I just received my results and i am in shock. From what i have heard and read ,i would not be able to have my ear implanted. I still need to talk with my ENT,for the moment i am just crushed.
Hey everyone, I am a long time lurker since I have a friend who is deaf since birth and one who is a sign language interpreter so I was kind of excited to find the r/deaf sub. Both of my friends are not very familiar with this topic so I thought I give it a shot here.
Iβd hoped you guys could help me out helping my sister with just some advice about her new cochleae implant. My sister (37) uses it for one ear which she was already using a hearing aid on for a few years. The other ear is fine btw. After 4 years she felt the batteries were always flat, well, it wasnβt the batteries and the hearing loss was complete. She struggled a lot with following conversations and had a bad time with it all in general so after long consideration and advice from experts and doctors she decided to go through with the procedure. The procedure went well and what can I tell you, she is getting used to it for about 6 months now and feels better with it! She is using an app to practice (apart from frequent sessions at the hospital) and manages the settings with it as well (which I find utterly impressive) So far so good!
Now of course she is getting all the advice from medical experts and maybe that is enough but as my sister is not the kind of person who would research about those things so I was wondering if you have some hands on advice I could pass on to her or maybe something I could do which you found helpful during your first months (or ever).
I heard her learning animal voices so I imitated a few and send it to her, which was merely a joke, but it made her laugh which is good.
TL;DR Basically the title
I was asking her for the exact model but she couldnβt tell me, edit if I find out.
I donβt want any spoilers but is there a reason why dangerous ghouls are kept in a prison instead of simply killed off?
I have symptoms of worsened tinnitus from an acid trip 2 weeks ago. It's hard to say, but I also think the hearing of the affected ear is worse. I've been trying to find the reason for this, as it seems like I'm not the only one with this experience regarding psychedelics. My latest amateur theory is that it's because of the LSD causing ischemic injury to the cochlea through glutamate excitoxicity.
Since sudden deafness can be caused by vascular spasms and LSD is a vasoconstrictor I'm also wondering if that could be an alternative way of damage.
Any thoughts on this theory?

Hi, I have a middle ear infection. I've been getting them repeatedly for a few weeks now. I've tried several antibiotics and every time, they almost clear it and then I'll wake up one morning and have a huge pressure buildup which hurts like hell. This then pops a day or two later and then the discharge begins....
The discharge is a weird thing. It's really runny but once it reaches the septum and exterior skin it dries up and becomes a really flaky wax. It STINKS. I cannot stress enough how bad it smells. I use a towel on my pillow which I boil wash every day ready for the night. When I wake up in the mornings I feel REALLY sick. The smell is bad but I also have this awful taste in the back of my mouth. The combination makes me feel sick.
So I was under the impression that the infection was fungal but I find it weird that the fluid that comes out is so thin and water like. The leaking also comes with a lovely side portion of dizzy. Like "I just drank half a bottle of whiskey" kind of dizzy. So I was wondering if there's a chance the fluid is actually cochlea fluid (or whatever the fluid that helps you balance is called) rather than water or liquid fungus. I don't really know much about ear anatomy, I don't know how this would work. But if there's a chance it is the balancing fluid, does that fluid regenerate at any point or am I gonna have to have fluid surgically planted back in my ear?
I should also mention that I have a pre-existing perforation in my ear drum that has been there for 3 years and never healed. I got it in a lifeguarding course and so there might be a chance there's been water in there for years and it's just coming out. Again, I don't know how likely this is, I'm not a doctor. I should ALSO mention that my family has a history of ear infections. My dad has had surgery to enlarge his ear canal and my uncle and grandad have both had ear problems that I don't really know the details of.
My doctor said it would clear in 3-5 days, and it does tend to be almost clear after this period but then I get another pressure build-up and it repeats.
So basically my question is, what's wrong with me? Do I need to worry? And what would be the best course of action?
Is the cochlea is the place where the CCG hold all of the most dangerous ghouls, then why wasn't Arima sent to help defend it whilst the Aogiri was attacking. Think about it he would have wiped the floor with but they didn't put the CCG didn't even think to send the strongest asset. Also why wouldn't Arima just go on his own volition, I mean that wouldn't be any reason for them to stop him and he would have had plenty of time to get to the cochlea considering the fact that Juuzo and Shinohora could just drive there and got the relatively near the start of the raid. Sorry actually does go to the cochlea in the manga I haven't read that bit yet.
