penalties for pollution.

  1. ¿¿¡¡¡WHAT DID YOU DO TO MEXICO AND BRAZIL!!!??

Sorry Brazil and Mexico-Sama you are too big (sorry for that cringy otaku joke)

But yeah, is sad but Brazil would have 1/3 and Mexico 1/6 of the population. Those countries would be underrepresented in Congress if they are considered just one state and overrepresented if each State (Alagoas, Chiapas etc.) would be considered equal to Colombia or Argentina for example, so I choose a middle path. The idea is that any state has more than 50 million people (1/12 of the Union). I chose to cluster states vaguely trying to follow regional sentiments, in the case of Brazil I choose the regions.

  1. ¿Where does the Anfictionic City name come from?

It was the name of the meeting proposed by Bolívar and Miranda to create a United states of the Spanish and Portuguese colonies. It also sounds good both in english, Spanish and Portuguese.

  1. ¿How is the territorial organization?

📷

The Union is divided into federal entities: States, Federal reserve states, the Federal Capital and Federal dependencies.

Federal dependencies are eit

Yang vs Tifa: An Examination and Critique. Also featuring DB Critique

So, as the title says, this will be an examination and critique of the episode Yang vs Tifa, and a bit of a critique on DB as a whole. Yes, this is an essay. A lengthy one. I put more effort into this than I did most of my college assignments, so get comfortable and bring some snacks. Enjoy it or don’t, either way is fine. I’m not expecting everyone to agree with me, but I think I bring up some valid points. This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive account, but instead my interpretation of the episode and DB as a series. Here we go!

DB has the honor and privilege of using characters from other franchises, representing them as they see fit to create their own show. Therefore, they should handle this privilege with reverence and responsibility. Because these characters mean so much to the fans and people that are invested in them. If they forego this obligation, I think it can be harmful, considering DB’s influence, reach, and popularity. Without the great amount of characters they have at their disposal, Death Battle wouldn’t be possible in the first place. So, misrepresenting and disrespecting them does the characters and fans of those characters, a great disservice. The characters are essentially the biggest component of Death Battle, so they deserve respect no matter what your personal opinion on them is.

As the leading authority in character debates (like it or not) I think most would agree it is important for DB to represent characters accurately and get the correct outcome as many times as possible. But why is this important you ask? It’s simple: to avoid fandom toxicity and backlash. The more correct outcomes they achieve, and the more thorough in their representations they are, the less likely fandoms are to display toxic behavior. As many people consider DB as the word of God and infallible experts of vs debates, it is important they have high standards in the matchups they choose, the research they perform, and conclusions they come to.

Nothing is worse when a fanbase thinks their character is somehow superior just because they defeated the losing character in a DB. And people rubbing the result in the face of the fan of the losing character is childish, demeaning, and disrespectful. DB plays a big part in the spawning of this type of behavior, and that is perhaps my biggest criticism towards the show. Yes, this type of behavior would still exist without DB, but DB magnifies it to a great extent and propagates it out into the world fo

Xenoblade Chronicles: 1 vs 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 for the Nintendo Wii (and 3DS and Switch), while initially a cult classic, has become one of the most well-regarded modern JRPGs. It's plot, characters, expansive world and environments have all received extensive praise, and its protagonist Shulk got into Smash, which is pretty cool. Its sequel, however, has been a much more divisive release, resulting in a bunch of XC1 purists and some backlash from XC2 fans, who say the first game wasn't that good, actually. I'm pretty much a centrist on this debate as I think both games are about equally good, but have their own strengths and weaknesses. So in this rant I'll pretty much be defending both games and then giving my thoughts on why XC2 is controversial. This rant contains spoilers.

