Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!

Welcome to Senฤtus Populusque Paradoxus, The Senate and People of Paradox. Here you will find trustworthy Senators to guide your growing empire in matters of conquest and state.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble Senators of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Biweekly Telephone Game v3 (284)

This is a game of borrowing and loaning words! To give our conlangs a more naturalistic flair, this game can help us get realistic loans into our language by giving us an artificial-ish "world" to pull words from!

The Telephone Game will be posted every Monday and Friday, hopefully.

Rules

  1. Post a word in your language, with IPA and a definition.

Note: try to show your word inflected, as it would appear in a typical sentence. This can be the source of many interesting borrowings in natlangs (like how so many Arabic words were borrowed with the definite article fossilized onto it! algebra, alcohol, etc.)

  1. Respond to a post by adapting the word to your language's phonology, and consider shifting the meaning of the word a bit!

  2. Sometimes, you may see an interesting phrase or construction in a language. Instead of adopting the word as a loan word, you are welcome to calque the phrase -- for example, taking skyscraper by using your language's native words for sky and scraper. If you do this, please label the post at the start as Calque so people don't get confused about your path of adopting/loaning.

Hi everyone!

It's time for our biweekly "What Are My Chances?" / School List Help Thread! Due to the high volume of comments on these threads, we will have two threads each week. This thread will be sticked until Sunday morning when a new thread will take over. All individual WAMC/School List posts will be removed.

Biweekly Career Thread for February 14, 2021

After many modmails, posts, and comments from users dissatisfied with the uptrend of threads regarding saturation, dropping out of the profession, changing jobs, and similar topics, we are trying out a new monthly Career Thread.

Examples include:

  • Is pharmacy saturation real? Is it still a viable career or should prospective students change direction?
  • Should I change from Job A to Job B?
  • Should I quit pharmacy?
  • Job offers and advertisements.

Please remember this is only a list of examples and not necessarily all inclusive. This will be a work in progress in order to help group the large amount of similar threads, so people will have access to more responses in one spot.

[r/IndiaSpeaks - Biweekly Geopolitics Thread] Tense phone call between Biden & Xi Jinping, massive protests in Myanmar, and the economic rise of Taiwan

Welcome to this week's edition of the Geopolitics Thread, the one place where we discuss all the latest events from around the world. Discussion does not have to be related to India. Please share and discuss stories, or ask any geopolitical questions that you have, in the comments. Here are a few stories to get the discussion started:

Top stories

  1. Biden dials Xi in tense call

After calling treaty allies in Europe and Asia as well as major non-treaty ally India, US President Joe Biden had a tense, 2 hour long call with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping. According to statements released from both sides, the two disagreed on all the major issues discussed, from a clampdown on democracy in Hong Kong to threats to invade Taiwan to the genocide underway in Xinjiang. They also exchanged views on the coronavirus pandemic and climate change. The Chinese statement, which was far less rosy, warned that bad relations between the two powers would be a "disaster" for both countries. Meanwhile, a team of WHO investigators largely ruled out the theory that the coronavirus emerged in a lab in Wuhan, although their "investigation" was tightly controlled by Communist authorities.

  1. UK hits COVID-19 vaccine target as Europe looks on

UK PM Boris Johnson announced that the country had hit a significant milestone by administering at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine to all 15 million people (22% of the population) the government identified as the most vulnerable, including healthcare workers and residents of old age homes (about a third of them also received the second dose). With this, the country is expected to announce easing of lockdown measures in the coming weeks even as vaccination will now extend to the general public except children. Results from the world's most successfully vaccinated country, Israel, showed that the vaccines worked to stem the pandemic. Meanwhile, the EU announced that it would start fast-tracking vaccine approvals with the goal of purchasing 700 million shots by September. The rollout in Europe has been fairly abysmal.

Transitioning from semi-monthly payroll to biweekly

My company is considering a swap from semi-monthly payroll to biweekly payroll. The consistency of biweekly is appealing, and seasonal employees appreciate the slightly more rapid pace of pay. We don't mind the slight administrative cost increase of adding pay periods. Recalculating comp/ben shouldn't be too tricky, though we expect some minor headaches at first. We're a small HR and Admin team in a relatively small organization (less than 100 employees).

Have you gone through a similar change, either to or from semi-monthly pay? What are the biggest challenges you foresee, and how would you mitigate the impact on the company and the employees? We believe in transparency and want to make this transition as easy as possible on everyone. Any advice or unforeseen pitfalls?

