Hey y’all, first time poster, long time lurker. 1970 T2 with plenty of wear and not much done to it- though the engine has been rebuilt in the last 5 years. Engine seems in good shape though there’s an oil leak- which means it’s a Volkswagen, right? Haha
This bus has been a daunting task that's been sitting in my driveway since January after having it delivered from Portland to the central coast of California. That may make it sound like I’ve got a problem with too much money lying around so I decided to burn some by getting a bus. As a barista I can assure you that is not the case… though I do concede that I am in over my head. Right where I’m supposed to be, though, I reckon.
Anyhow, I drove the bus a few weeks back and made it about two miles before I noticed I had quite the cloud of light, bluish smoke trailing behind me- along with a steady line of tourists. I made it back home and have been, uhh, hesitant to get into things ever since. Lots of oil drops on the entire rear-end of the bus when I got home.
So, to get the ball rolling, I ran a compression test this evening and am looking for feedback. The results are as follows:
- Cylinder 1- 125lbs
- Cylinder 2- 125lbs
- Cylinder 3- 110lbs
- Cylinder 4- 140lbs
I’ve got a copy of ‘How to keep your Volkswagen alive’ and am following that for this test. Muir, the author, mentioned that if one cylinder is at a lower pressure you should put a little oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole and run the test again. So, I did that on cylinder 3 as well as cylinder 4. The second test on each cylinder:
- Cylinder 3- 120lbs
- Cylinder 4- 140lbs
Additionally, the spark plug connector wire for Cylinder 3 needs to be replaced. The connector doesn’t grab the plug, just rests on it. (Pictures attached of broken connector wire compared to a good connector wire)
I’m wondering- cylinder 3 may be the culprit for an oil leak. The rings may be badly worn on this cylinder- according to Muir. There is a lot of buildup on the other plugs, though, too. I should mention, when I fill the oil and drive around the block, a lot of oil will leak out over the next few hours. Is this coming from the possible leak in cylinder 3 and an additional leak somewhere else?
- What should I do about the busted connector wire? I'll replace all the connector wires, but will that give me any new information?
- What must be done to fix the rings in cylinder 3?
- What is going on with the excess pressure in Cylinder 4?
