Ions, acids, compounds

As before, while the behavior of all molecules is rooted in the orbital structure and electron dynamics, it is convenient to define broad categories of molecules that behave in similar ways. In the past and in the absence of any way to determine precise structures, molecular behavior was essentially all that previous chemists had to work with. Despite the psychological weight of all the work that has been performed making categorizations and trying to fit all known compounds into a few well-defined categories, the reality of chemistry is and always has been messy. With that in mind, let’s talk about ions, acids, and compounds.

First up, I should spell out the difference between an element, a molecule, a compound, a substance, a chemical, and however else you want to refer to things. An atom of an element has a distinct atomic number, a distinct number of protons, and in the neutral and ground state (uncharged and in the lowest possible energy electron configuration) has a distinct orbital and electronic structure. It is of course possible to have many atoms of the same element as well as different numbers of neutrons in/isotopes of the same element, but (ie) a boron atom is going to have fundamentally different bonding properties than a carbon atom or any other atom. Once you start bonding atoms together, you end up with molecules that have distinct structures, molecular orbitals, and chemical behaviors. There will of course be similarities between similar molecules, but a molecule of methane (CH4) is different than one of ethane (C2H6 or H3C-CH3) or one of propane (C3H8 or H3C-CH2-CH3). Continuing with the hydrocarbons, once you get to four carbons (C4H10) and above it is possible to have multiple configurations of the main carbon chain, so technically you would need to distinguish between butane (historically unbranched/normal/n-butane) and 2-methylpropane (historically isobutane/i-butane). However, we are now getting into the different isomers (butane, 2-methylpropane) of the same chemical formula (C4H10) instead of sticking with the idea of compounds. So, I would define a compound as a unique three dimensional arrangement of atoms, but trying to describe a three-dimensional and possibly quite complicated shape

(Almost) Everything you need to know about the 24K Gold Foil Moisturizer (research based on readily available consumer resources)

**** Edit: here’s the link to the photo of the box showing they use the cruelty free logo. https://mercari-images.global.ssl.fastly.net/photos/m19432458330_3.jpg?1581113303

Here’s the TL;DR in case you don’t read this at all:

This is based on stuff I could readily find online.

Faccia Skin’s cruelty-free status cannot be verified.

Basic judgement says that this product is safe to use, unless you are sensitive to fragrances or other ingredients on this list, react to comedogenic products, or have fungal acne.

We can expect for this product to perform as it claims based on its ingredients. It is unlikely that gold provides any notable benefits.

The retail price of $100 is not justified by any ingredients or similar product retail prices.

************

This is going to be long, but with everything going around about this moisturizer, I thought it was important to do some actual research on this product and its claims. There are a few things I want to clear up before I start:

- This is not a post to start drama or to say bad things about Boxycharm OR Faccia Skin. This is simply research on the claims of the product and whether or not there is evidence that these claims are true. I intend to make NO speculations about this and only present the facts as I can find them (and cite them). If I do make any speculations, please call me out for it and I will remove them.

- I am not going to tell you whether or not to use this product. This is just the information I think you should have to make an educated decision for yourself.

- I have no stake in this product and hope that makes me as unbiased as possible. I don’t receive premium, and I don’t intend to buy. None of what I say here is based on my experience with the product OR any reviews of the product.

Finally, the intention of this is to investigate these claims based on being an β€œaverage consumer.” I know that the actual average consumer does not actually do this much research. What I mean by this is that all this information comes from available online databases and resources, and the first couple pages of Google. I’m not doing a deep dive into any Instagram pages or people’s private lives to find this information. I intend for all of it to be easily verifiable by anyone who wants to find it.

I will investigate 4 things about this product: cruelty free claims, safety of ingredients, benefit claims, and retail value.

