The Problem with CMT and Profiteering

On Reddit and YouTube, you often see a large number of people praising full stream translations and massively downvoting any comment trying to argue the ethics of reuploading the entire stream, translated or not. One repeat offender of uploading full-stream translations is CMT, who is known for accepting commissions for them at a rate of ~$6 a minute and uploading them to their own channel with multiple mid-roll ads.

Their first full-stream translation that got taken down was from Tamaki, back when Tamaki explicitly told his fans not to clip his streams because of Content ID issues. He’s an independent VTuber, meaning it’s quite expensive for him to deal with Content ID issues on YouTube—a risk that he can only avoid by trusting his fans to not clip or reupload his content elsewhere. Even then, CMT took on a full-stream translation commission of a collab stream between Tamaki and Mamatsuri. This not only violated Tamaki’s wishes, but also [Hololive’s guidelines](https://cdn.discordap

Please explain "I'm going to the middle of the day"?

I'm sure you guys have seen this... When you translate some korean captions to english a lot of the time it just says:

"I'm going to the middle of the day" or even "I'm going to the middle of the day I'm going to the middle if the day I'm going to the middle of the day".

I've seen this on both Weverse and Instagram throughout the years on these accounts:: BTS, Stray Kids, TXT, Kard, AleXa, Gidle, Itzy, Ateez, Woo!Ah!, MonstaX, Everglow, Got7, Cignature and Secret Number.

(I'm sure it shows up on a lot more accounts but these are just the ones that I've personally seen it on scrolling through my feeds.)

After some googling I still have NO answers!

Can someone who speaks Korean explain the mis-translation and what it is actually supposed to say?

I understand it's become a meme within some fandoms, but I want to know what it was initially intended to mean. Like what is the actual original meaning of the phrase. The artists/idols post it in their captions so it has to m

Transcribed Fairy/Faerie quotations: a Scammer Timeline footnote

So as part of my Scammer timeline, I wanted to transcribe the Fairy/Faerie quotes, but holy moly, she has posted a bazillion of them. I decided to make it a separate post from the timeline since it was so long. I didn’t catch every group of fairies she posted, but I think I only missed one “flash sale”? These are all the ones I was able to find and read, if anyone has shots of the ones I’m missing, please send them my way! I also couldn’t read all of them because some were on too light of paper with the bad photo quality, so take my translations of some with a grain of salt. She swapped between spelling them Fairy and Faerie with no apparent reason, so I kept whichever one she wrote on there. There were also some she definitely tried to resell after supposedly selling the first time, and I have those noted. I was surprised, but most the quotes were actually new writing with only some recycled lines, so this is indicating she has actually written more of Scammer than she’s let on. I hav

Have any of you learned a very different language through exposition only?

In the book Polyglot: How I Learn Languages, by Kató Lomb, she describes that many of the languages she learned was through reading books of that language, without using other resources or methods. She started with almost 0 comprehension, and was slowly able to increase it as she was recognizing patterns and repetitions.

In some sense this was how I learned English. It was a very slow process. Which I am definitely not 100% there yet, even after several years since I read my first book entirely in English or watched a US movie without captions. It happened entirely through exposure (internet, movies, songs), so I tend to believe her claims could be true.

But there are some languages that are so different it is hard to believe it is possible. English was somehow easy for me. It uses the same alphabet as my first language, and the words are separated the same way (a group of Latin characters separated by a blank space, from left to right, similar punctuation etc.). I cannot say the sam

Galactic Economics 1: Happy Existence

This is not a story filled with a lot of violent action and badass human mercenaries kicking alien ass. Instead, it's about markets, logistics, and economics. If that bores you, I totally understand.

Economics is a highly contentious field, but I've tried to keep current politics out of it. Most of the parts about human markets and history are descriptive, not judgemental.

