Trying to figure out if this is a carpenter ant.

Small dead ants around a window along with a few of these bigger ones. This one had wings and was crawling around. Is this a carpenter ant?

How to get rid of carpenter ants for good?

EDIT2: OK, these aren't carpenter ants, but they are still making a nest inside of my wood garage.

Long story short, carpenter ants have set up shop in the frame of my garage door. I think they've been there for a few weeks now. What's the best way to get rid of them and get rid of them quickly. They are definitely eating out wood and stuff and depositing it on my patio. I put a Terro bait trap out there a few days ago but they are still there.

EDIT: About 5 minutes after I posted this, I went to my garage and saw that they have been busy overnight and this is what I saw this morning: https://i.imgur.com/6BLTsCA.jpg

EDIT3: Another pic: https://i.imgur.com/7mVW8t7.jpg

EDIT4: Trim removed: https://i.imgur.com/nOGd00p.jpg https://i.imgur.com/EbQYfzi.jpg

  • These ants are about 5mm (1/4") in length.
  • I pulled off the trim and it appears to be dirt, not wood, that they are depositing outside of the nest.
  • They bite, but it isn't much more painful than a mosquito.
  • Whenever I disturb the nest, they definitely swarm outside trying to defend the nest.
  • This rotten wood trim will be getting replaced. The bottom 1" or just completely crumbled when I put any pressure on it. It will be replaced with PVC trim and then caulked.
  • And I think I found the absolute best way to kill them

Carpenter ants or rot?

I discovered some rot on my deck this weekend and noticed a bunch of ants in the area as well. Worried they were carpenter ants, I called an exterminator to come take a look at it. pre exterminator visit

When they arrived he dug around in the rot and was not concerned, saying it was just rot and the ants were just any random ants in there because of the moisture. And advised just cleaning it out and repairing the rot.

So that evening I vacuumed out all the loose crap from the hole and now I feel like it looks more like it might be carpenter ants, because it looks like there are tunnels back in there that we couldn’t see when the exterminator came. He did see the ants and didn’t seem to think they were carpenter ants. post visit

close up

So I’m here for a second opinion. Does this look like carpenter ants? And if not how do I go about getting rid of the ants that are there and then fixing the rot? This is the top of a 6x6 post.

How fast does Termidor work on carpenter ants?

I've had carpenter ants behind the siding on one of the walls of my house for a few weeks. I've tried all the 'over the counter' stuff at Lowe's/Home Depot to no avail. I got some Termidor after reading up on some forums. Everything indicated that this stuff works well but takes a week or two on carpenter ants. I applied it a few days ago, I went to check on ant activity the next night and didn't see any. I haven't seen a single ant since I've applied it. Before, I would see trails comprised of hundreds of them. Did Termidor really work that fast?

What do I do with a carpenter ant queen? Where can I give it away?

I live near Cleveland ohio. While doing some work (tearing it half apart) on my deck (which I have known is home to several colonies of ants, some carpenter ants and at least one small ones I haven't identified) I tore a support beam from the base of the deck, and saw a single large carpenter ant surrounded by a little nest of wood pulp. Seeing that it had wing scars, i ran into the house and grabbed a container and caught the disoriented queen before it could escape.

It is a rather large queen that is already missing wings, and has already nested. I now realize I can't care for it because I honestly don't have the supplies to make an enclosure for it right now. I would prefer not to kill or release it, but I don't know where I can go to send it to someone who wants it? I haven't got a clue where I can offer it up for sale or give it away. Does anyone know where that could be and what I would have to do?

Carpenter Ants?

We noticed this collection of what appears to be saw dust/pencil shavings in the space between our exterior wall and wall heater. It wasn’t there two weeks ago when we were cleaning out behind the couch.

We’ve noticed some ants and I believe this is frass. Can anyone confirm? Is this evidence of carpenter ants?

My landlord is pretty awesome, but she’s not local. I informed her of this. The HOA we live in, however, is less awesome. The HOA is responsible for the exterior parts of the building and pest control. My landlord is trying to get them to at least check it out.

