The Typography of F1 Car Numbers

F1 cars have always had numbers on them to identify them. Since the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, the FIA has more strictly enforced the rules concerning the display of driver names and numbers. Despite this, I still sometimes struggle to identify some of the cars. I'm going to analyse why that is.

(yes, I know I could use the T-cam, but it's tiny and, in 7 years of watching F1, my eyes have never been drawn to it)

Before I begin, I'd like to make a couple of key points that underpin this analysis:

  • The numbers, while they are somewhat large on the car, appear quite small on TV most of the time
  • The most common angle you'll see of an F1 car on TV is from the front (and hence the emphasis in this analysis will be on the front-facing numbers in particular)

What makes car numbers easy to read?

  1. Good placement - you can't read it if you can't see it

CMV: Edinson Cavani's case just shows how political correctness beats common sense once again.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJd3vWmASKO/?igshid=bknugbfikymf

Context: Cavani reposted a picture from one of his friends on instagram with the caption "gracias negrito👍", which means "thanks mate👍". Since some people were offended by it, Cavani deleted the tweet and apologize. But now, the FA gave Cavani a three-game ban and a £100k fine.

Now, we should all fight against racism and we all now it's terrible. But c'mon, he can't even speak his own language now? I get some people thought it wasn't right to say that word, but if you don't keep in mind the context then we may as well walk on eggshells whenever we are saying anything.

Also, I think there's another moral debate here. The FA is punishing Cavani for saying something in spanish, his own language. They are, in a way, canceling his own language which it's bizarre.

Cavani must also complete a course for breaching the FA rules which I think it's the right thing to do. But that should've been the end of the story. Because

American Girl Dolls as Bachelor Contestants

The post last week comparing Kit with top-tier American Girl Doll Kit Kittredge inspired me and I wanted to do my own speculation on the American Girl Dolls as Bachelor contestants. So here we go. Not all of them are included, sorry, I'm just including the ones that were out when I was still an American Girl Doll Fiend.

Kit: I said this in a comment before, but Kit Kittredge goes on for an undercover investigative journalism report on the treatment of Bachelor contestants. She's witty and fun and people like her but she gets eliminated mid-season because there's no chemistry with the lead. When she finds out the lengths of manipulation that producers go to for good television she breaks any kind of contract she'd signed onto, writes a tell-all as soon as her elimination airs (because she understands the wrath of people who hate spoilers), probably gets into some legal trouble with ABC, and end up signing with a company like Barstool to do fun podcasts and clickbaity articles for t

[Paid Release] Lumi: Night mode camera

I am sure most of you can relate taking a photo from stock camera app in a low light environment and got so disappointed with the quality that you instantly delete it. Many of us feel that taking low light pictures is a waste of time and hence we just let go that thought of capturing that precious moment. if you had a DSLR, you would have got a better shot by making use of long exposure photography but alas, not everyone are willing to carry the bulk with us. As it is said, "The best camera is one you have with you", so why not make the maximum of it?
Meet Lumi, a computational photography tweak designed to take better and brighter photos in low light. Lumi makes use of LONG exposures by capturing several images to reduce noise and smartly merging them to enhance your low light images. The tweak has been written from scratch using low level objective-C frameworks and does not use any apple private api or anything related to stock night mode. This tweak is actually the result of 9 m

Netflix in Spanish with Spanish subtitles!

Hello fellow learners. I have heard people complain that watching Netflix in Spanish with Spanish subtitles doesn't work so well, because the subtitles often aren't the same as the words spoken on out loud. This is because two different people/teams are translating the same lines. One person is translating the lines spoken out loud, and another is translating the closed captions from reading them.

This has been a somewhat discouraging point for some people (myself included). However, I decided to say screw it, and do it anyway.

This may not be the case for everyone but I have found that it is surprisingly more helpful than you might think. I'm at a point now where I understand some of what is being said out loud, and most of what I read in text. After enough consistency and repetition, you will start to associate different phrases that have the same, or similar meanings based on context. You don't realize at first that your brain is starting to make these connections, but it

Passed CLEP Spanish Language with a 75!

