Should I(32f) leave my marriage with my D&D-addicted spouse(30/they)?

Sorry my timeline is a little fuzzy here, pandemic time is weird time. I hope this isn't too long.

I desperately do not want this marriage to fail.

Context: I am a theatrical producer. I produce my own plays that I write. I have hustled and worked insanely hard to get where I am. Almost everyone I've ever dated has really been in it for the stage time. As such, I have found myself in several abusive situations, made worse by the fact that my single mother and I had an emotionally incestuous relationship (not physically sexual) that I go to therapy to overcome. Because of my childhood abuse, I have a severe emotional delay, that manifests as a bubbly personality and extreme naivete. I cannot tell when someone is lying unless I see evidence of it somehow. I just trust. I have always loved the idea of being married. And taken care of a little, tbh.

I met my spouse, "L", three years ago at one of my shows. It was the second they had attended. A mutual friend introduced us. We fell in love really quickly, with some (I thought overcome-able) red flags I took note of. They seemed entranced by me. We had everything in common. They were fascinated and fascinating and I fell hard.

But the slightest red flags....

Example: two weeks in, we're in my room at 1am, and they say, 'I want you to be my girlfriend but I'm not sure if I can give up men.' Now, I don't think I was the appropriate audience for this conversation but in my new-relationship-poor-boundaries-walking-on-eggshells place, I tried to engage in conversation, but it was weird. Like, they said that, and I replied something like, 'Oh, well, what are you feeling?', I'm not sure, but then.... they were silent for ten minutes. I wasn't sure what to do. Then they answered. Then I answered. Then a fifteen-minute pause. Etc. Until 6am. It was awful.

At the same time, my assigned-male-at-birth partner had been on a journey of self-discovery since well before I met them and had gone through a traumatic breakup, so while I didn't enjoy communicating in that way, I just thought it must be an extra tender subject and it didn't happen again for a couple of months.

They told me they were in love with me and thought they wanted to marry and move in one day.

Then, shortly afterward, we were in the shower together, and starting to get to it, when they blurt out, 'I'm having second thoughts about ever marrying you or moving in.'

I asked, 'why?' and, you guessed it, ten-minute pause. While we're both naked. In the

Winning SPAC DD #3: Delwinds SPAC (DWIN) and merger speculation

Welcome to my 3rd DD on r/SPACs.

I'm happy to present another SPAC, DWIN, that is going to be a winning deal based on the management. I'll be upfront and tell you that this DD, just like all my other DDs, is about researching the management (background, achievements, connections) and why they will bring a great company to merge (as well as industry speculation). They haven't gotten enough attention primarily because of their trust size i.e. $175 Millions. And hey, a small trust size isn't always a bad thing, there's always a great play in them. Disclaimer: I have 15,000 shares of DWIN's warrants (ticker: DWIN/WS) and I will be holding them throughout merger (and then I'll decide based on market conditions if I wanna sell).

tl;dr provided at the end

>Side Note: Before I proceed, I need to address something that kept bugging me throughout this week. My #2 DD's top comment from u/MostonDreams was that I stole it from Discord. However, thanks to the mod, u/Masculiknitty, who asked for proof. As it turns out, it was a completely baseless allegation and they never provided any proof. I personally write all my DDs after hours of research and usually spend 4-5 hours making sure they are easy to read. If I do quote something, I would always provide my source. Feel free to follow me and support me. I plan on posting my DDs every week (this is all I do for living tbh).

Management

The main guy in DWIN is Andrew Poole. He's one of those all-star managers that have been in and around the financial banking world. He started off by working at SwissRe (globally giant insurance company), moved to SAC Capital for couple years, and finally moved up the ladder to join Diamondback Capital Management (AUM: ~$12BN). He served there as a portfolio manager but was pulled into Scoria Capital (AUM: ~$1BN) as a Partner. Okay, that's all you would find on the prospectus but now let's talk about the real deal.

DWIN is actually his second SPAC, the first one was the Tiberius Acquisition Corporation that ended up merging with International General Insurance Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: IGIC) in March 2020. Guess what else happened in March 2020 in US markets? Everything tanked! If you're like the majority of people, you're going to strongly judge them based on their previous SPAC performance howeve

DD: Historical effect of moving from SmallCap to MidCap S&P Index and why it contributed to CLF's fall.

After seeing this great DD on CLF small cap share ownership by u/faiz_shah, I decided to better research what happens to stocks that move from the S&P SmallCap 600 to the S&P MidCap 400. The results quickly surprised me and correlate a bit to $CLF's behavior these last few days. For a quick legend of the upcoming graphs:

  • The title of each section links to the press release of a stock transition press release.
  • The cross mark on each chart is right before the press release went out about the index transition.
  • The big bar of sudden activity represents the day before the change is in effect.

I hate my ADHD brain.

I hate my stupid ADHD brain. I hate how I have to fight for every little thing I'm interested in, how I have to fight to consciously maintain an exhausting and excessive routine of discipline, recovery, self reflection, self care, and socialization.

I'm just some guy, but I can't exist like one. I have to exist like a soldier so I don't end up on the streets. I have to exist like a soldier so I can enjoy things. I have to exist like a soldier to be stable. I hate it. I wish I could go on leave, and not always be deployed to the front lines trying to kill off bad habits and slip-ups. But if I leave I'm down for weeks, and I have to fight so much harder to get back to where I was.

Why do I have to work this hard to basically still be a fuck up, in comparison to people who I know are competent? I hate knowing that no matter what I'm interested in, no matter what career I'm in, I will always be a low performer, a mistake-maker, not worth coming to or relying on. I feel I like am never going to advance in my career or social life because I am simply too slow to respond. Too slow to learn. Incapable of winning. Incapable of being a value-add.

People on this board say that my brain isn't wired in the same way as an NT, but I have no idea how to apply that fact to my life. I can't become a carpenter or live off of a trust fund, or my parents. I have to grind alongside every other NT in NT-oriented spaces. I have to hide my disorder because it's a competitive disadvantage. It seems like I just have to get used to this war. It's going to be one for the rest of my life.

The Game of Life

"The Game of Life" (text, audio) is a really good lecture that discusses the use of the law. I really like it because it is a good explanation of how this Law is at use every moment of our lives, which I think is important to realize and understand when we are first learning about these teachings. We might think we can "turn off" our creative abilities, but we never do – we are always creating.

>The game of life, like every game, is played within the framework of certain rules, and any violation of those rules carries a penalty. You and I are playing this game from morning to night, and should therefore learn its rules in order to play it well.
>
>Ecclesiastes gives us this rule: "Even in your thought do not curse the king, or in your bed chamber curse the rich, for a bird will carry your voice or some winged creature tell the matter." And Mark gives us another, as: "Whatever you desire, believe that you have received it and you will." If you must believe you have received your desire in order to attain it, then you must start your game by believing it is finished. You must feel yourself into and partaking of your goal. And you must persist in that feeling in order to achieve it.

This is the simplest explanation of the law, in my opinion: believe you have received it in imagination and you will experience it in the physical.

This is one of the rules for the game of life, according to Neville. The next is that you must persist in the imaginal act and not concern yourself with how it comes to pass in the physical world.