Without even looking, the HOA is claiming that the whole development has ground ants but not carpenter ants and that what I have in this picture is just sand (it’s not sand, it’s not gritty, it’s like pencil shavings or saw dust). Their solution is to just β€œsprinkle ground ginger” around the baseboards of my condo.

If this is carpenter ants, will ginger be enough?

Carpenter ants

So, we have a big carpenter ant problem. We’ve had it for years and have tried to manage it ourselves but we can’t. They have been in a certain wall for 3 years and I didn’t realize it was ants until this year. You can hear them in there (I thought it was a sprinkler hitting my house or just a some unexplainable noise), especially on really sunny days.

We have a pest control service some out and tell us what they would do. I know we need to do it but I’m nervous because I have asthma that’s chemical induced and a hypersensitive sense of smell. Even though they’re just spraying the outside, I’m worried that the smell will be so strong I’ll have a scary asthma attack. I can’t use any cleaning products or this will happen.

So my question obviously is : if they spray the perimeter, am I going to be able to smell it inside?? Does it have a strong chemical smell??

Carpenter Ants?

Question on when to call an exterminator. I had noticed a pretty big swarm of ants in my yard 2 to 3 weeks ago. I did some searching and determined that they were carpenter ants. I have not seen them again, however my husband says he thinks he saw some in another area of the yard. We have no rotting wood anywhere nor do we have any trees on the property. I called the exterminator just to get an idea and he is quoting me $450 for treatment. I was kinda surprised but I have never had to call one before so didn't know what to expect. My question, is this necessary? Can I do a home treatment? We do live in a mobile home if that makes a difference and I have never seen them inside. Thanks for any help!

Everyones Favorite: Carpenter Ants

Hey Guys, really hoping to pick your brain on this one.

Started seeing several ants a day in my house, i identified them as carpenter ants due to their extremely large size and general shape. I would kill them but of course they come back - So i started reading up on anything I could find about them and I feel like i have a general good understanding of their setup.

First thing i did was bought some perimeter spray / repellent which i covered the exterior of my house in - i really think that stuff must of pissed them off cause literally a day after i did that its like the growth exploded, i went from seeing 5-10 ants during an entire day to seeing 10 ants within the first half an hour of waking up in the morning.

I thought maybe since they cant go outside anymore due to the spray, the ones already inside are now just coming out in the open instead?

My main to areas of concern are :

  • Primary Issue: The Basement
  • Secondary Issue: Kitchen

I see probobly 80% of my ant population in the basement and maybe 20% in the kitchen, those are really the two hot spots.

I currently have a finished basement with a drop ceiling, when i removed some ceiling tiles I found several dead ant bodies laying on top of the ceiling tiles, so i think ive narrowed down their hiding spot to somewhere in the basement ceiling somewhere, but ive been unable to locate a nest or even ant train anywhere, its always single ants versus groups.

Since im now calling the initial perimeter sprayineffective, im trying to move onto "phase two"

I was going to do a second exterior treatment of Amdro Poison Bait and sprinkle that all around the house, but I have a feeling that wont really do much for my situation considering i believe they are already in the home

I guess my whole issue with Bait is exactly how it sounds... its Bait... Meaning it attracts ants, thereby just making the problem worse and instead of seeing 1,2 or 3 ants ill see 300 ants, know what i mean?

Any ideas on where to go from here?

My wife wants me to call a professional but i figured ide see what i can do next before spending 1,000 dollars on someone who would then put me into a year-round never ending subscription plan

Thank you

termite and carpenter ant treatment quote

We’re in the northeast (Long Island) and recently found some termites in a plant outside the house. Called an exterminator who came recommended by a neighbor. After inspection he said we really have more of an issue with carpenter ants, but as we’ve only seen a few ants in the kitchen it’s nothing super serious.

He quoted us $700 for both termite and carpenter ant treatment (bait), 4 monitoring follow ups, one year guarantee on termites, 6 months on carpenter ants. Plus any liquid treatment that might be necessary if we found any additional activity (new or old), like inside walls, etc.

