CMV: If your employer requires you to take specific classes or certifications outside normal working hours in order to start/continue working for them, you should be compensated for your time and efforts.

I work in construction in NYC, and in the last year, I've had to complete the following certifications:

-OSHA 30 Training (30 hours)

-Scaffold and Fall Protection (8 hours)

-Drug and Alcohol Awareness (2 hours)

-NY Sexual Harassment class (2 hours)

-Silica Hazard Training (1 hour)

-Coronavirus Prevention and Protection (1 hour)

That's over 40 hours of classes that I was forced to take, on my time, in my house, without any compensation whatsoever. If I don't complete all of these certifications, I am not allowed to work and I not only use employment, I lose my health insurance, and my union will not back me up because "You didn't take the classes we asked you to take". So I'm compelled to do unpaid work after working hours in order to stay employed. I don't think that's right at all.

I believe that if your employer or union is requiring you to take a class or get a certificate after normal working hours, you should be paid for that. It's your time doing a work related task;

Certifications worth completing?

Hi all,

I recently graduated with a degree in Digital Forensics & Security

Long story short this hasn't helped me in getting a role in cyber security / information assurance

I've been looking into course to complete during lockdwon to improve my skills to an acceptable level for an employer, however since looking here I've seen alot of the courses I thought would be good described as unsatisfactory or lacking in proof of any skill. Are there any certifications you would suggest me taking in order to get an entry level role in Cyber? TIA

Free Certifications and IT Conference Registrations (where they usually give out codes for more free certifications)

#####Here's a consolidated list of free certs or conferences you can check out if you're stuck at home and quarantined:

Update 5/20/20: There is a new Microsoft offer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/gnhr4b/fyi_free_microsoft_certification_vouchers/?

Note: this list (below this point) was last edited on 5/6/20 @7pm PST. New content below.

Oracle (Cloud). These certs all not that useful, but hey, I'll basically take anything when it's free. You can take each exam once. Must complete all tests by 5/15/20.

Update: I'm not able to see open exam slots for most of these anymore. It's unlikely you will be able to register for an Oracle exam at this point. Seems theyโ€™re booked up.

Free exams available (on Pearson Vue):

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Associate

I don't have any job experience and I graduated high school last year. It's been a rough year not really find work and getting into a big depression. That's until this virus hit I decided to do something about it and start doing online certificates through Coursera to boost my resume and learn some new things with out college. So this morning I just finished my first certification in negotiation skills it's something I'm very proud of so I posted it to social media because I only wanna share positive things like achievements and what not. That was a huge mistake because a few friends kept telling me in comments or dming me that it's worthless and getting these online certificates won't get me anywhere. Maybe I should grow some balls and not be a pussy but it ready hurt my feelings and felt what I just earned is completely useless and Im wasting time pursuing other certificates, u think they are right because they are all already way more mature and successful then me I don't know how t

What non-college certifications/programs are recognized by the industry enough to get your foot in the door?

Besides having a personal portfolio of projects, what online courses or certification programs are available that aren't apart of being enrolled in a college/university, but are recognized in the field enough where it at least gets a second glance on a resume?

I know this is broad in terms of focus within the field but I am open to all areas as well as the level of difficulty or experience it may require.

Apologies if this has been asked but Googling brought up a lot of fluff and as someone who's outside looking in, its difficult to see whats respected at a professional level.

Edit: I went to college for accounting/chemistry. I would like a career that someone with a computer science degree would be eligible for. Until I am enrolled online and have such a degree, I would like to be working on the right things but there are a lot of promoted programs out there.

Edit: I should have said I have a basic knowledge of programming. I made it past that daunting beginners hump with a few d

Why Do Nearly All Entry-Level Jobs Require Unrealistic Amounts of Experience or Certifications?

After 4 years of University undergrad, 2 years for an M.Sc, and 2 years as a research assistant within the general realm of microbiology/biochemistry/astrobiology, I have been trying get into literally any full time or permanent position I can find within the province of Ontario. However, every single posting at the entry-level demands an unrealistic amount of experience, certifications, or qualifications. Why is this? It does not benefit newcomers to the workforce in any way.

I've had more than my share of education and am sick of working minimum wage jobs not related to my field. I still apply to literally everything I can whether or not I meet the qualifications but in 18 months I've only had a handful of interviews. Does anyone know what the secret is? How does anyone get hired these days? Feel free to vent yourselves if you need to.

Background -

  • Graduated from college in 2019. Currently working as a Quality Assurance Engineer in an organization. Working on non-cloud related stuff.
  • Prior knowledge on cloud - NONE ( Just knew the definition of cloud computing! :P )

For CLF-01

How realistic is learning python and pentesting or ethical hacking from Udemy, then getting certifications, to enter the cyber security field?

I'm a computer science grad, and I studied it mainly to build sites and apps, but I've lost interest in that, and I'm thinking of entering the infosec/cyber security field, as I enjoyed practical networks classes while getting my degree. From going through posts and research, there are some needed certifications, but before trying to get them, is a Udemy course going to be helpful?