Because there are some parts about human history or reflecting it, it was inevitable there may be a little bit of HWTF in there. My goal in describing those was not to glorify the worst parts of our own history, but to bring a realistic view of how we have learned from our past.

Spoiler that will give away parts of the first two chapters of the story:

English lyrics in Korean songs are (often) jarring

I have mostly listened to Korean songs by BTS. So, I do not know about the other Korean artists (Drop in recs, please). I think I liked the songs with least amount of English lyrics like Spring Day and Blood, Sweat, and Tears. It feels organic and undisturbed.

In most of their songs, the English lyrics feel forced as if they want to give the I-Army to hold on to something. I understand it might be important wiith respect to marketing. But as a listener, it feels very weird listening to a random "thang" in the songs. I think in songs like Black Swan where the lyrical flow is important to actually appreciate the intensity of emotions, the "do your thang" part is very annoying. "Your one, your two" makes me cringe; like what does that even mean? This looks especially superficial when you compare it to the other parts of BWL (e.g. RM's rap).

It seems like they make songs where a set percent of the chorus is compulsorily in English. I don't mind if the English lyrics feel natural in the

[Paid Release] Lumi: Night mode camera

I am sure most of you can relate taking a photo from stock camera app in a low light environment and got so disappointed with the quality that you instantly delete it. Many of us feel that taking low light pictures is a waste of time and hence we just let go that thought of capturing that precious moment. if you had a DSLR, you would have got a better shot by making use of long exposure photography but alas, not everyone are willing to carry the bulk with us. As it is said, "The best camera is one you have with you", so why not make the maximum of it?
Meet Lumi, a computational photography tweak designed to take better and brighter photos in low light. Lumi makes use of LONG exposures by capturing several images to reduce noise and smartly merging them to enhance your low light images. The tweak has been written from scratch using low level objective-C frameworks and does not use any apple private api or anything related to stock night mode. This will be a HUGE setback for the kpop community. There is a petition going around, hope you guys will sign.

Animated Music Videos 2020

#Intro

2020 is over and thus people will look back at the year and discuss which anime was AOTY. We also see it on r/anime where the nominations for the 2020 r/anime awards are now open (well by now they're almost closed. Wanted to post this a bit sooner but my body said no and decided to get sick. So the post might be a bit rushed here and there because I did want to post it before the nominations actually closed).

Maybe your favorite anime was the sequel of a show you already loved like Kaguya or Re:zero. Maybe it's a new show like Dorohedoro, Great Pretender or Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. However whatever anime it's there is a big chance it's a tv series and thus most of the discussion will be about series and perhaps a few movies. With the r/anime awards there is however also a Short of the Year category. You might immediately think of anime with short episodes with that category like Aggretsuko and Heya Camp or something like Pokémon: Twilight Wings but in this category you c

Ẹ káàbọ̀ - This week’s language of the week: Yorùbá #2 !

The origin of the Yorùbá people

In the beginning, Olódùmarè (also known as Ọlọ́run, Olúwa, Elédùmarè), the All Powerful ruled the Ọ̀run, a place that is nowadays called the heavens. He then created Ayé, that would be the Earth, but it was dry and empty. Ọlọ́run then created the first type of Òrìṣà, the Òrìṣà fúnfún. To their leader, Ọbatala, he gave the task of making the Ayé alive. Ọbatala went to see Orunmilá, son of Olódùmarè and God of Destiny and Prophecy (Orunmilá is a key deity on the Ifá divination system), to seek help in the task given to him. Orunmilá told Ọbatala to get a gold chain that would reach the Ayé, a white hen, a black cat, a snail’s shell filled with sand, palm nuts and to put it all inside a bag.

He got everything and hanged the gold chain from the edge of the Ọ̀run and started to climb down. When he got to the end of the chain, he realized that there was a small distance yet to be covered. Orunmilá told him to take the shell and drop the sand into the land

Colour Coded Lyric Videos

I’m sure you have all see them on YouTube, and wondered at how these people release so quickly after a song’s release.

