What is Cloudflare?

Cloudflare is going to make a leading player in next-generation computing. From their blog: https://blog.cloudflare.com/rendering-react-on-the-edge-with-flareact-and-cloudflare-workers/. Excerpt:

>“Imagine you’re the maintainer of a high-traffic media website, and your DNS is already hosted on Cloudflare.

You also need to render ads in a speedy way to maintain a good user experience and make money to support your journalism...  you’re going to need to pay for some beefy servers to be able to handle spikes in traffic and respond to requests in a timely manner...Cloudflare Workers allow you to run your code on the edge quickly, efficiently and at scale. Seriously, this is cool, and it’s only beginning. Cloudflare is innovating every day. Their customers absolutely love them. As a software engineer, they have already have some products are there that are pretty cool like Cloudflare Pages and Cloudflare Workers. I think what’s going to help them into a powerhouse is this:

And just to be clear: this is not just for stateless functions. With Workers KV and Durable Objects, we see a huge opportunity to really enable any web application to be built on this platform.

Soon, developers will be able to make full-stack applications end-to-end using Cloudflare’s network. Cloudflare will handle all of the annoying stuff about development including hosting and deployment. And they’ll allow developers of all size to instantly scale their application across the entire United States, all while increasing developer productivity and satisfaction.

If you’re not a developer, you probably didn’t understand most of that, but essentially

Do you know that Cloudflare is a domain registrar with really low fees?

If you didn't know you can transfer your domain from namecheap, godaddy, ... For a better price to cloudflare.

https://www.cloudflare.com/products/registrar/

They don't advertise this service much so I guess a lot of people didn't know (hence my post).

They state that they do not charge any fee on top of ICANN fees and what they pay for the domain. I do not know if that is true but they do have the lowest fixed price that I have ever seen (without counting the "first year discont" that some registrars offer).

You can't buy the domain directly on cloudflare but you can transfer it from another registrar.

The smart thing to do is to buy where the first year costs the lowest (for example at porkbun) and the to transfer to Cloudflare to keep the next years price as low as possible.

Futhermore you would probably use Cloudflare anyway due to the features that they offer for free.

EDIT: A few things have been pointed out which is worth knowing:

  1. They do not offer geography domains (for now)
  2. You have to use Cloudflare's nameservers. I didn't even notice this because I would use their DNS anyway since their free tier is awesome imo.

Question about Cloudflare DNS

I currently have my router pointed to my Pi-Hole via DNS Server, and a few months ago, I changed the DNS address on my Pi-Hole to Cloudflare's servers (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1). I noticed that my experience hasn't been as great, while speeds have been good, it seems like there are issues with certain apps and web pages loading when I have Pi-Hole using Cloudflare DNS (essentially, certain elements or apps take a long time to fully load in). I switched to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8) and the problems suddenly disappeared. This morning, I switched back to Cloudflare DNS again and the problems popped back up.

My ISP is Comcast, so I am not sure if there can be something wonky going on with that, or if perhaps something in my setup of Pi-Hole is causing these issues? Otherwise, it seems my option, for now, is to stick to Google's DNS server or find an alternative?

Are there any other tech stocks that have a 50b or lower cap that you have your eyes on?

Is CloudFlare the "best" DNS resolver still? (been out of the loop for a while)

It's been a couple years since I've looked into things, the last time I was up to date on this stuff was when 1.1.1.1 just launched. Since then that's all I've used until last night I stumbled upon a pi-hole(something I used to have, I should really set up a new one) post where in the comments a bunch of guys were discussing which DNS to use when a bunch of them suggested Quad9, something I've never heard of. I've done a little bit of research and it seems Quad9 is a big contender now and I guess the newest since cloudlfare and apparently has the best security? Ultimately what I read was that you can't go wrong with any of the 3 top dogs like cloudflare/google/quad9 the differences are legit in milliseconds of one another but I'm not sure about privacy. My understanding was all 3 were private but I guess quad9 is doing something new the others aren't? . Just wondering what you guys over here think. Should I switch from cloudlfare to quad9?

I am in Myanmar, and there was a coup recently. Now, the military dictator is trying to build a censorship system with the help of China CCP. Many sites are blocked and we have to use proxy and other paid software. Recently, they are even blocking these in their DNS, so they can be connected only using other DNS like Google or Cloudflare. So, in the future, can they block these DNS servers completely? If so, how can we bypass that? Is there a way?

Cloudflare is killing me...

So I started selfhosting some services such Bitwarden_rs, Grafana, Pi-Hole, Nginx Proxy Manager and some others. All is in Docker containers except Wireguard.

I wanted to have a domain for some of them, like Bitwarden and if I get around that, to Nextcloud. Logically, I bought a domain that'll call example.com. I wanted to expose my domestic IP the minimum possible, so I created a new account in Cloudflare, setup a A DNS that points my root domain example.com to my Public IP.

After that, I created some subdomains, and after not being able to make them work as I wanted, I created two control domains:

  • control1.example.com
  • control2.example.com

The first one is set as follows. The bolded part is what is different between them. Cloudflare SSL/TLS encryption mode is Full.

Cloudflare: ---> CNAME control1 targets example.com. Proxied Nginx Proxy Manager ---> Domain name control1.example.com fowarded http:/192.168.1.11 Port 123. Block common exploits ON. Force SSL and using cert from LetsCertificate.

