The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low carb diets.

It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain.

Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has some health benefits.

Different types of ketogenic diets

There are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including:

  • Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low carb, moderate protein and high fat diet. It typically contains 70% fat, 20% protein, and only 10% carbs.
  • Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high carb days.
  • Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.
  • High protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs.

Diabetes is a very serious chronic disease suffered by millions of people worldwide.

When you digest a bit of food, it is broken down into it main components... carbs, proteins and fats. These components are then broken down further in your digestive system and released into to your blood-stream which delivers them around your body.

Your energy comes from glucose. Glucose is just a simple sugar. But it is your body's primary source of energy.

Most glucose comes from digesting the sugar and starch in carbohydrates which you get from food such as rice, pasta, grains, breads, potatoes, fruits and some vegetables. The glucose produced by digestion in your stomach is absorbed into your bloodstream which delivers it to your body's cells.

Glucose is the fuel for your cells... it powers your movements, thoughts and just about everything else you do.

In order to power your cells, glucose has to get into them. It can only do this with the help of insulin.

Insulin is a hormone (a type of chemical). It is produced by your pancreas. The pancreas releases insulin into your bloodstream where it travels around your body and meets up with glucose on the same trip. The purpose of insulin is to enable glucose to enter your cells.

Forward: As a recently diagnosed type-1 diabetic, I've obviously had to make some dramatic changes to my diet, and have spent more than a few hours online trying to find the "perfect" easy and filling foods for diabetics.

So something I hope could benefit you and this reddit community would be a master list. I submit carb free-low carb foods, and please, feel more than free to add whatever you want to the list. Hopefully we can make a nice and easy "go-to".

Quick note, everything that is labelled "low" has a small to nearly moderate amount of carbs. Please remember to always check before eating no matter what.


-Eggs (almost zero): Hard boiled, Cheese or meat omelets, scrambled

-Pork: Bacon, Sausage, Pork Rinds, Bunless Hotdog

-Beef: Steak, Hamburger Patty, Stew Meat, Meatballs Without Sauce

-Seafood: Salmon, Tuna, Catfish, Trout, Sardines, Shellfish (low)

-Poultry: Chicken, Turkey, Duck, Hen, Chicken Bone Broth

Ultimate Overall Health Juice Recipe?

Just got into juicing for health reasons. Im 19 and I am extremely pre-disposed to diabetes. My father is diabetic, his father is borderline diabetic and his mother (my great grandmother) died because of diabetes. Some thing tells me, I am probably next in line (Unless I take care of my diet).

I actually already eat a pretty good diet, but I don't get enough veggies and fruits in. I made my first juice last night.

I used :

  • Carrots
  • Kale
  • Celery
  • 1 Full Beet
  • 1 Full Lemon
  • a thumb amount of ginger
  • 1 green apple

I'm looking to try and juice at least 4-5 servings of veggies everyday and i'll be eating the rest. What is your over-all health juice you drink everyday? It would be nice if it tasted good but i honestly don't even really care much about that. I just want the health benefits.

Anything definately including carrots and beets please.

This happened several weeks after Flabpotamus first graced us with her prescence. I needed to get some blood tests done, so I figured, why not go to the place where I work?

>I had not been working very many shifts since Flabpotamus arrived, as I had exams, so I hadn’t had much to do with her since that first day.

She shut the door and I realised this room was really very very tiny and the small amount of air that remained once most was displaced by her massive bulk, was, well, putrid. It smelt like a pig with diabetic ulcers had shat itself and then died, the door had been locked and sealed, and it had been left here over the weekend with the heating on. In summer. Curious, I peered under the bed to see if the pig might still be there. Nope, it became obvious once Flabpotamus moved toward me and raised her arm to get some blood taking paraphernalia, that the stench emanated form her many cheesy rolls, and quite probably unwiped butt crack. It was also notable that her uniform, which she spilled a small amount of gravy on the first time I saw her, had not been washed. Possibly ever.

She got me to sit on the chair, and to her credit, was quite methodical about her work. Her desk was neat, she checked all my details and prepared her equipment.

After she took my blood (which she seemed competent at, although to be fair I have awesome veins due to many years of sports) I was feeling a little sick and lightheaded due to the odour more than the blood taking itself.

>“Do yew want a jellybeen?” she asked, offering me a huge jar of the aforementioned beans, "Yew are not eating enuff!"

>“No, I’m fine thanks,” I said.

>“Okay. I’m going to have a few,” she said.” I’m a bit tired, my blood sugah must be low because of my diabeetus.”

> And she removed a giant handful of lollies from the jar and munched away. A small river of technicolour drool escaped the corner of her mouth.

The following day I again had reason to enter her lair on official business – a request form from a doctor, and noticed that the jar, which had yesterday contained about 1 kg of jelly beans, today contained 1 kg of jube type sweets.

Avocado. Avocado is a very nourishing food and an excellent body builder. Avocados are rich in B vitamins and dietary fiber. They are very high in potassium, which makes them excellent for the cardiovascular system. Potassium is a wonderful mineral for regulating blood pressure. Avocados are also good for anemia and nervous disorders and excellent for maintaining a healthy blood sugar level. Banana. Bananas are another food very high in potassium, making them a good medicinal food. They are a great energy food.