I’m an avid reaction channel watcher, and many of them are now having a hard time releasing content because of copyright claims. They can’t make any money from monetisation, and a lot of their videos now cannot be viewed as they are being taken down and banned by music companies.

That’s when I thought of those colour coded videos. They literally put up an entire song with no additional commentary under fair use, and their videos are still up and running.

Now, I have a lot of problems with these channels. For example, a lot of their translations are inaccurate, releasing sub-par quality videos, when English captions are literally provided on the music video. They are simply unnecessary, so why do they have so many views AND are still able to make money off of it.

These channels manage to PROFIT off copyrighted material and half-assed translations. And by profit,

Depictions of Mohammed

First time poster on reddit and non-Muslim, non-believer, westerner. What do ex-Muslims think of my take on cartoons of Mohammed?

I may be far off so correct me where I falter but I’m trying to wrap my head around the widespread belief among Muslims that they should enforce Islamic rules on to non-Muslims. With the violence and beheadings over cartoon depictions of the Islamic prophet Mohammed I started with the basis for this rule. I am under the impression that Muslims believe that depictions of Mohammed must be prohibited because these images could promote idolatry. The concern with idolatry being that idols misdirect the reverence of believers towards an idol, an object that merely represents the intended subject of worship, not the actual subject. If this is true then I assume that the prohibition on depicting images of Mohammed are actually a prohibition on Muslims misinterpreting an image as a manifestation of the genuine prophet Mohammed. How accurate are the subtitles with Japanese voices?

Hey all, I've been playing through Tsushima for the first time using Japanese voices with subtitles. I am studying Japanese and while I am very much still a beginner, I have noticed some things which seem quite disconnected from what I'm hearing and what the subtitles are showing, and makes me wonder about the accuracy of the subtitles as a whole.

Some examples that I've noted so far:

 • Various times minor NPCs will refer to Jin as "Sakai-sama" (translation: Lord Sakai) and the subtitles will show as "My Lord"
 • At the end of the sidequest "The River Children," >!Shino says in Japanese, "domo arigato gozaimasu" which generally means "thank you very much," but the subtitles display this as "my father will go to me to Akashima."!<
 • Siege of Akashima / Act II spoilers >!After the mongols are driven out, Jin calls for the people to assist his uncle. A woman cries out, "samurai ga ja nai" which would mean "we are not samurai!" but the subtitles display "we are not warriors."!&l

Passed CLEP Spanish Language with a 75!

I'm feeling pretty great! The exam was at times difficult but I feel like my Spanish skills are validated as a non-native speaker.

Background

I took Spanish for 7 years in middle school and high school, including AP Spanish, but I graduated in 2016 and have not studied Spanish in a classroom setting since then. I have used Spanish sometimes since then for work, travel, and to talk to my girlfriend's Spanish-speaking family, but I don't speak on a regular basis. I knew that I would mess up some of the more complicated grammar rules and that I needed to review all of the verb conjugations.

Preparation

I primarily used the REI prep book to review grammar. On the first practice exam I scored an 80%. I also used the College Board sample test and scored an 86%, but this doesn't test your listening with recordings. I used some of the free exercises from studyspanish.com to practice verb conjugations and grammar rules.

Brits, I really wish you would chill with bashing American biscuits and biscuits & gravy. We get it. You have different things. We have different things. There's no battle for superiority here.

Whenever someone posts a picture of American biscuits or the dish 'biscuits and gravy', you all come out of the woodwork to throw shade. It'd be fine if it were just "taking the piss", but it usually turns to outright snobbery and condescension.

Having grown up in the American South, which does have its redeeming qualities--especially the food-- I would like to address your undeserved contempt.

The usual horses that you beat to death are:

Yes, things have different names. So what? We've gotten used to your 'crisps' and your 'chips', we understand it, and we're fine with it.