Cruelty Free Claims:

Top cleansers by skin type

Combination/Oily skin

Youth To The People Kale + Green Tea Cleanser

"I love this one because it really does a good job of just getting all the dirt and grime out of your skin, but doesn't leave your skin feeling dry and tight afterwards. It's an amazing cleaner." (https://youtu.be/OXsS7HNN0O4)

Earth to Skin Super Greens Face Cleanser

"I really like this one. First off because of the price point. It has a lot of really good ingredients. It has glycerin, as well as coco-glucaside, as well as cucumber, brocolli, and kale extracts, all of which are natural soothing and hydrating extracts that I personally found really worked for my skin. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does have fragrance and dyes, but I personally don't find those ingredients to be problematic in cleansers because it's a wash-off treatment. This one is really effective; it does a good job of cleaning my skin while not overly stripping it, and not overly drying my dry areas on the face which is why it's a really good match for combination skin." (https://youtu.be/wTXmkn6B7dI)

CeraVe Renewing Salicylic Acid Cleanser

"I personally really like this cleanser because it's very gentle, but really effective at targeting what a cleanser for oily breakout prone skin should. It's not too harsh. It has gentle surfactents as well as glycerin, niacinimide which is really going to help for that redness and irritation as well as sebum production, salicylic acid which is the star ingredient for getting deep into the pore and pushing out all the dirt and dead skin cells to make sure that you don't break out again, as well as a ceramide complex, and hyalauronic acid. It's just such a good ingredient list. It's a little bit more expensive for a cleanser, but in my opinion it's totally worth it if you really want to see good results." Thoughts on latest test results of TrueTerps Viscousity/Thread locked on Future4200

Figured this was a good place as any to discuss the True Terpenes drama.

I saw this on icMag this morning, and noticed that Future4200 had premptively locked the thread on their website, despite this being the first real movement in the drama I have witnessed in a moment, and from a source of untarnishable repute, at least to me personally. I learned how to extract with butane from Skunk Pharm's original blog, and hold a great deal of respect for GW.

So, what do you all think? Will you continue using TrueTerps? Do you find them trustworthy?

Personally, I have to admit I love the drama, but as a point of truth, I've used TrueTerp products and dilutent in the past, and their cookie cut response, coupled with the multiple rewrites of the dilutent description on their website, doesn't smell right. Even my popcorn munching can't distract me from the feeling of fuckery, both potentially by TrueTerps, but also ExtractNinja, although the latter currently appears vindicated...

I also don't find Future4200 to be a honest actor in this either. He has consistently played defensive cheerleader for TT, and truth be told, he would be motivated too. He's an odd fellow, and I love his approach to sharing information, but he's betraying that same ethos that attracted me by defending a hidden formula that at best isn't terpenes but is still safe to vape, and at worse, some strange mineral oil and squalene mixture. The locking of the thread on his website, after what represents a large development from a known and trusted actor, is fucking weird. Cannabis extract discussion often attracts heated dialogue and insults, and we are no stranger to it here, so that is not a sufficient reason to block discussion... so here we are!

Keep the discussion respectful, but roasting is okay, and seeming more appropriate as time goes on and new test results arrive.

Green Thumb Industries: a closer look

Green Thumb Industries

The purpose of this document is to find value within GTBIF by looking at where GTI operates, how they operate and identify any catalysts that might launch this little giant into orbit. Lets begin...

Current standings

Β· Vertically integrated

Β· Controls and operates 100% of the production supply chain

Β· Does not strive to be long-term cannabis farmers

Β· Anticipates that specialization and consolidation along the supply chain will force out high-cost providers

Β· Develops, manufactures and distributes a portfolio of branded cannabis products including brands rythm , and Dogwalkers, among others, to its retail partners, some of which GTI owns as a chain of retail stores called RISE

Β· Placement of its branded cannabis products in 97 out of 97 open and operating stores in the Corporation’s markets currently selling wholesale (Illinois and Maryland)

Β· GTI owns and operates a 50-store national chain of retail stores called RISE Dispensaries with mature revenue

Β· 13 stores open and operating and with 20+ open stores expected by the end of calendar year 2018

Β· Focuses on limited licensed markets where competition is more limited than other markets. (less competition means more profit to be captured)

Β· Product categories including: flower, concentrates for dabbing and for vaporizing (including disposable and pre-filled cartridges), topicals (bath and beauty products), and edibles (confection, beverages, snacks)

Β· GTI is driving down cost of goods by expanding capacity in its most mature facility and currently they are under construction and building additional indoor cultivation space

Let's jump right into the battlegrounds and take a closer look..

