Bimonthly Pune Socials

What do you guys think of having bimonthly socials?

I remember seeing a lot of "need friends" sort of posts during and immediately after the lockdown. I'm hoping by having some sort of socials we can get people together regularly. For some it can be a way of relaxing away from home/office without having to spend a lot of money, for others maybe it can help expand their social circle and meet new friends.

I was thinking that we can organize a meetup every other week on Sunday evenings (I assume most people will be busy with their usual social circles on Saturdays), along the following lines:

  1. Group activities that require relaxed but active participation - like playing cards, playing board games, depending on the people maybe playing video games or LAN games. I'd like to avoid passive activities like watching movies together.

  2. Inclusive - everyone is welcome, no alcohol etc. till everyone is comfortable (depending on the people coming maybe we can start allowing BYOB after a few meetups)

  3. Regular - Happens regularly so that people don't go out of touch

  4. Inexpensive - Shouldn't need a lot of money to meet up and have a good time for a few hours.

What do you guys think? I'd be happy to host to get the ball rolling, after that maybe the regulars can start hosting in turn.

I can also get some board games to get us started. Once we have a decent numbers we can vote on what inclusive, inexpensive activity we want to do.

If enough people are interested I can start a Telegram group for us coordinate, and I'll post here every week to inform new people who might be interested.

Updates:

  1. I've sent out DMs to people with a link to the telegram group. Telegram is a pretty good messaging app. It allows you to keep your phone number hidden. Some people might be a bit uncomfortable sharing their phone number to begin with. We already have a lot of interested people. I want everyone to be able to participate, but I think its best if we start small. Feel free to DM me if you're interested. I don't want to post the group link publicly to prevent spammers or trolls from finding the group and being a nuisance.

  2. 2021-02-04 10:20AM - I've sent out another batch on invites. I've invited everyone who messaged me or posted here up until now. The group has grown quite a bit. I'm taking a break from inviting people to focus on organizing the meetups. Feel free to DM me and I will invite you in the next batch of invites.

  3. It was decided that first mee

i have social anxiety, so im gonna post my suggestion here since mel said we could :) Not sure what the official term is, but i know most servers have a feature where u can sort of "follow" the channel, and get the announcements in our own server. If we could do that for both announcement channels, as well as sale item, that would be fantastic :) again great job on the q and a not everyone is willing to interact with their community.

Bimonthly (weekly, annually, ect.) Is a confusing term and should have its definition changed

I hate the term bimonthly, and all other variations. They have two, basically opposite, definitions: twice monthly or every two months.

This means that whenever you use the term you need to specify which one you mean. it w I uld be much easier if the definition were specified to only include one variation.

I think using it to mean every other month (week, whatever) and just saying twice monthly would cut down on confusion.

What is your monthly (or bimonthly) energy usage? My LADWP bill seems high for a one bedroom.

My last LADWP bill was for 842 KWH for Aug+Sep. The one previous was for 742 KWH for June+July. Seems to consistently at or over 700. I live in a one bedroom, older building, poor insulation (probably not much inside the walls, older windows, gas oven, older refridgerator. For heating and cooling, we have a window A/C unit in the living room, portable A/C unit in the bedroom, and portable electric heaters during winter (we do not use the built-in wall heater which is electric).

421 kwh a month seems pretty high for such a small apartment.

Can anyone else comment on your energy usage, and size of your home? Just trying to gauge what's typical before I reach out to LADWP. I know energy usage varies, but I just want to gauge a rough number across different homes and people.

The next major problem after the whole Dimensional mess - BIMONTHLY ABYSSAL EXPEDITIONS?????

Patch 1.50 contained notes about the return of abyssal expedition. Abyssal expedition coming back next month is way too much. This suggests that Lilith may be taking on bimonthly abyssal expeditions rather than quarterly abyssal as it was previously. This is going to cause some major burnout in players. Before this, I was ok with abyssal being more intensive and more active because it brought a change of pace every once in a while but this change makes it so the change of pace applies to half of the playtime for the whole year. 6 abyssals per year is RIDICULOUS.

I propose we take up Arty's solution and message in-game support to try and curb this change. The following is a message you can copy-paste to in-game support for this purpose.

Hello. I'm writing to suggest that Lilith revert the timing of abyssal expedition. The introduction of bimonthly abyssal expedition is a poor feature and will be very taxing on the player base by detracting from the game's "AFK" nature. Abyssal expedition is a very active game mode that is ok periodically. However, making this event bimonthly makes it so half of all playtime is highly active. Going back to an abyssal expedition every 3 months will help considerably. I urge the developer team to consider changing the event cycle.

Would you guys be interested in a monthly/bimonthly video conference?

I just thought it would be nice to have an interactive session with the /r/pl community. I intend that we'd post an agenda a few days in advance and try to have it in a centralish time zone (GMT is fine for me for my timezone and I think it would work for the US folks as well).

We'll have to figure out technical stuff like mode of video stream (google hangouts maybe?)

I'll be happy to curate an agenda based on suggestions in a thread posted a week in advance.

If someone wants to showcase a part of their compiler, that would be amazing. I can take the lead for presenting for the first iteration but I really want this to be about learning from other people's work and have a chat about compilers/type systems, etc.

Edit:

Looks like there's some interest here. I'll try to work out the details and try to get in touch with some people to invite them to speak. Watch this space for the next few days for more details.

Edit 2: I've created a poll to gather some opinions on some details. https://forms.gle/GMS9FojchTzBvLfD8

I'll take poll submissions as a sort of RSVP so that we can wait for a certain number of people to join before starting.