So it's bewildering when the term 'biscuits' used in the American sense draws such disdainful confusion from you all. Especially when I'm pretty sure you already know what the American term means and are just being purposefully obtuse in order to start an argument.

 • **Biscuits and gravy lo

Episode 6 Terra Nullius (Nobody’s Land)

Off we go to Australia to pick through what was in reality a highly successful Antipodean royal tour undertaken by the Prince and Princess of Wales in March 1983. They visited both Australia and New Zealand, and in a move from accustomed practice they took baby Prince William (born the previous June) with them.

The episode opens with Bob Hawke becoming Prime Minister (as indeed he did on 11 March 1983) and thus involved with the visit instead of the outgoing PM, Malcolm Fraser. Princess Margaret warns that there are problems in the Wales marriage – hint

Hi, has anyone ever used a closed captioning app, system, etc. for phone calls that don’t require you to be registered with hearing loss? My hearing is fine. 100% one ear, 96% in the other ear. However, I have a disease called Fibromyalgia, one of the side effects is Auditory Processing Disorder. My brain can’t translate what the person is saying to English, so it’s just sounds that I can’t understand. It’s like reading Russian when you learned through a dictionary one word at a time, I see the characters, I know they’re words, I know what each individual word means, but I can only focus on one word and can’t translate a full sentence. My professor has phone call exams that are done orally and I just did one today. I struggled so badly. I knew the material, I’ve studied for over a week for this test. It’s a simple subject. That’s not the issue. Once the exam started, my phone was clear, I could hear my professor just fine, but my mind couldn’t translate the sounds to words. That’s the

[Serious] How to stop feeling resentful towards deafness?

Coming from someone who:

 1. started to read books on his own at age 10. By the way, not many books.
 2. started to turn on the closed caption at age 13. That was when he realized people in tv talked differently than what people would talk to him.
 3. had little to no interaction with people, which led him to have delayed emotional intelligence.
 4. had not invested properly by teachers or parents to improve his English written. He went through schools learning on his own without understanding why grammar works that way or not.
 5. went through many different schools such as a deaf oral school, home school, mainstream schools x2, and then a deaf school for the last 2 and a half years before he graduated.

Fast forward to today.

 1. Just started to have an English tutor, and they are having a one-hour session per week. There are so many grammatical mistakes he made that he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN IN CHILDHOOD!
 2. Invested his time and energy by adding 13,000 idioms into his Anki deck (digit

NYXL vs. Chengdu: An Eastern Perspective

Shu: Holy Molly!

(This beautiful piece of art was created by GZC player SHU and posted on his Weibo following the match, with the caption: holy Molly! )

super TL;DR: Coaching Difference

Following my previous post on the possible Chengdu coach changes, I wanted to make a follow up post detailing some reasons how the NYXL lost to the Hunters, because it seems to me many fans are confused on exactly how NYXL “choked” (even Sideshow kappa?). So, I compiled some opinions of the Chinese Overwatch talent (casters, analysts, coaches) as to how Chengdu snatched the juicy victory. NOTE: None of these are my original opinions/analysis (because I am not qualified enough to have one), and I will link all my sources at the end of the post. **I just want to flesh out their arguments in a logical manner so that particularly the Western fans can have a better

AITA fir refusing to snitch on the person who made a viral meme about our school

Obligatory apologies for shit English and formatting, I'm foreign and on mobile and new to reddot

Someone at my school got rona. We dodnt know this but the school just made us all go home early and said school would be postponed until further notice. Fuck school admin for not telling us what's going on. One of the teachers kids told us what's happening so we knew someone in our grade got rona, we found out few weeks later who specifically got it. We all have the right to know who got rona and what's happening for our safety, mainly so we know to be careful and make judgements on self quarantining. Scholl would later come out and say it's so we dont bully the victim, but the thing is everyone wss super supportive of him and wishing him a well recovery once we knew it was him

One of my classmates made a bunch of memes insulting the stupid policies admin but the one that was really popular was our class photo with the caption "crewmate there is one imposter among us" which is a refere

Hoshi, Jun, DK, Josh ELLE Korea Interview - Full Translation.

