Why do most engines use 4 cylinders?
If you look at all gas and diesel engines worldwide used on passenger cars, chances are it's using a 4 cylinder engine. This is probably also true for US cars for the past decade.
Is 4 cylinder some kind of sweet spot between engine smoothness, performance and efficiency? Is there a scientific reason for this?

Am I an idiot for wanting to change a heating element in my hot water cylinder?
I have done my research and it looks like the top element is dead. I only have lukewarm showers now. Apparently it is not impossible to repair this yourself.
We have recently bought a house and the inspection told us the cylinder would need replacing eventually anyway. You can see the rust on the bottom.
However 400-600 for a new heating element is much more palatable than 2000++ for a new cylinder, considering we have just bought the house.
Is this a common home repair job? Can I learn how to do this from online tutorials? I have a basic knowledge of circuits so I don't think I would electrocute myself and I have access to multimeters etc.

Easiest vehicle to pull the cylinder heads?
I'm currently helping my brother in law pull the heads and replace his head gaskets on his car (2004 Toyota 4Runner 4.0 and 202k miles) and we have been discussing what vehicle would be the easiest to do this job on. Clearly a DOHC engine with two cylinder banks and a timing chain has not been a cake walk but it is going well so far (just a slow job). My proposal was an OHV inline truck engine (Cummins B series) and his was a small block Chevy. Anyone else have any suggestions?
Side note: If you are buying an early 4th gen 4Runner, spend a little extra and get one with a V8. Mine has 223k and has been absolutely bulletproof. Just change the timing belt every 90k and basic maintenance otherwise.

Aftermarket muffler for 4 cylinder, 1.4L, 100bhp Auris
I've a 4 cylinder, 1.4L Toyota Auris 2009 (not sure what the American equivalent is) around 100bhp I've been messing about with it and I was thinking of installing an aftermarket muffler to give it a nicer sound, not really too worried about improving performance but I would like a deeper sound but nothing crazy loud or raspy. Just wondering if anyone has done this with a similar size engine and if so what did you use? Or any advice on choosing a muffler with a nice sound for an engine of this size would be a great help.
The engraving is of the naval battle of Campeche. Apparently Sam Colt put it on the cylinders of some or all origional 1851 navy guns. This is a pietta replica. The pictures I saw online of other pietta replica that are exactly the same as mine in every other way dont have this. Is mine special?
