Eight years after its original release, Cloud Atlas has its own base of lovers and haters. While I can understand both of those views, I'm firmly in the latter camp. Today, I learned that there's a 3h45m extended cut of it somewhere, which hasn't been seen by anyone until this day.
There was a lot of talk about this a couple of years ago, especially around the following article: https://www.indiewire.com/2015/02/netflix-chief-says-4-hour-cut-of-cloud-atlas-will-blow-you-away-wachowskis-doubt-theyll-get-big-studio-budgets-again-267294/
Yet, it's been quiet ever since.
I'm wondering: regardless of your opinion on this movie, do you think this cut will ever be released?
Any genre works. I just like a good epic.
A friend recommended Cloud Atlas and we watched it together. I had no knowledge about the movie going into it, and I was overwhelmed with emotion and introspection throughout the whole experience. I think itβs a timeless masterpiece, but apparently critics had polarizing opinions.
What did you like or not like about it?
It is a complicated love story, on 5 different presents. It is about love, death, eternity and the human nature. It is about us, humans, against the flow of time and it also shows how powerful love can be. Its just a incredible and complex movie, watch it focused and let me know if it was worth your time, but I am sure some of you guys will love it too! I will not spoil any bit of the movie.
For reference, I've also watched:
Arrival
Interstellar
Inception
A Scanner Darkly
Her
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Moon
Gravity (a bit overrated tbh)
Ghost in the Shell including the animated series (I also loved Ergo Proxy and Serial experiments Lain which are anime, not movies)
A Clockwork Orange
Gattaca
Minority Report
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Lucy (meh)
Paprika
Akira
Avatar (regret not seeing it in cinema)
The Fountain and Pi are also vaguely Sci-Fi, so I might just mention them.
edit: Forgot Fantastic Planet, Gandahar and Time Masters, three trippy animated Sci-Fi movies
If you have recommendations for TV series, books or anything else, I'm ready to hear.
edit: Yay! I watched Annihilation thanks to you, guys, and it was awesome!!!
I read this Goodreads review of Cloud Atlas, which changed my perspective on the book. I was already frustrated with the novel for other reasons, but that review really illuminated, for me, the cynical view of gender present in the work. While racial discrimination is already erased from the world in "An Orison of Sonmi~451" and "Sloosha's Crossin' An' Everythin' After," the subjugation of women persists no matter how far into the future we travel. The reason that Valleymen society frowns upon rape is really messed-up, not to mention the fact that it implicitly holds men in very low regard as well (check the Goodreads review for a pertinent quotation from Meronym's dialogue). While Robert Frobisher's affair with Jocasta contributed to his characterization, Sonmi's sex with Hae-Joo doesn't seem to add anything to her story, and one wonders why it's even included. For a novel ostensibly about the universality of the human story, you'd expect a more balanced perspective. Has anyone else considered this text through the lens of gender and feminism? What were your conclusions?
In the portion of the film in question, the year is 2144 and Neo Seoul is a place where consumerism has truly run rampant and the exploitation of workers and the natural world have been taken to the absolute extreme.
Rising sea levels have destroyed much of the old city of Seoul. Enslaved, fully sentient human clones are forced to dedicate their entire lives to a wide variety of menial, undignified work. The society is completely controlled by a faceless and brutal authoritarian regime of some kind. Hell, there's even a passing mention that citizens of this society are required by law to purchase a minimum amount of goods/services or face a harsh penalty.
Will any of this come to fruition? I certainly hope not and I think a brighter future is quite possible, but one could argue that our civilization is trending toward this kind of dystopian, dark future.
These are 2 favorites of mine. They're sort of magical but dark and suspenseful. They also introduce some interesting ideas about life and death, and the endings are hopeful. Anything that captures these qualities is what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for all of your suggestions! π
Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. I watched Tigers Are Not Afraid last night and it was great. Can't wait to see everything else!
Looking for movies similar to Cloud Atlas that have a futuristic dystopian theme or technology-heavy future societies. Preferably female lead or strong supporting character...
Cloud Atlas is a Twin Flame movie now that i think about it. Watched it a long time ago and watched it with her, she didn't understand the movie when i showed her. We're in separation but something tells me it's still not over even though we said our last words. I have that feeling that she will reach out again and it's not going away. Something isn't allowing me to just forget about her, even though she's hurt me and i hurt her as well, we were very harsh on each other at times. Something in me says that she'll reach out, yet i try to deny it. Why am i like this?
So before August this year, I have not read a novel in around 15 years. The last book I read was one about Elon Musk around 4 years ago. Also I am not native English speaker, but I prefer to read books in English. I also live in LA.
So thanks to all this Covid thing, I decided I need another hobby, and decided to try reading. Based on a blog post by Bill Gates, for some reason I decided to give Cloud Atlas a shot. And let me tell you, I was struggling the first few days. Especially due to the old language used in the first chapters.
However, I powered through, and started to enjoy the book more and more. I loved the different timelines, the complexity, the fact I had to re-read some sentences to even understand what is going on. After finishing the book, I kept thinking about it a lot.
Admitting that Cloud Atlas wasn't the best choice for my first novel after 15 years, I decided to browse through reddit for some recommendations. And there seemed to be consensus that The Martian is a great funny book, recommended by almost everyone.
I am now around 20 pages before finishing the book. I liked how easy it is to read, and I read it much faster than Cloud Atlas. However, sometimes it feels too easy and too straightforward. Pretty much most of the book is: Mark Watney discovers a problem/issue and within half a page he magically is able to solve it because he is probably a genius. And this keeps going on and going on through out the whole book. It just feels too straightforward.
So Reddit, can you recommend something similar to Cloud Atlas from a story/complexity point of view, but maybe with more modern English? I love movies which play with time - The Prestige, Inception, etc...
My next books I rented from the library are "The Andromeda Strain" and "Jurassic Park". I also was thinking about "World War Z". All these are based on what I read on different reddit posts. Can you talk me out/in of these books?

