Discussion Thread: Joint Session of Congress for Counting of Electoral College Ballots Continues | 01/06/2021 | Live - 8:00pm ET | Part III

"Today, Vice President Mike Pence will preside over a Joint Session of both chambers of Congress, which will tally and certify the electors for Joe Biden, finalizing his win in the 2020 Election.

##What will happen:

Senate and House of Representatives resumed at 8:00 p.m. in a joint session at the Capitol, in the House chamber, to count the electoral votes and declare the results (3 U.S.C. Β§15). The Vice President presides as President of the Senate. The Vice President opens the certificates and presents them to four tellers, two from each chamber. The tellers read and make a list of the returns. When the votes have been ascertained and counted, the tellers transmit them to the Vice President. If one of the tickets has received a majority of 270 or more electoral votes, the Vice President announces the results, which "shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons, if any, elected President and Vice President."

While the tellers announce the results, Members may object to the returns from any individual state as they are announced. Objections to individual state returns must be made in writing by at least one Member each of the Senate and House of Representatives. If an objection meets these requirements, the joint session recesses and the two houses separate and debate the question in their respective chambers for a maximum of two hours. The two houses then vote separately to accept or reject the objection. They then reassemble in joint session, and announce the results of their respective votes. An objection to a state’s electoral vote must be approved by both houses in order for any contested votes to be excluded.

If every single American teen suddenly "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps" and got a high school and college degree, wouldn't we still have poor people because we will always need blue collar workers like janitors, cashiers and high paying jobs are limited?

My point is, do we overemphasize the ability of individuals to make it to the top if they just try hard enough, within our current system? Is the system rigged, in a sense, so that trying and dedication aren't actually enough?

AITA For withdrawing college support from my step-daughter?

My wife and I have been together for nine years. I have two biological children and one step child. My oldest is 24 and out on his own working on his masters, while my second is 20 and enjoying her college days several states away. My step daughter is 19 and attending another school a few hours away too.

Before i agreed to pay for any of the kids education I was very upfront with everyone that there were conditions that were to be met/followed or payments would stop. There were no negotiations to be made and if that were a problem they could take out loans.

The rules were/are: No drugs or drinking. No smoking. No getting pregnant or getting anyone pregnant. Register to vote and vote (I don’t care who for) No legal problems Maintain 2.5 or better

All three of the kids agreed to these rules, and I have handle all of their expenses. My first graduated with no issue, and my daughter hasn’t caused any hiccups either however the rules have seem to be to much for stepdaughter.

My wife sat me down earlier last week and told me SD had been caught with alcohol in her room and she was placed on academic probation at last semesters end for a low GPA. She had known for awhile but kept it from me. I told her that it was fine, but no more. The support from me was done. My wife wanted to argue with me and claimed I was playing favorites however I argued back because my children hadn’t broken any rules so there was no double standard or favoritism going on.

Our tense house hold became tenser this past weekend when my daughter called me to let me know SD had called her asking for a small loan. The loan was for an abortion. I confronted my wife about it and asked if she felt this was also a secret and if it was also me playing favorites. She knew about it as well and was pretty speechless about it.

I don’t know where this all went wrong. She never acted like this at home, but I know it’s a lot of freedom to have when you’re young. My wife doesn’t want to send her the money because she’s against abortion but I don’t want a baby in the house. I’m to old for that now. Not sure how to solve that pickle.

AITA here?

Edit* I can see this being asked a lot. My wife and I have a prenup in place. The house is mine, and we don’t do-mingle finances.

CMV: The white teen who said the n word on a Snapchat video in freshman year should not have been dropped from the admission list of her college when a black student released the video 4 years later

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/26/us/mimi-groves-jimmy-galligan-racial-slurs.amp.html

Here is an article explaining the situation ^

Important edit: Mr. Galligon received this video in his senior year of high school, so he waited a few months until he discovered she was admited to college, and then released it. HE DID NOT WAIT 4 YEARS! I’m so sorry for misinterpreting this part of the story.

Reasoning:

  1. The girl said it when she was 15 (4 years ago)

-Mrs. Groves said this word as a child. Was it right? Absolutely not. But 4 years is enough to change anyone, and old statements should not be held against someone if they have shown change, especially when these were made as a kid.

  1. She said this in a private message, not directed to any black person

-This of course does not make what she said better, but it makes the context better. She said β€œn words I can drive.” This was not said with any (intentional) hate, and was sent to a (presumably) white friend. This use of the n word is much better than say, a white person calling a black person the n word out of hatred.

  1. She did not send this video to Mr. Galligan, or any black person

-This video was sent to Mr. Galligan by a friend, not Mrs. Groves herself. Mrs. Groves did not try to target Mr. Galligan with this slur, he merely saw her say it. Still a disgusting act, but it’s not like she was trying to be directly racist to Mr. Galligan.

