[D] Looking for Papers on the "Compute Gap" in Deep Learning research

So, in recent years deep learning has become more and more resource intense (not that it was abacus-level computational effort to begin with), which has resulted in some kind of "compute gap" seperating researches with the necessary Google-TPU-Clusters-Ooomph and the rest who does not.

Specially in Deep Learning I think this is problematic, since Google, Amazon and Co. are also privat companies and under no obligation to actually publish their research.I was wondering weather there are paper discussing this topic?

I am currently struggeling to find papers, despite my best efforts. My motivation here is to have some good sources to point at when I get into a discussion on that topic. Do you guys happen to know some citable publications on this?

I don’t compute when people use buzzwords (adjectives, mainly) and don’t explain what they mean. Am I supposed to intuit that?

For example, if someone calls someone ambitious, I want to understand what they think ambition is. Is ambition climbing up the corporate ladder or Kilimanjaro? Is it both? Is it neither?

Or you say someone is β€œlazy” - what does that mean? Maybe you think β€œlazy” is someone who doesn’t want to work and just wants to have fun doing sports. Or maybe you think someone who does a desk job is lazy because they don’t do sport. How am I supposed to know?

Because, unless I know how you interpret certain words, you could mean anything by it. And that makes me sleepy.

Everything is relative. So if you are trying to communicate something specific, please don’t ask me to intuit what you mean. Just use your words.

Who computes PoW for mobile wallet users ?

I read somewhere that the PoW necessary to produce a new block for mobile users is actually computed by someone else, when using most wallets at least.

If so, is there a way for me to know who is doing the PoW ? I imagine it’s programmed in the wallet so no way for me to switch that right ?

And do they produce PoW as service for their users ? Do they have an incentive to do so ?

If spam attack continue, and PoW difficulty augment, is it possible for the ones doing the PoW for me to be outclassed and stop providing that service as they are not capable/willing to produce the work to process my transactions ? I would be left needing to run PoW myself on my crappy phone, unable to produce PoW faster than once an hour or something.

I am assuming the attacker is able to compute enough PoW and climb the dynamic PoW scale without sweating much.

So, as the title suggests, is RDNA1 better at compute than RDNA2? Reason I am asking this is because RDNA1 had left over 'parts' from GCN, while RDNA2 (supposedly) completely eliminated them from the architecture. Obviously RDNA2 has RTRT cores and things like that, but when it comes to mining, why is there a small difference in compute power between RDNA1 and 2? Thanks.

Looking for some tips about Compute Shaders

Hi,

I'm trying to learn about shaders and multiple times I heard about how practical and efficient compute shaders can be. I'd like to use them in combination with Processing (maybe also C++ in future), but for this topic I only find tutorials done in Unity, and from my understanding things can vary quite a bit between these enviroments. Do you have any hint/material I could look for to study them?

Tell me if you need more information about what I'm looking for, and thanks in advance.

AMD GPU - can I game and compute on the same system?

Understanding all the different AMD drivers, how they connect, what features they support, etc. is a damn mess so I just stick with Mesa which I'm told is the right move for gaming

But, Mesa does not have compute support for things like Blender, Etherium mining, etc.

From what I understand this requires installing the AMD Pro drivers? But then that means you can't game, or not very well. Do I really have to switch drivers and reboot every time I switch use cases? If so this incredibly lacking compared to Windows, and I hope AMD gets their shit together. Any advice on using both at the same time?

I'm using the google cloud platform with an active account for payment but with some remaining money from the 3 month free trial.

Every time I ask for an increase for my compute engine quotas, more specifically for more CPU, VM instance and IP address, I get automatically denied.

I suppose it's because I have still some free trial money and that the increase quota or support isn't available for free trial account. But my account is activated for payment.... My credit cards informations are correct.

What can I do to reach the support ? I sent a mail at [email protected].

