[Hiring](Tucson, AZ) Company is Growing, Needs Applicants. Communications Assistant - CaptionCall. Great Job for Students!

Hey guys. :)

Want to work on homework and get paid at the same time?

I work at a company based out of Salt Lake called CaptionCall, and we also have a center in Tucson. We provide a captioned telephone for the hard-of-hearing. The job is a call-center environment (individual cubicles), however Communication Assistants (which is what I am) never actually speak with a customer, or make a phone call.

We are considered a third-party, which means we listen in on the line and repeat one side of the conversation word-for-word into a speech-to-text client. In between phone calls, you are welcome to work on homework, surf the web, draw, knit, meditate... and if you are a good employee (accurate relayer of calls), you can watch videos (Hulu, Youtube, etc).

If you are a college student right now and you are looking for a part-time job (up to 28 hours at first, then you may request to be a full-time employee), this is a good place. I've been here for over two years, and I have no intention

CaptionCall VS CapTel?

So I have recently accepted a job with the Department of Human Services, and I need to take and make phone calls. Can anyone give me feedback on the CapTel vs CaptionCall? Just looking at each of the phones designs, I prefer the CaptionCall. It's more attractive and it looks like the captions may be easier to read.

I've sent a request for the IT Dept to look into which would work best with our phone system, but I'd like to hear about other Deaf/HoH's experience with the two.

My work is hiring for anyone that needs at least a part time job until you can go back to your regular job

The company that I work for is CaptionCall. CaptionCall is a company that supplies free home phones with a screen that captures conversations for people who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing. Your job would be to caption all spoken words that the hard-of-hearing person is speaking to. It’s pretty easy tbh.

We need both English speakers and Spanish-English bilingual speakers. English speakers start at $12/hour. Bilinguals het more but I am not sure what their starting rate is.

Right now as far as I know, the company is only hiring part time which the company defines as 29 hours or less a week. However because we’re considered essential by the federal government all part time and full time employees are getting overtime during the pandemic (most of our customers are the elderly).

I know it’s probably not the best job if you’re someone with a mortgage or kids. But if H-E-B or amazon is taking awhile to get back to you, maybe apply here?

Please respond if you have any questions! Some thin

Will they call my grandmother over $25??

I did the phone interview and told them that my grandmother gives me $25 monthly so that I can buy minutes for my cell phone and this is the only money I have (until I can find a job). So then I had to send them a letter stating that she gives me this money, my grandmother had to sign the letter and I had to include her phone number.

Will they actually CALL my grandmother?? She is in her 80’s and is hard of hearing. I’m worried she won’t remember giving me the money or tell them a different amount! I sent the letter exactly as they asked, I don’t see why they would need to call too.

Question about cell phones and text-to-speech

I've made some Google queries and come up with very little so I thought I'd ask: does anyone use any sort of TTY app or speech-to-text equivalent for calls on a cell phone? I'm trying to get my nearly deaf grandmother a good means of communication that doesn't require her learning to text (absolutely not happening) and doesn't require my slightly tech-averse father to be able to text 80 wpm (also not happening). Ideally Mom/Dad would talk, the app automagically converts to text for Grandma, and she just responds verbally. I have to imagine there's some way of doing that out there. We haven't committed to any particular hardware on Grandma's end, this would be her first cell phone at 87. Mom and Dad run Android phones, but they've got PCs handy at home as well. Grandma doesn't have high speed internet or anything resembling a computer in the home, though if necessary I imagine we'd get whatever was required for her, the hard part is selling her on it.

So my fellow TFTS'ers, another tale of woe from my bunch of WTF moments. Names and places have been changed to protect the innocent and not so innocent.

Recently, one of our subsidiaries (hereby to be known as Sub$) have been complaining that they can't call out from their phones in the morning. They were on a PABX instead of VS, which was getting on in years. A quick restart fixed the issue for the day, but this happened every morning for a few weeks.