Now, in defense of XC2. Most complaints about the game can be boiled down to one horrific word: anime. Yes, the dreaded touch of Japanimation has claimed yet another property, transforming the serious and intellectual world of Xenoblade into a nightmare landscape of fanservice and poor attempts at comedy. This accusation is pretty unfair. As many have pointed out, the first game is no stranger to anime booby. Sharla wears exclusively booty shorts, most of Fiora's armors have synthetic skin up the wazoo, and Vanea has massive mechanical mammaries (complete with jiggle physics, somehow). Additionally, its lack of anime is potentially the result of technical limitations: the recent definitive edition is plenty anime, and it's... the definitive edition. While its true that the second game stepped up its tropes, that isn't enough to break an experience, and it has plenty of strengths over the first game. XC2's worldbuilding is more extensive, with a variety of cultures and nations developed alongside the overall locale of Alrest. Its characters are (mostly) deeper, with more nuanced and elaborate motivations, most pronounced with its villains and the central Mythra, who is arguably deeper than any member of XC1's cast. Its plot overall is more complex, with a variety of actors doing things for a variety of reasons, while the first game's plot can mostly be boiled down to the actions of two forces with our protagonists caught in the middle. Finally, its combat gameplay is fire, but I'm focusing less on the game aspect as I'm not an expert in either.

That said, I have some defenses for the first game. Many XC2 fans have the sentiment that the surprise antagonist, Zanza, is just a generic evil god and Egil w

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru

The efforts to malign Pt.Nehru have intensified last few years. The efforts of the right to make Nehru irrelevant makes me laugh tho, how do erase history especially in the age of the internet ? Well they certainly are trying 1 2

It's curious that Mr Modi since 2014 has somewhat refrained from criticizing other members of the Nehru Gandhi dynasty. He ignores Rajiv Gandhi as if he didn’t matter. Even more important, he is always careful not to attack Indira Gandhi. He does invoke the Emergency often, but is careful not to take on the senior Mrs. Gandhi.

He is also all praise for select congress leaders like Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, he even praised Dr Singh once. So what is this curious fascination with Nehru specifically ?

It is a genuinely, and deeply, held belief in the RSS that Nehru never deserved to be given charge of India in 1947. He grabbed it by manipulating Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten and denied it to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. And once he usurped power, he just ruled as a "king".

To sum up, Nehru ‘deviously’ cast new India in a non-Hindu image. This led to a whole range of problems, from minority-appeasement to neglect of the military, slavery to Western thought, economic models and so on. Of course, an entire Nehruvian intellectual ecosystem grew around him to dominate India’s thought for seven decades.

For Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and their generation of BJP leaders, almost all of who emerged from a non-English speaking, non-Westernised environment, this is an article of faith. That is why Modi isn’t faking it when he makes 23 critical references to Nehru in one speech. He speaks from deep inside his heart.

Maybe that's all there it is to that explain the Nehru fascination. But these are politicians, getting butthurt over RSS's exclusion that can't be it. Maybe it's pure politics, he believes the Congress rests on the Dynasty, which, in turn, is rooted in the widely-respected Nehruvian universe. If he can chip away at that, the Gandhis would decline, so also their inherited ideology and their party. Other leaders, smaller opposition parties, he can handle piecemeal. In the process, he will also create space for himself and his successors to recast India in the RSS way of thinking. "NEW" India.

[EVENT] The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen

October 1971

Work on a formal constitution for the PRSY started almost immediately after the Glorious Corrective Move of 1968, but has taken until now to be finalized, as the state has been distracted by numerous other enterprises over the past years. However, at the Seventh Party Congress of the National Liberation Front (which, as an aside, elected at the same Congress to merge with the Democratic Popular Union Party and the Popular Vanguard Party to form the new United National Front Organization (UNFO)), the government proudly presented the new constitution of South Yemen.

Below is a summary of the promulgated constitution.