Best way to learn compute shaders

I want to learn to work with compute shaders. I was wondering what the best way to do so is:

  • Through Vulkan (lowest level)
  • Through OpenGL (higher level, requires graphics context, but I think the gist is the same as in Vulkan since I can also use GLSL?)
  • Through a game engine like Unity

Are the concepts the same in all three? Which would you recommend?

My friends and I made an open source, whole house audio system based on the Raspberry Pi CM3+ compute module!

My friends and I put together a Raspberry Pi-based whole house audio amplifier called AmpliPi. It can stream four independent sources to 6 stereo output zones (expandable to up to 36 stereo output zones). It comes in a 2U rackmount unit, and is designed for homes with wired speakers.

We've decided to open source the software, firmware, and even the schematics (under the GPL license) and post them to our GitHub repository. For controlling the box, we have a self-hosted mobile-first web interface and a well-documented REST API. The hardware is all assembled in the United States at our in-house electronics factory in Metro Detroit!

https://preview.redd.it/lz19u58e6uh61.jpg?width=4067&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5249442b8203ba4a2bd8f276551c2d86645649c

The system is based on the Raspberry Pi CM3+ compute module. We have two DACs on the Raspberry Pi (TI PCM5102A via I2S, and CM6206 via USB) for a total of 4x simultaneous stereo audio streams, each of which can go to one or many of the 6 output zones (up to 36 zones with expansion boxes, which each add 6 additional zones). See diagram below and check out our schematics.

https://preview.redd.it/m6cj1acg6uh61.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=1887d5cb4cf7ecc0a6e23d3a3517427c7f038e55

Here is a look inside one of our prototype units:

https://preview.redd.it/nm2afw8i6uh61.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30bb1398c5dc221912c7a8001196c7c56e329914

We designed AmpliPi for fellow makers and DIY-ers who are dissatisfied with the existing landscape of overpriced, closed-source products, plagued by issues like forced obsolescence and questionable privacy practices.

We have a Kickstarter going for the hardware with developer units shipping in April, and general release planned for June. We would love to get feedback from you all! Your feedback will help influence the final design, and decide what features to prioritize for the first release. You can also follow us on GitHub, where you can contribute to the codebase, and discuss issues / new feature requests.

IMPORTANT - Help Fight Miners with your spare compute

So I know mining is frowned upon here, but recent events have made sure that gamers have the perfect opportunity to strike back and stick it to the miners.

Let me explain -EIP 1559 Aims to reduce transaction fees on the ETH network by setting a base fee and burning part of the fee. This naturally hurts miners and they are throwing a massive tantrum, attempting to 51% attack the network and stop the rollout of EIP 1559 as seen here in this tweet

So help make them suffer for stealing all your GPUs and ensuring this change goes through, if enough people join this we will also increase the difficulty to mine ETH further hurting there profits.

So in Short - EIP 1559 hurts miner revenue, they are attempting a 51% attack to prevent this change

How Can I help?

To stop a 51% attack you have to prevent them from reaching 51%, which is only done by expanding the network. Right now the only major pool to support EIP 1559 is f2pool, so you need to lend them your compute to mine, you will get a payment if you setup a wallet too for you fighting.

First you need a pickaxe, of which I recommend lolminer because its open source, we know the dev, and its the most trusted. A github download can be found here.Download the miner, you may need to make a firewall exception which is normal for miners as they are very suspicious is immediately deciding to use 100% of your GPU, but lolminer is safe.

Once downloaded, extract it and find "mine_eth.bat" and edit it. (Same thing with mine_ether4G if your GPU only has 4GB of VRAM)

Depending on where you reside, place one of the following addresses below equal to POOL, so it should look like "POOL=thing.frombelow"

China

stratum+tcp://eth.f2pool.com:6688

North America

stratum+tcp://eth-na.f2pool.com:6688

Europe

stratum+tcp://eth-eu.f2pool.com:6688

Then set "WALLET=" your own wallet which you can make here or just use mine ;) of "0x7ab7b6af6bdd06A6D90df7007E3a82dbE169f1b7" then add a ".workername" of which workername can be whatever you want

Once you're done, save the batch file and you're now ready.