>Now, another rule is said in this manner: "Cast your bread upon the water and you will find it after many days." In other words, do not be concerned as to how it is going to happen - just do it. This statement hasn't a thing to do with doing good as the world defines the word. Jesus was a carpenter. The word means one who produces from seed - as a flower, a tree, the earth. The word, 'bread' in the statement: "Cast your bread upon the waters," means to devour; to consume. Water is a euphemism for semen, that living water which carries the sperm of man. The creative act is psychological, not physical; yet the intentions are the same. You must cast your bread upon the waters with passion! ***You must be consumed with the desire and literally on fire with love for its possession, for an inte

Did i make a mistake? (Union) carpenter

Did I make a mistake (union)

I just quit the company I was working for. The one that helped get me indentured in the union. I had 0 experience and they took me in. I’m now a second period apprentice that has literally been taught zero carpentry jobs. I have only helped lath, and clean. Normally this is not a problem. I told them, “work is work” and that I am just happy to have a job. I am always at work, being proactive, anticipating the jobs needs and getting the tools and materials before they ask for it and cleaning as the day go on. The last month, because we are busy they split the crew into different parts of the building. I’m working with one journeyman on one side of the building and another 3 journeyman are working the opposite end. I keep our side tidy and clean, and at the end of the day or when I have time I will go over to the other side and help them clean and get matieral as needed. But there are no effort of cleaning on their end by themselves. I clean it without fuss, but the foreman started coming down hard on me about cleanliness. I still stuck by the company after being promised I was going to start working with the carpenters 2 months ago, but understood wholeheartedly that business needs change. Last week I decided I’ve had enough. I was exposed to the coronavirus and needed to get tested. The journeyman told me not to tell anyone and just keep working. I told the owner and the foreman I may have been exposed and need to get tested. I was off work for 3 days before I got the results.

The kicker to all this and what pushed me over the edge. After exceeding the hours needed and going into my second period. I still do not have any of my benefits. I called the trust fund and they told me my hours haven’t been getting reported and only shows I’ve worked a total of 200 hours.

Did I make a mistake quitting that company? I need to call the union hall and get put on the wait list, but I’m afraid I made a mistake

My cousin (45F) stole my grandma (90F) in every sense of the word. (LONG)

Hi friends. This is going to be a long one. I decided to use my main account because I ain’t scurred! This situation is so incredibly messed up. I was initially writing this to post on r/legaladvice, but began rambling and realized this is much more than that.

My grandfather passed in 2013 and my grandmother was unfit to live alone. She (once again) became a raging alcoholic. My parents had to break down her front door after she wasn’t answering her phone and found her unconscious on the ground profusely bleeding from her head. At that point they all agreed she couldn’t live alone anymore and had to either go into assisted living or live with my parents. She had no interest in going into assisted living and asserted that only neglected parents go there among many other negative sentiments. My parents agreed to have her move into their home. They wanted to give her their master bedroom on the first floor and they would move upstairs. However, my grandma wanted an addition put onto their house because she was used to living in a very large house and wanted her own space. My parents figured fair enough, they have acreage and she was willing to pay for it. To save her money, my dad did all of the architectural work. He made about 4 different blueprints for the addition because my grandma kept wanting more and more. At this point my Dad became apprehensive because of the strange layout the house would have and how it was essentially now a duplex. The addition ended up being the size of their current home of 30+ years. But, for his mother in law, he digressed.

Building began and my parents were there every single step of the way. They arranged everything while also reserving a lot of jobs for my dad to save my grandma money. My dad is a master carpenter among many other things pertaining to building a home so he did about $160,000 worth of work for free. My grandmother ended up spending about $250,000 on the addition, if that’s any indication as to how big that monstrosity is.

The agreement that was in place before any ground was broken was that it was a gift to my parents when my grandma eventually passed. My parents were concerned about the major increase in property taxes among many other utilities. This has been their home since the late 80’s and they did not ever want to lose it. My grandma agreed to pay the difference in the bills and assured them that once she passed my mom would receive half of her estate which would be plenty to cover any bills.

[Trivia] Anno 1800 specialists and their real-world equivalents (a full list!)

I've been playing through 1800 again recently, and while hunting legendary specialists I noticed that some of the game data has development names for them listed, which often point to the specialists being based on people or items that existed in the 19th or early-20th centuries, or in some cases references to movies, Youtubers or characters from earlier Anno games. Really cool aspect of the game, and great work by whoever worked on this at Ubisoft. I decided it might be interesting to collate a quick list to fill the time while we patiently wait for Land of Lions.

The list is split into 4 parts: Specialists, Inventions, Specialists based on Youtuber content creators, and specialists which seem like references.

Book Review: The Tower of Fear, by Glen Cook

The last temple of the dread god Gorloch is under siege. Nakar the Abomination, the sorcerous undead warlord, waits in his tower for the right moment to sweep away the invading armies of Herod with a devastating wizardry.

But lo! At the climax of the battle, right when Nakar intended to strike, the heroic assassin Alah-eh-din Beyh has snuck into Gorloch's stronghold. The avatars of Light and Darkness battle with blade and magic even as the Herodians breach the gates. Nakar and Beyh slay each other just as the city-state of Qushmarrah falls.

And now, with that fantasy climax achieved, the actual story may begin.

The Tower of Fear is a 1989 fantasy drama by Glen Cook, and it is an absolutely fascinating exploration of conflict theory in action. There are anywhere from seven to ten factions (depending on how you count) in post-war Qushmarrrah who all want incompatible futures and are willing to get their hands dirty to win. Conflict is such an ingrained part of life that it doesn't occur to anybody to apply mistake theory in any capacity. Only once in the whole book is a character able to sit down and truly think about whether their grand plan is good policy for the city as a whole, and the moment he does his compatriots turn on him. One aspect of the novel that pleases me greatly is that everybody involved has a historical counterpart to use as a reference point, which lets you fill in details about their culture and their look and feel, which never never actually given to us in writing. Herod is a Rome analogue, the Gorloch dead-enders resemble some manner of Phoenician Moloch worshippers, the native Qushmarrans are vaguely Jewish with Qushmarrah being a picaresque version of Jerusalem under Roman occupation, and the Dartar allies to Herod are vaguely Bedouin Arabs. The zealots of yore provide inspiration for the insurgent group of Qushmarran patriots seeking to take back their city.

Six years after Nakar the Abomination died, these groups all scheme and fight to secure the future of Qushmarrah. The mercenary Dartars and the Herodians are allies, but each is trying to outmaneuver the other into doing the unpopular crackdowns against the unruly natives, to spare their own reputations and soldiers from retaliatory terrorist strikes. Harry's Diamonds

I found myself endlessly curious about the diamonds that Harry wound up with in the wake of Skin Game. Not just their value, but the implications of what Harry could do with them. Oh, and for those of you who are remembering Anna Valmont’s advice, about selling a few of them here and there, over time—well, that’s a mortal’s best option. I’m pretty sure that Harry just happens to have a few alternatives available. I’m going to take a look later in the post. And, as I found out when I started to look into it…it all gets complicated. So this will be a fairly long post.

I know that someone has previously posted a rough estimate for the value of Harry’s share of the diamonds in the wake of Skin Game, but my impression that there numbers were…off. I also was pretty sure that Jim wasn’t going to give Harry hundreds of millions—or even trillions—of dollars in diamonds to play around with. Now, I that some of you consider that irrelevant, that Harry is “always” a pauper, and he’ll lose them shortly, one way or another.

Au contraire, I’m pretty sure that the whole point of Changes was that Harry changes. He cannot afford to be a pauper and “have nothing” any longer. He has to be responsible. One reason for that is Maggie. Harry can no longer afford to live in a crappy basement apartment. Including the fact that they need a very secure location, one not vulnerable to assassins, invasions, fire bombs—or kidnappers.