##Preamble

Imbued with the responsibility of showing the Yemeni nation the road to a future of peace and socialism,

in view of the historical fact that imperialism, under the leadership of the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and in concert with feudal, reactionary, and Zionist cabals, split Yemen and the Arab nation in order to build a base of imperialism and a struggle against socialism, contrary to the vital interests of the nation,

affirming that the struggle of the Yemeni people against feudalism, colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism is dialectically correlated to the struggle against the unnatural situation of the false division of the Yemeni land, and that Yemen constitutes a historical, economic, and geographic unity,

affirming that the struggle of the Yemeni people will continue until the construction of a United Democratic Yemen under the leadership of the Yemeni Working Class,

affirming that the struggle of our Yemeni people is dialectically correlated with the struggle of the Arab and other peoples on the way to freedom, democratic and social progress, and peace, and that our struggle is interconnected with the struggle of the Arab revolution movement for the purpose of realizing the democratic, progressive unity of the Arab people,

regarding the achievements of our people as a revolutionary contribution to the international and Arab revolutionary movements,

imbued by the will to continue unswervingly and in free decision on the road of peace, social justice, democracy, socialism, and international friendship,

the Workers in the Cities and in the Countryside of Yemen have given themselves this Socialist Constitution.

Open Discussion about Ethnic based Federalism vs Geographical One.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” , George Santayana

We are in a very unique and interesting time once again, and the outcome of this war, I believe, will determine the fate of Ethiopia. Many of you in this sub believe that once Abiy controls Mekele, then that will be the end of TPLF. Well, if past history is any indication, Weyene III just begun. If you think that this will be the end of it, then please read the following report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) about past revolts or rebellion in Ethiopia: https://www.hrw.org/reports/pdfs/e/ethiopia/ethiopia.919/c3wollo.pdf

However, this time around, I think, secession will be in the table with more support. Well, the most majority of Somalians also want secession, and it is gaining support in the Oromia also. Therefore my question to Ethiopians who oppose ethnic federalism, is it worth it to stick to your ideology and see your beloved country Balkanized or accept the fact that many people in Ethiopia also favors ethnic federalism and it is imperative, more than ever, to have a national dialogue? Here is a research survey that conducted recently in Ethiopia that raise this issue and others: http://afrobarometer.org/sites/default/files/ab_r8_presentation_federalism_and_constitutional_amendments_25082020.pdf

Full disclosure: I was born and raised in Addis, and my father is from Amhara and mother is from Tigray. I grew up believing in the unitary government system and thought, for sometime, that ethnic federalism would be the end of Ethiopia. However, after many readings and research my point of views and perspective started to evolve, and I am starting to believe that Ethnic federalism with full autonomy for each region is actually the only option we have if we want to continue as one country. Don’t get me wrong, ethnic federalism is imperfect and there are some issues that need an honest dialogue and discussion as pointed out by Meles Zenawi in the following interview:

“AdW: Let me explain my thinking more. Modern nationalism is a product of industrialization: nation- states emerged from the industrial revolution and the administrative apparatus necessary for the organization of mass production, as well as military competition among industrial states both in Europe and for colonie

Theory of Ground Rent & Why Rent Keeps Going up

This is an excerpt from a paper I wrote for one of my classes.

We will outline the classical theory of rent and then apply it to the urban real estate market. In so doing, we will discover that there exists an objective basis for rents to rise in the ‘long run’. The classical theory of rent is based upon a ‘pure’ system of capitalist agriculture. Such a system is composed of three persons, a landlord, a tenant farmer, and a laborer. These three persons claim incomes of rent, profits, and wages respectively; the purpose of the theory is to explain the existence of the first form of income. Given that capitalism only emerged concurrently with the abolition of serfdom and the disempowering of the nobility, this is by no means obvious. For reasons which shall be explained, David Ricardo was able to make advances in the theory by explicitly denying the possibility of its existence. It fell to Marx to refute this — i.e., to assert the possibility for the existence of an absolute rent — but this necessitates a basic understanding of value theory, to which we must turn. Having explained this, we will be able to explain the existence of absolute rent. We will invert the usual order of things by explaining differential rent afterwards. Then we will be able to apply this knowledge to cities.

