DIY Clutch Pedal Extender How-To (For Us Short People!)

I posted this DIY originally as a reply to someone who asked about mine, and I thought it would be a good idea to post for anyone who might be thinking about or looking into something of this nature.

You will need a rubber coil spring spacer block, a pedal pad/cover set with four bolt holes, four 2" philips head machine screws with nylon lock nuts, a wrench or vise grips, and a drill (preferably a titanium or metal-specific bit). Take the pedal pad/cover with you to the hardware store to find one where the head fits comfortably into the bolt hole without the head going through.

  • Pedal Pads/Covers. This link is the set I bought, but if you scroll down the page, you will find quite a few choices. I found my set cheapest on Ebay, about 13 bucks, whereas the auto parts stores only had ugly ones and they ran about 20 bucks.
  • Coil Spring Spacer/Booster blocks. You can find these at some auto parts stores for 8-12 bucks as well, usually in packs of four.
  • Philips-Drive Machine Screws. This link is for reference, but if you have an Ace Hardware near you, you can get the four screws and nylon lock nuts to match for less than 2 bucks instead of having to buy a pack. I swear that every single time I need something small like this, Home Depot and Lowe's never have what I need, but Ace Hardware does every single time, AND they know exactly where to take me in the store as well as exactly what I'm asking about, even when I don't.

  1. Throw away the mounting hardware that comes with the pedal set you got, trust me. I tried that hardware to avoid drilling, but the cover will eventually slip off.
  2. Take your drill and drill holes in the four corners of the pedal. You will find it a lot easier if you can center-punch each drill location first to keep the drill head in place, and you may want some help holding the pedal down a bit so you can both fit the drill in the working area and have the proper angle to apply force. Each hole took a bit of time and effort for me, and a lot of sweat and curse words while d

The pivot point on the bellhousing was taken apart and cleaned/greased. I didnt lube the cable before installing it because I didnt think it was necessary but some people say its needed on the non OEM cables.

The quadrant does allow a tiny bit of slack.

Clutch Pedal Low After Sitting Overnight

Hi everyone,

I have an 06 Scion tC with manual trans. It's old and on its 2nd transmission (I installed a used replacement trans and new clutch several years ago). It just developed a problem these last couple of weeks: when I start it up in the morning the clutch pedal is extremely low and stays that way until it gradually builds pressure during driving.

This problem is worse if it's been sitting a couple of days. I haven't noticed any leaks. As far as i know the clutch and brakes share the same reservoir and the fluid level is right where it should be. Any ideas what could be the culprit?

Squeaky Clutch pedal

Hey Guys,

After my short trip today I realized a weird noise coming from under the steering wheel. Turn out my clutch pedal started to squeak out of nowhere.

I think the squeaking is coming from a black hydraulic piston which I presume to be the "pushrod". Since I just found out about this squeaking today I can't tell if it's always present. All I know is today it squeaked when changing gears, idling and when the motor is off. Since the squeaking also happens when the motor is turned off I'm thinking its a part that I can easily fix/replace.

I know about the clutch pedal bracket problem and I don't think it the problem. The pedal hasn't moved closer to the brake pedal and the actual metal of the bracket isn't showing a tear. I don't think it the bracket.

I'll put the video of the clutch on my profile and put the link in a comment.

I'm hoping some of you know a fix to this because I am for sure too new the community and lack the automotive knowledge. I'm trying my best to learn...

Any help would be appreciated!

Should I go out of my way to get a regressive clutch with my pedals?

I’m planning on getting CSL elite pedals LC and was wondering if I should spend an extra hundred dollars to get a Heusinkveld clutch which has an over the top mechanism. Before you ask why I don’t get the V3 pedals, I have to be able to mount them inverted to my own sim rig so they have to come off of the base. The pedals would be mismatched, but I’m OK with that. My question is does the regressive clutch add that much to the immersion to be worth an extra hundred dollars?

Clutch chirps when pedal is out, throw out bearing or something else?

I have a 2008 Impreza with a clutch that has less than 1000 miles on it. The last few weeks it’s been making a chirping sound when in gear and in neutral, when my foot isn’t on the pedal. The sound disappears when I engage the clutch. It doesn’t go away as the car warms up, but it has been unusually rainy in the past few weeks, if that means anything. The car runs and drives fine but the sound is driving me nuts. Is it the throw out bearing or is there a more simple fix to this? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Clutch Pedal Vibration

Hey Guys!

Taking my car in but what some idea of what could be wrong so I don’t have to deal with dealer BS and workaround.