The vendor guys who went over to check could find nothing wrong, so the PABX kept getting restarted every morning. Eventually, the problem stopped happening, without us or the vendor guys finding out what the issue was.

If only this was the end...

One morning, we received a call from Sub$ complaining that now they can't make calls out of the country, but local calls were still going through. This was followed by a call from Telco$, and we got this little conversation :

Telephone accommodations: what's available nowadays and works well?

Hi all. I'm moving into a new position and my employer has asked me what type of telephone accommodations I might need. In the past, I've avoided using the phone (preferring email or face to face meetings instead), but this is a high visibility role that occasional telephone use could be useful.

I haven't tried to use the phone or any related products / services in forever. I used to use relay services more frequently (around 5-10 years ago), but it was a nightmare to use and also sucked for the other person. Does it still suck? What about Captel? Is that still a thing and does it work well? Any other assistive devices or services that could help me?

A little more about me: profoundly deaf, wear hearing aids, use speech well and lipread. Not fluent in ASL. Directly connecting a phone to my hearing aids wouldn't really help because I need to lip read to be able to comprehend language. In an ideal world, I'd love a phone/service that allowed me to use my voice to speak to the other par

Applying for jobs with a disability

A bit about me: I'm deaf, but am not the stereotypical deaf person. I can speak, and due to my two cochlear implants, can hear well enough to keep up with a conversation. I've been told by other people that they wouldn't have known I was deaf, if not for my visible sound processors attached to my head.

The issue is, despite my implants, I cannot hear well enough over the phone. To get around this, I've been giving my wife's cell phone number, as we do not have a landline phone. A few people have called, only to state that the job requires me hearing on the phone, and hang up.

Often, when filling out online job applications, I'm truthful about my disability when asked for EEOC purposes, if I have a disability. Other times, there's an comment box to supply additional information that I may want the hiring manager to know, and so far have been a bit concerned about mentioning my hearing disability, out of fear of having my application rejected for those reasons.

VoIP options for hearing impaired

Hello, A friend of mine has Yealink T48G handsets with a cloud hosted PBX. He used to use an analog device called CaptionCall (https://captioncall.com/). I suspect if we setup an ATA we could figure out how to work in his old CaptionCall device somehow.

However, I am trying to find out if there is a better way to do this. For example, is there anyway we can hook up some kind of extra device to work with the Yealink handset to show the text as captions? Or is there a way we can hook up the CaptionCall analog phone up with an EHS36 adapter?

What is the industry best practice for enabling caption calling with VoIP handsets or VoIP service? Thanks!

FCC will make Caption Call harder on the customer.

If you are a Caption Call phone customer or know of a friend, grandparents or neighbor who uses the Sorenson "Caption Call" phone, you may want to inform them about some new developments about some growing issues that are coming up.

Recently, the FCC has put out an update that requires the user to keep their phones off until a push of a button to enable captioning, which removes automatic text caption to their phones, which has upset a lot of people who require the phone to conduct personal or even professional use. Some customers do not care for that update on their phones, but now they will have to preform more tasks just to use their phone.

  • First, the FCC would like to prevent anyone from receiving a captioning telephone for free. Instead, everyone would be required to pay a minimum of $75 to receive a captioning telephone and participate in this service. IP CTS customers are already required to pay for long distance telephone service and broadband Internet access in order to

We need your help. The FCC is violating the disability act of 1990

Hello Fellow Redditers,

The new FCC regulations are severely going to impact the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. They are trying to charge the heard-of-hearing community $ 75 /a month to use the CaptionCall services. Caption Call was created to help those who are hearing impaired to interact with their loved ones over the phone by being able read the hearing persons conversation over text. If these regulations are changed the majority of hard-of-hearing customers will lose their ability to receive captioning. Not only are these proposals violating the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 but it will also put a lot of the workers for Sorenson Communications, CaptionCall out of their jobs. They are already decreasing the amount of hours for PT workers and had to shut down SIP relay. Please help me by signing this petition. It will only take a moment of your time. Thank you so much.

Here's the link to the petition. Please sign it!