... keep reading on reddit β‘I guess I should preface this by saying that I havent read the book yet, but I've watched the movie about 8 times. Something about it hits me on a level I can't describe and it makes me intensely emotional, in a good way. The movie is such a rich experience, every time I watch it I see something new.
When I first saw it, it gave me one of the biggest feelings of deja vu I have ever felt in my life. I know a lot of people make fun of this movie, but it's made so well and has a hell of a cast. My one gripe was Tom Hanks' "irish" accent, lol.
If you like cerebral movies, Cloud Atlas is on netiflix right now, please watch it. It changed me for the better.
I'd read the original book as a holiday read from one of those take one, leave one in my hotel at the time in 2009, and it was quite good, if different to my normal sort of books.
In general, though, if we ignore the yellowface controversy, would the length of 172 min in hrs have worked better if they'd split into two movies and made some changes from the source material that weren't too big as a pragmatic adaptation, given how big the book was? It wasn't a huge doorstopper like LOTR, but quite substantially thick as I remember it.
For what it's worth, I enjoyed the film, will re-watch it if networks re-air it, although because it's on television, at least with a digibox you can skip the adbreaks!
I read somewhere that the film was an audience-alienating premise due to having six different plots (although that proved no problem for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, largely due to them being standalone), the yellowface controversy although it later became a cult classic later on.
As it is, I wonder if any other of David Mitchell's works will be adapted to movies or not.
In general, would it have worked better divided into two films and what changes would you have made, in an alternate history, where the film's still released in 2012, but things went differently?
I enjoyed the interview style but probably because of how it flowed relative to the other stories in Cloud Atlas. I like the dystopian futuristic world it described.
Thanks
Hi, I am looking to deploy M10 cluster provided on MongoDB Atlas. While checking out, I noticed Azure is providing 30GB space in comparison to on AWS, in same price.
I am confused here, which one to go with.
Need help with how to decide between them ?
Thanks,

>What precipitates acts? Belief.

>Belief is both prize & battlefield, within the mind & in the mindβs mirror, the world. If we believe humanity is a ladder of tribes, a colosseum of confrontation, exploitation & bestiality, such a humanity is surely brought into being, & history's Horroxes, Boerhaaves & Gooses shall prevail. You & I, the moneyed, the privileged, the fortunate, shall not fare so badly in this world, provided our luck holds. What of it if our consciences itch? Why undermine the dominance of our race, our gunships, our heritage & our legacy? Why fight the βnaturalβ (oh, weaselly word!) order of things?
>
>Why? Because of this:βone fine day, a purely predatory world shall consume itself. Yes, the devil shall take the hindmost until the foremost is the hindmost. In an individual, selfishness uglifies the soul. For the human species, selfishness is extinction.

>If we believe that humanity may transcend tooth & claw, if we believe divers races & creeds can share this world as peaceably as the orphans share their candlenut tree, if we believe that leaders must be just, violence muzzled, power accountable & the riches of the Earth & its Oceans shared equitably, such a world will come to pass. I am not deceived. It is the hardest of worlds to make real. Torturous advances won over generations can be lost by a single stroke of a myopic presidentβs pen or a vainglorious generalβs sword.