For Adam Smith, the price of any reproducible commodity may be subject to day to day fluctuations in the quantity supplied and the level of effectual demand, but there was a ‘central price’ (or a value) around which these fluctuations occurred. If there was a funeral and the demand for black clothing suddenly shot up, this would explain why the price of black clothing would increase, but it would not explain why black clothing had a price in the first place, or what that price would be abstracted from this ‘shock’ such that supply and demand were in equilibrium. This central, or equilibrium, price he called the ‘natural price’, which is more or less the cost to society of producing the commodity; “what it really costs the person who brings it to market”, he says. This could be determined by ‘adding up’ (in the expression of Piero Sraffa) “what is sufficient to pay the rent of the land, the wages of the labour, and the profits of the stock employed in raising, preparing, and bringing it to the market, according to the natural rates”. Within an industry, the competition between firms for market share is such that prices tend to converge around the natural price for the simple

I’m in my mid-thirties, make $115,000 ($194,000 joint), live in the northwest and work in behavioral health.

SECTION 0: BACKGROUND

I am being deliberately vague about my age, location and job, to allow for greater transparency about my finances. I work in a very narrow field, which would make me pretty easy to identify if I more accurately pinpointed these details.

That being said, to provide some context about our decision-making about childcare, my family and I had CoVID in the mid-summer.

We had been doing everything correctly: We weren’t leaving the house, our children were out of daycare, my husband and I were working from home and running ourselves ragged also offering full-time childcare to a 2-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter. We are both essential workers in different fields and we couldn’t lighten our workload. Additionally, I can only work set hours because that’s when my patients are available. So I was keeping a more traditional schedule while my husband was doing the bulk of childcare, and then we would both be with the kids for a few hours until bedtime at 7:30, at which point my husband would burn the candle at both ends and do the majority of his work in the evening and at night. It was completely unsustainable. It was bad for our jobs, bad for our kids and bad for us.

So we hired a nanny. She came from our daycare, because our kids already knew her and she effectively lost her job when we pulled our kids. The daycare has to maintain a specific child-to-teacher ratio and removing our children took them below the enrollment necessary for her. After 4 weeks of my husband and myself providing childcare, we hired her. She was a godsend.

Fast forward, she attended a staff training at the daycare (masked, gloved, the whole 9 yards) and at that time our daycare was struck with CoVID, which meant we all got it. My family, our nanny, several staff and several families. It was a blessing in disguise, because after we all quarantined and recovered, my husband and I made the decision to send our children back to daycare. The vast majority of the families and staff there had CoVID, we knew we had antibodies (thank you, American Red Cross), and we decided the risk was acceptable.

SECTION 1: ASSETS AND DEBT (ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST $100)

Feminism is the religion of the modern day "left," and that is very, very unfortunate

[this ended up being a long post, but what the hell, I had a few minutes to spare, and maybe some of you will find it of interest]

I remember reading an essay by Adolph Reed in which he singled out "intersectionality" as the core belief system of identitarians. This was several years ago and it was the first time I had come across his work. I don't remember which essay it was (I think it was published in The Nation), but I observed at the time that even this bold iconoclast didn't dare mention the "f" word: Feminism.

Intersectionality is an attempt by feminists to cast themselves as kindred spirits with other "oppressed groups." They will acknowledge their "white privilege" so long as they get to keep their victim status as women. From their alleged oppression comes their power. This paradox was noted by the feminist-cum-MRA Warren Farrell: “Men’s greatest weakness is their facade of strength, and women’s greatest strength is their facade of weakness.” Feminism exploits this tendency rather than challenging it; you could even argue that it is the entire basis of their movement: the female is a perpetual damsel in distress, always in danger, always in need of more help by men. Men in power like being chivalrous, so they support feminism. What feminists call "benevolent sexism" is therefore the entire reason they exist. It is their raison d'extra.