The Soompi article was a summary and translated only a few of the answers so I decided to translate it here!

JUN

Q. We noticed you taking photos on set.
JUN: It's my way of documenting my life. I take photos when I'm working and when I'm resting, like a diary to chronicle my days. The nice photos out of the ones I take, I share on Twitter or Weibo with Carats. I tend to think a lot about what to write when I write text, so I choose to upload photos instead.

Q. What's made you most happy recently?
JUN: We held our 4th fan meeting, SVT in Caratland, online recently. It was an opportunity for all of us to meet our Carats through the screen with an all-member choreography, and that made me really happy. I gained a lot of energy from it even though we weren't able to meet them in person.

Q. You make people laugh with your quirkiness. Are you normally mischievous?
JUN: I often ask questions to myself. I love reading novels and I like to ask mysel

Comparing the different editions of Maison Ikkoku

(TLDR at the bottom!)

As you may know, Maison Ikkoku Collector's Edition, Vol. 1 is out today, September 15, 2020. And...

Rumiko Takahashi's Maison Ikkoku is my favorite manga to date, but better writers than I can sell you on why the manga is worth your time. My main concern is—as a fan who has read the story multiple times and presently holds an incomplete, complete set of the series—should I pay attention to this new release?

AITA for treating one of my closest friends differently?

So I have this friend, let's call her Jean. We met freshman year of high school in English class, and while we sadly never really became friends, and while I actually did want to be friends with her long after graduation since I then realized how much we had in common, I eventually rejoined facebook after having deleted my old account, friended her, and was pleasantly shocked when 2 years ago, she reached out via messenger, and that's basically what started our friendship. I was super greatful for it, since I had struggled with friends in high school a lot-not trying to give out too much personal information, but one of the high schools in my district closed due to financial complications (another long story), forcing a bunch of my friends to move schools. I was pretty much alone for a good part of senior year, missing out on events like senior night and prom, which messed with my mental health. I started college with higher hopes, attending a small community college prior to trans

WIBTA if I don't help my friend during his upcoming meeting?

In a few hours my (19F) friend (20M) has a meeting during which he will be evaluated to see if he can get a position on a national scale in my country's IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students Association). Because his English isn't the best, he asked for my help to prepare for this meeting. The position obviously means the world to him.

I woke up early today to go through the documents and help him prepare but found a video of a half naked belly dancer he had sent me during the night. He captioned it with "This is how real women look. Don't call yourself a woman when you look the way you do."

He knows I struggle with very low self esteem and a restrictive eating disorder. He knows my ED is fuelled by feeling inferior to others and incompetence. He does this very often, almost on a daily basis and it hurts every single time. He also would publicly shame me and put me down for the sake of a few laughs. All this triggers my ED and self destructive behaviour.

I ended up

Burmese Way to Socialism : A Peculiar Case of Non-Aligned Socialism in the 20th Century

Background

First and foremost, I think it is important to talk briefly about the historical context of Burma/Myanmar leading up to our "socialist" period. My country was locked in feudalism for centuries full of dynasties rising and falling apart. Thus the "historical borders" of Burma varied according to dynasty (Byintnaung's Taunggu dynasty stretches all the way from Manipur into Laos for example). This will come back later on but in order to reduce wall of text, I'll give the history before independence and the communist insurgency in the comment below. Lastly, I wanted to point out that in my opinion the ethnic composition of modern Burma after gaining independence could be compared with to that of the Kingdom of Hungary before the Treaty of Trianon. Burmese people made up about 60-70% of the population across country but there are still major ethnic groups that populates a large number of their own lands. [[ An ethnolinguistic map of Burma (note: A number of ethnic minorit
