Calcium Carbonate in Pour Over to cut acidity. I tried it and it was pretty good! Is this a known thing?

There’s no way I’m the first person to try this. This morning I brewed my normal pour over and because I just happened to have a tub of calcium carbonate handy I mixed 1/4 teaspoon of it in with my grounds. It made for a smoother, less acidic taste and brought out some other flavors in the coffee I hadn’t noticed before. Has anyone else tried this or something similar? Does anyone have links to other rabbit holes I could follow about tweaking coffee chemistry?

No correlation beteween pH and rate of reaction, calcium carbonate with various acids?

Sorry I am awful at chemistry, don't even take it but my biology essay has ended up relying heavily on it and am worryingly late and confused.

I was measuring the gas produced by the reaction of calcium carbonate with various acids,

CaCO3(s) + 2 H+(aq) β†’ Ca2+(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

I was under the impression a lower pH reacting with calcium carbonate would have less of a reaction than a higher pH due to more hydrogen ions but doesn't seem to be the case.

Graph is incomplete y axis is gas produced and x is time in seconds,

Any suggestions really appreciated, sorry if it's a silly question or obvious.

Encouraging growth of organisms that make calcium carbonate shells for carbon capture?

So, this is something I've never heard suggested, and I'm sure there are reasons why it wouldn't work since it isn't something I have heard spoken about (I'm thinking maybe insufficient calcium in the oceans, or it being far too slow) but I'm not certain about either of these.

So, could this work? And since the answer is almost certainly no (otherwise people would be talking about it) why doesn't it work?

Sincerely a curious and slightly uneducated redditor.

Potassium Silicate & Calcium Carbonate A Better Way to Raise pH

For a long time you have been told potassium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide are the go to pH up minerals for pH up. While this does change the pH efficiently it doesn’t provide much benefit to the plants. This thinking was based on old hydroponic chemistry mostly based around chemistry models that had nothing to do with growing anything at all and more to do with just changing the pH. While it does accomplish the goal there are far more beneficial ways to adjust pH for aquaponics.

The much better way to adjust your pH is by alternating Potassium Silicate and Calcium Carbonate which both provide 2 benefits to your plants instead of one.

Potassium Silicate increases your silica levels which are almost universally deficient in aquaponic systems. Silica should be maintained above 60 ppms to ensure proper plant health and disease resistance in aquaponics. When above this threshold it dramatically increases disease resistance, increase crispness and longer storage time by as much as 7 days, reduce heat and cold stress including longer time to bolt on lettuce, and improved system health. It also adds additional potassium as well while raising pH similarly to other options. Potassium bicarbonate can also be used in a pinch to further boost alkalinity when needed.

Calcium Carbonate adds calcium and carbon to the water increasing your calcium and helping your microbes replicate far better than hydroxide. If you alkalinity (dissolved carbonate) gets to low is slows down microbial replication hamstringing your system.

This is why hydroxides while great for chemistry are a poor choice for aquaponics. By switching your pH up combo you can improve system health dramatically while reducing monthly costs on a range of related expenses.

Had pain in my chest region with workouts for years. Got checked by a cardiologist a few times, everything turned out normal. Then Endoscopy found I had GERD with severe irritation. Solved pain with morning workouts on an empty stomach with Calcium Carbonate.

So as the title says... working out used to be a painful beast or meant a slow pace. I would have a burning pain in my esophagus and some burping occasionally. After consulting a cardiologist a few expensive times, I was fortunate to find out that everything was normal and that my pain was likely coming from something else. I was encouraged to get an endoscopy and bingo, there it was.

I had an extremely irritated esophagus. Initially my docs wanted me to do a PPI like nexium or etc. The side effects made it less than appealing so I started pursuing another route.

I tried and elimination diet and kept a journal. I made observations of my triggers and have built up a menu of things I know I can do and a list I try to avoid or go into knowing that my pain is GERD.

One side effect of this is that I realized that my workouts are easier in the morning on an empty stomach. After a certain point though that same old burning pain would come. As a coincidence of trying to get more calcium in my diet I was looking into supplements and found one that was just calcium carbonate and d3. So I thought it might work as an antacid, and it did but it wasn’t ideal for taking with food for all those chemical calcium reasons. So I decided to see what would happen if I took it in the morning on an empty stomach.

I was already working out each morning with an hour long cycling class so I took it beforehand. This unintentional timing has liberated me from my GERD pain interfering in my workouts and I am at a whole new level of fit.

I’ve been taking a 600mg calcium carbonate with 10mcg of D3 about 15 mins before my workouts everyday.

100% takes care of my burping and acid reflux during the workout. Which means no pain!

Just wanted to share. I hope some of you can benefit if it’s something that might work for you.