Illinois

Β· Population of 13M

Β· Very limited in license

Β· IL (20 wholesale) / GTI (2 wholesale)

Β· IL (60 retail) / GTI (4 retail)

Β· Owns and controls two of the 20 (2/20) cultivation/processing licenses issued as well as four of the 60 (4/60) retail dispensary licenses issued to service the entire state of over 12 million residents

Β· Retail market size for 2017 was over US$85 million, representing an over 140% year over-year increase. In the first three calendar months of 2018, recorded state-wide sales are already over 1/3 of the total market size for all of 2017

Β· In Illinois, GTI was the first to sell cannabis to retail consumers on the first day of the program in November 2015

Β· IL was the largest contributor of GTI's revenue for 2017, will be a large contributor in

How much gas/day in freezing?

Looking at doing an approx week long hike in Patagonia and want to have enough supplies to last 8 or 9 days. Food I can work out but can anyone give an indication how many gas canisters I'll need for cooking and melting snow for water (inc hot drinks) if I take a bunch of 230g 80:20 butane/propane mix cans?

Is there a rough formula per day/person for say an average temperature around -5C? I'll be between 1000m and 2,500m elevation.

Or, would the recommendation be to use liquid fuels?

Thanks heaps

EDIT: Sorry, after some more research, I think my question might be just a little too open. Thanks to [this site] (https://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com.au/2016/12/gas-stoves-in-cold-weather-regulator.html) (well-known reddit member, I believe), I think a regulated upright stove would be the go - let's assume the Soto Windmaster as Jim recommends

As for use, let's assume 2 hot meals (simple dehydrated), 500ml of hot drinks, 2l of water per day. All from melting snow

Eutylone (bk-EBDB, N-Ethylbutylone) Experience Report

Eutylone is also known as bk-EBDB or N-Ethylbutylone.

IUPAC Name: 1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-2-(ethylamino)butan-1-one

Molecular Formula: C13H17NO3

Molecular Weight: 235.283 g/mol

CAS number: 802855-66-9 / 17764-18-0 Hcl

Experience:

The Eutylone appeared as one very large, dense, clear-white chunk. The scent/flavor from intranasal administration was reminiscent of the scent/flavor of 4-CMC, 3-CMC, or 3-MMC... I've had the pleasure to sample almost every substituted cathinone since the disappearance of 4-MMC. From my memory, the flavour of Eutylone is very similar to that of 4-CMC.

I began by allergy testing dosages ranging from 100mcg to 15 mg over the course of 48 hours.

After feeling comfortable with the substance, I sampled a ~35 mg dose.

Very light mental stimulation, with a very faint warmth in the body. Smooth, and subtle.

I got around to testing a more recreational dosage just two days ago. I reached a total dosage of 200 mg over the course of 3 hours.

I began by weighing out 150 mg bk-EBDB and crushed it to a fine powder.

T-0:00: ~50 mg insufflated. Very little discomfort noted. Scent/flavour reminiscent of 4-CMC/3-CMC. Slight cooling sensation noted in sinuses.

T+0:15: Slight mood boost, with gentle tingles of warmth in the body. I also feel more aware of my surroundings. Very subtle so far.

T+0:25: The effects of the Eutylone seemed to have reached a peak. Definitely feels a tad serotonergic. Subtle, warm tingles throughout the body.

T+0:45: So far, Eutylone seems to be rather gentle and calm. No intense physical stimulation to be found at a 50 mg dosage. The most prominent effects would be a slight tingling warmth, gently flowing through the body. Mentally, I feel slightly more aware of my surroundings, and I'm generally feeling a bit uplifted.