I'm basing on this part of an article from Wikipedia and this diagram
For what I understand the vibrations come in the cochlea through the oval window, run all the way through the vestibular duct (which connects to the tympanic duct at the apex), then run through the tympanic duct and come "out" through the round window. And the cochlear duct is between both vestibular and tympanic ducts, somehow getting the waves to the fluid and furthermore to the hairs.
But now this part confuses me a lot
> The perilymph in the vestibular duct and the endolymph in the cochlear duct act mechanically as a single duct, being kept apart only by the very thin Reissner's membrane. The vibrations of the endolymph in the cochlear duct displace the basilar membrane in a pattern that peaks a distance from the oval window depending upon the soundwave frequency. The organ of Corti vibrates due to outer hair cells further amplifying these vibrations. Inner hair cells are then displaced by the vibrations in the fluid
First
>The perilymph in the vestibular duct and the endolymph in the cochlear duct act mechanically as a single duct, being kept apart only by the very thin Reissner's membrane.
Does this mean that the vibrations are directly passed from the vestibular to the cochlear duct? And that the vibrations "returning" through the tympanic duct are not passed to the cochlear due to a thicker layer between them?
Second
>The vibrations of the endolymph in the cochlear duct displace the basilar membrane
How does the vibrations in the fluid move the basilar membrane if this is placed on the ticker layer and is separated by the cells of the organ of Corti?
Third
>The organ of Corti vibrates due to outer hair cells further amplifying these vibrations
Does these vibrations refer to the ones in the fluid or the ones in the basilar membrane?
Fourth
>Inner hair cells are then displaced by the vibrations in the fluid
If the hair cells register the vibrations in the fluid why does the basilar membrane has to move too?
And one final question: Are the stereocilia (hair-like structures on top of the hair cells) physically connected to the tectorial membrane? As the first diagram shows that they are but this video (minute 1:00) from the same article shows the

I desperately need some help now. My tinnitus. It gotten so bad, I actually called myself into emergency. It is just driving my absolutely mad, giving me headaches and I am living in a state of constant mania because of it. And I am deeply worried I am going to get fired from my job as a taxi driver because of this. I also fear that using white noise is just making it even worse. Now my question is this. If a doctor was to just straight up remove my cochlea or whatever it is that is causing the ringing, could it end this? I only have tinnitus in one ear so I can afford to be deaf in one ear. I want this nightmare to end.

>Abstract
>
>An apparently unique form of cochlear damage was produced in guinea pigs by perfusing the cochlea or injecting the cerebrospinal fluid with bacterial endotoxin. This developed rapidly (within two hours) and was characterised by swelling of the tectorial membrane and damage to both inner and outer hair cells, with parallel functional damage demonstrable electrophysiologically. All these changes could be attenuated by pretreatment with dexamethasone. Such endotoxin mediated lesions may be the mechanism by which hearing loss occurs in bacterial meningitis.
Which one do you pick? Please include age and location I post please? Iβm currently trying to pick one. Thanks
I recently (11 days ago) suffered from SSHL. I'm not asking for advice about that as I'm working with an ENT, but I'm curious about the cochlea itself. Since this is idiopathic and people don't completely understand the condition, I'm looking to find more info about the organ itself.
I'll be starting HBOT tomorrow as a secondary form of treatment, as I'm finishing up the intratympanic injections and prednisone pills are tapering down. I've recovered from -100/-110 high frequency to about -80/-90 so far (still hovering around -70 for the low frequency yet it feels like it might as well be nothing). I'm wondering how the cochlea is able to heal itself, how long it takes for the hairs inside to be toast for good, and any other information you guys may have to enlighten me.
I got in on day 0 at emerge and diagnosed immediately. Started the prednisone that night and started injections 2 days after. So I understand I'm on the worse side of the spectrum, but I'm only 30 and got in early so hopefully theres some light (sound?) at the end of the tunnel!
From the research I have done it seems that Tinnitus comes from damage hair cells inside the cochlea, in the inner ear. If we could regenerate that, could it cure it? Also, psilocybin has shown the ability to produce neurogenesis, or the restoration of nerves/neurons in the brain and nervous system. I wonder if psilocybin combined with something else could completely cure Tinnitus?
Im just doing this because there may be people who'd want to have a summary. Please consider the current chapter was chapter 98 of re so don't be like "you missed this and this in ch 98+" if you are from the future since currently the end of the recent chapter indicates the end of the Rue arc.