  • What resources and/or path advice can you give to a newbie?

  • What's "A day in the life of" someone in cyber security?

  • Is it more theoretical or practical?

  • Also, how realistic is it to freelance in this field?

Are there any professional certifications (PMP, CFA, etc.) that offer practical value?

Really sorry if this is off topic, but I literally no where else on reddit (or web) that thinks like me.

Most people think of a certification as some sort of stepping stone on the career ladder and to get a higher salary. Study X00 hours, get y% increase in salary.

My leanFIRE mentality is that its cheap knowledge, and offers a level of "confidence".

Yes, you could get the same information of reading pdf/coursera and youtube videos, and you don't know how good you are. It'll also cost you a lot more time...

At this in my financial life, I'm willing to drop a few Ks that would better the human experience.

...also I might find some of it fun and even might want to work part time.

Ideas:

  1. CFA level 1. I've read that the full 3 levels of CFA is worth more than master's degree on finance. But it gets really really hard (there is a hard limit on the people allowed to pass). For fun, I like to trade stocks. So having a baseline of knowledge. Also, I could write reports on seekingalp

How I got AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate certification within 20 days

And here we go again. One more down in the book!

On April 15th, I got AWS Cloud Practitioner certified within a week, and if that was not challenging enough for me, I stepped the game up by forcing myself to get the AWS Solutions Architect Associate cert within a month.

I truly believe this was, if not, the toughest exam that Iโ€™ve ever taken. And yes, Iโ€™m including the exams I took in my final years of college. What they say about this certification as one of the top tier IT cert, and one of the toughest, is real. The hype is real! Without any further ado, Iโ€™ll jump straight into my experience, learning materials that I used, and how I did of what I did.

I started my preparation for the exam on April 21st. That very day, I bought the Solutions Architect course by Stephane Maarek on Udemy, the newly crafted course by Adrian Cantrill, practice exams by Jon Bonso, and the free YouTube course of Andrew Brown.

They are listed below: 1.) Ultimate AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associa

Online GIS certifications

Hi there, I just graduated with my BS in environmental studies with a focus in conservation biology. I've done some field biology internships which made me realize I'd much rather work in an office in a big city (with occasional time in the field) as opposed to doing all field work in middle of nowhere in the Western US. I am thinking that focusing on GIS will allow me to stay in this field that I'm passionate about while also allowing me to have the lifestyle I want.

I've been having trouble finding work as a new graduate due to the pandemic, so I'm going to move in with my parents for a bit while I figure out next steps. I want to use this time productively and do some online courses in GIS (and possibly Python) to help me with getting a GIS job in the future. In college I took an intro to GIS course and also did some volunteer GIS projects on the side, but I have some big gaps I want to fill in. I'm trying to find what the GIS certificate gold standard is but I haven't been able t

Use your Covid Crystal Ball. What are good 3-6 month certifications/training programs that will position me to be in demand in our post Covid-economy?

To the extent it matters, I'm mid 30s, in the US, have a BA, and am looking to use my current covid layoff to do a bit of retraining. Assessing tech certifications (I've worked in an office my whole career so am familiar with software, but not formal training) but am unsure which may be best to pursue. Or perhaps e-learning?

r/careerguidance, bestow your wisdom upon me!

Edit: thank you for all the responses. Let me add a few prompts to help the discussion:

  • Will there be an increased demand for e-learning? Where might that trigger job demand?

  • Increase in need for e-commerce. Should I get an Amazon Web Services certification?

  • Are there any programs or certifications to get a job in supporting web infrastructure or helping people work from home?

The Wi-Fi Alliance is issuing Wi-Fi 6 certification to devices that don't meet Wi-Fi 6 requirements. Check device certificate before buying

TL,DR: What this means in practical terms is it severely complicates consumer ability to check router/AP theoretical performance independently of OEM claims. In others words, it aids and abets OEM deception. This is unconscionable from a certification organization.

Like all good r/hardware folks I often window shop products I have no intention of buying myself just so I know what to recommend to people when they ask.

I'm an enterprise AP guy through-and-through, but most people ask about routers. As such and as a continuation of last week's max theoretical throughput derivation exercise, I decided to find Wi-Fi 6 certified US-available routers.

The Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi 6 announcement implies the following are the requirements for certification:

Any certification or training in 6 months for salary of 50k or more in Los Angeles region?

Hi Reddit.

Former teacher here.

COVID-19 hit hard and now I am staying home with unemployment.

I got burnt out after 7 years of teaching, so now I think it is a great opportunity to change career with unemployment kicking in.

I have a bachelor's in Biology and I need around 3k a month after taxes to survive (mortage, cars, insurance, student loan, cell phone, utilities)

Are there any certification or training in 6 months that could land me to a career with 45-50k salary?

Also, something I could do in a long run, I am only 30.

5 years after joining Reddit, I finally got my PS certification!

