Anyone have CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit? What have your experiences been?

Hey everybody,

I am looking to drop Xfinity for CenturyLink, but I wanted to hear what the community's experience has been with them before I do.

Are the speeds and reliability of service better with CenturyLink than Xfinity? What about the set up?

Thanks for your help!

CenturyLink Gigabit subscribers in the Central District, how it the speed and reliability of Giganit in the neighborhood?

While working from home (these troubled times...) we’ve had a number of service disruptions and speed failures from our cable internet through Wave. (And calling their customer service phone line is a nightmare!) I’ve seen people on the sub sing praise to Gigabit, but they’ve also said your neighborhood can determine your speed. We’re right near 23rd and Cherry... can any CD neighbors share your experience with Gigabit?

Edit: We’ve pulled the triggerβ€”fiber installation is scheduled for Thursday. Thank you all for your comments!

CenturyLink installed equipment on my house... But I don’t have CenturyLink.

CenturyLink installed equipment on my house (in Florida). ... but I don't have CenturyLink.

I was chatting with my neighbor about the grassy area between our two houses, when he mentioned "burying the cable." Huh? He pointed to the side of my house.

Evidently, while I was out, CenturyLink technicians walked up and installed a box on the side of my house, ran a cable through the yard, and dipped out. (EDIT: Not near my house, not next to my house, actually ON it. As in they drilled into the siding and installed it connected to my line.)

I have never used CenturyLink, nor does anyone in my family. No idea what's going on.

I spent more than 2 hours calling various CenturyLink numbers (most of which were dead ends) and getting transferred around.

One agent actually asked me if I'd like to "go ahead and sign up for the service" since I "have the equipment now anyway." Bruh.

Another agent told me that they cannot send technicians to my house to remove it because...

...because I'm not a customer.

Finally, I reached a department that deals with damages. They assured me that a technician would be out promptly to remove the equipment. That was 3 days ago.

Ever since, I've gotten repeated text messages asking me to "finish setting up my service." In the message, a local number is provided. When I call the number, I just get a weird error message saying that I cannot be connected.

At what point am I allowed to tear this shit off my house?

If I get a bill from CenturyLink, I'm going to lose my effing mind.

Edited to add that it’s not just near my house or in my yard, it was drilled into the siding and physically connected to my line.

Switched from Xfinity to CenturyLink fiber (OCC area)

Just wanted to share my experience about moving away from Xfinity, who I had almost no issues or downtime with for years, to CenturyLink fiber internet

I don't have any experience with the reliability of my new setup, but from a speed perspective, the fiber of course just blows Xfinity away:

1ms ping, 940mbps down, 940mbps up (wired)

3ms ping, 500mbps down, 600mbps up (wireless)

...for only $65/mo, which is apparently a locked-in price

I'd gotten some sales letters about internet from CenturyLink recently but ignored them because of all the things I'd heard about their other internet service. The techs said it's only been in my area (west end of OCC) for about a year.

Definitely something to look into if it's available for your address! The install didn't take long at all and the tech called in the morning to give an approximate arrival time instead of wondering when they might show up during the 8 hour window.

CenturyLink won't let me cancel

Singing to the choir on this one. I was a customer for 3 years and not on a contract anymore. I canceled my CenturyLink service on July 7th. My billing cycle was June 16th through July 16th and I was assured my service would be disconnected July 17th and my final bill would be $70. Low and behold here I am receiving a bill for August. I have called multiple times, spent over an hour on hold only to be hung up on and told my service wasn't cancelled. I've tried to give them my reference number for the cancellation several times and they won't accept it. I've worked hard to rebuild my credit and I don't want to let them tank me. I already reported them to the consumer financial protection bureau and received a response that they don't accept complaints for CenturyLink. I also submitted a consumer complaint to State of Oregon Department of Justice. Feeling at a loss with this one.

Update: Called again and spoke with a nice woman who confirmed it was disconnected and that the billing was all messed up. She added a credit to the account to counteract the charge. I kept reference numbers for everything and will continue to monitor for anything suspicious. Its hard to be nice when really frustrated but I tried to be as kind as possible, I take calls for a corporation as well and I know how crummy it is to be yelled at for things out of my control, and I'm much more likely to want to help a nice person than somebody yelling at me. I don't trust that this is over, but at least the lady today was decent.

Getting Centurylink DSL to work with all Eero Features

I'm currently on Centurylink DSL (60/5) which only supports PPPoE at the moment. Been trying to get my Eero to connect either though transparent bridge or DMZ with no avail. I have tried following the guides previously posted by other users but they appear to be for Fiber networks. My modem/router hardware is an Actiontec C1900A supplied by them.