Pre Arc Haise Sasaki / Kaneki Ken has now been titled an Associate-Special Class investigator. He is now known as The CCGs Black Reaper since he resembles Arima in many ways , including fighting style as mentioned during the Special-Class meeting. He now seeks to hunt down everything related to Aogiri. His current partner is Furuta Nimura , Kijima's ex-assistant. The Qs Squad has gathered new members : Higemaru , a son of a family who works in law and police ; Hsiao , a child of the Sunlit Garden ; Aura Shinpansei , Nephew of the first female Special Class , Kyoko Aura . Urie now is the one asking Hinami about Aogiri since Ken has no time. Ken and Furuta are now interrogating Takatsuki Sen's Editor ,Shiono .
Special-Class Meeting Haise Sasaki (due to Arima's absence ), Koori Ui , Matsuri Washuu , Yoshitoki Washuu , Kyoko Aura , Mougan Tanakamaru, Juuzou Suzuya , Kousuke Houji and Prison Chief Haisaki are meeting at the 2nd special class meeting in the series considering the Extermination of Aogiri . As Haise says , the current hideout of Aogiri is highly likely to be Rushima Island - Haise and his squad are meanwhile investigating the one eyed owl who CCG and he believes is the OEK. Meanwhile Eto is giving a speech to th rest of Aogiri where she revealed herself as the one eyed owl , but she denies the fact that she is the One Eyed King . She tells Aogiri the tale of the OEK , ghoul whose fault it was the CCG was created due to its enormous strength. She tells Aogiri that there is in fact a OEK. In another place Furuta tells Arima that V wants to talk about Kaneki Ken. During Vs meeting they tell Arima to take care of Rize's thing and they tell Furuta to keep watch over Kaneki Ken.
Pre Operation Haise Sasaki interrogateds Shiono who seems to not know if Eto is a ghoul or not. After some time Shiono spills the beans and tells Haise how he found out Takatsuki Sen is a ghoul. Not long after Eto / Takatsuki gives herself in to the CCG to seemingly help Shiono out of the situation . She reveals that she is the One Eyed Owl . Eto asks for a last conference regarding her last book . Before this conference she cuts her hair . During this conference she
For a time-dependent stimulus/signal (such as sound) the fourier transform assigns a number to how much that stimulus oscillates in strength with respect to a give frequency (e.g. 2500 Hertz or 12000 Hertz).
When a sound gets to our cochlea certain hair cells are attuned to certain frequencies, and are stimulated according to how puissant that frequency is. We hear these different frequencies as high or low pitches.
Does that mean it gets coch blocked?
I read through the whole manga and I still canβt figure it out..
So far its probably the most polarizing arc of the series and I was wondering what people here think about it.
For me it had some really great moments but also some rather weak stuff.
I think everything with Kaneki, Arima and Eto was great. Definitely the highlight of the arc, the revelations were well done and the latter two got more depth (especially Arima was bland before this arc). The Cochlea part in general was good.
Kaneki becoming the OEK was very satisfying to see. Furuta also became more interesting here.
But now to the problems. Rue Island was just a huge mess with way too many characters (many of them appearing out of nowhere) and fake outs, worst part of the series for me. The only good parts were Amon and Takizawa.
I personally couldn't care less about Mutsuki and even though I like Tsukiyama a lot (Nishki too) both felt unnecessary in this arc. Tatara was a joke and the Kurona story was meh too.
All the fighting became tedious really fast too.
All in all the Cochlea part would be a 8.5/10 for me, Rue Island 4/10
Idk how to use reddit at the moment, so i hope im doing this right, but what do you think the CCG does with ghoul children they come across? I don't think we've come across ghoul children in Cochlea so far, so do they just kill them? It seems strange they would, while merely just imprisoning older ghouls (maybe because they cant get any info out of them?). And by children, im also curious about ghoul babies and toddlers...y'know, the ones who can't somewhat take care of themselves in a cell
Am I the only one who's enjoying this arc? Aside from a few setbacks like the entirety of Furuta's flawless planning and absurd power level as well as Tatara getting taken out way too quickly, I'm actually liking this arc enough to the point where I actually don't care about its flaws and sometimes completely forget about them.
particularly Yomo, Ayato, and Touka vs Arima.
Holy fuck is that one of the best few chapters of the series. All the backstory, build-up and character conflict/motivation leading up to this point is crazy.