Is this a reasonable quote? The exterminator works for a major company but does side work, and says that this quote is about 50% less than his company would charge me if we went directly through them.

The carpenter ants in my backyard have been bringing in dead flies by the truckload lately. Where might they be finding all of them? They aren’t leaping up and grabbing them out of the air, are they?

Has anyone used Ultrasonic pest repellents against Carpenter ants?

Since they're inside the wood, I can hear clicking noises and see them outside in the room sometimes. They probably have a food source somewhere I can't track

Carpenter Ant? We just had part of our bathroom retiled this past weekend and we are now seeing ants in our bathroom ever since then. Wondering if there might be a nest that was disturbed with all the pounding? Really appreciate any help identifying.

Considerable amount of frass found by boiler. Just not sure if it is termite or carpenter ant.

Not sure if the items in the link below are from termites. I have a Sentricon contract but found a fair amount of frass along with dead insects alongside my boiler. Images in the gallery. Thanks for your help. https://imgur.com/gallery/vXgLTPi

Carpenter ants in apartment 1 week and a half after exterminators treatment

Hey everyone,

I’ve been dealing with carpenter ants in a new apartment I moved in since 2 weeks ago from today. At first it was these flying carpenter ants coming into my bathroom (this was when I called the landlord to hire an exterminator but he diddnt came until Tuesday the day after Memorial Day to spray). At first they were a few but they then over that first weekend multiplied to around 20 to 40. Then the exterminator guy came and he uses this turkey Bastor looking thing to spray (I think it’s this special bait) into the floorboards of the bathroom and in the window sill). The amount of ants kinda died down for a bit where I’d have a few of those wigned ants and some tiny ants. Prior to him coming, I laid out some terro ant traps and sprinkled borax all around the apartment. Last weekend I diddnt see a sign of any ants (the tiny guys in the bathroom or the wigned guys. But then on Monday, I saw a shit ton of the actual carpenter ants eating the terro bait. I let them eat that stuff all day until my work ended at 5 and killed the rest of the guys that were still there. I saw them going in and out one of the baseboards on the bathroom. Then it gets worse, I am now seeing carpenter ants all over the apartment, about 20 a day.

So I know the exterminator guys said I will be seeing activity for the next 2 weeks (this will expire on Tuesday) and to call the landlord if I am still seeing them.

My question is this. How screwed am I? Am I going to have to move out? Did me putting out borax and ant traps make it worse?

Ant problems. Pharaoh or Carpenter?

Hi. I live in Florida and have been seeing an uptick in these little tan/black ants...in my bedroom of all places. I noticed only two Saturday, on my night stand. I've been looking and paying attention since then and only today have seen more activity. Since I don't bring food into the room, I'm afraid they've made a nest somewhere next to my bed (cringe).

Under my table I have a little set of plastic drawers for any paperwork I'm afraid to throw away. I haven't opened any of the drawers in God knows how long. I've seen the ants on both objects today. I don't have time today to go through everything today, so I have to wait until tomorrow. I don't want to see it until I have time to take action. Afraid if I do right now, they might scatter and I wont have time to clean them up as I'm getting ready to leave for the day. I could call pest control, but have animals, so I'm afraid to have my apartment sprayed unless I can't handle it myself.

I just took some Torro traps and put one on the table, and one underneath on top of the plastic bin. I'm scared to see what it'll look like when I get home tonight, but am hoping they will start taking the poison back to the nest before I can investigate further tomorrow.

Does anybody have any advise for me? Are there any further steps I can take myself to combat these guys? Should the Torro be enough? Any other pet friendly things in your toolbelt that may help? I'm not scared of ants, but I'm extremely anxious about pulling everything out in the morning and finding a nest. My gut is saying there has to be one, or a few in either the nightstand or the drawers in the plastic bin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Edit : From a few responses I got it seems like getting a picture for identification would be more helpful as far as treating goes. As soon as I can get a clear picture, I'll add it in.