Under intersectionality the "straight white male" must be the villain of the tale, because most people in power are straight white males. It's all very peculiar, because feminists are perfectly happy to date and marry this villain, and if we're being honest they would actually much prefer to date and marry the villain than the underdog. Gloria Steinem dated Henry Kissinger, no less, though that becomes less eyebrow-raising when you realize she was working for the Central Intelligence Agency at the time.

The "white male privilege" trope has been rendered absurd in the UK, where a recent equality report found that "white boys" now get the "worst start in life." Thus white males simultaneously occupy the highest and lowest rungs of society. Intersectionalists in the UK have proven themselves unable to accommodate this new reality. They haven't adjusted their pie charts, they haven't rearranged the progressive stack; no indeed, last week it was announced that white male privilege theory will now be taught in British schools. So you have one of the apparently least privileged

An Analysis of the Metaphysical Mechanisms behind the Imperial Gellar Field and Gellar Field Applications used during the Dark Age of Technology (Part 3)

This is the final part, out of 3, for a massive theory that aimed to clarify the seemingly contradictory lore about Gellar Fields.

Part 1:

Part 2:

For those of you that have managed to make it this far, here's a virtual high five from across the internet! I know for a fact that I would've stopped reading what amounts to a 36 page essay, a long time ago. I'm glad that these prior discussion interests you enough to continue reading. For those who just saw this post, I will give a recap on what was covered in the previous post.

As a Tl;Dr for

Part 1:

Part 2:

  • Gellar Fields and Veil energy are incredibly similar, to the point where we can conclude that they're probably the same thing
    • This is important because this means that the Gellar Field energy is the same energy that forms the dimensional boundary which separates Realspace and the Warp
  • Both Imperial Gellar Systems and Drukhari Anti-warp barriers can manipulate the traumatized souls of comatose psykers to ward their ships
  • What I call the "Sewn Bubble" model of Gellar Field generation involves the manipulation of a psyker's soul to distort Veil energy around a Void ship, forming a spherical barrier of Veil energy that is then stabilized by the Psyker's soul being weaved into it, akin to thread being woven into fabric
  • This "Sewn Bubble" model is also capable of justifying other instances of Gellar Fields in the lore

In this final part, I will attempt to use the lore to determine how DaOT humans would've been able to create Gellar Fields, as well as postulate who the Gellar Field's inventor could've been. Additionally, I'll use the information from the previous parts of this post to provide a snapshot on what DaOT society could've been. Finally, I'll first give a brief comparison to what other Xenos factions do to protect themselves from the warp, and then conclude this theory with closing remarks, and shortcomings

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

V. Glance at DaOT Society

Lecture on fabrial mechanics presented by Navani Kholin to the coalition of monarchs.

First you must get a spren to approach.

The type of gemstone is relevant; some spren are naturally more intergued by certain gemstones. In addition, it is essential to calm the spren with something it knows and loves. A good fire for a flamespren, for example, is a must.

Next, let the spren inspect your trap. The gemstone must not be fully infused, but also cannot be fully dun. Experiments have concluded the seventy percent of maximum Stormlight capacity works best.

If you have done your work correctly, the spren will become fascinated by its soon-to-be prison. It will dance around the stone, peek at it, float around it.

The final step in capturing spren is the most tricky, as you must remove the Stormlight from the gemstone. The specific techniques employed by each artifabrian guild are closely guarded secret, entrusted only to their most senior members.

The easiest method would be the use of a larkin-a type of cremling that feasts on Stormlight. That would be wonderful and convenient if the creatures weren’t now almost extinct. The wars in Aimia were a part over these seemingly innocent little creatures.

To draw Stormlight out of a gemstone, I use the Arnist Method. Several large empty gemstones are brought close to the infused one while the spren is inspecting it. Stormlight is slowly absorbed from a small gemstone by a very large gemstone of the same type - and several together can draw the Light out quickly. The method’s limitations is, of course, the fact that you need not merely acquire one gemstone for your fabrial, but several larger ones to withdraw the Stormlight.