The whole Kirishima backstory with Arima is just one of the best things in the series, imo. The whole scenario with Hikari, Arata and Yomo is one of the most tragic backstorys in the manga... it's just so sad.
This made me really want more Yomo screen-time. He's such a badass, tragic character.
I still pray for an Arata scene. please ishida..
Yeah, I am making really long gaps between those posts, but this is the last one before we reach the ongoing. I will make a Clown Siege/CCG Lab Infiltration Arc discussion when this arc will end and a new one will start.

As Sasaki falls, Arima begins to slice off his limbs every time they regenerate. Losing consciousness, Sasaki accepts his fate, however, inside his mind, "Hideyoshi Nagachika" suddenly appears criticizing his suicidal tendencies. Hideyoshi expresses doubts about his friends' survival and urges that Sasaki must continue fighting. He tells Sasaki that he will repeat it as many times as he needs to, he tells Sasaki to live, even if it is not stylish.
Greetings. To the people who always see me on here, hello! And to those who are new, welcome to r4r!
Ever felt like you were losing your hearing in one of your ears? The last couple of weeks have been extremely scary. It comes and goes, I wake up barely able to hear anything in my right ear some nights. I feel a sense of buzzing in it occasionally, it mostly aches though and it is painful to touch. I am absolutely terrified of heading to the ENT on my own. It's not really much of a bother since it's not a constant feeling or stress, just when it comes and goes, I start to panic. I live abroad, but I fly home in two weeks so I'm heading to the ENT then, here's to hoping I'm not losing my hearing in my early twenties.
Besides that though, why am I on r4r yet again? I'm part of the r4r honour alumni at this point. I used to post here so very regularly, mostly to rant and vent, and hey, look at what I'm doing now?! As said before, I find solace in writing and I like how r4r is a space to write. I'm also extremely alone, I'm trying to deal with a long distance relationship with someone who is not as emotionally invested into it as me, and that frustrates me. I also live in one of the loneliest countries in the world. Mind you, the national university has an average death rate of 3 per semester, so that says a lot about the place. I attended international school, so most of my friends don't live in the same country as me anymore, and being a **MEGA** nerd in university doesn't help in making a ton of friends in such a robotic society.
Speaking of university, I am currently in the middle of a Price Theory lecture funnily enough. That should somewhat giveaway my location. Which means I have plenty of time to respond because I am very much a procrastinator. I'm in second year and I've been told this year is the KILLER year. To be honest, I already feel that. I feel like first year was the sandbox we have in my backyard, and second year is a free fall jump into the Pacific Ocean from a Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne. HELP.
HI CHRIS! You are probably reading this too. Shoutout to Chris who is an avid redditor! I love his company, and he's such a great friend. LADIES, he's very much single and should definitely MINGLE! :)
So, why should you message? Man, I can't believe I'm actually trying to think of something to say. I suppose if you enjoyed my rant, you like my style of writing, or I sound somewhat psychotic (as a lot of men say so on here), then do drop me
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hello, would anyone have information to share if there are known structural/chemical/etc. differences in these types of damages? I am following the progress of Frequency Therapeutics trials: http://www.frequencytx.com/
Its objectives in this trial are for noise-induced hearing loss, however nothing was mentioned (that I know of) if that it also has implications for treating hair cell damage due to exposure to ototoxic drugs.
Last time cochlea got raided, it was at the 11th ward Aogiri raid. Tatara and Eto lead the rest of Aogiri for their original plan in securing strong S to SS rank ghouls among their side. At that very time, Kaneki was being tortured by yamori in a character changing moment for Kaneki. With what came from re: chapter 65, if Ayato does raid cochlea along with Banjou (Best Bro is back!) It will be the second time Cochlea gets raided in the whole of the manga series. So with Ishidas parallels between :re and the first series: I believe that maybe:
Mutsuki who is currently being tortured by Torso will have a large change in character. Perhaps embracing his "Iam a Woman" as Kaneki embraced "I am a Ghoul"
Amongst the confusion and chaos of the second raid on cochlea, we could expect S and SS ghouls escaping. Shachi in the 1st series, maybe donato in :re.
A large backfire on CCG who thought they had held Aogiri to a close and all was fine. Also a victory for ccg on rue island just like 11th ward battle in the first manga, AND another surprise disapointment for them because if cochlea raid and all.
Most importantantly, Suuzou was the main hero for the 11th ward battle and suprised his superiors despite being a rookie. I think that something like that might be the case also for rue island, with maybe someone from the Qs (probably shao) to do something similar.