I'm feeling pretty great! The exam was at times difficult but I feel like my Spanish skills are validated as a non-native speaker.

Background

I took Spanish for 7 years in middle school and high school, including AP Spanish, but I graduated in 2016 and have not studied Spanish in a classroom setting since then. I have used Spanish sometimes since then for work, travel, and to talk to my girlfriend's Spanish-speaking family, but I don't speak on a regular basis. I knew that I would mess up some of the more complicated grammar rules and that I needed to review all of the verb conjugations.

Preparation

I primarily used the REI prep book to review grammar. On the first practice exam I scored an 80%. I also used the College Board sample test and scored an 86%, but this doesn't test your listening with recordings. I used some of the free exercises from studyspanish.com to practice verb conjugations and grammar rules.

For additional listening practice,

Tactical Team 186: A Ghost Recon prequel in Vietnam

It would be a prequel with SOG personel and their experience would bring about the Ghost Recon unit. This could bring the GR franchise back to a more squad tactics-focused gameplay, more realism to the weapons and equipment, and for it to have a better story with better characters. Given Ghost Recon's insignia was directly inspired in the SOG one, and lore tracing GR to 5th SFG (the inheritor of SOG's battle honors), this would sediment the origins even more firmly.

A first phase serving as a prologue could follow a French GCMA unit (groupement de commandos mixtes aéroportés, and precursor to the SOG/SF concept)

The entire situation was beyond blown out of proportion by the media outlets that had covered it (no surprise there), resulting in a pretty worrying number of individuals believing that it was an actual 'danger' to begin with. What the heck is wrong with my caption?

This is a slide from a PowerPoint presentation that will be bundled with a forthcoming book of mine. An academic reviewer flagged the second line of its caption (the part in parentheses) along with some doofus mistakes in my Spanish elsewhere. (Yes, I still make mistakes after studying Spanish for decades, teaching it for (fewer) decades, and knowing a lot about the language from an academic perspective. This makes me a more compassionate teacher.)

I have fixed all the doofus mistakes but honestly don't know what is wrong with the caption. Its intended meaning is hard to express in English, too: it's something like "(% of the population for which it is a first language)"

Did I miss a gender agreement error? (I don't think so, having triple-checked that porcentage is masculine.) Does the verb es need an explicit subject, perhaps cada uno? Did I use the wrong relative pronoun? (Maybe lo cual instead of el cual -- this has always been a weak point

Not that this really concerns me, because English is my first language, but what does that mean? While you're watching the live show in English, are you privately listening to a recording of it in another language? Synopsis means summary, so do they seriously have a voice explaining what's going on while the script itself is untranslated? Going Seventeen is a really good variety show

Going Seventeen (or GoSe) is such a clever strategy to give attention to Seventeen. What makes it successful among fans and non-fans alike?

  1. The structure: Every 2 or 3 episodes have a set theme. This means that you don't have to watch the episodes before that theme to understand the context. Thus, it makes it easier to get into. The logos even change according to the theme.
  2. The editing is phenomenal: For non-carats and carats alike, I think that everyone agrees that GoSe editors/production team deserve a big raise. GoSe shows you the power of editing and captions. A bad joke - CUT. Too many facts - CUT. Not a lot of reactions - CUT. Dino wants to show the viewers something - let's blur it. Jeonghan accusing someone of cheating - Let Me Introduce Myself. Seventeen are bickering - Seventeen are really devoted to each other. Editing and captioning makes or breaks a show.

Brad's Subtitle Guide

Howdy folks!

I noticed tons of people (myself included) have struggled greatly with subtitles in Plex, so I thought I would create this little guide to help those of you looking for a one-stop-shop on subs. After a few years of using Plex and watching many movies, I have grown accustomed to how they are implemented. It's not as difficult as it sounds, but there's a little bit of learning we must do before we get started. Firstly, I highly recommend starting with Plex's subtitle guide. It does a good job discussing what is supported and how your library's layout and structure should work.

Now that you've read through that, we need to understand subtitles themselves so that we can have a plan going forward as to how they need to be set up.