T+ 1:15: ~50 mg administered intranasally. Still not much discomfort noted with this route of administration.

T+1:35: Feeling the effects of the second dose ramp up. More warm, but subtle tingling in my body. Heart rate seems to be a bit... Different. My heart rate does not seem to have increased or decreased, although, I can feel it beating more prominently, if that makes any sense. I know the feeling of high blood pressure all too well, and the feeling I'm having in my chest is similar, yet dissimilar to the feeling of increased blood pressure.

T+2:00: ~50 mg insufflated. Hoping to ramp up the effects to a fully recreational spectrum.

T+2:25:

$2,000/month selling handcrafted metal drums.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.

Today's interview is with Oran of Goya, a brand that sells handcrafted metal drums

Some stats:

  • Product: Handcrafted metal drums
  • Revenue/mo: $2,000
  • Started: August 2018
  • Location: Dublin
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0

Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?

Hello, my name is Oran and I handcraft steel tongue drums used by musicians and also for sound therapy/meditation. The tongues or notes are tuned in a way that they all resonate with each other making it very easy to create alluring melodies, when the tongue is hit with you finger or a mallet, it vibrates creating sound waves. There is a hole underneath allowing sound to escape. No musical background is needed to play, so they are suitable for all ages and abilities.

All of the drums have nice artwork painted on them so they nearly double up as a nice ornament.

Sales vary from month to month but tend to average out at $2000 a month from my website www.goya.ie. I’m continually creating new designs and experimenting with sounds which is a perfect way for me to spend my time.

image

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

I had traveled to the Amazon rainforest in Peru a while ago to partake in some tribal ceremonies and stayed in there for a week.

On one of the days I took place in a sound bath where Tibetan bowls and other instruments were played to help induce a relaxing, meditative experience. I was expecting nothing more than some enjoyable tones and melodies, but a few minutes after relaxing and closing my eyes, I became immersed in a sea of bliss. After the sound bath ended I felt refreshed, positive, and energised! A new connection to sound and music was made and a new passion grew inside me.

Upon returning home I found out about handpans, big metal percussion instruments that emitted beautiful tones for meditative music. The only downside was the price tag of 2000 euros.

While I scoured the web looking for cheaper alternatives, I discovered steel tongue drums (often called tank drums) that had a reasonable price tag. I inspected one in a music shop and realised that I could probably make my own if I wanted to.

I have a professional background in metalworking and welding. I also have a backgrou

"WD-40 is not a lube"

Ignoring that "omg, technically it's a 'lube' because it reduces friction. water can be considered a 'lube' too," what exactly makes WD-40 a bad lube, chain or otherwise?

I don't know the formulation for other chain lubes, but they generally* seem to consist of (1) the main lubricating oil/wax/crazy-polymer suspended in (2) some solvent to thin the solution and help it penetrate into small crevasses. To my knowledge, this is what WD-40 is: mineral spirits, some thin oil, and prolellants.

I understand that the oil is probably lighter than other chain lubes, but would that really mean you'd have to reapply/clean more often than a dry lube, for example?

*"generally" meaning 3 only data points: diy chain lube formulas, aerosol Triflow description, me thinking that Finish Line Dry Teflon "smells volatile."

Edit: I'd like to stress that from my brief research, WD-40 has a similar broad formulation to other bike chain-specific lubes. I'd like to discuss mainly what makes WD-40 different from these other lubes. Yes, I know solvents are great at breaking down grease. Yes, I know WD-40 historically stands for the 40th formulation of a "water displacing" solution.

The by-weight breakdown according to various material safety data specs.

Why Hennessey Isn't a Modern Shelby

Note: this is an amateur article. I'd love some feedback. I have transcribed the post here so I can get feedback without fear of being accused of blogspam. I'm a snarky 19 year old, so keep that in mind, but hold me to a high standard.

-

Go on. Ask any preteen today what the fastest car in the world is. Assuming they don’t wrinkle their brow and look back down at their phone while taking a few hasty steps away from you, they will answer Hennessey Venom GT.