5 years ago today was the day i joined Reddit, and as you can tell by my name, i was kind of interested in design. I started out posting and contributing on /r/photoshopbattles and /r/PhotoshopRequest.

This was my senior year of high school and while taking a graphic design class, I was given the opportunity to take the certification test for not just Photoshop, but also Illustrator and After Effects. I am super excited to announce that i passed every single one, first try.

I really couldn't have done it without this community and would love to thank you all for helping me get here. I know it may not seem like a lot to most of you, but this is a huge accomplishment for me.

Passed TensorFlow Developer Certification

Hi,

I have passed this week the TensorFlow Developer Certificate from Google. I could not find a lot of feedback here about people taking it so I am writing this post hoping it will help people who want to take it.

The exam contains 5 problems to solve, part of the code is already written and you need to complete it. It can last up to 5 hours, you need to upload your ID/Passport and take a picture using your webcam at the beginning, but no one is going to monitor what you do during those 5 hours. You do not need to book your exam beforehand, you can just pay and start right away. There is no restriction on what you can access to during the exam.

I strongly recommend you to take Coursera's TensorFlow in Practice Specialization as the questions in the exam are similar to the exercises you can find in this course. I had previous experience with TensorFlow but anyone with a dec

YSK that if youโ€™re looking for work but donโ€™t have a college degree, many engineering firms have field teams that perform specific field tests that donโ€™t require degrees. These jobs can pay well and lead to certifications that can be a career building block.

For instance, I work in the field of Cathodic Protection. We are the people that ensure underground metallic pipelines do not corrode and fail. The industry is huge (and growing) and no one seems to know about it. I began as an entry level field tech just taking soil samples and now 6 years later, landed a 6 figure job with 3 certifications Iโ€™ve completed along the way (no college degree). This is obviously anecdotal but the fact is that there are many ways in the trades specifically that one can build a rewarding career. Iโ€™ve told every new hire who shows up and thinks this is just a job that you will absolutely get out of this, what you put in to it. Feel free to DM me if youโ€™re looking for work, Iโ€™ve made a lot of great contacts and can try my best to help out.

EDIT: Iโ€™m genuinely happy those who have reached out are interested. Iโ€™ll address every message I get (as time allows) and try my best to help!

If I wanted to complete the CompTIA certifications up through CySA+ and PenTest+ (including ITF+, A+, Net+, Sec+), what would be the best online courses or resources to teach myself how to complete these?

For reference, I know a bit about computers and I think I could pass ITF+ and A+ certs, but Iโ€™d rather do some sort of interactive course or self-taught tutorial to learn what I need to learn to earn these certifications. A quick reminder about helmet certifications.

Hi guys, Flegrant here.

I wanted to talk to you guys all about the growing number of riders who have been picking up Ruroc helmets for the sake of the "chin bar" and full-face protection. Even though I am, I hate being a stickler for safety, it makes me feel like a prude. But this has been a glaring issue for me recently. Ruroc helmets (specifically the RG1-DX) look exceptionally cool to some, BUT, they are only specifically designed for snow sports. Why should we care as Onewheel riders? Because of EN-1077a and EN-1078. Now, you might claim "What's wrong with that? Those are safety standards!" However, those numbers tell a really important story. EN-1077 and EN-1078 are European helmet standards, EN-1077 is specifically for snowsports, EN-1078 is for bicycles. We're just going to flat out ignore EN-1077 because it is the snow standard. Not the street standard. EN-1078 is listed for "skating, rollerblading and bicycling" as a general standard for helmets in "general use" not bombing a

Many thanks for the 6 Months of AWS certification journey

Whew it's been a crazy 6 months or so, with passing all the AWS Certifications. Here's been my journey that ended on Wednesday:

  • Nov - SA Associate
  • Jan - ML Specialty

SA Pro was definitely the hardest exam I've ever taken. Probably couldn't have done without all these resources available:

  • Jon Bonso - The gold standard of practice exams
  • Eissa from DolfinEd - Another gold standard, plugged up all the knowledge gaps
  • ACG forum - Love all the activities here, and all the extra practice problems along the way
  • Whitepapers, Premium Support knowledge, Services Q&A - boring but basically has all the answers to the exam here
  • this subreddit - The source of encouragement; we're all in this together!

Is Kubernetes certification worth it

For someone with >5 years of experience in devops(but not in kubernetes) - is having a CKA or CKAD certification useful? I think to gain knowledge - professional experience is the best. However I was wondering if this certification gives any extra benefits.

What are the options for mid-career online courses and certification?

I am a mid-career professional interested in moving into digital transformation/analytics consulting (e.g. BCG Gamma or McKinsey Digital) or digital transformation project management in big companies. I am finishing up my MBA in an M7 school and have basic knowledge about python and machine learning, and looking to upskill this recession.

  1. What are some good online courses to better my data science skills/concepts (e.g. in python and machine learning)?
  2. Are there any certifications recognised by the industry?