Other methods must exist, as proven by the extremely large gemstone fabrials created by the Vriztl Guild out of Thaylenah. If Her Majesty would please repeat my request to the guild, this secret is of vital importance to the war effort.

If the Stormlight in a gemstone is withdrawn quickly enough, a nearby spren can be sucked into the gemstone. This is caused by a similar effect to a pressure differential, created by the sudden withdrawal

Burning Down The House

Emilia stood outside the Storage hatch with a flamethrower.

Well she called it a flamethrower, but over the helmet camera Jamet thought it looked more like a plasma welder taped to a pressurized aerosol bottle. Every now and then the camera would turn sideways and upward, focusing on the clearly worried expression of Paul, then face forward again. "Uhh, how long are we going to wait here?" Emilia managed to sound worried and irritated in equal amounts.

"I second that, lieutenant." Paul sounded just as nervous, although his tone made it harder to tell. She had his camera input on the left side of the screen away from Emilia's to avoid accidentally giving herself nausea. Every now and then the taller man's feed would turn downward to check on Emilia's tiny suited form, then check the heavy pry bar in his gloved hands. "The longer I stand here the less I like the idea."

Jamet tapped a console key. "I get it, sorry. But I don't think it'll be much longer. Janson, can you hear us? What's your status?"

The big man's baritone voice sounded smaller over an audio link. "Captain's authorizing the systems right now, ah can cut local gravity after that. You sure this will work?"

"Will it put our friends in storage to sleep? Actually, no. I'm not sure."

"Ma'am?"

"Engineer?"

"That would have been a great time to lie to me. Jus' saying." Something clicked over the line, then beeped. "That's got it. Everyone ready? Gravity cutting off in five, four..."

She checked the redundant buckles on her workstation, then gripped the edge of the console as the engineer finished his countdown. Right after 'one' it suddenly felt like the entire ship took a nosedive off a cliff, tossing her heart and stomach straight upwards in a horrible feeling of falling. Jamet closed both eyes and took deep breaths, focusing hard on squashing her body's automatic panic reflex. At least she wasn't alone:

The proliferation of financial derivatives and gender options: contemporary life is dominated by real abstractions

One can argue that even though gender was always implicit in all past societies in which the sexual division of labor played a key role in the organization of that society, it wouldn't be until the development of the capitalist mode of production that gender takes on a regulatory function of all social relationships between people. And then it wouldn't be until the ascendant financialization of the global economy that gender could become meaningfully considered for the first time as being independent of sex.

Though seemingly unrelated on the surface, the proliferation of financial derivatives and the multiplication of gender options both point to the same thing from different directions: that increasingly, life is dominated by abstractions that no longer refer back to their material grounds of origination and instead present themselves as self-sufficient totalities intrinsically endowed with meaning (or worth) of their own. The irony of it all, however, is that these abstractions are nonetheless "real abstractions" in the sense that they cannot be constituted by anything other than concrete relationships between people, and that for the same reason these abstractions produce real effects on these very relationships.

So the only way to heed the call for the abolition of gender (as well as the abolition of value), is to change the concrete conditions upon which they rest, such that there is no longer the possibility of giving rise to them in the future, so that the possibility of a life free of the rule of abstractions becomes finally available.

Part of this process consists of understanding that the "sex" of specific individuals and the "utility" of goods and services (which are the underlying bases of gender and value, respectively) are not pre-established givens but are always products of interpretation which are relative to the interests of the interpreter. The duality of sex and gender, and utility and value, itself obscures the nature of sex and utility when considered independently of gender and value, and renders them as absolute or fixed in some sense. But when truly considered independently of them, sex and utility are relative concepts that are conditioned by and inseparable from the very way in which they are approached in the first place: different ways of looking, guided by different motivating interests, produces different ways of seeing the same thing. This does not mean that the same thing is equally all of those different perspectives, n

Ikeda: "Every disease can be cured by Gohonzon!"