Pic 1 - Hennessey Venom GT

The Venom GT is a butane-breathing beast with 1200 horsepowerβ€” enough to tire out a whole catalog of metaphors. Speaking of tire, it can light up its rears in as high as 4th gear. Some journalists bring along second and third pairs of pants when driving one for the first and second time, and need a cigarette afterward, all the while muttering to themselves, β€œnever in my life…” All of this is the flagship project of the head honcho of Hennessey Performance: John Hennessey himself.

Today, Hennessey is doing the same tried-and-true method of going knuckle-whiteningly fast in a straight line: put a 7.0L V8 into a small, lightweight British car. The late Carroll Shelby helped cement his legacy with the Cobra 427 S/C, which had, yes, a 7.0L V8. Both make more power than is thought to be possible, and accelerate hard enough to leave smoky outlines of themselves behind, a la Looney Tunes. Both are (or, were, in Carroll’s case) made by Texans and driven by A-list celebrities: Steve McQueen owned a Cobra with the 289ci engine, and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith has a Venom GT Spyder.

Pic 2 - Shelby Cobra Coupe

The commonality, however, stops there. The Cobra was not just a fast road carβ€” it was a Le Mans competitor in its day, and the exceedingly rare Daytona Coupe was based upon the Cobra’s platform. It competed directly with the infamously quick Ferrari 250 GTO. But the Venom is no world-class racer, nor is it even legally its own car. To the Department of Motor Vehicles and insurance companies, it is nothing more than a Lotus Exigeβ€” a car costing less than a twentieth the price of the Venom. Hennessey aficionados are quick to point out that the car is nearly scratch-built from the ground up, and it shares only some parts from the Lotus it is based on.

By some parts, they mean the floorpan, doors, roof, all windows, dashboard,

A (non-comprehensive) overview of Sulforaphane and Nrf2: Feel free to add more!

Disclaimer: This is not medical advice and is not intended to prevent, treat or cure any disease, condition or syndrome; this is a research summary and should be taken as such. Also I apologize for formatting errors- for now I am leaving the citations as numerals but this can be adjusted if need be

Summary: Sulforaphane (SFN) in a plant derived compound (phytochemical) present in cruciferous vegetables, most notably broccoli (Brassica oleracea) and broccoli sprouts. SFN is a small molecular weight (molecular weight = 177.29) lipophilic organosulfur compound or isothiocyanate (1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl)butane) currently under investigation for both therapeutic and prophylactic applications due its ability to activate Nrf2 and the body’s internal antioxidant system (1). SFN has been the subject of numerous in vitro and in vivo studies; however conclusive research to establish effective dose, compound preparation, bioavailability, safety and clinical efficacy has not yet been completed (studies ongoing)(13).

Mechanism of action: SFN induces cellular and systemic effects through activation of the transcription factor Nrf2. Nrf2 is one of the most significant regulators of the body’s internal antioxidant system. Under basal conditions, Nrf2 is bound by an inhibitory partner called Keap1 in the cytoplasm. Upon encountering cellular stress (oxidative stress, electrophiles, radiation) Nrf2 is released from Keap1 and translocates/migrates to the nucleus. In the nucleus Nrf2 binds to sites in the DNA called AREs (antioxidant response elements). These ARE sites direct transcription of a broad range of antioxidant genes and ultimately induce upregulation/enhancement of a cell’s internal antioxidant system (more detail below).

All cells in the body contain an innate/endogenous antioxidant system. Cells experience stressful stimuli and must be equipped with a system to adapt to and overcome these stressors (oxidative stress, proteotoxic stress, thermal stress, mechanical stress, metabolic stress etc). To overcome stressful stimuli cells initiate the production of enzymes to mitigate oxidative stress/radical oxygen species (ROS) and non-enzymatic compounds that help scavenge ROS. These enzymes include catalase (CAT; eliminates hydrogen peroxide), superoxide dismutase (SOD; eliminates superoxide), various conjugation enzymes (link or conjugate drugs to compounds like glutathione to detoxify and eliminate them) and glutathione synthesis enzym

How do chemist get specific bonds/structures to form?