Point of fact, way back in Small Favor, Harry dreamed of having a house. A big house. Maybe even a castle. Well…now he can have those things. Once he gets…sorted out. Probably not right away. Not in timer for the next couple of books.

That’s a theme that Jim has been quietly working in the background for quite a while no. Sure, Harry loved his tiny basement apartment, his beaten up Blue Beetle, his Mickey Mouse alarm clock. But the reason he held them so dear wasn’t because of what he preferred, it was because of his abandonment issue. It’s simply that those things were his. They weren’t running away, they weren’t leaving him. Until they did, of course. But, as Jim has made crystal clear elsewhere, what Harry really wants is all of the things that Michael Carpenter has.

Call it homis envy. A big, comfortable house, happy kids, and a wife who loves him, who is his partner in every way. Not necessarily in that order. Oh, and a part of him is probably bewildered that the Carpenter family has never had a cat or dog. Well, of their own.

Most startups fail at connecting with their customers. Here's a 4 step process to mapping out your customers: what they do, what they value, how they talk & where they hang out.

The last few weeks I’ve spent a lot of time talking to startup founders in Oslo who have recently received funding, and are now looking to invest it in growing their business.

We talk about how important it is to know your customer or audience in order to grow.

The approach we take in startups and business is not that different to other jobs. If you’re a teacher, carpenter or police officer, it’s paramount that you understand the people you are engaging with, so that the interaction is as productive and pleasant as possible.

A good place to start is talking to your audience and ask them loads of questions (basic, I know — but very powerful). Some areas I focus on are:

  • what they do 🔨
  • what they value 💰
  • how they talk 💬
  • where they hang out 🌍

💰 What is valuable to your audience? When you understand your audience’s responsibilities and interests, you want to uncover what’s valuable to them. You can do that by understanding their previous experiences.

Let’s say, if you’re selling a TV, you could ask what the customer enjoyed or disliked with her previous TV, when she likes to watch and what types of shows she enjoys.

If your customer particularly enjoys watching children’s TV-shows with her small kids, your pitch should probably not be about the TV’s cutting-edge nano technology. Rather, you could tell her about how the TV can be attached to the wall (so the kids won’t tear it down) and how easy it is to turn the TV on and switch channels, so that she can focus her time on the precious moment with her kids.

🔨 What does your audience do at work or in life? Does your audience manage people at work? Or do they lead a project? Maybe they enjoy football. If you understand your audience’s responsibilities and interests, you have a powerful foundation from which you can start the dialogue, create trust and move the conversation forward.

You will know which product that is more relevant to them, the best time to get in touch, what decisions they can and cannot make, if they have any colleagues who will be involved, etc.

💬 How does your audience speak? In the Old Testament there is a story of two tribes who fight a great battle. One of the tribes wins, and sets up a blockade to catch the fleeing enemy. In order to distinguish the enemy from allies, they ask everyone who comes through the blockade to pronounce the word shibboleth. The allies pronounce it with an sh-sound and are allowed to enter. The enemy pronounces the word with

Father Saunière and the Holy Grail - The French mystery that inspired the Da Vinci Code

Father Antoine Gélis wasn't a well-liked man. He was secretive, haughty, and the judgemental type. And he was rumoured to be rich. Filthy rich. He had been a priest in the small Southwestern French town of Coustaussa for over four decades, but he didn't have many local friends. Actually, only his nephew ever checked on him. On All Hallow's Eve, 1897, he prepared his meal and sat at his modest, worn-out hardwood dinner table to eat. He tore the bread with his hands and poured himself a small glass of wine. He was still wearing his dark robes and hat. He began to slowly scratch his spoon against the sides of the bowl, waiting for the soup to cool. Nobody knows if he ever got to taste it.

The next morning, on All Saint's Day, he didn't show up for mass at church. Alarmed, his nephew came to check on him. Father Gélis hadn't missed mass once in forty years, so why would he do so on one of the most important days of the year? When he got to his uncle's doorstep, he instantly knew something was wrong. The blinds were shut, but the door was unlocked and slightly ajar. The clergyman always left his door locked overnight. He was insanely paranoid. He had even hung a bell on the door frame so he could hear it if someone tried to break in. This definitely wasn't a good sign. The young man walked into the dark, sparsely decorated living room and found nothing amiss, so he moved on to the dining room. And the sight that greeted him when he walked in probably stuck with him forevermore.

Father Gélis lay on the floor on his back, in the very centre of a very dark red puddle of blood. The gendarmes were puzzled. Who would want to kill such an unremarkable old man, worse yet, the village priest? Nothing had been stolen. And boy, was he hiding something. Several invaluable, ancient gold coins were found in his lodgings, along with a scandalous sum of money. How had Father Gélis gotten his hands on all that gold? And how come he never told anyone about it? His drawers had been turned inside out. Whoever killed him was looking for something. Had they found it?

The neighbours later confirmed that he had received a late-night visitor, but they didn't know who it was. It was dark. That particular narrow street in Coustaussa had no streetlights. The bell behind his door made no sound, meaning Gélis had to have opened the door himself to greet his visitor. Did the two men know each other?

The crime itself had been horrific: Antoine Gélis had been beaten and stabbed to death wi

  • XIII : a seminal series, drawn mainly by William Vance, on a conspiracy involving the assassination of POTUS. It's the canvas for Ludlum's Jason Bourne novels. It's probably the best French crime series you can ever read up until The Judgment, the 13th issue. After that, it's still an OK read but compared to the beginning it's flushed down the toilet.

  • Largo Winch : aka Van Hamme's other series, involving a trust fund kid whose dad is murdered one day and finds himself at the head of one of the largest conglomerates on Earth. It's Batman if he was an accountant : he's handsome, filthy rich, and everybody is always trying to kill him to get his money. There's a trustee sidekick met in a Turkish jail, outlandish plots, grotesque bad guys, naked women with model curves every other page. Clearly Van Hamme's guilty pleasure, but it's still top-notch.

  • Wayne Shelton : Light Largo Winch if he was Thief of Thieves. Still Van Hamme, still a handsome hero, still women, still outlandish plots except he's a thief. I like it but it's clearly a one-read.

  • SODA : Written by Tome, the guy who took Spirou after Franquin's death in the 80s. It's got clear elements from issues like Vito la Déveine . Happening in a caricature version of NYC, with a cop whose mom believes he's a preacher and has to change clothes in the elevato

Interview on Playing Cards with Collector & Magician Steve Brooks (The Magic Cafe)

Here are some excerpts from a fascinating interview with collector and magician Steve Brooks, who has a passion for playing cards, and currently has a collection of more than 26,000 decks, and a large number of uncut sheets. The entire interview can be found here.

When did you start collecting playing cards, and what got you started?

I've haphazardly collected them off and on since I was a kid, because of the art. The artwork that was on them seemed pretty cool, and I tried to get different variations. Back in those days I didn't know anything really about playing cards like I do now.

I got more serious about it in the last 15 years or so, because of my interest in the American Civil War, where I started seeking out certain decks that were printed in that era, e.g. Faro decks.

How large is your own collection of decks?

Usually when you get into collecting something, it starts off as a hobby, and then sometimes you can go crazy with this stuff. I've often joked I need to get a cheaper habit than playing cards, something like heroin or something. Plus you have to have a place to put all your cards.

I go to Costco and I buy these bins, black with big yellow lids on them. I've got stacks of these jammed full of decks of cards. What's crazy is when you fill one of those up with decks and bricks, and go ahead and try to lift one of those up. "Oh, I need to move these over here." Decks of cards are paper, and what is paper? – wood. So they're really heavy, and you need a couple of guys.