I could be over thinking this though so please correct me for any mistaken fact as such from my examples :)
EDIT: Sorry for not explaining (1) properly and making it sound stupid. What I mean is, if Mutsuki gets a change in character after some torture and possible rape by Torso, she will most likely be constantly reminded of her true character and accept what she had been hiding for too long from not just others but herself. This can be parallel to what Kaneki had to face, as he hid his true nature from himself and could not accept of being a human-eating one eyed ghoul and later on accepted it wholly for the better of himself. Not comparing ghouls to women though!! Lol
be a 12/13 episode season if adapted? There's so much action and fighting going on, I suppose it would match with what they're doing with the :re season, but the pacing in my opinion would be polar opposite with how it is right now. And if it didn't fill up the entire season, would they just throw in the clown arc and end it on 125?
Edit: And what if they want continue with a 3rd(5th) season? Unless :re is ending really soon... man this series should not be a seasonal release lol.
Which hair cells in the cochlea are activated when a short, unperiodic sound wave is picked up? When a wave is periodic it stimulates the same parts of the basilar membrane in the cochlea, which in turn stimulate the same hair cells, and we hear it as a tone. There are two main theories on how this signal becomes the experience of a tone in the brain, but that is not what this question is about. I am wondering which hair cells are being stimulated when a short unperiodic wave hits the ear drum. What i mean by unperiodic short wave is a wave with no period. A sudden shift in air pressure that doesnt repeat. At the start of the pressure shift a short "snapping"-sound is heard. i want to know why this snapping sound, sounds as it does. i have tried to figure it out by looking at the difference of sound when i simulate in through a computer program (audacity). It turns out that sudden and large (amplitude wise) changes in pressure makes higher pitched sounding snaps. While sudden and small (amplitude wise) changes in pressure makes lower pitched snaps. This might have something to do with the speakers or computer so there might not be a difference between low amplitude snaps and high amplitude snaps. I have tried this on multiple computers and speakers, and they all show the same thing. I hope i made my questions clear. If not, i would love to elaborate more. Any answers, comments questions etc. are welcome.
Is cochlea reset in cochlea crusade the same as cochlea refreshes? Because my cochlea crusade's free reset still once, although my vip's level is 5 and the privilage said vip 5 got 2 cochlea refreshes. Sorry for my English
XXX 23rd Ward - Cochlea, First Floor (~A rate level); 10th of May, 15:32
Descending the long staircase down to the A rated cells of Cochlea, Associate Class Kotetsu retained his indifference and composure even as he felt the notably colder, chilling air of the accursed ghoul detention facility enter his lungs. This prison really was something. The tough, massive walls keeping in the ghouls secure. The enigmatic, intimidating guards that always kept watch. The bleak, dark colours all around. It was a somewhat depressive atmosphere. The stale air gradually constricted its grip onto the throats of any who dared venture deeper into the fabled fortress of the CCG - the immense cage that embraced the greatest foes of humankind with its powerful clutches.
Many would be overwhelmed by the sheer aura of awe and reverence that resonated within the building itself. Torabashi, however, simply desired to get on with the task at hand and be done with it - it had been a long trip to the 23rd Ward and he had lots of paperwork to do in the 4th Ward Branch Office. He had no time to waste with this type of business. How utterly unfortunate that Special Class Kotsuzan had been urgently called to help with some S rate's extermination. Seriously, can't the other seniors even handle something as simple as that without having to call back-up?
Shaking his head almost unnoticeably, Torabashi briefly lamented the fact that he was the only one who could really replace Kotsuzan in this little picnic trip. At least his company had been of some quality. First Class Okazaki was one of the few that Torabashi felt some respect for. He had no opinion on this Initiate Izanagi as this had been their first meeting, although Special Class Kotsuzan had requested that Izumi and Ryo accompany Torabashi during the interrogation. Apparently the Izanagi fellow had even shown initiative and desire to participate in the whole activity. If that was true, then it was commendable, and it was definitely more than what most of Kotsuzan squad could brag about.
Finally reaching the interrogation room, the Associate Special Class suddenly stopped. Briefly turning his head backwards towards his underlings, Torabashi's cold voice seemed to rather fit into the setting, his stern expression appearing just a bit more engaged than usual.
"This is an important interrogation. I'll be the one doing most of the talking, but if you can think of anything important to ask him - do it. When you speak, don't fee