Edit to add location: Washington, DC area including MD and VA, USA.

LPT: to payoff loans faster, make biweekly payments

This is kinda convoluted but I promise it's true:

If you make biweekly payments, you're actually making an extra payment every year.

So there's 52 weeks in a year, right?

  • So 52 weeks รท 2 (biweekly) = 26 payments per year.

This is equivalent to 13 regular monthly payments. Meaning you made an extra payment every year.

This kind of thing is most particularly handy on a mortgage because of the timescale, but it works on anything!

[r/IndiaSpeaks - Biweekly Geopolitics Thread] EU fights poor vaccine rollout, abortion ban in Poland, and the maker of modern Singapore

Welcome to this week's edition of the Geopolitics Thread, the one place where we discuss all the latest events from around the world. Discussion does not have to be related to India. Please share and discuss stories, or ask any geopolitical questions that you have, in the comments. Here are a few stories to get the discussion started:

Breaking News

Military coup in Myanmar (again), Suu Kyi detained

Myanmar's military announced that it had dismissed the country's civilian government on charges of "election fraud," detaining several political figures including the country's de facto civilian leader and Nobel Laureate Aung Sun Suu Kyi. In elections last year, her NLD party won 83% of seats, a stunning rebuke of the military-backed party. The military has ruled the country for over 50 years out of about 70 years of independence from Britain. Australia condemned the coup, while the US is also signaling a condemnation within a few hours. ASEAN, China, and India have not made any statements yet.

Top stories

  1. EU in embarrassing stand-off with AstraZeneca

The EU finds itself in a difficult situation with AstraZeneca (AZ) for its COVID-19 vaccine, as the bloc has had a poor rollout of the vaccine amidst widespread protests against continued lockdowns. AZ informed the EU that further vaccine shipments would be delayed as the company was upgrading its plant in Belgium to increase capacity. In response, the EU raided the plant to 'verify' the claims, and then moved to ban exports of the vaccine to the UK and other countries. However, the ban ran counter to the Brexit agreement that ensured an open border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, and after strong protests from the UK and EU-member state Ireland, it was reversed. AZ has an independent production line in the UK, where the rollout has been smooth, and the ban would've only had a cosmetic effect.

  1. Widespread anti-Putin protests in Russia

Alexey Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin's most outspoken critic, set off a storm of protests across Russia after he was arrested upon his return from Germany, where he was recovering from an assassination attempt in Siber

Biweekly Telephone Game v3 (282)

Biweekly Telephone Game v3 (280)

This is a game of borrowing and loaning words! To give our conlangs a more naturalistic flair, this game can help us get realistic loans into our language by giving us an artificial-ish "world" to pull words from!

The Telephone Game will be posted every Monday and Friday, hopefully.

###Rules

Biweekly Career Thread for February 07, 2021

Biweekly WAMC / School Lists Thread - Week of February 21, 2021 (1st Edition)

Hi everyone!

It's time for our biweekly "What Are My Chances?" / School List Help Thread! Due to the high volume of comments on these threads, we will have two threads each week. This thread will be sticked until Wednesday morning when a new thread will take over. All individual WAMC/School List posts will be removed.

Hereโ€™s the deal โ€“ you post relevant information relating to your med school application as a top-level comment, and other users reply to your comment sharing their insight about your application's strengths and weaknesses, including comments on your school list.

Before you post, read through our Wiki and check the /r/premed sidebar for useful information and answers to frequently asked questions. There is an AMCAS/AACOMAS GPA calculator in our sidebar if you need help calculating your cGPA and sGPA. Keep in mind that it is extremely difficult to gauge an applicant's chances without an MCAT score or at least a full-length practice exam average score.

Please be polite and remember to follow all subreddit rules. In order for us to best help you, we need to get a good idea of where your application currently stands. In order to accomplish this, please use the following template:

  • State/Country of Residence:
  • Ties to other States/Regions:
  • URM? (Y/N):
  • Year in School:
  • Undergraduate Major(s)/Minor(s):
  • Graduate Degrees (if applicable):
  • Cumulative GPA:
  • Science GPA:
  • MCAT Score(s):
  • Research Experience:
  • Publications/Abstracts/Posters (include how you were credited e.g. first author, second author, etc.):
  • Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer):
  • Physician Shadowing:
  • Non-Clinical Volunteering:
  • Other Extracurricular Activities:
  • Other Employment History:
  • Immediate family members in medicine? (Y/N):
  • Specialty of Interest (if applicable):
