Any recommendations for take out or to go options? Looking for something different for hanukkah.
Does anyone know where I can find this in Chicago? I'm guessing maybe somewhere in Pilsen or Humboldt Park, but does anyone know of a specific store? Thank you so much! I'm jonesing to make these.
I could in theory find them locally but they sell out the second they are put out for sale at all the shops around here. It's been years since I've managed to have some! I'd be willing to do a trade or some such for em!
Was going to wait til Christmas to open, but I've been at my grandmother's helping care for her, so figured i would do it while I'm here. I appreciate all of this cards this month!
u/pinkpolo - This card is so beautiful! I will hopefully also be getting into "biking" next year when I get a Peloton (I'm not very good at the real thing). Sorry about your dog!! I hope, like you said, when summer comes around, you are able to find a new family member to love :)
u/KK6321 - Thank you for the idea of pear butter! I usually make apple butter around this time, but with pears sounds great!
u/germymany - i love a classic mickey mouse card! so excited this is your first year for a real tree!! My family used to have a tradition of cutting down a tree together and getting apple cider and pit beef (the latter was definitely my favorite part!)
u/ljsweenes - very pretty card! I love the ribbon tree idea and peppermint bark recipe! I love crafts and making food so looking forward to doing both!
u/tigerlady3 - oooh a handmade card! i love it, thank you! and the little sticker is so cute as well!
u/orangewolpertinger - i LOVE the cat tape and stickers! and the bookmark! Thank you so much! The ornament tradition is wonderful too! Chili and corn chowder sound really good! Definitely love a good chili, and we have a crab and corn chowder down here, i think i had a clam chowder in New England that had corn in it.
u/TheEndofMySong - The cats playing poker sticker is too cute! Thank you for the postacrd, its very pretty and I will absolutely give my feline children your love :) Thank you!
u/jnlzwrg x3 - thank you for all of the postcards! I have two on me, but i believe i saw a third one thats at my house? The one from MD is actually a road i used to live off of so its cool to see what it used to look like! The Michigan card is very pretty, i may pass that on to a friend who lives near that area! Thank you so much!
u/ocean_bea - Nova Scotia is amazing and this was one of the best trips I've ever been on. I'm not a big souvenir person so never stopped anywhere, so I'm really grateful to have this postcard now! if you go, i highly recommend looking up Meat Cove, it's super cool and a nice little hike!
u/mypetitmal - this is such a cute postcard! i will also be looking up bunuelos (i don't know how to make the correct n), and natilla! I love learning about new foods, especially holiday traditional food!
[Hawaii] - your card is so great! I think I gave a bunch... keep reading on reddit ➡
As always, please let me know if anything is missing! I wanted to get this out early enough so everyone has time to plan!
Many years ago, in about 2011-2012 I worked at a pizza buffet/game arcade in Euless, TX. We had a Christmas party with a buffet/potluck where many different people brought homemade desserts. There was this one dessert I just couldn’t stop eating, it was amazing but I haven’t been able to figure out the name of this dessert since. I asked around my work and was told who brought it but I can’t remember anymore. I do remember being told it was a foreign dessert however (I worked with a lot of immigrants). Google searches have not been helpful for me, I’ve found a few things that are close but not exactly it.
Description of dessert- It was a round ball, decently big maybe the size of a fist. It seemed to be fried because there was an outer layer of crisper dough (Imagine like a cake donut or beignet) and the inside was a soft sweet bread. It almost tasted like a ball of sweet bread or cake fried, but it wasn’t as sweet as typical American desserts. It was 100% just a bread/pastry, there was no nuts, cheese, fruit or anything else inside the ball. I remember eating them by hand while bowling so there wasn’t sauce, syrup or powered sugar or anything like that on them either that made them messy. I can’t remember particular flavors, just that it was a very balanced sweetness and I couldn’t stop eating them. Pretty sure it was white inside and like a dark tan color for the crust.
If it helps, here’s some of the ethnicities I worked with and who commonly live in that area- Indians, middle eastern (not sure exactly where), Hispanics, Tongans, Africans (not sure where either). This is not a totally exhaustive list, there was a big mix of cultures there and a lot of employees so it could definitely be from a culture not on that list. I would love to eat this dessert again if I could figure out the name. I tried all the desserts I could find similar at restaurants around my old work to see if maybe it was catered but didn’t find it so I think it was homemade. Thanks in advance for the help!
Edit: at this point in time, I am pretty sure it’s either a Panikeke, African Drop donut, or a version of Bunuelo or malasada. I am not sure who to give the credit to because I can’t be 100% which one it is yet because the pictures look so similar. I am going to try all these options and see if one a a match.
Hello everybody. I am really excited that some friends and me will be visiting Valencia this week. Some of us will be running the marathon in Sunday. I am looking to make our trip as great as possible.
This is my plan:
Arrival at Saturday around lunch time. We will spend few hours in the Expo and will have Saturday afternoon free to explore parts of the city - any suggestions are great. I don't have any particular plans for this day.
Sunday - we will be running the Marathon, then we have half a day. I am thinking about visiting the Bioparc. Is half a day going to be enough ? If we have time we prefer to walk at least part of the way there, instead of taking public transport. Maybe walk a few miles of Jardi del Turia ? Note: some will not be running and will have ~ 3 free hours around the finish line (City of Arts and Sciences). Do you have any suggestions for them ? Some of them are foodies, some love architecture, arts, museums. So anything in that ballpark will be great.
Monday - whole day in City of Arts and Sciences and Oceanogràfic de Valencia, maybe visit the Hemisferic if we have the time
Tuesday morning - fly back home
I don't travel often, so I have some questions
Is this manageable ? We don't want to be rushing from one place to another, so if you guys think that this is too much we might drop something.
Also we want to try as much of the local food as possible. Paella and bunuelos are no brainer, what else should we try ? I love baked goods so something baked would be great.
Any other suggestions will be great.
Edit: You guys are great. Thanks for the fast response and suggestions. Two more questions.
Is the Central Market a good place to spend an hour and get some local goods ?
I am looking to buy cooking related gift. Something small (traveling with budged airline) and handmade. Some traditional cooking utensils maybe ? Do you have a suggestion where I can find something like that ?

I learned to make chocolate chip cookies a few years ago. I was making the pre-made stuff and it felt so greasy and weird. Everyone loves them. I hate them. One afternoon, with really nothing to do, I was looking up recipes from scratch and decided to try my hand. I still didn't like them. I'm not a fan of chocolate chip cookies. But everyone tells me they're the best they've had.
Since then, I've learned to make oatmeal cookies, buttermilk cookies, bunuelos, and pumpkin pie. I learned to cream butter and sugar, make butter from heavy cream, and am working on icing. I learned to fluff egg whites by hand last night. F**k fluffing egg whites by hand.
My plan was to learn to make a few cakes for the holiday or make my own cookie recipes, but was greatly discouraged, being told it was "too complicated." So I made a sponge cake. It wasn't that complicated. But again, f**k fluffing egg whites by hand.