The second is as follows: Cloudflare: ---> CNAME control1 targets example.com. DNS Only Nginx Proxy Manager ---> Domain name control1.example.com fowarded http:/192.168.1.11 Port 123. Block common exploits ON. Force SSL and using cert from LetsCertificate.

As of now, control2.example.com works just fine, while each time I use control1.example.com my browsers tells me that it couldn't make a secure connection. When I ping these domains, control1 shows me a different IP than mine, and has around 150ms ping, while when I ping control2, it shows my IP and the ping is really low.

I've watched a couple of videos on how doing this same setup to see if I catch something done differently, but I don't really find anything.

The only thing I think could help would be installing the Origin cert from Cloudflare, but I don't know how to and haven't seen much documentation about that. I've been hours at this, so any help is much appreciated.

CloudFlare ASN firewall filtering

I'm using CloudFlare as the external DNS/reverse proxy for my HA. I've got firewall rules setup in Cloudflare based on my country geo-based IP, as well as Google Home based bypass.

To further lock things down, I'm wondering if anyone has tried using the ASN source info for stronger rules.
For example, my mobile provider has their own ASN info that all my companion app requests come from...could I only allow access from that ASN and my country so that other providers can't access it? Yes it still leaves a lot of possible people..but it's much less than not doing it.

I also notice that all the Google Home requests seem to go through a Google ASN number.

My home firewall only allows HA access from CloudFlare as well.

The Case for Cloudflare's Continued Growth

Why Cloudflare Is Positioned for Continued Strong Growth

The largest growth opportunity I see for Cloudflare within the next year is with Cloudflare One and Cloudflare for Teams offerings, as it really fits a distributed workforce better than traditional VPN offerings. The pandemic has highlighed this issue for many companies, and I expect to see a lot of companies moving to modern offerings like this instead of relying on firewall appliances.

The second largest growth opportunity that I see potentially in the next five years is the increased adoption of edge computing. Many established companies are still getting into containerization and serverless architecture. However, I expect to see a large increase in edge computing being used for new platforms and microservices over the next few years. I expect to see larger growth from slower moving companies further down the road as older platforms are refactored and re-architected to take advantage of new technology like this that decouples the code from managing infrastructure.

There are a lot of competitors in the space. However, few offer the same range of products, or the same level convenience and ease of setup and operation that Cloudflare does. This makes it an easy transition for many companies, while also allowing them to consolidate tools and platforms into a single company.

Some Other Highlights

  • Massive growth over the last two years - Beating expectations - Revenue rose to $125.9 million from $83.9 million in the year-ago quarter
  • ~66% increase in stock price since IPO
  • Companies with similar offerings range from ~$100-$200 per share
  • Broad range of products that help companies consolidate multiple tools/platforms into a single platform
  • Most Cloudflare services, like overall traffic, is not billed on usage, which keeps costs predictable
  • Ease of use - Very easy to roll out quickly
  • Low total cost of ownership
  • Great customer service
  • Focus on innovation - Tons of new products over the last two years
  • Early to the Edge Computing space
  • Provides value to free customers and the public
    • Free accounts with basic DDoS Protection
    • Cloudflare for Teams was free for quite a bit of 2020 to help in the pandemic
    • 1.1.1.1 private DNS Servers
    • Project Fair Shot
  • %5-%10 of internet traffic goes through Cloudflare (as of 2018)
    • ~16% of Fortune 1,000 runs through Cloudflare

Signal: All communication takes place via tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Cloudflare.

At Signal, all communication takes place via various tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Cloudflare. Broken down by domains, the following picture emerges:

❗️ Amazon: textsecure-service.whispersystems.org, cdn.signal.org, sfu.voip.signal.org ❗️ Google: storage.signal.org, contentproxy.signal.org ❗️ Microsoft: api.directory.signal.org, api.backup.signal.org ❗️ Cloudflare: cdn2.signal.org

Message exchange (textsecure-service.whispersystems.org) is done via Amazon AWS, for example, while Google Data Servers (storage.signal.org) are responsible for creating and managing the groups. This means that all communication is handled via central servers of the tech giants. Especially privacy-sensitive users may be put off by this, which I can understand. However, at least from an IT security perspective, I think the use of the rented servers is negligible, since Signal works with the zero-knowledge principle. Certainly, it would be desirable if the Signal Foundation hosted the servers itself. However, this would not necessarily mean a security gain. Nevertheless, this is a point of criticism, since this naturally also flushes money into the coffers of the tech data octopuses.

Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) is down?

Using 1.1.1.1 (actually 1.1.1.2) for home DNS and suddenly I wasn't able to connect to anything. Switching over to OpenDNS everything working fine. 1.1.1.1 dropping lots of pings.

EDIT: as others are reporting, it appears to be back up now

DD: If you're not in Cloudflare, strongly consider changing that. Earnings are great, the company is great, the mission is great. To find out why, read below

Alright guys. This is going to be long, but if you want actual DD, sit back and enjoy. NET is doing excellent, and will only continue to excel as it continues to grab market share and boom in the background.

Page speed is critical. You need to get content to your audience as quickly as possible on every device. Instead of paying for a server to host your code, you can host it directly inside the datacenter”

>Over the coming months, we’ll be working on integrating Workers and Pages into a seamless experience. It’ll work the exact same way Pages does: just write your code, git push, and we’ll deploy it for you. The only difference is, it won’t just be your frontend, it’ll be your backend, too.

If you’r