Recap: The Marriage Retreat Episode S10E7

JB explains that they want to set up a marriage retreat for the couples to make for stronger marriages and a stronger extended family as a whole. So basically the point of this marriage retreat is to strengthen the Duggar Brand™ but I guess that’s the premise of this entire show.

Michelle mentions that Pastor Caldwell, who is leading the retreat, is their pastor. This makes me question the theory that TTH is technically a “church” for tax purposes(given the implication that they attend a church led by Pastor Caldwell), as well as the claim that the Caldwells aren’t as fundie at the Duggars(if the Duggars are attending a church it’s definitely gotta be as crazy as them).

Subtitles in Spanish

So I barely know any Spanish but I’m learning. Sometimes when I wonder what was said (I watch with Spanish audio, English captions) I put on spanish captions and it doesn’t make sense. Like some phrases when translated make no sense in english, I guess because it’s translated literally. And it got me thinking even if I learn spanish fluently, there will be phrases that I have no idea what they mean because it isn’t my first language. Example: Tokyo and Nairobi were talking in Part 3 Episode 6 about how Nairobi doesn’t need to read minds to know that Tokyo feels guilty. Nairobi says, in english captions, that she doesn’t have to read minds. In spanish captions, it says that she ‘doesn’t have to be a lynx.’ Another in that scene: Nairobi says that they are all adrenaline junkies In spanish captions, it translates to say ‘we are all going!’. Since it's COVID-19, I am WFH on regular hours, so from 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. So after three straight days of research, contacting individuals, therapy sessions for those affected (no I'm not kidding, that's what I've been doing the last three days along with my research and moderation), we believe that we have uncovered all that needs to be published in order to take the fear out of this situation.

And so:

-This, as we know. Is a hoax. These JG accounts began to show up on TikTok, as far as we've seen, around 9 or 10 days ago. They all follow the same pattern. Dueting videos with the caption 'Do you wanna play a game?' or something similar to that. While we have theories as to where this started, we cannot say for sure. But, JG appeared to have e

Exploding, Please Wait

Another 10,000 Americans died. Okay, listen up! All /r/coronavirus subscribers, line up for the scheduled circle jerk.

#US Officially Passes 200,000 Covid-19 Deaths

>Can we for once not just post “It is what it is”, even to be ironic, and take a moment to really internalize how devastating this really is? > >I know these comments are meant to highlight our federal leader’s lack of empathy, awareness, and leadership, but let’s just take a moment to mourn as a nation. ^[+2697]

/r/coronavirus: NOPE

>“It is what it is” ^[+2384]

>We've had 2-3 many people die as our worst flu season ever, and that's WITH lockdowns and masks and social distancing and shit.

My favorite case of /r/coronavirus' circular rhetorics: the US didn't lock down, nobody wears masks, and social distancing isn't enough distance...but also, the lockdowns, masks, and distancing saved hundreds of thousands.

What happened to Robhgien yrgna?

I’m not quite sure if this fits into the category but it came up in my thoughts just now. The only community I could think of was here. I’m more than happy to remove it if it doesn’t fit - It is my first time posting here so I’m not as sure how this rolls. Just let me know if there’s a better place I can post it. I also am using mobile so excuse any poor formatting. Moving on...

For those don’t know or forgot - Robhgien yrgna (or angry neighbour backwards) is the name of a YouTube channel which has posted bizarre footage. He created it in 16th January 2013 and posted one video the next day. It was some howling noise. From what I can tell, it sounds like a dog or puppy howling. Or some form of wolf or whatever. He appears to have poor grammar as he arranged the date and time in a strange way. Here’s one example:

20130113 705PM teens loitering in the dark (translation: 13.1.2013 at 7:05pm)

Since that day, he posted many videos, some say

My husband and I watched every Tom Hanks movie in chronological order. Here are our thoughts.

Disclaimer: This post will express many opinions about Tom Hanks' movies. We understand our opinions may widely deviate from yours (and possibly the majority of movie watchers). My husband and I certainly disagreed on a fair number as well. We love Tom Hanks and are sharing our journey to open up a fun discussion. So, let's try to keep the flogging to a minimum.

