Yesterday I found out that coriander is the same thing as cilantro. I'm so embarrassed, and my mind is blown.

I moved to the UK from the US a year and a half ago and was very sad about the fact that I could never find cilantro in supermarkets. Yesterday, I complained to a friend... and I learned. I'm still in shock over this revelation, and I'm ashamed that I never stopped to try this mysterious coriander herb I kept seeing.

Help me feel better - what other embarrassing food name mistakes/mix-ups have you made?

Edit: I didn't expect this to get so much attention. Living in the US I didn't know that coriander as in seeds were even a thing, so just learned thanks to you guys too! Now... time for me to finally be able to make guac again!

TIFU by not knowing how coriander tastes like

This is my TIFU from some years ago, but it still haunts me to this day. There is this plant that tastes particular. And particularly, to a group of people it tastes horribly like dish soap and it even makes them gag. I had the pleasure to make acquaintance with fresh coriander for the first time some 10 years ago. When I had my first pho. I went to this restaurant with my SO at that time and went straight for a nice beefy pho, garnished with all the goodies. What I didn’t know was how fresh coriander/cilantro tastes like. I had the seeds in curry and dried herb as spice here and there in other dishes. While I was enjoying the delicious beef and soup, I was being hit with this soapy taste every now and then. And I couldn’t understand for the life of me where it came from. When it hit me: it tastes like dish soap, it has to be dish soap. So I tell my SO, and they don’t have the same experience. In my mind, that’s it: those assholes don’t know how to wash a freaking bowl. God damnit. So I try to eat as much as I can of the meat and then decide that’s that. I take the rest of the soup to their counter, give it back to the cashier and tell her that it tasted like a horrible dish soap soup and they should pay attention to how they clean their bowls. She looked and me baffled, to her colleague, and I just leave with a quick β€œthank you and good day”.

Only to find out a few hours later that coriander tastes horribly for some people that have a mutation in OR6A2 gene which encodes a receptor that is highly sensitive to aldehyde chemicals, the stuff that contribute to the flavor of coriander.

Since then I feel so bad for giving them back the soup and shaming them for not cleaning the dishes properly when it was actually my gene that’s broken and makes me gag whenever I smell/eat that devil’s weed. I was never able to apologize to that lady because I haven’t gone back to that town since then.

I still hate coriander.

TL;DR I am one of those people for which cilantro/coriander tastes like dish soap and I told a lady from the restaurant where I had pho that they should clean their bowls properly.

Coriander - love it or hate it?

TL;DR at bottom

I despise coriander. It is literally the one herb, one food item, one thing that I have tried so far in my life that I will refuse to eat. I’m not kidding.

I’ve found it’s used here a lot, almost every take away that isn’t fish and chips seems to have dishes with it in, but it’s almost we don’t know how to use it sparingly.

I never used to mind it, when used very very sparingly. Then I worked I’m a petrol station in north shore and my coworkers would always bring loads of food to share for every shift. It was lovely and so kind of them. They used coriander like goddamn lettuce.

I didn’t eat many dishes with coriander for a while after I left there, just never went places that would use it. Occasionally I’d get a hit of it from a meal and think, β€œthis absolutely fucked this meal”.

It’s been a long time, I’d even forgotten about it’s existence. Tonight my wonderful wife brought home Thai food, and I can’t get enough of the heat of good chilli with food. I’m growing my own at the moment so I can save money. Anyway, i grab a lovely, beautiful looking piece of beef with chilli on it and scoop up some rice and obviously some of the green stuff too. Cram it in and prepare for the flavour explosion in my mouth. What I got was entirely different. I finished chewing and deadpan looked at my wife and said, β€œthis has coriander”.

Now in all fairness I haven’t mentioned it in a few years as I haven’t needed to, so it’s not her fault my meal was a mess and not even the dog deserves that.

I ate as much of the meat and rice as I could while occasionally getting a sharp, unidentifiably horrific snack in the taste buds.

I understand some people love it and if that’s you, by all means go nuts. I’ll stick to my bhut, habanero etc, and you can keep the coriander.

TL;DR fuck coriander

Ground Coriander on green veggies.

I have been trying to eat healthier a bit, and have found a vegetable loophole.

Zucchini, Broccoli, Asparagus, Green Beans, anything in the dark green vegetable family I have been adding ground coriander, salt, pepper, and that coriander flavor pops every time.

To be clear, I do not like cilantro very much at all, so I never really tried coriander as a spice thinking it would taste like cilantro.

Last night pan cooked asparagus, with Brussel sprouts, ground coriander, then cut up a turkey kielbasa and added it in, finished with a handful of baby spinach.

This spice is a vegetable game changer for me.