-For example how would they create a specific hydrocarbon, and not one of its isomers? I'm having a hard time understanding. I'm new to chemistry.

-How would they form Butane and not Iso-butane. Not sure if you could create those artificially, but speaking hypothetically how would scientist create butane and avoid making isomers of butane since their formulas and amount of components are equal?

Edit: Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Chemist here: here is proof that smoking from aluminum will not cause you to inhale any significant amount of aluminum

First, let’s look at some temperatures to see what we expect a lighter and our herb to burn at. http://www.derose.net/steve/resources/engtables/flametemp.html

Ok, so based on the match temperature and cigarette temperature, let’s say a maximum of 800 C. (Note: some of you will notice there is butane/air on this list that says 1977 C. This is for a butane blow torch, not a lighter. If your bic could get that hot you could melt glass with it.)

Now let’s look at the vapor pressure of aluminum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium

The lowest temperature listed is 1482 K (1209 C) with a vapor pressure of 1 Pa. Let’s go ahead and be generous and assume you might reach this temperature on your aluminum (you won't). Atmospheric pressure is 101,325 Pa. So by pressure, this would be 0.00001% aluminum.

Still not convinced? The average male lung capacity of 3.3 L. Using the molar volume of a gas (22.4 L/mol), we can determine that on a hit, this male would take in 0.15 moles of gas. 0.00001% of this would be aluminum in our scenario, which would be 1.5 x 10^-8 moles of aluminum. Using the molar mass of aluminum (26.98 g/mol), we find that this corresponds to 3.97 x 10^-7 grams of aluminum per hit (0.000397 mg). To put this in perspective, the average US concentration of aluminum in tap water is 0.16 mg/liter. So if you drank a liter of water, you’d have to take over 400 hits to get the same amount of aluminum. Additionally, in industrialized areas, the aluminum concentration in the air is 0.001 mg/m^3.

Source for aluminum levels: http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/chemicals/en/aluminium.pdf

Considering it’s extremely unlikely you’d even reach these temperatures, and this is a highly idealized scenario, I think you are pretty safe smoking from aluminum.

EDIT: Concerning the combustion of aluminum. Yes, aluminum does oxidize. But that doesn't mean applying heat to it is going to burn aluminum and release Al2O3 vapor. If someone can provide the energetics of of the oxidation of aluminum and be like "Hey bro, it's totally burning at smoking temperature!" I'll buy it, but just throwing up a reaction formula is meaningless without the context of energy behind it. Additionally, as ColdHardDrugScience mentioned, Al2O3 isn't the best thing to inhale, but it is also chemically inert, and the small amounts you might inhale likely wouldn't cause any problems.

EDIT2: One thing I have thought about, **if you are actually heating your aluminum foil to

Hoja Boricua Toro

So I've gotten in two discussions in the past couple of weeks about Puerto Rican cigars, one of which was with /u/ZMan941 about some Hoja Boricua and 965 cigars that we both brought back from Puerto Rico. He had smoked two of his, with less than stellar results, and I had been holding onto mine for four years, and was debating between smoking them and comparing experiences, or holding onto them as a memento of my last (thus far) trip to Puerto Rico. The other conversation was with /u/Fishon888 about some Casa Bacardi cigars I brought back from that same trip, with him challenging me to smoke one rather than hoarding them.

So I had two Hoja Boricuas, two 965s, and three Casa Bacardis, along with a couple of Don Collins left over from that same trip, and decided to smoke one last night. Through a series of complicated mathematical computations, algorithms, and formulas, I chose the Hoja Boricua Toro (the standard issue, not the Gran Reserva) as a result of that complicated analysis (translation: it was the one I stumbled across first upon opening a random Tupperdor).