About two years ago, my fiance (now husband) and I were in a long distance relationship. We had been in this state for quite a while and it was clearly wearing on us both. Although we were nearing the end of being long distance, we really wanted a way to bond in a new way. I'm not sure who initiated the idea originally, but we decided we would watch every Tom Hanks movie ever made in chronological order, so we could crown ourselves ultimate Tom Hanks superfans.

When we started, we had both seen most of his major movies (Forrest Gump, Toy Story, Big, etc.), but certainly weren't buffs. As a side note, we are not big movie

What A Day: USPS De Résistance by Sarah Lazarus & Crooked Media (08/10/20)

"The president has done a lot to bring this country together." - Kayleigh McEnany, previewing Trump's message for the RNC no one can attend

Executive Disorder

As the country passed another grim coronavirus milestone without a stimulus agreement in sight, President Trump generously offered up the next best thing: a handful of legally questionable executive orders to cut unemployment payments, trick renters into thinking they’re protected, and bribe struggling voters with a tax cut that they’ll have to pay back later. If that isn’t Mount Rushmore material, lord knows what is.

How to create partnerships for your virtual volunteering idea

Volunteers have always been the drivers of virtual volunteering, much more than programs that host volunteers. And it’s still true now, in 2020.

Back in the 1990s, when Impact Online (now VolunteerMatch) launched one of the first volunteer-matching services online, there were FAR more people visiting the web site that wanted to volunteer than there were organizations posting assignments, and those assignments were supposed to be all ONSITE, but volunteers kept asking Impact Online staff for things they could do ONLINE. That’s why Impact Online launched the Virtual Volunteering Project in 1996: to promote the idea of involving online volunteers to host organizations and train them on how to do it. When I began directing the UN’s Online Volunteering service in February 2001, I stopped all outreach to potential volunteers and turned all attent

AIOPM

I've already written most of this, but I've come back up to just clarify: I don't think this is a big conspiracy. This is more of an account of what I've read and found. I find this guy genuinely interesting, and I saw a mystery in the word AIOPM that I wanted to investigate.

Eduardo Majin is a man with down syndrome who uses Youtube and a couple of Tiktok accounts to publish videos. So, far I've found 2 different accounts he's created, their names being eduardomajin4, his most recent account that gets uploads regularly and aiopmaiopm, and older account that he first posted on in June 2019, and stopped posting on in July 2019. I'm assuming he lost his password and had to make a new account, with little loss considering aiopmapiom has 11k followers and eduardomajin4 has 56k. the account eduardomajin3 is a fake account, and Eduardo's followers have been trying to get it taken down. The other two accounts have to be him, as he's duetted and used sounds that connect to app, so it's not s

A Ghost Recon prequel in Vietnam

It would be a prequel with SOG personel and their experience would bring about the Ghost Recon unit. This could bring the GR franchise back to a more squad tactics-focused gameplay, more realism to the weapons and equipment, and for it to have a better story with better characters.

A first phase serving as a prologue could follow a French GCMA unit (groupement de commandos mixtes aéroportés, and precursor to the SOG/SF concept) operating in the jungle borders and interdicting enemy lines of communication. One of the Frenchmen of the GCMA, playable in order to teach the controls, could then move on to serve as a CIA advisor to the SOG unit controlled by the player later on. The unit could be named Tactical Team 186 "Tiger Team" and, due to their efficiency in attacking out of nowhere, dubbed "*Jungle Gho

This some days-old account on TikTok started posting these disturbing videos of a girl crying in a dark room viewed from a baby monitor, can someone please explain what the heck is happening? (post, this needs to be seen)

REDDIT WE DID IT

PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THIS ANY FURTHER

The account just released a video 3 minutes ago saying she was making freak videos /u/505nick just made a tiktok reporting about the videos to which the creator reacted to and turns out it was mandy all along messing around. We can't thank you enough /u/505nick!

You can't make this up guys. For all of those wondering, the caption in the videos is the "creator" replying to other users that are asking for the next part, in Spanish... The user has been posting these 15-second videos for 3 days straight.

Thing is, TikTok is notorious for hiding this kind of stuff and not alerting any authorities...