My card collecting is crazy, it's out of hand. I could not easily move my decks. This would take trucks. I've probably got close to 26,000 decks, last I kind of ran through them. I believe the world record is 25,000 decks – but that is individual decks. My collection thus far isn't individual decks, because in some cases I've got a brick, or two or three of the same deck. Now for a lot of people, that's a huge collection. But I know people that have got way more than that.

Do you have any particular favorite decks in your collection?

That's like asking me what my favorite band is. That's a tough one because I have a lot of favorites and for different reasons, for different things. And if I moved some of my stacks, I'd realize "I forgot about this one, and I really like that one." But I like decks that are different, and I've got so

[S] Swoldow's Survivor: Millennials vs Gen X

After an amazing season in Saints vs Sinners, were bringing back a twist where we divide the tribes by age, but this time with the added bonus of generation as well. A tribe of Millennials (28-35 year olds) will face off against a tribe of Gen Xers (36-55 year olds) to see which generation, age group, and way of life is better at this ultimate social experiment.

MEET THE CAST:

Vanua Tribe:

  • Abigail 'Abi' Morris, 30, Hotel Receptionist (u/Ilovedogs1100)
    • Abi grew up in a middle class household. Nothing much didn’t happen until she was 11 and her dad passed away, this changed her life drastically as her mother became abusive. A few years later, her older sister moved out and offered for Abi to live with her. Abi really wanted too but her mother wouldn’t let her. Abi’s sister knew her mother was abusive so she called child protective services on her and Abi got to live with her sister. She dropped out of high school and became a hotel receptionist. Abi has been in a relationship for 4 years and would like to take the next step in life.
  • Ahmed Singh, 29, Baseball Player (u/FrieNads)
    • Ahmad grew up in your stereotypical Muslim household, overbearing parents and daily visits from his extended family. Ahmad was always a teacher’s pet at school, always did well and got along with the teachers. He got bullied of course, but it never let him get to him. But it all changed when a fellow student started choking and he managed to save her, thus earning the student’s respect. He liked sports so he decided to play baseball, and he is really good at it. He is going into this game to represent the Muslim community, and despite being strict he can have fun and help save the day.
  • Butch Savage, 28, Personal Trainer (u/IAmWolfNinja)
    • Butch did not grow up as good person. When he was young, he was your stereotypical bully who picked on people because he enjoyed it. However, he grew up in a neighborhood where being like that got you arrested. After being arrested countless times at only 14, he decided to make a change. He ran away from that place and lived with a gang until he was 19. After being arrested again, he started working as a personal trainer to get in shape and he continues to live like that do this day. After years of being arrested, he still carries some asshole tendencies. He wants to be a good person, but he's terrible at doing it.
  • Federal 'Feds' Hunter, 19, Student (u/FineGuidance0)
    • Feds was born in to a military family. Her dad

5G: Why do I have to choose between Huawei and Essential Oils™?

[TDLR BELOW]

I have been living under a rock (graduating and working in quarantine while taking care of distant family) regarding the recent 5G hype. I'm seeing more marketing towards consumers (Oneplus 8, every single LinkedIn that is not about IoT) but after looking into it a bit I found myself disagreeing with both sides.

In many countries, there has been backlash against 5G, where according to the protesters it would have all kinds of health hazards, such as causing corona virus, cancer, impotency and even kill birds. There also seems to be a correlation between the people who are against 5G and the people who are against vaccination.

I am generally in favor of new technology and thus in favor of 5G if its benefits outweigh its risks. Even if 5G is completely harmless (which according to most people it seems to be), I am extremely wary of Huawei being in charge of critical communications within my country. I do know that you shouldn't blindly rely on US intelligence and should take their statements on Huawei with a giant grain of salt, but Huawei has repeatedly been accused internationally of installing backdoors in their communications hardware/software and has been accused of spying for the Chinese Government.

I won't go into the whole hypocrisy from the US (NSA) and underlying causes such as the ongoing trade war between the West and China and China threatening the power position of the US as it's too complex for this post. Regardless, one of the major suppliers of critical 5G communications is a company that has been (still ongoing) banned by many government agencies and there have been public accusations for more than two decades [d]

Aside from privacy/security concerns, I have not yet seen a valid case for 5G. For pretty much every technology improvement, a case has been made. 4G promised real-time video communication and streaming and we now see that promise kept. Same goes for electric cars, self-driving cars, IoT, etc. and I would argue that some of these technologies are even more disruptive than 5G. 5G is an extremely cool combination of technologies (OFDM, Massive MIMO, mmWave) but still an innovation of existing technology and nothing like going from horse to car, which is why the whole "The first car didn't have a valid case against horses for most people and yet here we are" is extremely dishonest in my opinion.

There are things to be said about the mountain of research on internet addiction, binge-watching, dep

Bloodlines: The Legacy of Charlemagne (Part 4)

King Eudes II

23rd of November, 1112

Peace is perhaps boring, but in truth I’ve never been happier. Though lately it seems concerns have been floating in the court. It seems my cousin King Bernardo is being invaded by infidels for the better part of a decade. Many are worried Egypt will soon fall. Then there is the recent epidemics that have broken out along our ports, though I have been funding new hospitals to help handle such a crisis. Even now a new medical academy in Paris is being built in my name. Though by and large the biggest talk of the court is the new Reconquista in Iberia. The Mohammedans have conquered much of Iberia and only small christian holdings remain. Some Castilian noblemen have raised some troops to launch a reconquest for Aragon held by the Emir of Toledo.

4th of August, 1113

I was stricken with grief when the servants came in to announce that the workers have finished in their initial construction of Notre Dame. The first mass was being held in the church, though construction for the long term project will continue. I asked for my sons Princes Charles and Leon to attend the ceremony and mass in my stead. To think after over two decades I wouldn’t see the fruition of my plans.

Iberia c.1112

27th of May, 1113

Over the past several weeks it started with a violent cough and progressed to fever and a constant pain in my chest. Every breath became ragged as I came before my royal physician. He says I’ve contracted pneumonia. As I laid in the bed struggling to breathe I recall so many years ago seeing my son Eudes in the same condition. God why is it so hot. I miss my mother, I miss my son, I miss my wife.

14th of March, 1114

I’ve felt like I was on death's door for months now, but over the past few weeks I’ve progressively been able to walk around and continue my work. At this point I’ve made a near full recovery. It seems God constantly challenges me with various illnesses, I thought this one was going to be the time where I was taken into God's kingdom. It seems he still has plans for me.

15th of April, 1114

I’ve gotten to meet my first grandson. Both of my sons have produced daughters up until now, Charlotte has also given me grandsons,

Significant Insider Trading Activity (Last 7 Days)

This is a list of the top 20 companies that experienced the largest change in insider shares in the last seven (7) days. The SEC defines an insider as any officer, director or 10% shareholder. It is not illegal for these people to buy or sell their own shares. In fact, since most of them get paid in stock options, it is expected. However, it is illegal for them to trade on inside information that has not been made public. So for example if there are drug trial results that are bad and not public, insiders cannot dump shares. That said, many people have observed that insiders - in general - seem to have a good track record at timing their purchases. All trades that are marked as part of a 10b5 plan are excluded from this report.

Ended up in a really bad deal, with multiple major issues not disclosed or found in inspection . Help/advice would be appreciated.

I'm in a tough spot. Thank you in advance if you take time to read through this and have any thoughts/advice.