ZMan got burning plastic and bitterness, so I was prepared for the worst, and was pleasantly surprised. It was actually a pretty damn good cigar! I had heard about these after my next-to-last trip to Puerto Rico and before my last trip, so I was on the lookout for these on my last trip. A trip to Cigar House of Puerto Rico on Fortaleza Street in Old Town San Juan yielded one of the 965s, and I picked up a three pack at the airport as I was leaving that contained the other 965, and the two Hoja Boricuas (the Casa Bacardis had come from the Bacardi factory tour, and the Don Collins had come from the Don Collins shop). This Hoja Boricua was from the airport three-pack, same as he had gotten.

Pre-light aroma and cold draw both yielded hay and barnyard; clean barnyard, not any kind of manure smell, like freshly laid hay.

Punched it with the punch on the bottom of a new Jet Line Gotham lighter I had just gotten yesterday (thanks, GF!) and off I went.

Lit it with my Jet Line NY as I had not yet filled the Gotham with Butane, and it lit immediately with no trouble. Burn line started out straight, stayed straight the entire time, and the cigar held a several-inch ash each time.

First third DID taste like the hay from the cold draw, but a sweet hay like this Sweet Timothy Hay I used to feed my rabbits when I had some. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the sweetness, and found it enjoya

Updates to isotope - a library for calculating masses of elements and molecules.

I have recently made some improvements and bug fixes to isotope. This library uses quasi-quotes to make working with chemical formulae easy for anyone with a basic understanding of chemistry. For example -

ghci> let butane = [con|CH3(CH2)2CH3|]
ghci> renderFormula butane
"CH3(CH2)2CH3"
ghci> renderFormula $ toMolecularFormula butane
"C4H10"
ghci> renderFormula $ toEmpiricalFormula butane
"C2H5"

Isotope can also support deep nesting within condensed formulae -

ghci> let triisopropylamine = [con|N(CH(CH3)2)3|]

Isotope provides functionality to calculate isotopic, integer, monoisotopic, nominal and average masses -

ghci> monoisotopicMass triisopropylamine
MonoisotopicMass {getMonoisotopicMass = 143.16739968126}
ghci> averageMass triisopropylamine
AverageMass {getAverageMass = 143.27008211723435}

When using this library, you could do something like -

data FattyAcyl = FattyAcyl {
    carbons     :: Int
  , doubleBonds :: Int
} deriving (Show, Eq, Ord)

instance ToElementalComposition FattyAcyl where
toElementalComposition (FattyAcyl cs dbs) = mkElementalComposition
    [ (C, cs)
    , (H, cs * 2 + 1 - dbs * 2)
    , (O, 2)
    ]

That should give you a brief taste of the kind of things you can (now) do with isotope. Please feel free to check out the readme for more details.

[Table] IAmA: I just drove 3121 miles solo from Mexico to Canada in a Tesla Model S Electric car. No gas. No fuel cost. AMA

Verified? (This bot cannot verify AMAs just yet)

Date: 2013-11-28

Link to submission (Has self-text)

Questions Answers
It is an AMA, so can you please give me your car? Out of my ... cold ... dead ... hands.
Who paid for the electricity? Tesla makes the juice free to Model S drivers. Quite nice of them. The charging infrastructure is kinda like a part of the vehicle.
What problems do electric cars have? The Tesla Model S performed perfectly. So this vehicle did everything it was supposed to. The chief problem with EVs overall, however, is fueling. Finding places in public to charge quickly. The word "quickly" is important. The public EV charging stations out there are overwhelmingly (99%) the "Level 2" type that take 4+ hours to charge a smaller capacity battery like those found in a Nissan LEAF. The LEAF range is under 100 miles per charge. So you can see the issue. Imagine you wanted to take a 200 mile journey. You have to plan for a wicked charging layover.
Teslas have bigger batteries. The Tesla Superchargers charge the Model S to a 200+ mile range in a little over 30 minutes. Tesla provides the juice free to Tesla owners. They just recently (October 31) opened up a corridor from Mexico to Canada making the trip I took possible.
Its been my understanding that some of the Tesla charging stations are not connected to the grid and rely solely on the sun and batteries. If this is true, have you ever encountered a completely dry charging station and found yourself fucked? Not so far. I have run into dead chargers at a site, and a charger that seemed to be running at half speed, but I have never been stranded. My use of fast chargers before this trip wasn't extensive ... maybe 8-10 times.
The only solar powered (or aided?) Supercharger I have seen so far is the Hawthorne station by LAX on the SpaceX campus.