As you can imagine, Toda's untimely demise, and from the consequences of his attachment to alcohol, after having praised attachments earlier, was - and remains - quite an embarrassment within the SGI. Some try to claim it was lingering effects from his incarceration, but fellow Soka Kyoiku Gakkai member and Makiguchi shakubuku Shuhei Yajima spent exactly the same amount of time in the same prison under the same charges, and he lived to the ripe old age of 75.

Yet the "The Human Revolution" novels acknowledge that Toda had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver (typically brought on by an excessive, intemperate drinking habit), so let's start there - in May, 1957:

>From that time on [the start of the trials for the Osaka Incident], Toda frequently spoke about his own death. Such comments, however, were always cloaked in humor. It was often difficult to tell whether he was being serious or joking. For example, Toda once told his housekeeper:

>"I think I'll leave this world in April next year, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom."

Bullshit. #ThatHappened

>On another occasion, he said to some of the leaders closest to him:

>"You have all grown splendidly. I will be leaving you soon. If you have anything you want to ask me - anything at all - you'd better ask now. Don't blame me if you don't and regret it later. Ha! Ha!..."

What a weirdo.

>Toda's laugh was bright. His kind eyes smiled warmly. Because his words were so sudden, none of the leaders knew how to respond. One women's division leader,

...who will never be identified because the ghostwriters made her up for this scene...

>her eyes moist with tears,

...because of course...buncha crybabies...

>said, "Sensei, you have a mission. You cannot die yet!"

The Watchtower and "Should you believe in the Trinity" brochure?

When next the Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) come to your door or mail you a letter, ask them who Jesus really is and you just might receive an old brochure entitled Should You Believe in the Trinity? At first look the brochure seems well researched. It is when one begins to look more closely at it that it becomes obvious that the Watchtower is misleading its own followers and readers (and you if they had their way). In some places, the misleading appears intentional. In others, it is unclear whether deception is involved or scholarship is lacking. This forum is a place to critique the tract fully, since the topic of what the early Church Fathers said about Jesus has now been raised, this is an appropriate time to answer what the brochure states about JW beliefs.

Ignatius and Polycarp

Two of the earliest Church Fathers, Polycarp and Ignatius taught the deity of Christ. The early Church father, Irenaeus (circa AD 120–190) wrote that Polycarp was "instructed" and "appointed" by the apostles, and "conversed with many who had seen Christ...having always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles." Irenaeus also wrote that he clearly remembered "the accounts which [Polycarp] gave of his intercourse with John and with the others who had seen the Lord. And as he remembered their words, and what he heard from them concerning the Lord, and concerning his miracles and his teaching, having received them from eyewitnesses of the ‘Word of life’." So his view of Jesus is very important. In The Letter of Polycarp to the Philippians, he mentions "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" and "our Lord and God Jesus Christ."

Now may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal High Priest himself, the Son of God Jesus Christ, build you up in faith and truth and in all gentleness and in all freedom from anger and forbearance and steadfastness and patient endurance and purity, and may he give to you a share and a place among his saints, and to us with you, and to all those under heaven who will yet believe in our Lord and God Jesus Christ and in his Father who raised him from the dead.

Thus, Polycarp agrees with the teachings of the apostles that Jesus is God.

Ignatius was the Bishop of Antioch at the same time Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna. He wrote seven letters to the Churches while en route to his execution in Rome around the year AD 110. In Ignatius’ Letter to the Ephesians 18:2 he states:

For our God, Jesus the Christ, was conceive

I made a pretty comprehensive voting guide.

It's full of curse words to make it more palatable.

Google Doc Here

President Endorsement: Joe Biden As a nation, we cannot continue to plummet into a fascist regime. The most change happens locally, and so please pay attention to the less sexy details.