I recently bought my first house. It's a $200,000 house in Michigan, and I put 20% down. I bought it as a move-in ready starter home, and 200k is fair for this level house in this neighborhood. I make a little over 50k per year, so it's on the higher end of my price range, but with a 20% downpayment and no other debt, I knew I could afford a move-in ready house at that price, but it's certainly not chump change for me. The inspection found no major issues, and the house appraised at 205k. Closed without any issues.

Since I moved in just a month ago, I've run into one MAJOR problem after another. After the first rain, I discovered a leak in the finished basement, and a couple of small puddles in the attached garage. I've since discovered additional leaks in basement, and found that source of the leak in the roof is some rotted portions of roof edge, which has been there for long enough to cause significant structural rot to the wall below (the wall will likely need to be completely reframed/replaced). Another roof edge / wall in the garage has similar issues, though not as far advanced (repairing the roof there may be enough). There are signs of the same sort of rotting roof edges along portions of the house as well, though seems to be the most minor at this point.

I had about 20k in emergency savings going into this, thinking that 10k for a major unexpected house repair and 10k for unexpected job loss would be enough of a safety cushion. I'm now facing three major repairs, between the basement waterproofing, roof repair (possible to likely total replacement), and structural repair/replacement of rotted garage walls.

I've shored things up with some 4x4 posts in the garage wall and some makeshift plastic flashing on the rotted roof edges, but obviously these are not permanent fixes. I'm looking for any advice at all on how to tackle this, both in terms of possible recourse, prioritizing/addressing repairs, or getting out from under the deal.

In terms of recourse

None of this was was disclosed by the seller. I have absolutely zero doubt they knew the basement leaked and the garage leaked since there were sizeable puddles after the first rain and every rain after. I have little doubt they knew the garage leak was coming in from the roof, but it's at least possible they're incompetent or didn't care enough diagnose it. Either way

Cellphone tower is being raised too close to my house. I know it's unsafe. How do I stop it?

I live in a small town in Tamil Nadu, near Thiruvallur. Close to my house there's a tower that is being built, supposedly by JIO. It's been 2 days since they started construction and they've only started digging. They say it will take 2 months to fully complete the construction. The spot is ~50-100 meters from my house and there are other houses nearby. There are research studies pointing to the dangers of living too close to cellphone towers (see list of sources below). Especially living within 150m around a tower results in heightened exposure to persistent radiation. This can result in adverse long-term health effects including but not limited to memory loss, cancer etc. (see sources list at the end). There also short-term effects:

Short term effects as a function of distance from cellphone tower. See source 2 in the list below.

We've been making calls and we spoke to the person in charge of the construction and he says he's got all the papers to do this and that if this was indeed dangerous he wouldn't have been able to get the permit from the government. And he has challenged us to find evidence of health hazards for living too closely to a cellphone tower. The research on this is fuzzy and I don't know what to show him or how to handle this. I know that this is definitely not good for our health to live so closely and I would like to have this be stopped and have it relocated to a safer distance from residential buildings. What do I do?

List of sources that elaborate on the health hazards of living close to cell towers:-

When you are worthy

What I am about to discuss will undoubtedly make some of you rebel. On what is said, however, I will take a firm stand, for it needs to be said.

You have been taught to be daring; you, as well as so many forgotten souls within the Order’s annals, were told to make your claim. You emerged hotheaded, your heart trembling with awe at your prospective future. You were given a new path in life, a path of self, of Freedom and universal attainment, and all you needed done to tread it... was to declare yourself Darth.

A statement of power, a claim of superiority. A bold word; that synonymous with a Master of the Sith path. Your personal apotheosis from the lot of mortal crowds; your wish of distinctiveness granted in a single moment...

That you, proclaimer, may well have not deserved.

Darth is a word of power. It signifies mastery; it declares one purposeful and proficient, passionate and controlling, educated, yet applying in practice, independent, Strong, Powerful. It lays the road ahead of you, for it presupposes you will not be led astray.

Can you, my kin of mind, now claim yourself all of these things and more?
Chances are, you cannot... though the title is somehow still yours to bear.
Such is the reason for me to write this text: to grant clarity on why you cannot, and exactly when you can. To finally attribute to a word so venerated a meaning greater than petty proclamation. To know for certain...

#When you are worthy of Darth.

•••

The Code of the Sith dictates:

Peace is a Lie,
There is only Passion.
Through Passion, I gain Strength.
Through Strength, I gain Power.
Through Power, I gain Victory.
Through Victory, my Chains are broken.
The Force shall set me free.

What I shall discuss needs first be understood through a suitable metaphor. Thus, heed an example that has guided many across its four centuries of use — that of the master carpenter.

A master carpenter wields skillfully each of the instruments in his workshop, from saws to rulers to chisels to hammers, and constructs new ones if the need arises. Thus, he instructs his apprentices in their use, teaching them the crafts fitting their skill.

A master carpenter discerns types of wood with a keen eye: the stronger woods are reserved for the pillars, the prettier patterns line the front facade, while the crooked planks feed the campfire. Thus, he plans the future house through the resources at hand, and his workshop pr

Rep Ladies Playlist $$$

Coming onto this sub always puts me in a very specific "badass/I love fancy things" mood so I created a playlist to reflect that! To be added to my playlist the song must have lyrics that reference money or fancy things and have a fun or badass vibe. The playlist is available on spotify (it's just called Rep Ladies followed by two flying money emojis), but I have also listed below every song on the list. Next to each song (after 'Lyrics:') I have inserted the lyrics that qualifies the song for this list.

  1. 7 Rings (Ariana Grande). Lyrics: "Write my own checks", "Make big deposits", "Think retail therapy my new addiction", "Whoever said money can't solve your problems must not have had enough money to solve 'em", "Happiness is the same price as red bottoms", and even more
  2. Big Spender (Kiana Lede, Prince Charlez). Lyrics: "You might have your own but I'm the big spender", "All the smiles come from dollars in you wallet", "I could have Gucci, Prada", "Big baller, boujee shot caller"
  3. Regular, english version (NCT 127). Lyrics: "Yeah pull up in the Jag, haters gon' be mad", "Diamonds drippin' better bring your raincoat", "Iced out both my wrists now I can barely see the time", "I am too rich to compete", even more
  4. Lotto (EXO). Lyrics: "White champagne, shower in the bubbles", "I just hit the lotto". Disclaimer: This song is mostly in korean but when I listen to korean songs I just read the english translation as I listen, easily available on google.
  5. Diamonds Are Forever (Sabrina Carpenter). Lyrics: "I'm your sugar mama, I'm the piggy bank", "I am a diamond, and diamonds are forever", "I'm your new money", "One percent I'm at the top, but this earth money, that's what I'm worth honey, that's what I'm worth"
  6. The Man (Taylor Swift). Lyrics: "If I was out flashin' my dollas, I'd be a bitch, not a baller", "What's it like to brag about raking in dollars and getting bitches and models?"
  7. Shiny (Jemaine Clement, Moana soundtrack). Lyrics: "I will sparkle like a wealthy woman's neck", "Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough", "I'd rather be shiny like a treasure from a sunken pirate wreck"
  8. Money (Cardi B). Lyrics: "Big fat checks, big large bills", "I was born to flex", "Diamonds on my neck, I like boardin' jets", "But nothing in this world that I like more than checks (money)", "Get a little cash (money)", even more.

Message to Humanity: “The Great Change”-Balance is Coming

I wrote this last week and have become compelled to share this

I’m here to remind ppl of their souls' purpose.