  1. She was raised in a racist environment

-In the article, it says that Mr Galligan reported the video to an administrator, and they did nothing. This shows that her environment did not oppose or take racism seriously. By not punishing racist actions of hers or the actions of her peers they are rewarding and validating it. This still does not justify her use of the slur, but it explains why she felt entitled to use it.

  1. She had made an effort to change

-Mrs. Galligan promoted blm, BEFORE the video was leaked. Yes, it was around the time it was β€œtrendy” but it’s not like this was a last ditch effort to clear her name. While it might have just been performance activism, even promoting blm shows that she was attempting to change her ways.

  1. Mr. Galligan’s actions were sickening

-Mr. Galligan has experienced much worse racism in school (white students directly mocking him with racial slurs), yet chose an instance of racism that was not directed towards him to expose. He clearly did not want to see real change, otherwise he would have posted stories

TIFU by taking free condoms from my college

I'm no longer a college student but when I was attending college they had a event to bring awareness to STDs and AIDS. My professor at the time was offering extra credit if we went, so I decided to go. I mainly just walked around, looking at all the different setups. Then I reach a table that's giving out free condoms. If it's free sign me up, and I took a handful and shoved them in my bookbag. After that I just carried those condoms in my bookbag for the remainder of my college year. Never took them out, I'm not sure why lol, laziness maybe but that is where they remained. Fast forward 2 years later. I get home I see my husband and at that time bf sitting at the table looking very distraught. I ask him what's wrong, he proceeds to empty his pockets and dumps the condoms I had gotten 2 years ago! With a stern look he asks can you explain why these were in your bookbag? We haven't used condoms since 2013. I can't help myself I start cracking up, as I realize what's happening. At first he didn't seem amused that I was laughing, but eventually he did let out a chuckle. I go on to explain, and we both end up having a good laugh about it. I ask how he found them out of curiosity. He says I didn't find them the cat did. I then died.

TL; DR: I took some free condoms from my college. That my husband found 2 years later. I had some explaining to do since we haven't used condoms since 2013.

AITA for wanting to go to college even though my siblings need me?

UPDATE: Hey. I wasn’t sure where to post an update and wasn’t even sure if I wanted to, but you deserve one. First off, thank you all so much for your kind words, resources, offers of help, etc. I’m still sifting through much of it and trying to reply where I can. Now, for the actual update portion. I am NOT going into intricate details about this so please do not send messages asking for more info. A close friend recognized the story and brought to the attention of a guidance counselor at our school, who confronted me about it. I denied it as I didn’t want anyone to find out it was me(I was mostly jsut embarrassed.) My friend called CPS after that. I was pissed, and didn’t talk to her for a few days. CPS came but I’m not going into details. My siblings and I will be separated a bit. I’m still pretty broken up about this as I really don’t want to be separated from them but I know it’s likely the best. Thank you all again for the massive support I received. Sorry if this sounds sloppy or lazy but I’m still processing a lot of emotions right now.

Hey, I’ll get straight to it. I(17f) am the oldest of 9(15m, 13m, 13f, 12m, 10f, 7m, 5f, 2m) My mother is a single mother who works hard to supply for us but relies mostly off child support(as my most of my siblings and I have different fathers). Though I’m only a half sister to most of my siblings, I still love them all very much and try my very best treat them as equal.

I got a job at 14 to help make extra cash and my days normally consist of getting up early to help get all the kiddos to school(or getting online for virtual school) and then going to my classes of the day(I’m a junior in high school) before going to work right when school ends and getting home a little before midnight. During the day while I’m in class, I’m still watching my 2 year old brother and making sure all the other kids are still in class/paying attention. My mom works at a small restaurant nearby from around 7am-3pm, but when she’s home mostly just sleeps because she’s tired from her long shifts.

Now for the actual AITA. Recently I’ve been looking at and getting ready to apply to colleges but haven’t told my mother. She went through my laptop the other day and found out what I was looking up financial aid and looking at some state schools a bit farther away(600-700 miles) and got really upset. She started crying saying she couldn’t afford to send me to school and that she couldn’t continue to care for my siblings without me. I felt

AITA for gambling half of my kids' college funds (and winning)?

Okay, I know that the title sounds horrible, but hear me out.

About a week ago, a group of friends and I took a trip to Vegas. (And for the record, we all got COVID tested before we went out. I'm looking for a judgement on this specific thing, not on me taking a vacation.) The casinos have just opened up recently, and my friends and I have always enjoyed a little bit of gambling, so we decided to check one out.

I usually have a specific fund dedicated to gambling so I don't use up any of our savings, but most of that fund ended up being put towards rent during quarantine, since my GF got laid off of work.

Now, here's where I think I might be the asshole. It had been over a year since I had gambled last, and I really wanted to gamble. Any other gamblers out there reading this post will get it. I didn't want to take away from the house fund or from our grocery fund, so I decided that taking money from my kids' college funds would be the best option. One of them is 14 and the other is 11, so there was still plenty of time for me to get the money back before they actually go off to college.