I'm new to this so feel free to suggest improvements to the process yeah?

Edit 3:

If anyone wants to present something for our inaugural meet up, PM me. I'll personally reach out to some of you too to see if anyone is interested.

Right now I'm thinking to hold it next Sunday (1st November because the poll is leaning marginally towards the weekend). Or perhaps the Sunday after that. We'll work around availability of presenters of course.

Also PM me questions/suggestions about the type of content you'd want to see/discuss.

Edit 4:

I reached out to a few people and already got a positive response from a few who are willing to present.

This is really happening and I'm incredibly excited for this event.

If someone wants to volunteer as a chat moderator, reach out. I want to include as many people as possible. This would be an easy way for people who are not super experienced to get involved

Stay tuned for more.

Edit: We've set up a discord server for planning this out https://discord.gg/XyaY2ce

[BiMonthly Discussion] The problems with the Congress

Starting today, we're going to be having Discussion posts every two months in an effort to have more quantitative debate and hopefully lessen the shitposting. These posts will go up every two months and previous topics can be found in this Collection (or by filtering by flair, whatever floats your boat). Any opinion on the topic can be given, no matter how controversial (as long as you maintain sub rules, please) and we encourage debate and lively discussion.

The topic for these two months is the Indian National Congress, so feel free to talk about anything relating to why the Congress is in the pathetic position it is today. From being the forefront Political party to basically irrelevant in a lot of states, the Congress has had a tremendous fall from grace. Some people blame this on the Nehru-Gandhi family, while others blame it on the spectacular rise of the BJP and the growing disconnect of the Congress with the Average Indian. No matter where you lie on the spectrum, you probably have an opinion on the INC. Let us know what it is!

Bimonthly Genning Megathread (January, February)

Welcome to /r/PokeMoonSun's genning megathread, where you can request a Pokemon for someone to generate it for you.

Note that you are far from guaranteed to receive help! The genners visiting this thread are only human! Not being able to keep up with the requests or not feeling like helping out is only natural!

In fact, unless you're in desperate need of a Pokemon and you can't give anything in return, please refrain from posting on this megathread, so that genners won't be overwhelmed with a huge amount of requests!

#####A Few Notes To Any Genners

If you're capable of generating Pokemon, you're free to drop by this thread and fulfill requests, whenever you feel like it.

In case you didn't know, you can collapse comments and comment chains using the [–] on their top-left corner. It ought to make looking for active requests easier.

Please report any fulfilled requests so that they're removed (or advise the requester to delete their original comment).

If you're volunteering, you've got everyone's gratitude!! :)

##RULES

  1. In order to post another request, 24 hours need to have passed since your previous request was fulfilled.

  2. Accounts less than 2 weeks old aren't allowed to request.

  3. Please be as specific as possible. Describe all of the Pokemon's characteristics you care about, so as not to leave anything you don't want to up to the genners.

  4. The GTS is much faster than Link Trades; it's what should be used to trade. Deposit an uncommon Pokemon and state its species, gender and level, as well as your trainer name and trade message. Level locking to 91 - 100 will make sniping less likely.

  5. Here's a very useful template from /r/PokemonCreate where you can fill inthe info mentioned above.

  6. Providing a .pk7 file or – even better – a QR code for the Pokemon you want will accelerate the process for PKHeX users, and it will ensure you get the exact Pokemon you desire.

  7. After getting the Pokemon you desire, please delete your original comment so that it's easier for people to find active requests!

If you feel that something about these rules is flawed, please let me know by messaging me!

Going from biweekly to bimonthly paychecks

This is half venting, half asking for thoughts/opinions!

My company is about to transition from biweekly to bimonthly paychecks. Our last biweekly paycheck will cover the 2 weeks from 12/12-12/25 and gets paid out the following week (the week of 12/30). Due to the logistics involved in switching over, our first paycheck of 2021 will be on 1/15 and cover only 12/26-12/31. The following paycheck will be paid out on the last day of January for 1/1-1/15, and so on with that schedule. We are going from getting paid on a delay of a few days to getting paid on a delay of 15-16 days.

The decision is made, and last week they gathered managers to get a temperature check. I understand that the decision is above my pay grade and that it benefits the business, and I have no objection to the principle of getting paid bimonthly. My concerns (and those of my peers) are all to do with the logistics involved in the transition.

VENTING: I can see that they really are trying to make this as painless as possible, and it sounds like they've already come up with options to help any employees who might suffer financial hardship during the transition. However, some of the messaging really rubbed me the wrong way:

  • Some people are acting like just because we have an extra paycheck in December, that should be enough to tide people over. One of my peers brought up the fact that right after the holidays are often a financially lean time for people, and it was barely acknowledged.
  • There also seems to be a widespread assumption (all by older people who probably make the most and are the most financially stable, but maybe that's just a coincidence, idk) that this will impact very few people - basically, that anyone who works at our company probably gets paid enough that they have a financial cushion of half a paycheck or more. They said more than once that they were planning to offer assistance to those who need it but they only expect a couple people to use it. I think this is extraordinarily optimistic.
  • They keep saying that we'll get "paid more" this way, which is overly simplistic at best and misleading at worst.

One of the ways they plan to offer assistance is to provide the information required for people to make a short term change to their 401k contributions in order to increase their take-home. This was followed immediately by one of our execs talking about how important it is to save for retirement and how we may not be able to count on social security. I was hone