We all have a SOUL and each one of us came here to earth at this particular time, to live in this particular body, to learn lessons…. Whatever hardships you are facing , whatever difficulties you’ve had in your life, YOUR SOUL signed a contract to come here in this form to learn those lessons and then fulfill your soul's purpose. We ( our souls) are all here in this present moment ( and life span) to help the world. We have an obligation to make the society we live in become a better place .

We as HUMANS are MEANT to help one another; However, we have become distracted by society and forgotten our souls purpose….. We all have a SOUL and each one of us came here to earth at this particular time, to live in this particular body, to learn lessons- so whatever hardships you are facing , whatever difficulties you’ve had in your life YOUR SOUL signed a contract to come here in this form to learn those lessons and then fulfill your soul's purpose. We ( our souls) are all here in this present moment ( and life span) to help the world. The society we live in becomes a better place . We are MEANT to help one another. However, we have become distracted by society and forgotten our soul's purpose.

When we pray to God ( whatever your belief of God is... )( separate discussion about that again later... ) we often ask for help or things pertaining to/of the material world…. We ask for things of a more selfish and self- serving manner. “Please help me make more money, “please help me find my partner or be loved”...etc,, etc.. “ Why is this happening to ME”? But, what is the purpose of those questions? Are they for things that have to do with fulfilling your life’s mission and your soul's purpose? Or, are they simply to be “happy” to fit into the material world in which we live? Are we taking the time to ask “why this is happening? “, and then doing something about trying to figure out the answer to that question?...

We have equated happiness with “success” in a world that has forgotten our soul's purpose? Shit, does anyone even remember they have a soul!? For instance, ask yourself , “ When was the last time you thought about your SOUL? When was the last time you thought about what your purpose on Earth is?

Our purpose is far greater than achieving monetary wealth, having a “ perfect life” ( something that was created by man- and in my opinio

Demolition Days, Part 30

That reminds me of a story.

The Walrus and the Carpenter

Were walking close at hand;

They wept like anything to see

Such quantities of sand:

"If this were only cleared away,"

They said, "it would be grand!"

"If seven maids with seven mops

Swept it for half a year.

Do you suppose," the Walrus said,

"That they could get it clear?"

"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,

And shed a bitter tear.

Bloody sandstones.

Bloody siltstones.

Bloody mudstones.

Bloody Rotap.

Only one complete set of sieves. Where’s the fine set?

It’s 0130 and I’m still running samples at the lab.

But I’m missing the key sieves. The damn waterheads, that is hydro’geologists’, keep borrowing the finer meshes, running their wet samples and forgetting to clean or dry them after they use them. I spent two solid weeks here carefully disaggregating samples to do a statistical analysis of the grain size distribution for three different Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary formations in New Mexico and they’re down here running fucking sewer effluent.

And they don’t even wash out the sieves after they’re done.

Now I can’t even find the fucking things.

No wonder real geologists and waterheads get along like Vegans at a Sizzler’s.

Plus, I’ve still got 15 rolls of film to convert from slides to prints.

“Take slides out west...They’ll be so much clearer…It’ll be so much easier when you get back…” the museum photographer told me.

Yeah, let him do the printing…would have been so fucking much easier with print film.

OK, so it’s a bitch to go from prints to slides, but the reverse is no picnic either.

But, on the other hand, things are looking up. Esme and I are set to wed in June. I’ve got a cheap-ass rental duplex with two other guys only three blocks from campus. I’ve mostly healed up fairly quickly from my little impromptu ski trip on talus last September, but my back will never be the same; looks like I’ll be wearing this wretched back brace for the foreseeable future.

Still, it’s better than being paralyzed. Can’t wait until I’m 60 with this dodgy back…

Esme has secured a good job doing QA/QC, quality control/quality assurance, at one of the largest military-industrial manufacturing complexes here in town. SEM inspection of parts, destructive testing, all that sort of good stuff. Not exactly geology, but using her scientific skills and putting them to good use.

She promises me I can he

Creating the Modern Javanese Economy (P:art IV)

The Modern Javanese Identity (Part III)

CREATING THE MODERN JAVANESE ECONOMY

When one looks at the Indonesian economy, one has to split the Indonesia economy into three categories, you have resource rich provinces, non-resource rich in the outer islands and provinces on Java. The dichotomy of the Indonesian economy rest with resource rich provinces and Java. As we saw during the resource boom from 2005-2014, when there is a spike natural resource prices, it increases the value of the Rupiah, and makes labor intensive exports on Java less competitive. Although, the overall impact on the economy on Java is minimal, because Java's economy isn't just dependent on labor intensive manufacturing.

SUHARTO'S REPELITA V, REPELITA VI AND EARLY REFORMASI (1987-2003) UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Previously I did a post comparing Jokowi's economic policies to that of Suharto. This post will be more comprehensive than that post, by going into the historical context for reasoning behind Jokowi's economic policies. Basically Jokowi's economic policies are aimed at recapture the direction Indonesia was heading toward from 1987-1997, while at the same time implementing policies

The Indonesian government has developed policies address the first issue like keeping low government deficits and current account deficit. For the second issue, both the SBY and Jokowi have developed social policies like Program Bantuan Operasional Sekolah (SBY). Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (SBY), Kartu Indonesian Pintar (Jokowi), Kartu Indonesia Sehat (Jokowi).

However, what Indonesia has struggled with is moving along the same economic trajectory of the period between 1987-2002 which was growth based on manufacturing and industrialization. Much of this growth in manufacturing and industrialization was focused on Java, particula

Dalmation Man

I am writing this to you, not for your own curiosity but to satisfy my own. And as a means to remember more of that day. To maybe help soothe the pain I’ve carried all this time. Journaling, after all, is a good way to deal with trauma. So more than storytelling, I consider this an exorcism of a demon. A demon born…born…ten years. Right.

My nightmare began in Sarah’s Laundromat. How stupid.

The bell above the door rattled as the glass doors shut behind us. Middle-aged women with pink hair curlers looked up from their wrinkled magazine, rolling their eyes as we ran through the aisles of the laundromat. Henry went for the vending machine, Steven pulled up stools to the corner arcade cabinets.

“Aren’t you two gonna help?” I asked, lifting a basket of reeking clothes up to a washing machine. Neither listened. Henry just walked back holding in his thin arms a whole cornucopia of Cheetos and starbursts and chocolates. I always wondered where it went. Never got to ask. Steven kept himself glued to the monitors, patting down a seat for Henry. I stood tiptoed over the machine, piling black-smudged sock after black-smudged sock. Filling the machine to it’s seeming rim. Slamming down the cover and putting it to whatever setting made the most noise and bustle. And the machine roared, fidgeting in it’s bolted slot. Like all the others. Just rows of washing machines greyed with use, metal peeling off their edges as they shook along the wall or against each other. Women wheeled baskets with giant poles, staring at us three with the absolute look of death on their faces: dark ringed eyes, sagging jowls.

I went towards the arcade cabinet. Stopped. A television in the corner of the room beeped, staticky, in constant rhythm. Emergency report. A missing child, suspect still at large. No details. I looked up, watching the television break to static. The janitor walked out from the backroom, sighing, broom still in his hand. He went up to the machine and gave it two slaps.

Back to “Cooking with Miranda!” on Channel Five. The janitor turned, a vulture looking fellow. One, that even after coming here for six years, I’d never gotten to learn the name of. He tapped the floor with his broom.

“You three again?” He sniffed. “Didn’t you see the news? Where’re your moms?”

“None of your business.” I said.

“Fuck if I care then.” He waved with that I-Don’t-Get-Paid-Enough attitude, retreating to his nest in the back.