Steps I took for Bridge Mode:

  • Enter the Actiontec modem (using the IP) and enter "advanced setup" tab
  • Enter "WAN settings" on the side bar and under "ISP Protocol" select "Transparent Bridging". My PPP Auto connect is set to Enable, Noo PPP credential set to Disable. IP Addressing Type set to Dynamic IP. DNS Type set to Dynamic DNS.
  • After a reboot, the modem never connects to my Internet and I have to get Centurylink to manually reset the machine so I can access it again. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here, possibly an odd step that needs to be done for this particular modem? (my PPPoE credential are correct and I have received them).

Step I attempt to enable DMZ hosting

  • Enter the Actiontec modem (using the IP) and enter "advanced setup" tab
  • Enter "DMZ Hosting" on the side bar and under "Security" select the Eero hardwired to the modem (Have 3 cupcakes and 2 are wirelessly connected to the hardwired one).
  • Apply and reboot. The Eero never seems to get connected to the internet. Even rebooted the Eero. I think the Centurylink help site maybe missing a step? Any insight would be great.

Would really like to use SQM and Homekit on the Eero so any help is appreciated. I did try calling support and in severals weeks I have called I have been put on hold. Centurylink does not seem to know what to do either. Double NAT is not a possibility as several online games exhibit extremely high ping while under this configuration.

Just set up CenturyLink Fiber but getting very low speeds on wired connection

A couple days ago a tech came out to set up centurylink fiber (940 mbps) at my house. Unfortunately, he left before I could ask any questions or test the internet on my computer.

Since then, the highest I've managed to get on a wired speed test (windows app, not through web browser) is ~150 mbps down, and usually it is even lower than that.

  • I double checked and confirmed that the ethernet cable I'm using is cat-6.
  • I've confirmed that my network interface card speed is 1 gbps.
  • I've logged into the modem GUI on my web browser and it says the downstream/upstream rate is 1000/1000 mbps.
  • The modem/router I'm using is the Zyxel C3000Z which centurylink provided.

If anyone has any troubleshooting advice, I would greatly appreciate it! Please let me know if there's any other relevant information I can provide.

CenturyLink blocking port 53

We spent the better part of a morning clearing a ticket caused by a local ISP blocking port 53, now that I am cooled down I am looking for a permanent solution (not DoH).

At this point, it's one endpoint out of hundreds, if this gets to be more pervasive, we'll move a caching DNS server to our VPN - until the jerks block the VPN...

What does everyone think of adding this line to our startup script:

nslookup a.root-servers.net 8.8.8.8 | find "198.41.0.4" && wmic nicconfig where (IPEnabled=TRUE and DHCPEnabled=TRUE) call SetDNSServerSearchOrder ()

It checks for DNS resolution and switches to DNS provided by DHCP server, we'll follow up with a notification to the end-user so they know their DNS has been hi-jacked .

Centurylink is worthless.

I've been trying to activate my new service for 3 days. The humans I talk to on the phone are useless and keep giving me information for my old account and can't seem to fathom the idea that I'm trying to start new service. Eventually they "transfer me to someone who can help" and drop the call.

While trying to activate the modem, it asks me to identify myself. But it won't accept the account number and billing zip code I enter. Eventually it locks me out for trying too many times. The account number I'm entering is the one they fucking emailed to me when my order was confirmed. The zip code is the same zip code I've lived in for 6 years.

And just for funsies, their website has not worked (at least for me) since January. It just says "an error has occured, please try again in 15 minutes" forever.

These people are the least helpful people I've ever dealt with, and it's impossible to work with them or their site or their equipment. I'm cancelling on Monday. Don't waste your time or money.

CenturyLink Gigabit DL Speeds for the last month

Its to be expected that with more users on the network the CenturyLink infrastructure would bend a bit but lately it almost seems broken and not during peak hours- Just using this is a soundboard to see if other users in the same boat.

When I originally had CL installed, I was at 900/600 with the same hardware, I am currently sitting at 90download and somehow still 600 upload. This was tested last night at 9pm, so I figured I'd try this morning- Im at 87DL/569UL. (9:20a 6/12/20)

Its pushing out about 20mbs to my 2.4ghz wireless network, and can basically no longer support a single chromecast in the house.

I restarted the modem and went into the GUI and everything looks default, and also passes the "Line Test" while saying it was recieving 1000/1000 mpbs.