US Senate Louisiana Endorsement: Adrian Perkins Close your eyes and imagine a world where Mitch McConnell is not our majority leader. Feels good, right? Well, it is gonna be an uphill battle that starts with Adrian Perkins. To win this election over incumbent, Bill Cassidy, would be a multifaceted victory. Cassidy vehemently opposes climate change, medicare for all, abortion access, mail in ballots and continuing unemployment stimulus amidst Covid-19. Perkins has the exact opposite platforms. Perhaps, most importantly, he wants to overturn Citizens United. Holy shit. Now a girl can really dream. And finally, fun fact- if Perkins wins, he would be the first black senator to represent Louisiana since 1887.

US House Louisiana District 2 Endorsement: Colby James Oh, what a gerrymandering mess the second congressional district is. The Republicans that drew out this district really wanted to pack all the minorities together essentially guaranteeing there is only one Democratic seat up for grabs in the House of Representatives. Since all this gerrymandering has pretty much ensured the incumbent and Democratic darling Cedric Richmond the election, I feel comfortable indulging the third party voter locked deep in my heart for this election -not a game I’m willing to play with the rest of the ballot. We all know that Democrats and Republicans are two wings of the same bird that only serve the interest of the rich. That is why Colby James has caught my eye. James understands that you cannot truly fight corruption in government. He instead has a plan to work around the corruption to actually serve the people. The plan includes implementing new social aid programs, changing the federal tax code, and instituting a racial wealth divide audit. There I go dreaming again.

Associate Justice Supreme Court 7th District Endorsement: Sandra Cabrina Jenkins Whoever wins this election will be the only black female to sit at the Supreme Court bench amongst the six white men. While there are three very capable candidates to fill the seat of the esteemed Chief Justice Johnson, Sandra Cabrina Jenkins is my favorit

Theological Study on Evolution by Peter Ruckman

Evolution   This lesson deals with the dubious subject of evolution. We go into this because evolution is the main lie taught in the public school system to overthrow the Genesis account and the truth of the word of God. Evolution is not only taught as a possible theory, but it is taught as a fact in nearly every state university in America. Maynard Shipley, head of the Science League of America, says, “Scientists the world over accept the general theory of evolution as valid and incontrovertible and regard the process of evolution as a FACT. “

Linville, Kelly, and Cleave in their textbook, General Zoology, write, “All scientists at the present time agree that evolution is a FACT.” Now, of course that is a lie. For example, Dr. Arthur L. Brown, a noted scientist and chemist, said, “Evolution as a theory has utterly collapsed from the weight of its own inherent absurdities and impossibilities.” So, we have two divisions of scientists today in opposite camps. One group thinks that evolution is absurd, impossible, and nonsense. The other bunch think it is a fact. A rather wide gap. Somebody must be fooling himself pretty badly.

Of course, evolution is the religion of the Communists. Every Communist and Socialist has a religion. Their religion is evolution. THEY BELIEVE IN MAN. They believe in man’s ability to overcome man so that man may arrive at where man is. That is, to them man is God. Every Communist has a religion, namely evolution, and he has doctrinal convictions about this fantastic hallucination as much as any Trappist monk has about a Hail Mary or an Our Father. And when it comes to sacred cows, don’t think the Catholics have a monopoly on all of them or that the Baptists have a monopoly on all of them. The sacred cows of American education could fill the pastures of Wyoming. To them, such things as “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny,” vestigial organs, embryonic recapitulation, the making of clones, computerized mathematics, and artificial insemination are gods.

Evolution is given a concise definition by Herbert Spencer, a great deluded sinner, who said, “Evolution is always fundamentally an integration of matter and dissipation of motion.” He also said, “Evolution is an integration of matter and concomitant dissipation of motion, during which the matter passes from an indefinite, incoherent homogeny to a definite, coherent heterogeneity, and during which the retained motion undergoes a parallel transformation.”

Mr. Spencer simply meant that