All to my sides were the possessed washing machines,

Just hit half-a-million!

Hit a new milestone tonight. Just wanted to share with someone. Started at 23 with nothing, but did have a decent job starting in a call center.

13 years later, I hit half a million in Net Worth, and I just bought my first investment property! (I will close on it in February)

https://imgur.com/a/aPsYg

Edit: I've had a few PM's and enough people ask what I did to achieve this.

Quite frankly, I treated debt like it was a plague. I didn't get my first credit card until I was in my early 20's, and I've never carried a balance. I never went to college, so I have no college debt. (This is probably a major factor in my success.) I'm not going to knock college education, and I don't want anyone thinking that not going to college is the way to get this kind of money, but it was a major contributor to my success. Not having a college debt, and just working hard and learning in a computer technical field (one of the few fields where college used to not matter as much unless you were a programmer) contributed to my success. I focused on scripting languages, and became so good at them, that I built automated systems for companies.
I want to be clear on this. Experts say college degrees are still the best way to get ahead financially in life, and that people with solid degrees will ultimately do better than those of us without. However, there is some merit in "the plumber, the carpenter, the handyman" and those types of jobs, where no college degree was ever had, but they build success on their own. I think a lot of kids overlook these types of trades, and I've seen my share of very very successful people. I also think sometimes carrying a college debt, and not nailing a great job as soon as you step out of college can be depressing, and this may impact performance in a work place. I have no idea, but the experts say otherwise, so I trust them. In the end, with compounding interest, there could be an argument that unless you get out of college with $X amount in salary versus $Y debt, it may take you years to catch a person who never went to college, with no debt. It's like the math problem of an 18 year old investing $5000/year into the market from 18 until 23 years old, and then NEVER invests again, versus a 23 year old starting to invest $5000/year into the market at the same growth rate. Go do the math. Go see how many years and how much money it takes the 23 year old to invest to finally catch the investments of the 18 year old! It's a f

  • A time zone conversion site for everyone. It is probably easiest to just click the stream link though.
  • "Only 1 day away! I'm having a ton of media coming, here is where it gets really exciting." https://twitter.com/yousuck2020/status/1049111548604506112

Very little details so far beyond the date and time. Post what you know here and I'll try to update as I can but likely won't be able to do a full transcript like last press conference, if someone in the comments wants to step up to the plate, that'd be great. Apologies for my rough translations, I'm trying to get the feelings across more than a precise robotic translation.

If you're really interested in the details of this project, be sure to checkout /r/DearMoonProject as well!

MZ - We have only a 6hr day now at zozo instead of instead an 8 hour day. Along with employees, I cut all of the unnecessary out of my day and it greatly improves my focus, concentration. So with the time left over, which there is quite a lot of, I can spend that on art and projects like space. Enjoying life, studying.

[Lets Build] Thieves Guild Quests

Welcome to the 67th [Lets Build]!

TOPIC: Thieves Guild Quests

Die Roll Result
1 The Duke of a local region is supposedly traveling through a dense forest tomorrow. He is known to travel with all kinds of riches. (What the players don't know is, the Duke had already been robbed when he and his men entered the forest. The "Duke and his guards" are members of a rival Thieves Guild pretending to be them so they don't rouse a suspicion. The real Duke is currently tied up in a chest that a horse is carrying behind them.)
2 Your guild has encountered some unwanted smuggling competition in the city. Your job is to ransack their base of operations and leave before dawn. Reward is 100GP per member. Bonus 50 gold per member if they leave no survivors and take everything of value back to the guild.
3 Constable Viread has been overly energetic in apprehending members of the guild, despite generous donations to the Constabulary Benevolence Fund. His higher-ups have been unable to curb his excesses. The Guild therefore authorizes its members to bring to light any salacious details that if brought to the public might cause the good constable to reconsider his zealotry. Any member that can supply relevant information (credible, though not necessarily verifiable) or is responsible for causing an incriminating scandal will be generously compensated by the Guild.
4 It's rumored that the fabled Black Raven is in town. Find out who has it, where is it being kept, and steal it for us! (The statuette is a fake, unless it isn't, in which case it's cursed) (Loosely based on a continuing arch in the Quest for Glory series)
5 Two Daggers, one of our esteemed colleagues is currently imprisoned. He has sensible information that we wouldn't want the royal guards to get a hold of. We need you to help us free him. And if this is not possible, to silence him.
6 One of our members, Gideon Dance, is getting married and going straight(ish). His bride is the only daughter of a powerful merchant, and the two will make a great pair. There's only one problem- the local captain of the guard is a spurned admirer of Gideon's wife-to-be, and is assembling evidence to arrest Gideon on the day of the wedding. We need you to steal the evidence from the Captain's Chambers in the guardhouse and replace it with evidence that's clearly fraudulent.
7 Someone is robbing temples and beating priests and supplicants half to death. We are being blamed for it, which is destroying all the goo

[Table] r/history — I’m Lucas Richert, an expert in the history of pharmaceuticals, the historical director for the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy at UW-Madison, and the author of “Break On Through.” AMA!

Note: There was a trend of multiple replies (by the one question-taker) to questions posed, so I took the liberty of combining some comments into one.

Questions Answers
What can you explain about the move to close mental institutions in the US? It seems like now there is a need for them, because most serious patients are just shipped around hospitals or end up in jail instead of long-term care. Though I understand the institutions were problematic, it seems to me they were better than the non-system we have now. Is there anyone pushing to reopen them? Hi. Smart question. Yeah, deinstitutionalization was predicated on a few legal and technological changes. This occurred in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The closing of the mental hospitals had to do with costs, as well. It had to do with the development and approval of major tranquilizers and antipsychotics, making it more feasible to have "patients" operating outside the confines of the mental hospital. There was a push, too, for community-based psychiatry. I write a lot about this topic in my book, Break on Through.
But I'd recommend a few other good books. My friend and colleague Erika Dyck wrote about a Canadian asylum: https://uofmpress.ca/books/detail/managing-madness, or this one by Mark Ruffalo (not the Hulk from the Avengers): https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/freud-fluoxetine/201807/the-american-mental-asylum-remnant-history. Good question!!
^(the below question has been split into two)
1) Hi Lucas: Are pharmaceutical companies as evil as the media headlines make them out to be? I'd say this: they aren't as evil as some say. Or as angelic as other suggest. Usually, the truth lies in the middle.
2) What are some realities of the industry that are often overlooked in media critiques of pharmaceuticals? What can be improved? Thank you Improvements? I'd say transparency when it comes to spending for R&D and/or marketing. I'll come back to this... I think that some of the other answers I offered help with your question as well!
How rapidly has the use of pharmaceuticals increased on a per capita basis since 1997, when the FDA allowed widespread use of television advertising to sell drugs? How does the prevalence of pharmaceutical drug use differ in countries that do not allow advertising? Finally, do you think per capita use will ever decrease in the US? Will per capita use decrease? I would sugges

Significant Activist Hedge Fund Activity (Last 7 Days)

These are the latest Schedule 13D forms filed by activist investors in the last 7 days. Activist investors are investors that make an investment with the intention of influencing management in some way. There is evidence that following activist investors into investments can generate excess returns. Schedule 13G forms, in contrast, are filed by significant investors with no intention of influencing management (such as Index funds).

There is always a lot of interest in insider trades, but what a lot of people probably don't realize is that hedge fund activity is probably more predictive of future returns than insider activity. The reason is that hedge funds (a) have large research budgets, and (b) have a choice where to put their money. In contract, insiders have no choice where to put their money, but only when to time their transactions.