And I ended up winning! I kept all of the money that I gambled, and I ended up making a profit of about a quarter of the fund. I called my GF and excitedly told her the news, but she asked where I had gotten the original money from. I told her, and she freaked. Out. She screamed at me, told me that she was going to tell the kids how immature I was, and hung up on me.

I know that it was a little bit irresponsible, but I don't really see the issue. If I had lost the money, it might be a different story, but I won, so I don't get why there's a problem. Now my kids have even more money to put into their college fund, and I got to gamble like I wanted to.

It's been three days since that conversation, and she hasn't responded to any of my calls. I'm getting really sick of reaching out to her when I don't think I did anything wrong, but my flight home is soon, and I don't want her to bitch about me not apologizing when I get home. But do I even have anything to apologize for?

So, reddit: AITA?

Edit: I don't think you guys get it. I only gambled about 30k, and now me and my family are all better off because of it. Don't you guys understand that I won? I accept my judgement, but I disagree.

Aita for letting my daughter use my sons car when he was away at college, and not telling him when she damaged it?

This has caused a lot of stir in our household, and I’m finally deciding to post on this sub (long time reader)!

My son is 20 and a sophomore in college. He currently lives there in an apartment, but does not have his car there. He has left his car at home but is adamant that nobody use it. In October, my daughter turned 16. She went and got her drivers license a few weeks after. She passed the test with no problems, though I’ll admit she struggled at times when she drove with me. Her best friend lives in the same subdivision as us, a 4 minute drive half a mile away. There’s no traffic or stoplights involved when driving to her friend’s house.

Well, she really wanted to drive herself there the day she got her license. I had some errands to run so.... I let her take my sons car. And well... I watched her pull out of our driveway, and completely clip the side of the car against our brick mailbox. The right front headlight was smashed and the bumper had a pretty a dent and scrapes.

My son has a pretty bad temper, and I was terrified about how he’d react. Daughter is very quiet and sensitive, and I know my son would probably dish out enough insults to her to put her in therapy. Not knowing what to do, I called my mom to see if she’d pay to get it fixed (she was the one who bought him the car), after she told me she would, I kind of forgot about it. Son came home from school a week before I expected him to, and The car wasn’t sent to be repaired yet.

I don’t want to get into the reaction too much, but he was not very happy. He was furious at both me and his sister. He tore into her really bad, making her cry. I recently was finally able to put a stop to him calling her a retard (this has been a problem for years, since daughter showed signs of social awkwardness but I finally got him to stop as of last year) but after this he kept sarcastically gloating that he was right and his sister is retarded. He said he was taking all of his valuables out of our home, because he β€œobviously can’t trust” me with anything of his.

My mom paid for the car to be fixed, but son is insisting his sister or I pay my mom back for the damages since it was our fault and we are β€œgetting off without consequences”. I know I was wrong to lend him the car but I tried to hide it from him only to protect my daughter. Was I wrong?

Edit: daughter is NOT in therapy for the way her brother treats her. I had a poor choice of words, I did not mean that literally. I just meant he can be a

ILPT: free alcohol and weed for college students

If you are a college student with access to buildings and the university has gathering, drug, or other kinds of restrictions, this will work best.

1: Go into a dorm wearing a lanyard or college t-shirt (preferably one you dont live in) and go to a loud hallway and find the loudest, busiest room.

2: Knock on said room's door and announce that you are a house fellow and are coming to check on a noise/gathering/weed smell/etc.. report

3: If the situation presents itself, say you need to come in and check for illegal substances or whatever and go in and look for it (Also works for hotplates or any other dorm contraband)

4: Explain that you need to confiscate the substances, and if met with protest, say that either you can take it with only a warning or campus police can with a ticket

5: Free drugz

Discussion Thread: Joint Session of Congress for Counting of Electoral College Ballots | 01/06/2021 | Live - 1:00pm ET

Today, Vice President Mike Pence will preside over a Joint Session of both chambers of Congress, which will tally and certify the electors for Joe Biden, finalizing his win in the 2020 Election.

##What will happen:

Senate and House of Representatives assemble at 1:00 p.m. in a joint session at the Capitol, in the House chamber, to count the electoral votes and declare the results (3 U.S.C.

  • Vice President Mike Pence:

>As we reconvene in this chamber, the world will again witness the resilience and strength of our democracy. For even in the wake of unprecedented violence and vandalism at this Capitol, the elected representatives of the people of the United States have assembled again on the very same day to support and defend the constitution of the United States.

  • Sen. Mitch McConnell:

>We will not be kept out of this chamber by thugs, mobs or threats. We will not bow to lawlessness or intimidation.

  • Sen. Lindsey Graham:

>I don't buy this. Enough's enough. We've got to end it. Vice President Pence, what they are asking you to do you won't do because you can't ... If you're a conservative, this is the most offensive concept in the world, that a single person could disenfranchise 155 million people.