I'll drop the issue right now if everyone in the area is subjected to the same speeds at the moment, but wondering if anyone else has run into this speed sag and how they overcame it-

Thanks a ton from someone who has started using 4G on his phone at home again because its faster than his "gigabit internet"

Anyone else discover a better rural option? Wondering if using my phone service would just be...at least I can get online with my phone, you know? Oy vey.

Is Centurylink Fiber legit?

They’re advertising $65/mo with free installation and modem. Is it a scam? I heard people signed up but the tech never showed up to install. I also read that it’s unstable. I’m looking for faster upload speed but with Comcast you only get 30mbps for $100/mo. It seems that options are limited.

Centurylink gigabit modem pricing (if any)

Just got gigabit service installed today, and they setup a C3000A modem. Coming from 15 years of Comcast, it's unclear to me what the pricing/ownership of this device is. Is it a rental that will incur additional charges a la Comcast's crap? If not, does CL want it back if I ever end service? Or is it a gift?

Planning to replace it with PPPOE on something else, so if there are additional fees I'll try to return it.

Have CenturyLink's peering issues been resolved?

How have your recent connection speeds been to actual destination sites/services (rather than local speed tests)?

I'm about to move within Salt Lake City to a place that offers both Google Fiber and CenturyLink's gigabit fiber-to-the-modem service. All things being equal I'd go with Google, but there's actually a serious difference in the everything-included monthly price I'm being offered -- $70 vs. $50, so $240/yr.

My hesitation (apart from notorious customer service and general evilness) is that users have reported experiencing poor connectivity with endpoints outside CenturyLink's network. There's a lot of complaining out there about bad peering and routing letting the service down.

What I've read, though, comes from the height of the lockdown crunch or from before CenturyLink bought Level 3 and had the chance to exploit its massive reach. So I'm wondering if CL customers' true end-to-end performance now looks more or less like what is advertised.

CenturyLink (national?) outages

We have a 10G wave down in the DFW market as well as no access to https://controlcenter.centurylink.com (that site will load but not the login portion, business-signin.centurylink.com (155.70.44.20)). Site doesn't work from ATT,CenturyLink,Comcast, etc. Our Centurylink DIA that's part of our BGP mix is perfectly fine even upstream and we are at normal traffic levels.

Response from account team varied from non-existent to "have you put in a control center ticket". We are at half redundancy on DCI so just curious if anyone else is experiencing CenturyLink issues and if they have any updates.

I'm trying to set up my NAS in my kid's house for connecting to while I'm traveling. The NAS was easy to set up and connect to but the ZyXel C3000Z modem/router is giving me fits. It refuses to play nice with the UPNP router configuration returning a warning that "Two or more routers were found on your network" and then it says something about bridge mode. There is only the one modem.

Have you experienced this and if so, how'd your handle it?

centurylink packet loss and disconnections in seattle

Hi, I have centurylink fiber 100mbps service and have experienced terrible service for the last two weeks. I've had 2 service techs out to my house a month ago and things were fine. Nothing has changed and the last two weeks have been horrendous.

I've plugged in a laptop tonight directly into my centurylink router via cat5 to provide evidence to share. The following is what I did and the results. Is there a better way to localize that centurylink is garbage?

Spectrum or CenturyLink?

Which internet provider do you recommend for life in Walla Walla?
I do a lot of gaming and watch all my TV on stream (netflix etc). CenturyLink seems like a nice price but the location I am at only provides up to 3Mbps which... does not seem enough? But CenturyLink states that with DSL it is your own dedicated line where as with Spectrum you are sharing the connection via Cable with your neighbors which means the speed can decrease depending how many people are on it.

CenturyLink installed equipment on my house. ... I don't have CenturyLink.

I have never used CenturyLink, nor does anyone in my family. No idea what's going on.

I spent more than 2 hours calling various CenturyLink numbers (most of which were dead ends) and getting transferred around.

One agent actually asked me if I'd like to "go ahead and sign up for the service" since I "have the equipment now anyway." Dafuq?

Another agent told me that they cannot send technicians to my house to remove it because...

...because I'm not a customer.

Finally, I reached a department that deals with damages. They assured me that a technician would be out promptly to remove the equipment. That was 3 days ago.

Ever since, I've gotten repeated text messages asking me to "finish setting up my service." In the message, a local number is provided. When I call the number, I just get a weird error message saying that I cannot be connected.

If you're a CenturyLink customer, how? That's the whole question: How? Also, why??

At what point am I allowed to tear this shit off my house?

If I get a bill from CenturyLink, I'm going to lose my effing mind.