Erythritol 1g - Erythritol ((2R,3S)-butane-1,2,3,4-tetraol) is a sugar alcohol (or polyol) that has been approved for use as a food additive in the United States and throughout much of the world. In general, erythritol is free of side effects in regular use. Doses over 50 grams (1.8 oz) can cause a significant increase in nausea and stomach rumbling (borborygmi). Rarely, erythritol can cause allergic hives (urticaria).

When compared with other sugar alcohols, it is also much more difficult for intestinal bacteria to digest, so is less likely to cause gas or bloating than other polyols, such as maltitol, sorbitol, or lactitol.

Niacin 100% - Niacin (also known as vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid) is an organic compound with the formula C6H5NO2 and, depending on the definition used, one of the 20 to 80 essential human nutrients.

Not enough niacin in the diet can cause nausea, skin and mouth lesions, anemia, headaches, and tiredness. Chronic Niacin deficiency leads to a disease called pellagra.

However, too much is also bad. Pharmacological doses of niacin (1.5 - 6 g per day) lead to side effects that can include dermatological conditions such as skin flushing and itching, dry skin, and skin rashes including eczema exacerbation and acanthosis nigricans.

Vitamin B6 100% - The primary role of vitamin B6 is to act as a coenzyme to many other enzymes in the body that are involved predominantly in metabolism.

There were lots of fancy words here I didnt get, but I get the feeling its to help you metabolize sugar and to give your body quicker, more immediate access to the energy in the drink.

Answer Check Please

Hey guys, could you look over my answers and give me feedback on their accuracy? Cheers.

OPTION 1: Glutamic Acid: H I HOOC - C - NH2 I CH2 I CH2 I COOH

  1. (A) Glutamic acid (shown here) has two acidic groups, one on each end. (Couldn't capture the molecular photo)

(i) What is the hybridization and bond angle of the C atom attached to the N atom? sp3, 109.5 degrees (ii) What is the hybridization and bond angle of the C atoms that are attached to the oxygen atoms? sp2, 120 degrees (B) Glutamic acid has two pKa values. (2.10 and 4.07) Would the 2.10 value go with the acid group on the top or on the bottom? Explain what causes your selection to have that value instead of the other value? The top carboxylic acid group has a pKa value of 2.10 due to an inductive effect the nearby amino group N.

(C) (i)The molecule pentanol also has five carbon atoms like glutamic acid. It’s molecular formula is shown here. Note it has an OH group on one end, also like glutamic acid. Briefly explain why pentanol does not behave like an acid (what is it about the two structures that causes the big difference)?

Alcohols are much less acidic than carbolxylic acids due to the relative instability of their conjugate base (anion form) compared to carboxylic acids. C. acid anions end in COO- groups which allow for greater delocalization of charge over the O's. Two equally stable resonance structures are possible for carboxylic anionic groups. Hydroxyl groups on the other hand, which terminate alcohols, are much less effective at delocalizing charge compared to thei carboxylic counterparts.

(ii) How many H atoms, in addition to the one you see, are implied but are not shown? 11

OPTION 2: Glucose is also a key molecule in helping you work on this exam (key source of energy). Glucose can exist in several forms. In solution nearly all of glucose is in a ring form. The chair form is shown here.

(i) The four –OH groups attached to the ring are all shown as what? Axial or Equatorial? Equatorial
(ii) The two –OH groups shown on the left side of the molecule are situated as what? Cis or Trans Cis

(iii) Briefly explain why the arrangement you selected in part (A) allows the molecule to be in a lower energy form (more stable) than if the other form had been shown. (continued on next page……)

Axial groups require more energy to stay in that position, therefore equatorial -OH group