Car only has 4K miles on it. Completely stock. Lately, in between gears when shifting, both when depressing the clutch pedal and releasing the clutch pedal, I feel a vibration in the pedal, almost like the piece below where you actually put your foot is rubbing against the floor. However, I know it is not that, because when the car is not in gear, the pedal feels completely normal. However, as soon as I am in 1st and got 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and so ok, I feel it. It almost makes the pedal throw feel heavier as well and it’s worse in higher gears.

Any ideas what this could be? Throwout bearing? Input shaft bearing? Pilot bearing? Warped clutch disc? Slave/master cylinder?

I appreciate the input so the dealer knows I mean business and doesn’t say β€œthat’s normal”.

Edit: I did replace the RMM.

Stiff clutch pedal

Hi, all.

I have a Fiat Punto (2005) that has an extremely stiff clutch pedal. It's very hard to depress, it squeaks, and sometimes even gets stuck - i.e.: doesn't come back up and I have to push it again to get it unstuck. I've traced the problem to the 'hinge' on - what I assume to be - the clutch. I've been spraying it with WD40 to make it somewhat less stiff, but I have to do that 1-2 times a week to keep it going.

Is there something I can do myself to remedy this problem?

Related 1: In tracing the issue, I noticed that the clutch cable runs through a spiral plastic coil - almost 2 feet in length, I'm guessing - in the engine bay, before attaching to the aforementioned hinge. Is that normal?

Related 2: The clutch pedal itself is really small (shallow) and, because of the steep riser, I can only operate it with the tip of my toes - which, because of the stiff action, is quite hard to do. (After 20-30 mins. of driving, my toes get numb.) Admittedly, when the stiffness is solved, that's going to be easier. But, I've been wondering if there are pedal 'extensions' available, so I can operate it more towards the ball of the foot. (Which I was able to do with the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa I've owned previously.)

Thanks in advance for any advice/tips!

Super light clutch pedal after a clutch replacement?

2013 WRX hatch.

So, my throwout bearing just took a dump on me at 78k miles. I bought an FJK1001 Exedy OEM replacement clutch and had it installed at a shop. This is the same exact clutch I used to replace my 2008 WRX's clutch 7 years ago. Like, I literally went to Amazon and just hit "buy again" on the same order.

My concern is that the clutch is now way lighter. I had a 2008 WRX, replaced the clutch myself that time, then bought a 2013, and all three clutches have felt exactly the same. This 4th clutch is just super light to where it feels like a completely different car. I almost feel like I'm re-learning how to drive it.

Seems to drive just fine. Doesn't seem like it's slipping. The only minor thing I can think of is that, going from neutral to first gear without adding any gas, it seems to shudder a bit more but that could be a result of me just no longer knowing how much foot pressure I need to add/release to get to the engagement point easily.

Anyone else experience this? Nothing I should worry about?

I had the wheel since December 2019, still have the warranty but I don't think this is an hardware problem, especially because I barely used the clutch (it used to work like a week ago)... One thing I really dislike about it is constantly having to rev the hell out of the car and then just drop the clutch, is there anything i can do to make the clutch pedal more linear or make it feel more real?

Clutch Pedal Play & Adjustment

Hey all, I just made an adjustable clutch rod for the Genesis Coupe and wondered if any of you would be interested in something similar for the Veloster. The stock clutch rod is a solid plastic piece that slowly wears out and can't be adjusted. Meaning the clutch pedal becomes sloppy, shifting becomes notchy, and engagement is low to the floor. I installed my prototype adjustable rod into my Genesis and was floored by how much better it shifts.

If one of you have an old clutch master cylinder laying around, PM me so I can start mocking a new rod in CAD.

Fanatec V3 pedals worth it if no need for clutch?

I'm relatively new to sim racing, but have no interest in playing cars with a clutch, I prefer formula or pedal cars.

I wanted to buy this v3 pedals as build quality looks amazing, but I can't adjust the pedal setup. Should I instead just settle for CSL elite where I can configure pedals as I like? The leftover budget can be put towards a cockpit or wheel base.

Unfortunately heusinkveld is out of my budget.

DIY Clutch Pedal Extender How-To (For Us Short People!)

I posted this DIY originally as a reply to someone who asked about mine over in the /r/WRX subreddit, and I thought it would be a good idea to post here as well for anyone who might be thinking about or looking into something of this nature. I tried crossposting, but this sub wouldn't come up as a choice even though I'm subbed to it. Pics are only from long after completion, but there isn't much to show pics of, the instructions are clear enough. Hopefully somebody here will find this useful.

You will find it a lot easier if you can center-punch