New Filings

This table lists new 13D filings in the last week. A new filing does not necessarily indicate a new position, as investors frequently accumulate in advance before reaching the filing threshold.

A summary of what has been said on the game so far

Playable Worlds is building an online world where a broad range of players can find a home, whether their preferred playstyle is exploring, adventuring, socializing, crafting, or player versus player combat. These diverse communities can each play the game in their own way, or cross over with one another, delivering diverse play experience and enriching the world. Bringing together proven features from some of the world’s most popular games in a unique combination that hasn’t been seen before, the team is developing a broadly appealing and novel experience that leverages modern cloud architecture, simulation, and AI.

“I’m incredibly excited to bring a new world to players,” said Raph Koster. “Technology has caught up to the visions we always had of alternate worlds where entire societies can form. It’s time for that dream to be fulfilled.”

https://www.playableworlds.com/press-releases/playable-worlds-raises-27m-to-create-a-new-sandbox-mmorpg

“As you might guess, with the online world, we are going to build a massively multiplayer world where all sorts of players can come together and find ways to regardless of whether they like exploring or adventuring or socializing or player-versus-player (PvP). It’s a sandbox world that supports many ways to play.”

"If you look across a lot of the most popular games that are out there, and the ways in which people play them, whether it’s PvP, or like Minecraft, or like building, some people like playing for socializing, and so on,” Koster added. “There’s an awful lot of proven features out there that we know audiences enjoy. And a lot of them actually were born from sandbox MMOs. So we’re going to bring together those proven, fun features that we know people like, into one world.”

[...]

“It’s going to be a brand new intellectual property,” Koster said.

[...]

“We want a world where all sorts of players can find a home,” Koster said. “That means for players and people who are more casual, people who are really gamey and people who enjoy chatting. From mobile games to Facebook games, I do think that there are great lessons to be had from all of those different parts of our industry, and I want to apply them all.”

[Order Guard Outpost Station: 42]

Gradz rubbed the corner of his eye as he spoke to the camera, his voice sounding weary, “It has been nearly three days in Galactic Standard Time. Everyone made it off the ship safely and thanks to Tara, the pirates didn't even notice us.” He leaned back against the wall the metal chair he sat in was pushed against. “We managed to land our warp at the planet Ratyr and alerted the Guard of what happened. The trading crew was rescued and the Guard brought us to this Outpost to wait for them to retrieve Tara. We just got word that they made it to the ship, Tara was waiting for them and she's perfectly fine.” He put his white, slender hands on top of his head, his frills motionless against his jaw. “So, we're in a common area in the Refugee Center of the station awaiting the Guard to return with Tara.”

“I still can't believe this all happened.” Hubjy’s voice said and the camera turned to where she, Ybantal and Lhuubn were sitting at a circular white table; Rex laying beneath it with Opal on his head. Hubjy was cradling her head in her hands and staring at the table surface. Ybantal was absently stirring some kind of drink in a grey ceramic mug. Lhuubn was bent over and trying to coax Rex with a large bowl of raw purple meat cubes.

Rex didn't even look at the bowl, his big brown eyes staring vacantly ahead of him. Opal was scratching his ears and fur, but there was no response.

“It feels so...surreal.” Hubjy continued, not lifting her head.

“Yeah, everything happened so fast.” Ybantal agreed with a frown. “I've never been so terrified in my life. I knew that it was a possibility that we'd have a run in with pirates traveling around like we were...But I honestly didn't think it would happen.”

Lhuubn sighed in defeat and sat up straight. “Rex still won't eat.” He announced, his pale red frills pressed ti

How My Campaign Became a Soap Opera Part 2: Turnabout Valkyrie

So a few people seemed to be interested in a follow up to this post I made about a completely improvised session that derailed my campaign in the best way. So after...5 months? Jesus that took forever. Whatever, the point is we finally wrapped that side story up so I figured I'd give you all some closure. I recommend reading the previous story because there's going to be a lot of context I'm not going to go over because I'm lazy. But to sum it up, the party went bar hopping with the Imperial Family of the largest empire on the planet and the family's kickass bodyguards. This lead to some romantic tensions, wacky hijinks, bar fights, and one bodyguard getting arrested for allegedly committing murder. Here we go.

The story picks up right where we left off: the party and the Imperial Family book it to the prison to learn about what happened to their good friend Rowena. Rowena reveals that thanks to all the booze she had the previous night she can barely remember what happened after the bar brawl. All she remembers is standing in an alley over a halfling corpse, her axe coated in blood as the City Watch arrested her. The emperor wants to simply pardon her right there and then but Rowena refuses because 1). That would be an admission of guilt and she doesn't know if she did or not and, if she did she wants to face the consequences, and 2). The halfling was a respected defense attorney named Harmon Longfoot. If the emperor pardons her for the crime, then he admits Rowena murdered a respectable man. And in a time of war, having a ruler do such blatant power abuse wouldn't sit well with the populace. So the imperial family begin to make preparations for the trial set to happen in a few days, which I don't think is how law works but this is medieval times and everything I know about law comes from Phoenix Wright so y'all gotta learn to deal.

The party had about three days before the trial so they had time to investigate matters themselves. They also learned that Rasha had been put on probation thanks to her actions the previous night so she decided to help with the investigation. I had like two weeks between the last session and this one so I managed to prep a ton of locations each with one or two clues to move the investigation along. I tried to make it so it could be done in any order and I feel I more or less succeeded. I also wrote up a trial s

Father Saunière and the Holy Grail — The French mystery that inspired the Da Vinci Code

Father Antoine Gélis wasn’t a well-liked man. He was secretive, haughty, and the judgemental type. And he was rumoured to be rich. Filthy rich. He had been a priest in the small Southwestern French town of Coustaussa for over four decades, but he didn’t have many local friends. Actually, only his nephew ever checked on him. On All Hallow’s Eve, 1897, he prepared his meal and sat at his modest, worn-out hardwood dinner table to eat. He tore the bread with his hands and poured himself a small glass of wine. He was still wearing his dark robes and hat. He began to slowly scratch his spoon against the sides of the bowl, waiting for the soup to cool. Nobody knows if he ever got to taste it.

The next morning, on All Saint’s Day, he didn’t show up for mass at church. Alarmed, his nephew came to check on him. Father Gélis hadn’t missed mass once in forty years, so why would he do so on one of the most important days of the year? When he got to his uncle’s doorstep, he instantly knew something was wrong. The blinds were shut, but the door was unlocked and slightly ajar. The clergyman always left his door locked overnight. He was insanely paranoid. He had even hung a bell on the door frame so he could hear it if someone tried to break in. This definitely wasn’t a good sign.

The neighbours later confirmed that he had received a late-night visitor, but they didn’t know who it was.

The definitive Franco-Belgian reading list - Part 1 - Crime/Noir

I'm French, and I've been raised with bandes dessinées. I've answered in length to this query earlier and was told to make a topic here. I'm not sure everything has been translated in English, I'll do my best, as well as including other suggestions. Please give me suggestions if you can, I will add them.

##Crime

The indisputable king is Jean Van Hamme. If you got only one series to read, it's XIII.

Happening in a caricature version of NYC, with a cop whose mom believes he's a preacher and has to change clothes in the elevator but looks like a receding hairline version of Cobra while on duty. He's got a depressed chief trying to channel his neurosis into a pet goldfish, the aforementioned mother and overall fantastic plots. It reads fast and is truly amazing.
